Get Ready, Get Set, But Don’t Plant – Yet B
By Ronald Scaglia ecause of the mild winter that Long Island experienced this year, and temperatures that climbed into the 70s during the middle of the March, many gardeners are likely chomping at the bit to go out into their backyards and gardens and start planting. Even the plants seem ready to go, as many bulbs are swelling and opening, weeks before expected. However, before you grab your watering can, work gloves and a package of seeds, Michael Veracka, chairperson of the Department of Ornamental Horticulture at Farmingdale State College has a word of advice – patience. “It’s too cold still to plant,” Veracka advises Long Island gardeners. “One should not be fooled by warm winter and early spring. Exhibit some patience.” Veracka compared our region’s recent climate to that of North Carolina or Virginia, where milder winters lead to earlier springs and plants blossoming sooner than is typical here on Long Island. However, he is quick to caution that although the weather may make it seem as if we are living in Raleigh, we are still in the northeast and cold temperatures, and yes, even snow is still possible. Furthermore, he

also advises coastal area residents, especially those on the North Shore, that these areas warm up more slowly than inland areas. “The first thing to recognize, although it’s technically spring now, both soil and air temperatures are still cooler than ideal for most plants,” Veracka advises. However, those who can’t wait to begin the growing season should take heart. Just because he believes it’s still a bit too early to be planting, it doesn’t mean it’s too early to plan a beautiful garden or yard and take steps toward it becoming a reality. In fact, he advises that now is the time to take the first step toward a beautiful garden by inspecting it and determining the health of the horticulture that is already there. He suggests gardeners examine
their plants to determine if they are alive and healthy. “Keep in mind that in the past year we’ve had some pretty crazy weather,” says Veracka. “We had a hurricane. We had a very wet late summer into the fall. We’ve had quite a few wind events and before that we had a very dry part of 2011.” Because of the unusual conditions, it is possible that some plants may not have survived the winter or may not be healthy. According to Veracka, those who want their garden to look its best come summer should begin making plans about what might replace anything that will be removed or any new plant, shrub or vegetable additions that they hope to make. In addition to inspecting the health of
the horticulture, Veracka also advises cleaning up yards, flower beds and gardens and removing any debris. He says there might be fallen branches, leaves, or other debris that needs to be removed, especially if a clean up was not performed last autumn. Additionally, by raking up leaves and other debris, gardeners are giving their lawns the added benefit of aerating the soil, which he says is very beneficial. “It introduces more oxygen into the soil,” explains Veracka. “The biggest thing that can happen with lawns is they get very compacted from machinery, from people playing sports or just walking on it.” He also said that those preparing areas for flowerbeds should turn the soil in these areas over. Ideally he suggests digging to the depth of at least a spade, which is 8 inches. Something else that Veracka strongly advises is a soil test. He recommends that green thumbs collect a sample of soil and send it to a lab to determine both the pH level of the soil as well as the nutrient content and the level of organic matter. “Doing a soil test is a lot like going to a doctor and getting bloodwork done,” explains Veracka. “What you get is a lot of good information about the overall health of your soil and you get a better understanding of the ingredients that are in there. Then you can make adjustments. If you don’t do that then you’re strictly guessing.” A scale of zero through 14 is used for pH levels with seven being neutral. Levels below seven indicate that the soil is acidic and could need some limestone. Levels above seven, which are uncommon on Long Island, indicate that the soil is alkaline and might need to have sulfur added. continued on page 18

Are Your Trees Adding Value or Are They a Liability? pring is the right time for homeowners on Long Island to look at the outside of their homes and evaluate what, if anything, needs to be done. When it comes to trees, it is the time to determine if certain aspects are adding value or unnecessary risks. A well-manicured yard with curb appeal can increase a home’s market value. Conversely, a sick or dead tree or an unkempt landscape can reduce the value of your single largest asset and pose a danger. “Trees provide significant value to homeowners, communities, the environment and landscapes,” commented Paul Grilli, president of Walsh Brothers Tree Service in Westbury. “However, we have seen that they can be extreme liabilities when they become weak or diseased. Proper care to trees is essential and should be viewed like any other necessary home improvement to maintain and increase your property value. Clearly, proper care is essential to prolong a tree’s life and in turn increase the benefits it provides.” As seen in recent storms that have passed through Long Island, unhealthy trees blew over in large numbers, causing substantial property damage, injuries, power outages and costly repairs. Homeowners should be on the look out for signs that trees could be at risk. Walsh Brothers Tree Service trained arborists suggest homeowners should lookout for the following: • Large dead branches in the tree or branches that have recently fallen • Detached branches hanging in the trees • Cavities or rotten wood along the trunk or major branches • Cracks or splits in the trunk • Mushrooms present at the base of the tree • Adjacent trees that have fallen over
S
While healthy trees can add appeal to a home, unhealthy trees can be a danger.
and died • A strong lean in the trunk • Roots that have been broken or damaged by installing pavement, lowering the soil level or digging trenches “It’s important for homeowners to recognize that pruning is extremely important to a tree’s health and their function in your landscape,” continued Grilli. “Each cut into a tree can change the growth of the tree and shorten its life.” Spring presents the best time for pruning as experts may easily spot diseased areas. When pruning for structure, young trees can be aided in developing a strong structure and desirable form. Pruning for aesthetics can increase the form and beauty of the tree while enhancing the structure of
limbs and canopy. Finally, pruning for safety removes the chances of falling limbs and costly property damage and injury. Walsh Brothers Tree Service and Contracting has been an established business with more than 25 years experience with a reputation for service, reliability and low cost. Their certified arborists, highly trained workers, and state-of-the-art equipment continue to deliver the high quality service that clients have come to appreciate and expect. Walsh Brothers specializes in tree removal, pruning, land clearing and much more. Homeowners are encouraged to contact Walsh Brothers for a free assessment to see if pruning is necessary. Buzz Off: Keeping Your Property Mosquito Free A By Ronald Scaglia s Nassau County residents begin to decorate their backyards and gardens in preparation for the spring and summer season, they are advised to keep in mind the pesky unwanted warm weather visitors that can make them sick – and that doesn’t mean snowbirds from Florida. Nassau County residents are being urged to take precautions to reduce the mosquito population and help prevent the spread of the West Nile Virus. “Last year, we had a lot of mosquitoes and the population was really high, especially the ones that we call the house mosquito,” says Mary Ellen Laurain, spokeswoman for the Nassau County Department of Health. According to figures from the Nassau County Department of Health, 16 Nassau residents contracted West Nile Virus in 2011 including one fatality while 29 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus, which first appeared in our area in 1999. The previous year, there were 57 human cases including three fatalities and 145 mosquito pools that tested positive. The numbers for both years are significantly higher than 2009 when there were no human cases reported and only 18 mosquito pools that tested positive. “It’s relatively new for a disease,” explains Laurain about West Nile Virus and scientists search for a cause as to what makes the virus more prevalent
By removing standing water from their properties, homeowners can help protect themselves from mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus.
during certain years. “They’re really exploring weather patterns and what’s going on in the environment and how that plays out. They still are exploring them. They really don’t know yet.” Laurain says that just because the mosquito population will be high, it doesn’t necessarily translate into an increase in West Nile cases. However, because of the mild winter, it’s likely that the mosquito population will indeed be greater and residents should takes measures to control it. According to Laurain, the most important thing that homeowners can do is to remove standing water from their property. She says that it doesn’t take a lot of water
to become a mosquito breeding ground. In fact, the water that collects in the lip of a flowerpot is sufficient. Furthermore, it only takes about three or four days for a mosquito to develop in standing water. Therefore, homeowners should take this into consideration when doing their outdoor decorating and should either consider not using flowerpots that can collect water or be sure to clear the water regularly. “It’s fine to do so,” says Laurain of decorating with flowerpots. “As long as after rain they just dump the water. Some of them have that little lip on them and it collects water and it’s a perfect breeding ground.”
Laurain also reminds homeowners to remove the excess water after watering those plants and to be dilligent about removing water when the plants are indirectly watered, such as when a sprinkler system is used to water a lawn. Gutters are another area that collect water and can become a mosquito breeding ground. After the winter, it is quite possible that leaves have collected in gutters and will clog them up, thus becoming an area for water to collect. Laurain recommends that homeowners make the gutters a part of their spring-cleaning efforts. Decorative ponds, which are becoming popular in Nassau County, are another area where mosquitoes may potentially breed. Laurain says that those who have these ponds or those who are considering installing one should take this into consideration. “If they don’t have the water moving or they don’t treat it, it can become a breeding ground,” advises Laurain about the ponds. Birdbaths can be a nice aesthetic addition to any property and can attract feathered friends for those who enjoy bird-watching. However, these can also attract mosquitoes for breeding, so Laurain says that birdbaths should have the water changed four times per week. Children’s toys are yet another potential area for collecting water. Parents should be mindful of this when preparing an outside play area. Toys such as pails or any items that have a lip should be
monitored for the collection of water and have any water removed regularly or perhaps should be kept covered up or inside. Of course, pools are a huge source of standing water. Laurain recommends that pools be kept covered if not being used. Pool covers also collect water, so this should be monitored. In addition, abandoned pools can also be a huge area for water to collect, so homeowners should be attentive to removing any standing water that may collect there. Keeping a property wellgroomed can also prohibit water from collecting so homeowners are advised to properly landscape their property. “If they’re in their backyard and they’re being bitten by mosquitoes, it’s most likely coming from their own environment,” emphasizes Laurain about the need for residents to remove standing water. She further elaborated that house mosquitoes, which are most often implicated in the spread of the West Nile Virus, travel only 200 to 250 feet from their breeding ground. So, any mosquitoes preying in backyards likely originated there. In addition to maintaining their own properties, Laurain also says that residents may report their neighbors who fail to do so. Those who have issues with their neighbors regarding standing water and the risk of mosquitoes may call the Nassau County Department of Public Works at (516) 571-6900.

says that changing up the knobs can invigorate the look of a kitchen, and do so in an economical way. Later on, a more intense renovation can be done when the homeowner has a larger budget to work with. As with baths, she finds that traditional styles are the most popular. “A small change can make a big difference,” she says. Landy also recommends matching the design of the bathroom with that of the kitchen. By keeping the styles and finishes consistent, it gives the home a more appealing look, according to Landy. “Shapes and styles that would match the plumbing and the faucet carry through to the kitchen cabinets,” advises Landy. “Not only in style but in finish. You want it all to match so it’s nice.” For those who are seeking to change the look of their entire home without completely renovating the house, Landy suggests changing the doorknobs. She says that although this can be a little more costly, it is still more costeffective than a full renovation. “It can also change the whole look when you change the doorknobs,” recommends Landy. As with kitchens and baths, Landy finds that more traditional styles are the most popular. She finds that levers, egg-shaped knobs, traditional round knobs, and what she describes as “simple classic designs” are popular choices among her customers. And, as with kitchens and baths, she finds that polished chrome is the most popular finish, followed by satin nickel and polished nickel. Of course, homeowners may not choose to select what is popular and may instead opt for a contemporary design and finish. Landy stresses that whatever look homeowners desire, it can be achieved, and the simple act of changing knobs and faucets can do so in a cost-effective manner. She adds that design and budget are of the utmost priority when she recommends style changes to homes. “We always find something to accommodate someone’s taste and style,” says Landy.

hase Peres of Sayville was named president of Unified Window Systems Inc. as of January 1, 2012. Former president and chief executive officer Steven DiMare stepped aside as president but retained the title of CEO. “As an owner of the company, we needed Chase to move up to this important position as the company continues to grow,” said DiMare. Peres most recently served as vice president of sales and senior vice president of Unified. He started with the company 20 years ago as an installer and has moved through the entire company as it has grown. Unified Windows, Doors, Siding and Roofing has increased its product line into attic insulation and pavers and stone work, and is expanding its area to cover the entire tri-state region. “It’s a challenge to grow as much as we have without increasing our responsibilities,” said Peres. “The new position is quite challenging but also very exciting as we grow our business.” Unified has branched out most recently by having added showrooms throughout the region. It recently took over the factory location of U.S. Window Factory in Richmond Hill. For the past 25 years US Window Fac-

Pansies: A Plant for Cooler Weather By Ronald Scaglia ost experts agree that it is too early in the year to plant the annuals that will last through the summertime. Even with our region experiencing a mild winter and a very mild beginning to spring, the possibility of cold weather still exists and just one day of a strong cold front can wreak havoc on fragile plants. In fact, Cornell University’s Cooperative Extension projects April 20 as the day of the last frost in Nassau County, so it is advised to wait until at least that date before beginning to plant a garden. However, what’s a springtime without brightly colored flowers? And some of us probably are not patient enough to wait until Mother’s Day, or sometime around then to enjoy some nice color in our yards. For those who want to plant something now, pansies may be the answer. “They’re the first flower of spring,” says Fred Falconer, owner of Falconer Florists in Port Washington. “They really usher in spring.” Falconer explains that pansies do best in cooler weather. That is why these flowers are so popular in both the spring and the fall. They thrive in moderate to cool temperatures, but cannot handle the high heat of summer which explains why pansies will be seen mostly during the two moderate seasons of fall and spring and not as much during the summer. “Pansies can be planted now,” concurs Case Joosse, grounds manager of LIU-Post. “They’re a cold weather annual. We actually planted them a couple of weeks ago because of the warmer temperatures that we had. Pansies provide color before the early buds come up. After May, you can start putting out your summer annuals.” Falconer emphasizes that pansies come in every color of the rainbow including red, white, pink, yellow and other vibrant colors and that they have a very pleasant scent. He comments that pansies will last until warmer weather

takes hold of our region. However, even though they are cooler weather flowers, he says that under the right conditions, it possible for pansies to last longer than that. “If they’re in a shaded location, they might last all summer,” says Falconer, although he reiterates that they are a cooler temperature plant and it’s best to plant them in spring and then replant pansies in the fall. Michael Veracka, chairperson of the Department of Ornamental Horticulture at Farmingdale State College says that he feels it is still too early to be planting. He advises waiting until the weather is warmer and the threat of frost, wet conditions and even a late season snow is gone. However for those who wish to do so, he also advises cold tolerant plants from the viola family such as pansies and johnny jump ups. “Personally, I think it’s too early to be planting any of those but you could begin to do that,” says Veracka of
plants from the viola family. Falconer also suggests other cold tolerant plants. One recommendation he has for cooler temperatures is planting primroses. He says that primroses come in assorted colors such as blue, yellow, white, pink and red and are popular in the early spring. Perhaps no flowers are more synonymous with spring than tulips and daffodils. However, bulbs for these are planted in the autumn. Those hoping to grow their own daffodils and tulips will have to wait until the fall to plant the bulbs and then for next spring to enjoy their beauty. For those who absolutely have to enjoy tulips and daffodils now, those that were planted in the fall and are now sprouting may be purchased and planted. However, Falconer points out, that is not as cost effective as buying the bulbs in the fall and having them grow during the winter.
