Create a Relaxing Outdoor Living Space

ool drinks. Barbecues. Relaxing. They’re all the makings of the perfect summer evening when enjoying time with family and friends. It’s the season when everyone is looking for ways to spend time outside and the backyard can easily become an outdoor oasis. When deciding on what you can do to improve your home for summer, think of your outdoor area as an extension of your indoor living space. Replacing the siding on your home or adding a beautiful outdoor fireplace are just a couple examples of projects that can give your outdoor living space the upgrade it needs to make your backyard or patio more desirable. “Homeowners are truly starting to view their backyards or patios as an extension of their indoor living area by creating an ‘interior look’ outside,” says Kit Selzer, senior remodeling and projects editor for Better Homes and Gardens. “This means bringing your interior palette outside by choosing decor that complements your indoor look. This can be reflected in the type of flowers planted, surface material chosen, appliance finishes, Homeowners are starting to view their outdoor living space as an extension of their indoor living area. etc. You can start out simple by adding a nice grill or a rolling drink cart - both are great for entertaining.” Cooking with outdoor grills can help keep the heat out of the kitchen. Also, an outdoor fire pit serves as an inviting centerpiece to the area, allowing everyone to enjoy cooler summer evenings. Create seating areas where family and friends can relax. The classic Adirondack chair is the perfect option for additional seating. If garden beds are looking a little sparse, consider enhancing the area with low-maintenance perennials. Add pops of color with annual flowers such as impatiens, geraniums and marigolds. For additional adornments, plant annual flowers in pots of different shapes and sizes that can be clustered on the corner of the patio or deck. If you enjoy climbing flowers like clematis or climbing snapdragons, consider adding a free standing garden trellis. Finish the garden with fresh mulch to help control weeds and keep the ground moist. With a little work around the backyard, you’ll have a comfortable and cozy living space that can be used during warm summer months. (ARA)

C

Time to Fire Up That Grill

Put a lid on it: Traditional grilling foods - small steaks, burgers, chicken, fish - do best over direct heat (fire directly under the food), while thicker meats like roasts, brisket or pork shoulder benefit most from indirect heat (fire off to the side). No matter which way you’re cooking, it’s always best to keep the grill lid down - and don’t peek too much! Heat escapes every time you open the lid.

The backyard can easily become an outdoor oasis.

Swimmers should educate themselves about rip currents. These currents, also known as “rip tides,” are the leading surf hazard to beachgoers.

Look Out for Ocean Rip Currents

ip currents are the cause of more than 100 drownings a year and more than 80 percent of surf water beach rescues. Rip currents form when waves move from deep to shallow water and break in varying strengths in some areas. The first step to avoiding rip currents is to identify them, and they can appear either as a channel of churning, choppy water, an area having a notable difference in water color, a line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward or a break in the incoming wave pattern. Rip currents do not pull people under water like many people think, but away from shore, and tragedy can occur from panic, exhaustion or poor swimming. These currents usually move about one to two feet per second but can sometimes be faster than an Olympic swimmer

at more than eight feet per second. To survive a rip current: -Never swim alone and always swim at a lifeguard protected beach. -If caught in a rip current, remain calm to conserve energy; don’t fight the current. Swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim towards shore. -If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water. When out of the current, swim towards shore. -If you are still unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself: face the shore, wave your arms and yell for help. -If you see someone in trouble, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 911. Throw the rip current victim something that floats and yell instructions on how to escape.

All Showrooms open 7 days or call (888)631-2131 for a Free in Home Estimate in the Tri-state area

Shopping For a Contractor Once you make a decision to do some work on your home, the next step is to call in some contractors for estimates and ideas. Most homeowners don’t think they need to have their wits about them until the salesperson is sitting in front of them. That’s a big mistake. So what is the right way to go about this often overwhelming process? How do you know if you’ve let the right contractor into your home? Here are a few tips to help make your home improvement projects as successful and worthwhile as possible. Before you call anyone in for an estimate, there are some very important decisions to make. Are you the type of person who wants to deal with an established reputable company with a place of business (which will cost a little bit more money), or are you the type of person who wants to be your own general contractor and hire someone that works out of his truck or home (which should be less expensive)? There are numerous different types of contractors out there, but only one is right for you. The truth is, you should only be comparing apples with apples. If you call in the largest construction company you can think of, a mid-sized local establishment, and your cousin’s friend Johnny, you haven’t accomplished anything. You’re pricing three different quality products and three different levels of service. Remember, a guarantee is only as good as the company that issues it. Just because something is cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better deal. If you know your cousin’s friend is not what you want because you don’t want to deal with a pickup truck contractor, and the high prices of the national chains leave you questioning if the product is really worth the price, you should be calling in three local, established companies. Not only do you get an accredited company you can trust, but their prices will be much more reasonable. You can really compare prices and products on a level playing field. These midsized companies can be found in local papers, local television commercials, radio station ads, or by word of mouth. Just be sure to visit the company’s showrooms. With a little bit of deception, many pickup truck contractors can seem like a midsized company. Once you’ve found your local companies, make sure you get all the quotes in writing so that you can refer back to the estimate if you have any disagreements when the work is being done. It is also a good idea to check with your local Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs. They will not only tell you if the contractor has a lot of complaints, but will tell you how long they have been in business under that company name. Lastly, when dealing with salespeople, the best piece of advice is always “trust your instincts.”

‘Why Go to the Hamptons?’

The Country Club As a Destination

By Matthew A. Piacentini he golf course at North Shore Country Club has a 19th hole. Indeed, it’s the unique elements and those extra features, added by new owner Donald Zucker, that make the Glen Head club both a satisfying place to golf and a real getaway destination for the entire family. Benoit Ghesquiere-Dierickx, general manager of the club, shares his slogan: “Why go to the Hamptons?” He says the vision at North Shore is the local country club as a destination – sporting a health club, a pool overlooking Hempstead Harbor, a tennis center, charming guest cottages, and a playground and camp for the kids. “We think of ourselves as a resort,” he said. “We want to provide something for every member of the family.” For the golfers themselves, while the family is entertained with camp activities, or swimming, spinning, yoga, or other pastimes, there are: practice facilities; an indoor, year-round training room, where the pro works on your stroke using cameras and a flat screen TV; driving ranges and a putting course;

T

and, most importantly, a 6,543 yard, par-71 course renovated by celebrated architect Tom Doak. Doak said there were definitely some features to preserve on the course. He aimed to keep the original style, designing improvements so that people would not necessarily think there was a complete renovation. He kept some holes and created some new ones, while installing all new turf, seven new greens, and completely rebuilt bunkers. “I couldn’t think of anyone besides Tom,” Zucker said, explaining that they wanted to create a golf experience that was challenging but enjoyable. “If you go home and think ‘Boy, I got beat up today,’ that’s not what it’s all about. We wanted people to be able to have a good time.” Zucker saved the club, which had gone into financial distress and was destined, he said, to become a site for real estate developers. “It was a dream that the economy made possible. Where else can you find a 158 acres in Nassau to build a golf course?” he said. His dream and his vision have resulted in a beautiful place to golf and a wonderful, convenient local vacation spot for the whole family.

North Shore Country Club has been turned into a vacation getaway, with something for every member of the family – camp, babysitting, fitness, swimming, tennis, and of course… the golf.

Renowned architect Tom Doak preserved some features while creating a unique, enjoyable new golf experience, with all new turf, seven new greens, rerouted holes and completely rebuilt bunkers.

The Massapequa Preserve boasts the longest hiking trail in Nassau County.

Stroll the Preserves This Summer Massapequa Preserve North Massapequa With the longest hiking trail in Nassau County, Massapequa Preserve allows visitors to take a scenic walk from Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue to Cold Spring Harbor. The 423-acre preserve has freshwater swamps, marsh, stream, lake and sandy-bog areas that are home to rare and endangered Long Island plants, such as orchids, carnivorous sundews and bladderworts. Fishing is available in the lakes and streams for those with the required license.

Bailey Arboretum Lattington, Bayville Road and Feeks Lane Open: Tuesday - Sunday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. This 42-acre former estate of the Bailey family houses greenery native to other parts of the United States and to other countries. Designed with the intention of creating a “living, growing museum,” the arboretum is lined with exotic trees, rare shrubs and colorful flower beds.

Muttontown Preserve East Norwich, 25A west of Jericho Oyster Bay Road, on Muttontown Lane (south side of 25A) Nassau County’s largest nature preserve, Muttontown Preserve is 550 acres of fields, woodlands, ponds and nature trails. The preserve serves as a home for various kinds of animals and plants, including reptiles, mammals, birds and flowers. Nassau Hall, the ruins of the mansion once owned by King Zog of Albania and Chelsea Estate, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, are preserve attractions. Chelsea Estate was built by Benjamin Moore in 1924 and has a moat, bridges and a courtyard.

Welwyn Preserve Glen Cove, Crescent Beach and New Woods Roads This densely wooded 204-acre preserve allows visitors to view fresh water ponds and swamps, a coastal salt marsh and the Long Island Sound shoreline from its four nature trails. The Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center is located on the grounds.

Let It Shine! ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed’ At All Auto Wash Locations

f you’re wondering about the recipe to success, look no further than the Auto Wash family of Long Island. According to this company, it all boils down to three main ingredients: Experience: The chain of washes, which has included 22 New York locations over the years, from Hampton Bays to Staten Island. Al Carrabis, grandson of the founder, took over the family business. Carrabis remains Senior Partner and now shares his role with newest partners, Mike Canino, Tony Pasarelli, and Scott Popofsky. Today the chain is comprised of three locations, with the newest in Manhasset on East Shore Road, formerly East Shore Hand Car Wash. But the experience in the myriad washes the group has owned and operated over the years gives them a competitive advantage that can’t be matched. Make it a family affair: The Auto Wash chain started as collaboration between two families, and today employees of the chain are treated just as if they were also members of the family. The Auto Wash Group continues to promote an atmosphere of family by placing an emphasis on children at all of the locations. Every child that comes through an Auto Wash location is given a compli-

I

mentary balloon with the car wash logo on it. Regular customers at any Auto Wash location get to know the partners by name, and become part of the family as well. Satisfaction Guaranteed: Auto Wash locations pride themselves on offering consistent service no matter what location you are bringing your vehicle to or what wash package you might be getting that day. The motto of the company since 1962 has been “Satisfaction Guaranteed or Your Dirt Back!” The newest location, coming soon at 201 East Shore Road in Manhasset right on the Great Neck border, will be the first Auto Wash location on the “Gold Coast” of Long Island. The location was formerly East Shore Hand Car Wash. Carrabis, Canino, Pasarelli, and Popofsky have some very special plans for what will be according to Carrabis, “the crowned jewel in the Auto Wash crown”. Manhasset Hand Wash will be the only hand car wash in the area. Every aspect of the building and the car wash tunnel is going to undergo a facelift. The renovations are currently under way, and the community is excited already to see what the Auto Wash boys have in store for this very special location.
