A RARE .577 CAPPING BREECHLOADING CAVALRY SERVICE CARBINE, 21inch sighted five groove rifled barrel fitted with rear leaf sights, the lock stamped F T BAKER 88 FLEET STREET LONDON, the top of the receiver faintly engraved GREEN PATENT 1861, full stocked with regulation brass mounts, swivel cleaning rod. Half a dozen examples of the rare trials rifle are believed to exist but this is the only carbine sized one that I have seen. This carbine is basically a Pattern 1858 percussion cavalry carbine with the addition of the patented breech loading system submitted and accepted for trials in August 1864. The profile of the nobleman is probably that of Philip II of Spain, 96

The blade and decoration appear to be entirely contemporary to the period suggested but unusually one or two panels have been left blank or unfinished. Augier and presentation inscription From the Non-Commissioned Officer’s and Matrosses of Captain M H Court’s Company of Madras Artillery employed at the capture of Amboyna & its

dependencies in the year 1810 to Captain Court as a small testimony of the respect & admiration they have for him. In February 1810 a force of three ships carrying detachments of the Madras Artillery and the Madras European Regiment attacked the Dutch Spice Island of Amboyna. Captain Major Court commanded the shore party which also included Marines and some Seamen totalling 401 men in all. After the successful capture of Amboyna the remaining major Spice Islands surrendered without bloodshed or resistance. £5000-7000

in its openwork steel scabbard, the three open panels trimmed in fishskin, some losses. It is suggested, given the fine quality and obvious stature of the hilt, that it was made for the commanding officer of the Regiment who at that time was in fact George, Prince of Wales. £5000-7000

one chipped, contained in its plated steel scabbard, some lifting, complete with knot, together with his 1897 Pattern Royal Engineers Officer’s sword by ROBERT MOLE, contained in its field service scabbard, a framed and glazed pencil portrait of Harper in service dress titled “France 1916” and signed Leonard Smith, a boxed pair of General Officer’s cufflinks and one shoulder insignia, a 9ct gold First War tank tie pin, a 1913 dated half crown engraved with a tank and a bi-plane and 1918, a later? Highland Division sleeve patch and a copy of The History of the Fifty First Division 1914-1918 by Brewsher. (Group) Lieutenant General Sir George Montague Harper (18651922) was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in 1884, serving at the School of Engineering and promoted Captain while serving in India in 1892. Twice mentioned in Despatches during the Boer War he saw extensive service and rounded the campaign off with the receipt of the Distinguished Service Order. There then followed a number of staff appointments during the inter-war period, before going on to half-pay in 1911. The onset of the First World War saw Harper’s appointment to the headquarters of the BEF. Principally his service during the First War was known for his command of the 51st (Highland) Division in France, serving at the Somme, Ancre, Arras, Menin Road and the Tank campaign at Cambrai. Leonard J. Smith (1892-?) was an artist, infantryman, sniper and camouflage designer who also made daring trips in to No Man’s Land to map and sketch the German positions. £2500-3000

The sword of Nicholas Lechmere who joined the Scots Guards in May 1901 and left in 1907. Lechmere rejoined and left for France in June 1915 and was killed on the 17th of October 1915 during an attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt near Loos. £600-800 393. Circa 1812, possibly a souvenir of the war of that date. See The American Sword by Peterson, pgs 69-71. It is interesting to note the earlier blade, the stamp being used up until Harvey’s death in 1778. £400-600 420. HENRY CARR BOOTH SHEFFIELD BOWIE KNIFE, 23.5cm blade with spear point and faceted back edge, etched with scrolling foliage and the motto PROTECTOR PERSONAL, the forte stamped with the maker’s details H. C. BOOTH & CO SILVER STEEL SHEFFIELD, the German silver mounted hilt with visible tang, decorated with scrolling foliage and strapwork, two-piece riveted ivory grips. Some grey staining to blade, and nicks to edges and tip, retains good original polish, some crushing to mounts. See lot 3138, Rock Island Auctions, 6th December 2020 for a not dissimilar piece with scabbard which realised $4,300.
