The enamel work to the hilt and scabbard mounts is typical of that which emanated from Lucknow. £6500-7500 20

A RARE 16TH CENTURY OTTOMAN OR TURKISH BUCKLER OR SHIELD FROM THE ST IRENE ARSENAL, the 38cm convex spiralling wicker body with reddish brown leather facing, the large central metal boss with fluted decoration bearing the Arsenal stamp of Santorini, the whole secured with a border of geometric stitches, the brown leather backing with 26
leather grip. The St Irene Arsenal, formally the Haiga Eirene Church is located in Istanbul (Constantinople). The central boss is reflective of the central panel of the traditional Krug armour. Some splitting to leather backing otherwise very good. £4000-6000

A 19TH CENTURY JADE HILTED BEJEWELLED OTTOMAN JAMBIYA, 27.5cm slightly curved Wootz damascus blade chiselled with two central fullers with raised medial and outer ridges, chiselled forte decorated with foliage in gold Koftgari, characteristic white metal mounted hilt trimmed with multiple red and green stones, the two-piece riveted jade grip faceted towards the middle, the front grip with a band of white metal mounted coloured stones about the mid-point, lacking from the reverse, the pommel decorated to match, contained in its deeply chased and embossed white metal scabbard decorated with scrolling foliage and flower heads. A SCARCE LATE 17 TH CENTURY FRENCH CUIRASSIER’S SWORD, 92.5cm broadsword blade, characteristic hilt of walloon type composed of a pierced heart-shaped guard with down turned quillon, the half basket hilt composed of rounded waisted bars linked to one side with a diagonal and to the other with a scrolling support, the latter linking to the broad thumb ring, the whole secured to the spherical pommel with screws, faceted and fluted wire bound grip with Turk’s heads. This is probably an example of the so-called 1679 Pattern sword described in the French Ordnance records. It is interesting to note that this sword was discovered with an identical example - struck with a

mark at the forte in Western Scotland. It has been hypothesised that these originated from Fitzjames’s Horse during the Jacobite rising of 1745. £800-1200 278. Artillery employed at the capture of Amboyna & its dependencies in the year 1810 to Captain Court as a small testimony of the respect & admiration they have for him. In February 1810 a force of three ships carrying detachments of the Madras Artillery and the Madras European Regiment attacked the Dutch Spice Island of Amboyna. Captain Major Court commanded the shore party which also included Marines and some Seamen totalling 401 men in all. After the successful capture of Amboyna the remaining major Spice Islands surrendered without bloodshed or resistance. £5000-7000

A GEORGIAN SWORD TO COMMODORE DANCE, 80.5cm flattened diamond section fullered blade, gilt washed hilt with upturned shell guard, engraved to the interior with opposing panels of stands of arms, the D-shaped knuckle guard broadening at the midpoint and with oval plaque engraved COMMODORE SIR NATHANIEL DANCE to one side and R.E.I.V to the other, flattened lion’s head pommel, reeded ivory grip. Commodore Sir Nathaniel Dance was most famous for averting the certain destruction of a large and valuable convoy by the use of deception and daring - for which he was awarded a Knighthood. AN 1805 PATTERN NAVAL OFFICER’S SWORD TO JOESPH WILLIAM CRABBE (SIC) HMS UNITE, 81cm fullered blade with traces of etched decoration to include scrolling foliage and crowned GR cypher’s, the back edge of the forte etched with owner’s details, regulation copper gilt stirrup hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its copper gilt mounted leather scabbard, the upper mount with maker’s table for Drury. The French 40 gun ship Imperieuse was captured from the French by Admiral Gell on the 11th of October 1793 and renamed Unite in 1804. Joseph William Crabb entered the Navy on the 4th of September 1801 as a Midshipman on the Royal Sovereign then Acasta, Doris, Diamond, Chiffonne and then the Unite under Captain
Henry Chamberlayne. Crabb was involved with the capture of numerous ships, Il Ronco, Nettuno and the Touile - promoted Lieutenant. Wounded in the groin by a Langridge shot. 1811 Capture of the Dromadaire. Commanding Unite’s boats he cut out the St. Francois de Paul and later the same day took three merchant ships. Gazetted twice. After a four hour running fight with the Persanne Crabbe, senior lieutenant again distinguished himself and gazetted. The scabbard leather is replaced which is covered in a letter from Wilkinson Sword dated 1966, accompanied by various letters and research dating to 1966. It has been suggested that Crabb’s exploits form part of the basis for Hornblower. £3000-4000 117

Probably Lieutenant Robert Grant (as of 1860) who joined in Oct 1854 and went on to become Lt.-General who commanded the Royal Engineers during the 1885 Sudan Campaign. Born in Bombay, India in 1837, Grant attended Harrow and ended up being appointed a GCB in 1902. £400-600

The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse entry to our office or auction venue any member of the public. 5. The Auctioneer acts as an agent for the seller therefore your primary contact is with the seller. 6. Estimates are given as a reference only and the reserve will not be above the lower estimate. 7. Estimates do not include buyer’s premium or VAT where applicable and may be subject to change up until the auction. 8. The purchase price will be the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium which as of the 1st of March has been publicised as 22% plus VAT at the current rate PLUS any online bidding charges. 9. VAT: A system of (*) (**) are used to indicate items where varying rates of VAT are payable on the hammer price and the buyer’s premium, this occurs when items have been imported to the U.K. 10. In the instance of this auction nothing has been imported so lots which appear without either of the above symbols indicate that no VAT is payable on the hammer price. However VAT is payable on the buyer’s premium at the current rate. 11. The auctioneer is primarily an agent for the seller the onus is on the buyer to inspect the goods and to ascertain the condition the lots in which they are interested. 12. While every effort is made to ascertain the functionality of any mechanism this cannot be guaranteed to be in working order. 13. In specified circumstances lots misdescribed because they are deliberate forgeries may be returned and repayment made. Please note there is a four week time limit on this option. 14. If you are intending to export goods you should yourself make certain whether or not an export licence is required and whether or not there is any specific law relating to importing goods to that country e.g items containing materials such as ivory etc. 15. Bidders must register before the auction commences and lots will be invoiced to the address indicated on the registration form. 16. Remote payment by card will necessitate the despatch of goods to the address at which that card is registered. 17. Commission bids are taken to be your maximum hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium and VAT. 18. If you are paying by cheque that cheque will need to be cleared before removal of goods can be allowed. 21. Paying by Debit Card or Credit Card incurs no charges but we would prefer payment by Bank Transfer 22. Maximum cash payment £5,000. 23. Please bear in mind that it would be greatly appreciated if goods could be paid for within two weeks of the auction. 24. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer on the rostrum will be the buyer at that hammer price. Any dispute in this matter will be decided absolutely by the auctioneer through a reoffering of said lot or other means. 25. When bidding you agree to do so solely on your behalf and not on behalf of any third party. 26. At any stage and at our discretion a bid may be refused. 27. Title of ownership of goods will only pass to the buyer once full payment has been received. 28. Unpaid for lots: 29. Further notes for absentee bidders. All commission bids and telephone bids will be handled with the utmost professionalism but are left at your own risk and we cannot bear responsibility for the failure to execute said bids. 32. It is not uncommon for two commission bids of the same amount to be received. The company reserves the right to favour the bid first received. 33. Title and availability: The seller confirms true ownership to the auctioneer and to the buyer or is properly authorised to act on behalf of the seller and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any other claims and ultimate responsibility for ownership lies with that seller. 34.
