James Walsh operated from 60 Main Street Richmond Virginia, principally a retailer rather than a maker Walsh smuggled Colt Revolvers into the Confederate States during the American Civil War and was also believed to have been contracted for the conversion of Confederate arms to percussion, their maintenance and repair. The rather crude brass rear sight, basic repair to the left hammer and brazed swivel mounts suggest it may have been used at the defence of Richmond. £200-300 106. A MAGNIFICENT AND LARGE EXHIBITION QUALITY BOWIE KNIFE, 35.5cm clipped back blade stamped MANSON SHEFFIELD at the forte and with the UNION handshake emblem, white metal mounted hilt, the crossguard composed of two opposing heads facing the pommel, reeded wooden grip set with a white metal escutcheon to either side, one of coffin form and one of shield form, bold horse’s head pommel, contained in its white metal mounted red Morocco leather scabbard with gilt Greek key border and central foliate spray. The large size of this piece, 55.5cm over all, combined with the quality would suggest that it was either an exhibition piece, display piece or special commission. Manson of Sheffield was a prolific supplier of cutlery hilted Bowie knives in the 19th Century. £1500-2500

A LATE 16TH CENTURY ITALIAN CINQUEDEA OR SHORT SWORD, 44cm broad tapering blade with three graduated bands of shallow fullers, the whole profusely etched with cavalry and infantry battle scenes at the forte, surmounted by a crest and a figure of a nobleman, further battle scenes, lions and stands of arms, characteristic hilt with sharply down angled crossguard, broad flattened pommel with later embossed white metal inserts, etched grip, decorated with foliage and classical imagery. 72
The profile of the nobleman is probably that of Philip II of Spain, wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece and holding a baton. The blade and decoration appear to be entirely contemporary to the period suggested but unusually one or two panels have been left blank or unfinished. A small panel above the profile bust has been erased but two letters R and P can be seen. The hilt and the white metal inlays are later, probably 19th Century. ÂŁ7000-9000 73
