or the 10th year in a row, Antwerp Summer University offers intensive, short term courses during the summer months within the areas of excellence of the University of Antwerp and its partners.
Next to several interdisciplinary summer schools, summer school topics range from Law over Design Sciences to Health Sciences. Target groups are different for each summer school and may consist of students, researchers and/or professionals.
Although the programmes are intensive full-time courses, fun and interesting social programmes are organised for you during evenings and weekends. Discover all of our programmes and spend a wonderful summer in Antwerp!

Study & High academic Quality All summer schools consist of intensive full-time programmes in which a wide variety of teaching methods are used, ranging from lectures, workshops and debates to visits and seminars. Sessions are taught by international speakers and experts from both within and outside the academic world. For some programmes, participants are required to do some preparatory reading or take an examination/ make an assignment at the end of the course. An intensive learning experience with maximum impact is guaranteed thanks to the international composition of the classroom, the interactive set-up of the courses and the approachability of the lecturers.
Social Programme To keep the minds fresh and to maximise interaction, a wide variety of fun and interesting social activities will be organised during evenings and weekends so participants can make the most of their stay in Antwerp. Participants will not only have the opportunity to get to know their class-mates and professors in a more informal way, but will also be able to get in touch with students attending other summer schools at Antwerp Summer University.

A visit to the enormous port, a networking reception, a guided city walk, a quiz night, a football game and a day-trip to other Belgian cities such as Bruges and Brussels are only some examples of these activities. All activities of the social programme are offered free of charge, in some cases participants will be asked for a deposit which will be reimbursed upon participation to the activity. Combine study and pleasure and spend a happy summer in Antwerp!

The Children’s Literature Summer School offers plenary lectures, workshops and optional excursions related to books for children and adolescents. It focuses on four thematic strands: Comics, Diversity, Fairy Tales and Fantasy.

Digital Humanities: Basic Skills for Digital Archives and Editions When

In Digital Humanities, digital editing and digitisation of archival documents are rapidly gaining prominence. Our summer school offers an intensive and practice-oriented 5-day course on making digital editions and managing digital collections. In the context of Digital Archives, participants will acquire a set of basic computer skills (command line, operating systems, and networks) while setting up a IIIF-compliant image server for sharing and reusing facsimiles of literary manuscripts. In the context of Digital Editions, participants will learn to transcribe these images in TEI-compliant XML and to visualise their transcriptions by transforming them into HTML using XSLT.

Participants will improve two academic English skills. They will learn to write correct, transparent papers by focusing on paper structure, relevant grammar and academic vocabulary. In addition, they will explore typical presentation phrases and techniques that will make their presentations more effective and professional. The Enlightenment is back. In public debates, in the media and in political speech, the Enlightenment is a live issue. It is invoked as a constitutive feature of modernity and often rhetorically crafted as a signifier of distinctively Western values and institutions. These contemporary uses of the Enlightenment will be critically examined and discussed in relation to key eighteenth-century philosophical texts on the question of Enlightenment.

This summer school is all about reconstructing historical book ownership. The different types of sources containing information about readers and their books in the past will be explored. The speakers look into the various methods that can be used to collect and interpret information gathered from catalogues, inventories, and the physical books themselves. Critical Approaches to Typography. Research into the interaction between typographic conventions and the digital age. When

This summer school will discuss the value of research for type and typography. The keywords are ‘Perception’, ‘History’, ‘Convention’, ‘Technology’ and ‘Legibility’. How much can be distilled from the study of historical type materials in the collection of the Museum Plantin-Moretus? At the same time we will study how font technology has developed since the 1970s, and look at what became technically possible.

Academic circles as well as governments have only grown the focus on urban logistics in recent years. E-commerce and last-mile delivery surge enormously, but also the problems they bring to cities. Planning and managing the urban transport in urban areas under a dynamic context as today logistics is key for city sustainable development. This course provides the necessary background, knowledge and skills to do so, with in the first week an introductory module covering all aspects of urban logistics, and in the second week an optional assignment preparation week focusing on innovation and sustainability in the industry, in all its facets.

This summer school focuses on key legal considerations for companies crossing borders. This will be done from various perspectives: mergers & acquisitions, (aggressive) tax (planning), labour, intellectual property, insolvency, international contracts, social dumping and human rights. The summer school includes a case relating to companies involved in a cross-border take-over situation, to be solved by the students in groups throughout the summer school. The students’ solutions are discussed interactively and extensively in tutorials from the aforementioned various perspectives.

This basic 5-day course teaches the participants how to conduct a qualitative research starting from a research question, and how to pro gress to writing a scientific paper. Experienced qualitative researchers of international repute will lead the course and share their experience in a variety of research projects. The third edition of the ALGAR summer school is dedicated to the theory of involutions on central simple algebras, their invariants and their relations to quadratic forms and linear algebraic groups. Europe’s demography in terms of ethno-cultural composition is rapidly diversifying in an unprecedented way. This topic has become a priority issue for policymakers at the national and EU-level. There is a great concern on how to deal adequately with superdiversity as it affects all realms of society. The third edition of the Summer School ‘Europe: Diversity and Migration’ addresses these issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and provides participants with insights, information and tools based on theoretical perspectives, empirical case studies and several field visits.

Practical Information Language of Instruction English is the language of instruction of all programmes within Antwerp Summer University. As active participation is compulsory in all courses, English proficiency in reading, speaking and writing is required. Application Procedure in 5 Steps 1. Go via www.uantwerp.be/ASU to the programme you would like to apply for. 2. Open the online registration tool (Mobility Online). 3. Fill in personal details, upload some documents and complete extra questions. 4. Wait for approval of your application. 5. Pay the participation fee within 10 days after approval to secure your spot. Specific entry requirements, application deadlines and cancellation policies vary between summer schools. Please refer to the webpage of your preferred summer school to find out more.
Scholarships and reduced fees University of Antwerp students are entitled to a refund of €150 after submitting a certificate of attendance to the Antwerp Summer University Office. Some summer schools offer scholarships or reduced registration fees for specific target groups. Please refer to the website of the summer school of your preference to verify whether there is a scholarship you would be eligible for. For each summer school, a limited number of reduced registration fees (€50 or €100) is available for recognised refugees. Please visit www.uantwerp.be/ASU for more information. Credits and Certificates ECTS credits are awarded for successful completion of the programmes. The number of credits varies between summer schools. Recognition of credits in the home curriculum should be agreed upon with the home institution. It is the participant’s responsibility to do so. In this regard, a course information sheet can be provided for each summer school.

Students are expected to attend all classes, complete all exercises and sit for final examinations (if applicable). Students who attend all the classes will receive a certificate of attendance. Moreover, students who pass the evaluation will receive a certificate of successful completion. Visa If you are a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland, you may travel to Belgium on the strength of a national passport or identity card. Moreover, citizens from certain countries don’t need a visa for a stay of maximum 90 days either. The full list is available on our website. Upon acceptance and after payment, you can request a visa invitation letter through Mobility Online, the online application platform. For some countries and in some periods, approval by the Belgian authorities can take up to three months. Make sure you start the visa application procedure well in advance!
Getting Around The University of Antwerp has 9 campuses located in the city centre as well as in the the outskirts of Antwerp. Most summer schools will take place at, or close to, the Stadscampus. Biking is the easiest and fastest way to get around, although a dense public transportation network also allows you to easily travel by bus or tram. Getting to Antwerp Antwerp is located in the centre of Belgium and is easily accessible by plane, train, car and bus. The international airport of Brussels (Zaventem) is the most frequently used gateway to Antwerp, but you might also want to consider the low-cost airport of Brussels South or the very nearby airport of Antwerp itself. Antwerp is also very easy to reach by train. Inter
national railway lines link Brussels and Antwerp to several other major European cities. Lastly, international buses also frequent the city centre of Antwerp, which might be the cheapest option to get here. Did you know that Antwerp’s Central train station was awarded as the most beautiful railway station in the world by New York’s Mashable in 2014?

Cost of Living Antwerp is an affordable alterna– tive to many others European cities. Registration fees, and what is included in these fees, vary between summer schools. In general, all course materials, coffee breaks and social programme activities are included in the registration fee. If accommodation is not included, students should count for €20 - €90 per night, depending on the type. Students receive a student card with which they are entitled to a discounted price at student restaurants. All participants are insured for third party liability and accidents during summer school activities. Additional insurances (e.g. health and travel), as well as travel costs are the participant’s own responsibility.

Antwerp has many different accommodation options to offer, ranging from student rooms over youth hostels to classic hotel rooms. Most summer schools organised at Antwerp Summer University take place at the Stadscampus of the University of Antwerp. This campus is located in the so called “University area” close to the city center. Accepted students will be provided with a list of housing options in different price categories and at different locations. Prices range from €20 to €90 per night, depending on the type of accommodation. For some
summer schools, accommodation is included in the package. Facilities at the University Accepted students will be registered as regular students of the University of Antwerp and will hence receive a student account and a student card which gives them access to computer labs, libraries, Wi-Fi network and the discounted prices of the catering facilities of the University of Antwerp.
After comparing similar courses at other European Universities, I chose to attend Antwerp Summer University because of its promising programme in a lively city. The high-quality education, exquisite on-site services and international vibe of the city were even better than expected. The low cost of living was a nice surplus. I would definitely come back!
