01. Amphibious House Project Type : Amphibious House (Architectural Thesis) Location : Muzaffatpur,Bihar. Site Area : 42000 sqm.

Natural disaster is seen in contemporary literature as consequential events that are set in motion by natural hazards resulting in loss of life, damage to existent infrastructure and destruction of housing. This project aims to offer guiding criteria for flood resilient housing recovery after natural disaster, with particular emphasis on permanent housing solutions. The design is focused on housing and resilient techniques used in vernacular house forms. The development of housing community by incorporating different modern materials.

5

The Rationale of the study

Floods are among the most disastrous natural calamities. The intergovernmental panel On climate change (ipcc) predicts that climate change is likely to cause an increase in flood Hazards in many areas of the world. Flood damage to agriculture, households, livelihoodsystems, infrastructure and public utilities amount each year, in addition to the loss of precious human and cattle life. The on-going loss of infrastructure, property, human life, crops, agricultural land, and livestock during floods results in huge personal and economic loss. Continuous damage to infrastructure and reduced access to health and social services makes it difficult for rural communities to get out of extreme poverty or have a new start

Site Profile

Why Bihar ?

Bihar is india’s most floodprone state, with 76% population in the north bihar living under the recurring threat of flood devastation.About 73.06% Of bihar’s geographical area, ie 68,800 square kilometres (26,600 sq mi) out of 94,160 square kilometres (36,360 sq mi), is flood affected. The problem is particularly acute in north bihar, where almost 76% of the population--about 50 million people--lives under the constant threat of floods. Bihar is facing the impact of climate change, rainfall patterns here are getting Disturned. Rains come in bouts followed by long dry spells.

Site Plan

‘Bihar floods a political disaster not a natural one’

About the site

Shekhpur, muzaffarpur is located at 25°54′- 26°23′n and 84°53’ -85°45’e. It has an average elevation of 170 meters (557 feet). The geographical area of muzaffarpur is 317591 hectare. There are many important rivers around the district like bagmati, gandak, burhi gandak and lakhandeyee which leave a highly fertile land. The district has generally a humid climate except during summer which is rather Dry. The site plan consists of a thick alluvial mantle of drift origin overlying in most part. The soil is mainly young Loam rejuvenated every year by constant deposition of silt, clay and sand brought by different streams.

Concept- Recreating Imagery

The basic human need for a person residing in flood prone area is to get a habitable space , means of earning/survival and to stay safe during flood based on which i have tried to achieve 3 strategies for the possible solution i.e, Protection,Production and Connection.

Concept Behind Floating

According to the archimedes’ principle, the upward force, the fluid subjects the object to, is the same as the weight of fluid volume misplaced by the object (impulse | = density of the fluid x volume of misplaced fluid x gravity’s acceleration). It has to be greater than the weight of the object on it (p = density of the object x volume of the object x gravity’s acceleration). As the volume of misplaced fluid is the same as the object’s submerged volume, the decisive factor in the calculations is the density. Summarizing, , the premise I (or dr) > p (or do) has to be verified.

P

Ptotection

Production

Connection

The concept of an amphibious house requires a buoyant foundation system.Used plastic barrels (drums) are easily found in bihar. They are used tostore industrial waste and other substances. As for the projects foundations , those with 208 ltr capacity have been used . They are cheap and durable and required no maintenance.

10

Stage describes the ideal stage of the structure where no Signs of flood is present then after house starts leaving its ideal stage to elevating stage.

In this stage the flood occurs and the process of Amphibious house initiates.

I

The plan of the House is rectilinear having a circulation along the length which connects the two zones of the unit . There are two zones in the project one part contains the served space which contains multipurpose and sleeping area and the other part houses the service which is wash , kitchen , toilet , cattle keeping area , attic and storage in both the levels . In between these two zones a courtyard is designed. The two zones are borderd by gardens each side with extended verandah . The whole platform is raised on columns that helps to raise at times of flooding . It changes its height as the water level goes up . The footings of those columns are strong enough to keep the unit stable upto 1.5 m high water level during flood . Entrance of the unit is provided with a ramp which ensures accesiibility of differently able people .

Materials

The preliminary design statement for the Amphibious Bamboo was for it to be a lightweight structure that retains the traditional style of housing. The structure is to be built mainly from bamboo, where it is abundan locally and can be easily treated for preservation. By examining the local housing types and traditional ways of living in Bihar, the structure is to be built on stilts for it to be able to withstand minor floods.

Floating detail of pathway

The materials used in this project are all abased on vernacular architecture found around rural areas, with the expection of foundations plastic barrels.WOOVEN BAMBOO is used for façade of the house. Corrugated galvanized iron sheets are used for the roofing to further lighten the weight of the house. This material is lightweight, readily available, and a more durable alternative to thatch roofs.

A flood resitient agriculture system, namely Hydroponics (or growing plants in water), has been given,to meet increasing demand vegetables during flood season.

• Hydroponics is an approach of soil less agriculture where water is considered as the basic medium of plant growth with inputs of nutrient into water. • In its simplest form, a fioating raft system for locally grown consists of a sheet of foam with holes cut in it for the net pots that will hold the plants

02. Hotel

Project Type : Hotel Location : Punjab Site Area :12140.57 sqm.

In the past, people travelled for business or pleasure, but today, they travel for both. Business travelers want the option of getting to know the area and sights in the towns and cities they visit, and need easy access to activities that they can fit in around their business schedule.

Punjab is a state in northern India. Forming part of the larger Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, the state is bordered by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the north and northeast, Haryana to the south and southeast, and Rajasthan to the southwest, by the Indian union territory of Chandigarh to the east, and by the region of Jammu and Kashmir administered by India as a union territory, to the north. It is also the site of some of his greatest architectural creations. The city has had far-reaching impact, ushering in a modern idiom of architecture and city planning all over Indi. It is as famous for its landscaping as for its architectural ambience.

PLACING THE BUILDING:

Form And Conceot

Wind Direction and Orientation- The Building is N-W Oriented.Maximum number of rooms donot experience the West Sun and wheever required reflective glass is used so as to reflect back maximum solar radiation. As the region experiences wind from N-W to S-E for most of the year, so placement of building properly fits according to wind direction. Swimming Pool in front so as to allow cool air to flow while kitchen and back of the house faces S-W.

The generic appearance of the building: the volumetry, form and shape of the building, captured in essence and not in detail is- as the floors increases the area of the upgoing floor decreases that is creating visual interest using levels. This levelling is done to give height to the building while also providing comon areas/ balconies for the guests onvarious floors Movement through the site: Types of roads(A) main access road: entry for guests. The road leads to both basement and surface parking. (B) exit road: direct exit after drop off (C) service road: for trucks and other service providing vehicle access from cbd’s service road. (D) staff road: entry and exit for staff. The road leads to both basement and surface parking. Access to the building: (A) guest entry: from drop off (B) service entry: located in back of the house (C) basement : for staff or guest parking . Site plan

Project Type : Urban transformation Location : Punjab university, Chandigarh

About the site

The site is loacated in Punjab university, Chandigarh , is a liminal connecting space that remains in the backdrop to highlight the connect with category or reference point. The space is a negelcted space which is only used to link the spaces but it’s exixting was not yet recognised properly.

Top view

The site is planned and moulded in such a way so as to create sustainable designed space. Use of materials like rammed earth , grass backer, dried netimer grass bamboo etc has helped the dess to achieve the sustainability standards to an extent. Moreover some / material from the demolition sites was also used. These elements have been worked and evolved from cinematica equipments to blend and harmonize the betwixt space with the building and the purpose.

Reeled wall structure

Directions

40

Punjab univerwsity

The path is designed evolving the form from a camera reel which creates beautiful shadows on the ground in two different times of the day ( according to the sunpath studied ) . Rammed earth is used as material to create this wall structure, these structures endure indefinitely and can be constructed for less than two - thirds of the cost of standard frame houses . Soil is a widely available, inexpensive and sustainable resource.

Roofing - Roofing of thr path is designed with basically two materials pur alternatively.i.e,-

1- Polycarbonate sheets -The sheets have various listed properties as high clarity and light transmission , high heat resistance , weather and uv resistant excellent impact strength , thermoformable intermediate ,

2- Dried vetivar grass - This is placed on alternate wooden meshes in the roof of

terrace : vetiver grass has a better quality for roof thatching as the culms and leaves of : vetiver are coated with wax , and have a unique scent that repels insect and fungal attacks . The thatches with more or denser vetiver grass will be more durable and sustainable .

Camera holding the tree - The sculpture of a camera holding a tree is placed at a focal pot in the site utilizing the tree’ssize ano dominance at the site camera is created using waste materials as rims and tubes of tyres , and other materials from demolition site. Here camera is theatre and tree is imagined as a struggling person who wants to ecxel the field of theatre indeed .

Grass backer - This is a heavy duty thick slip resistant polyethylene plastic mesh grid for re-

inforcing and protecting grassed surfaces prone to wear , rutting which can result in a muddy surface incapable of withstanding pedestrian traffic . Instead putting some solid material , the backer was put in the path to preserve grass and create a path at the same time.

Filming the film

This isthe focused elemant of the site which is a 6’ height wall that narrates the tale of human’s injustified bhaviour towards nature by painting different frames of story which ultimately leaves the viewers with a buring questio and consequently a nature preserving message.
