“One of the most vital arts organisations in southern England” The Times
We are a charity
The Anvil Trust is the charity behind Anvil Arts, the largest performing arts organisation in Hampshire that operates three fantastic cultural venues.
We bring many big names to Basingstoke and attract 200,000 people into the town centre each year, who visit shops, bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as The Anvil , The Haymarket and The Forge.
Trust members are local people with specific skills to ensure we meet our charitable objectives. For further details, please contact the Chief Executive.
As an independent charity we can:
• Make sure that we present a variety of performances for a wide range of audiences, both popular and specialist
• Help Basingstoke gain a reputation as a town with a strong cultural offer, punching above its weight on the national stage
• Give opportunities to local children, schools and colleges, young musicians and performers
• Work to benefit people on the autistic spectrum and people with dementia, their carers and families, with specially designed projects
• Partner with other charities, both local and national, to make our resources go further
• Apply for investment from Arts Council England and other support organisations
• Make sure that any surplus is reinvested in our work to benefit people in Basingstoke and Hampshire, making the Borough a better place to live and work
Foyer opening hours and pre-show service
We will send you a text message 24–48 hours before the performance, with a link to your tickets and other information about your visit. There’s also a quick and easy way to pre-order your drinks. Foyers open from 6pm for evening performances.

London Classic Theatre present What The Butler Saw
by Joe OrtonLondon Classic Theatre (Abigail’s Party) return with What The Butler Saw
Within the pristine walls of his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prenticeis interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter with Nick Beckett, blackmailer and bell boy at the Station Hotel.
In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector, and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own.
What The Butler Saw is Joe Orton’s final, most ambitious play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton focuses his wicked sense of humour on a range of establishment targets. He unflinchingly explores comic territory few playwrights before or since have dared to visit.
During Joe Orton’s short, dazzling career, he shocked, outraged, and delighted audiences with his riotous black comedies, including Loot and Entertaining Mr Sloane

Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 in E flat major Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 in F minor
Elspeth Dutch horn
Stephen Scotchmer
Sibelius’ much-loved tone poem Finlandia captures its national pride at a crucial moment in its history. Elspeth Dutch, leader of the CBSO horn section will perform Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1. This immediately appealing yet challenging concerto was written for Strauss’ father Franz. Beginning with his Symphony No. 4, Tchaikovsky began a musical exploration of the concept of Fate as an inescapable force. Certainly fate blasts open and closes the Symphony, but the beautiful oboe solo in the Andantino movement and the playfulness of the Scherzo make us forget for a while the inescapable force that hangs over us.
