Palengke Jules Capucion

KAIROS

A palengke is a type of public market common throughout the Philippines. The word palengke is a local variant spelling of the Spanish word palenque, literally meaning "(wooden) palisade or stockade" and by extension the area enclosed by such a structure for defines, public festivals or some other purpose. A palengke is usually composed of several dozen stalls arranged in rows under a shared roof. Management is usually by the local governmental units whose jurisdiction encompasses the physical location of the markets. (Wikipedia)

Painted Photographs Mario Parial (1944-2013)

By way of paying tribute to the late Mario Parial, this issue of Kairos will feature a selection of photos from Mario Parial's exhibit entitled "The Peripatetic Process of Parial's Painted Photographs". "Art pieces rendered by a visual artist are just another form of art expression", according to Parial (Philippine Daily Inquirer, September 16, 2012 edition). "I found some of my negatives from as early as 1973, printed them in the darkroom and painted on them with acrylic, pastel and pencil, crosshatches with felt tip markers and paper collages, and other found medium, rendering photographs finished with techniques I developed as a painter and from my early experience with the printmaking process." "Everything changes when there is light." ~ Mario Parial

PARIAL is a graphic artist, sculptor, painter and a teacher, all rolled into one. He graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Santo Tomas where he also taught printmaking and painting. Known for his folk and mythological interest in his art where the woman figure is central to the composition, he has garnered top prizes from almost all the leading art competition in the country. In 1972, the Cultural Center of the Philippines honored him as one of the year's Thirteen Artist awardees.

(c) Dennis Leonardo

He has exhibited extensively in the Philippines and in other countries since his first solo show in 1965. As a fine arts student at UST in the early 1960s, Parial left a marked impression as a graphic artist doing mainly rubbercuts and woodcuts, but indulging in etching, serigraphy and lithography on the side. He actively continued to produce prints until the late 1960s. The succeeding decade of the 1970s saw Parial engaged in sporadic print productions. After which he swiftly switched to acrylic and oil painting, a vocation he has immersed himself into the present. A Sunday at Hacienda Luisita Anwrdn Macaraig

KAIROS

Hacienda Luisita is a sugar plantation located in the province of Tarlac, Philippines, owned by the Cojuangco family, which includes the late former President Corazon C. Aquino and her son, incumbent President Benigno S. Aquino III. The hacienda spans various municipalities in the province, including the capital Tarlac City. (Wikipedia) "Hacienda Luisita has long been a symbol of the failure of land reform programs in a nation that suffers from a sharp division between rich and poor." (AFP, Inquirer.net August 3, 2013) We arrived at around noon time and a medical mission was being held there at a multi-purpose area sometime in December of 2011. Then we proceeded to take photos at the nearby rice field and to the‘picket line’ and finally near the Central Azucarera de Tarlac where in 2004, 14 people were killed and hundreds injured in a clash between protesters and the police (Wikipedia). The photos are my impressions of the place.

Million People March Teddy Arellano Baru Dacasin Mark Valle Dumandan Digoy Isleta Jay Javier

KAIROS

The Million People March is the first of an ongoing series of protests in the Philippines calling for the total abolition of the Pork Barrel fund, triggered by public anger over the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam. Initial calls circulated through social media (mainly on Facebook and Twitter) to convene a protest on August 26, 2013 at Luneta Park in Manila as well as other cities nationwide and overseas. Some media commentators consider this as the first ever massive rally in the Philippines called and organised mostly through social media channels. (Wikipedia) On November, 2013, the Supreme Court of the Philippines declared PDAF as unconstitutional. A glimpse of the protest.

Wawa Dam Mark Valle Dumandan

KAIROS Wawa Dam (also known as Montalban Dam) is a gravity dam constructed over the Marikina River in the municipality of Rodriguez in Rizal province, Philippines. The slightly arched dam is situated in the 360-metre (1,180 ft) high Montalban Gorge or Wawa Gorge, a water gap in the Sierra Madre Mountains, east of Manila. It was built in 1909 during the American colonial era to provide the water needs for Metro Manila. It used to be the only source of water for Manila until Angat Dam was built and Wawa was abandoned. Due to insufficiency of water supply for Metro Manila, there was a strong clamor to reuse the dam. (Wikipedia) A photo essay of the community along the 115-year old dam.

Facade Raymond Tanhueco

KAIROS submissions Many times, what we see in others' faces or demeanor are not real. We don't realise this because we believe only what appears before our eyes. We fail to see beyond an exterior that tries to hide a less pleasant reality. Or on the flip side, maybe a wonderful instance suppressed by an outward appearance of cheerlessness. A cheerful mood to conceal a hurting soul. A sweet smile to disguise an evil thought. A calm voice to... Wait, these are just images of hackneyed walls and closed doors. What am I talking about?! Maybe I'm just the cynic who believes that every face put up to me is but a deceptive front. Or maybe, this is just a facade I myself am putting up in an effort to show a semblance of photographic artistry. Whatever. To me, my thoughts and these images are simply a beautiful happenstance.
