Welcome...

Photo: Paulette Donnellon

If you’re reading this, you’re probably aware of one of Southern California’s most incredible natural resources, less than two hours from the coast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Despite this being a desert, there is nothing barren about it! As part of the larger Sonoran Desert, Anza-Borrego hosts about 1,500 species of native plants and animals, thousands of important archaeological sites in what is the traditional homeland of the Kumeyaay and Cahuilla people, diverse geologic features like slot canyons, badlands, and wind caves, and important paleontology, including the most complete Pleistocene fossil record on the planet. Anza-Borrego is the largest state park in California at about 650,000 acres and the second largest state park in the contiguous US.

Anza-Borrego Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, plays a crucial role in supporting the Park. We work directly to raise funds, conserve land, fund relevant research, and educate the public. The Park vets all of our education programs. Our mission is to bring the desert experience to as many people as possible, whether by bringing them to the desert or by bringing the desert to them. We achieve this through a range of programs such as teacher professional development, school field trips, guided hikes, drives, camping, and art and mindfulness workshops. Your donations, registration fees, and memberships directly contribute to increasing access to this iconic desert for all, and fund our free and low-cost programming, scholarships, and online programming.

I hope to see you in the Park this season!

Scholarships & Tribal Access for Programs

A limited number of scholarships are available for those with financial hardship. If you’d like to request a scholarship, please email Emily@theabf.org with a 2-3 paragraph description of why you want to attend a program and your need for a scholarship.

We also offer free programs for tribal members and descendants. To register, please email Emily@theabf.org.

Some programs may not be eligible.

Over the past two years, we've increased the number of education programs by a staggering TWELVE times, expanded free programs, and tripled our education staff to support program growth. And we're not slowing down! We have ambitious plans to engage more volunteers and strategically broaden our offerings.

Our goals for next year include:

Connect with new and ongoing stakeholders to create maximum impact

Invite new partnerships in all our program areas

Develop a sustainable fee structure through grants, donations, fee-based, and subsidized programming

Identify and engage new demographics to increase access to the Park

Continue to increase our capacity for expanding education programs

As the official nonprofit partner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, ABF carefully plans with integrity and quality so that we may fulfill our vision of sharing the beauty of the Park while protecting this public land.

One of Anza-Borrego Foundation’s biggest priorities and longest running programs is Camp Borrego, our fifth-grade environmental science camp. Since 2004, Camp Borrego has brought students from low income and underserved communities throughout San Diego to the Park for a three-day, two-night camping experience. Fifth-grade students arrive at Borrego Palm Canyon campground to embark on what is the very first camping trip for many. The students learn how to set up tents and become comfortable in their outdoor home for the next three days. They explore the outdoor environment where they often see frogs and tadpoles, fish, bugs, lizards, and cottontail bunnies. Students get backstage access to the Paleontology and Archaeology labs at the State Park headquarters, learn about the night sky, search for scorpions under blacklight and finish their second night with s’mores (a first for many).

We could not ask for more curious and engaged groups. Students consistently have smiles on their faces and we always hear about how they “don’t want to leave camp,” “they miss camp already,” and hope to “stay for as long as possible.” We are grateful to be able to create this experience for students, which is funded entirely by donations! It is our goal to expand Camp Borrego to eventually include more schools throughout surrounding counties and to provide an unforgettable and safe outdoor experience for youth in the Anza-Borrego Desert.
