PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Corporate governance can be defined as the system by which companies are controlled. The ANZCVS is a notfor-profit, public company limited by guarantee, and as such, is subject to the Corporations Act and administered to by ASIC. The Council of the College is the elected Board of Directors, who are tasked with overseeing the governance of the organisation. The essential functions of corporate governance for the ANZCVS include:

• Defining and monitoring the strategic direction of the organisation and thus driving performance

• Defining policies and procedures to ensure the College operates within the legal and social requirements of its environment

• Establishing control and accountability systems within the College’s operations to conform to the legal requirements and the expectations of members;

• Reviewing and monitoring management and College performance

There is continual evolution of the Council, as new members are elected, and Councillors step down after their term(s) of appointment. As such, it is imperative that there is not a reliance on institutional knowledge of an individual, and that roles, responsibilities, policies and processes are clearly defined.

One of the strategic focus areas of the current Council is Governance. A Governance Working Group was established by Councillor David Tabrett two years ago, with its initial aim to review current College governance documents but have a

finite end. However, the stewardship of the College is of high importance to Council, and as such, the Governance Working Group has been established as a more permanent subcommittee of the Council, and renamed the Governance Committee, to be in line with the other Council subcommittees. David has stepped down from the Committee due to his role as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance and Risk Committee, and I thank him for instituting this work. Councillor Carolyn Guy has been elected Chair of the Governance Committee and has already begun to progress its ongoing work.

The Council could not effectively undertake its strategic oversight role, though, without having a strong management team to deliver on the operational and management duties. Stephen Alderman was employed in February 2020 and has been a calm yet astute CEO, leading the office team through the shifting tides of COVID. His three year contract has been extended an additional two years to allow him to oversee delivery of the projects that have commenced under his watch. Dr Mary Anne Hiscutt continues to manage the office diligently and effectively, and is the longest serving staff member, having joined the ANZCVS office in August 2014. Jenny Burnett joined the College in November 2021 as the Examinations Officer and assisted in the delivery of the first online written examinations in 2022, with the assistance of Jill Meatheringham. Rhonda Hodge and Sharyn Logan, as administration officers, continue their work in the general operations of the College, including member engagement.

Dr Rachel Tan completes the current office team as the Project Officer and has made terrific headway on the Examination Evolution and Support project, a significant strategic goal of Council. As a Council (Board of Directors) who are located distant from the operations of the organisation, it can be difficult to ensure that the business and organisation are being managed effectively. However, when Council had the opportunity to meet with these relatively new staff face-to-face in June this year, it was clear that there was a good relationship between them and they all shared the same passion for the organisation as we, the members, do. As the year rapidly draws to a close, I feel proud of where the College is placed today, and to look back over the year to acknowledge all the achievements. Time does not stand still and there is more work to be executed in the new year. Council is committed to ensuring that the ANZCVS continues to deliver certifying examinations that are of world-class standard, but in a way that is sustainable into the future.

They are also committed to help deliver an engaging and relevant conference, College Science Week, which will be held in the Gold Coast Exhibition and Conference Centre in 2023. This is a larger venue that will accommodate the increasing number of Chapters that wish to present high-quality content, and a larger cohort of industry exhibitors who also wish to interact with our stellar conference delegates.

Season’s Greetings to you all, Amy

CEO REPORT

As 2022 comes to a close, I want to thank the many Member volunteers assisting us throughout the year. You contribute thousands of hours to the College community enabling the continued evolution of Examinations and Science Week, and we are very grateful.

Examination applications have now closed for 2023, and we currently have over 350 Candidates across 25 subjects.

Our recent Examinations workshop was very well attended, and it was great to see how well everyone participated in the breakout sessions. Thank you to our presenters for the

day, Dr Jen Carter, Dr Sharanne Raidal and Dr Cathy Beck.

We are busy updating and refining the online examination platform for the 2023 examination cycle. Thank you to the candidates, examiners and observers who provided their valuable feedback.

Examinations will begin on the 6th of June, 2023. The list of key dates is available on the ANZCVS website under “Examination Information.”

Science Week is moving to the Gold Coast Convention and Entertainment centre, which is very exciting and provides additional space and features to Chapters and Trade Exhibitors. I hope to see many of you there.

Our Science Week Committee is looking for a new Program Coordinator as Wendy Goodwin adds the role of President of the VAA Chapter to her very busy schedule. Wendy has been a pivotal contributor to the Science Week Committee over several years, and the Committee will greatly miss her experience, knowledge and support. The Science Week Program Coordinator role will be advertised shortly.

Although there remain many areas of uncertainty in society as the year closes, our College community continues to thrive. This is due to the commitment and resilience of our community that sustains and advances the College.

EXAMINATIONS REPORT

As the year draws to a close, I would like to take a few moments to thank all of our College office staff, Council members, Board of Examiners members, and examiners and observers for their incredible contributions to the College examinations process in 2022. It was an exciting year with a huge number of candidates and the introduction of our electronic examination system, and we couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you!

On Sunday, 27 November we held our second annual virtual Examiner’s Workshop. We decided to stick with the virtual format as the feedback from last year was positive and, by not requiring travel, it is more inclusive to examiners

both in Australia and New Zealand and around the world. We also invited chapter members who were interested in the examinations process as well as Subject Examinations Committee members to participate. Jen Carter, Sharanne Raidal, and Cathy Beck presented on exam blueprint creation, writing higher order questions, writing high quality marking rubrics, and writing higher order multiple choice questions. This year each presentation was supported by small group breakout rooms with application tasks for each topic. The breakout rooms generated robust conversation and collaboration and the groups came back together to ask questions and offer review and critique to each other back in the main room. Attendance was strong

throughout the day and lots of great questions were brought to the table.

We hope that everyone has a wonderful and restful holiday period, and we look forward to “seeing” examining teams again in the virtual space in late January or early February for our facilitated exam revision sessions.

EXAMINATION EVOLUTION & SUPPORT

ANZCVS has been certifying at Membership and Fellowship level for close to 50 years and has considerable experience in administering quality exams.

As part of a culture of continuous review, in 2021, two independent external examination reviewers were engaged who confirmed that the current system is of high quality.

They commended the College’s commitment to assessment policies, practice of high transparency and clear culture of continuous improvement.

The ANZCVS has established an Examination Evolution and Support Project to review and implement changes suggested by these reviews. This is comprised of President Amy Lane, CEO Stephen Alderman, Chief Examiner Jennifer Carter, Assistant Chief Examiner Lydia Hambrook, Councillors Cathy Beck and Zoe Lenard, Examinations Manager Mary Anne Hiscutt and Project Manager Rachel Tan.

One of the objectives of the EES Project relates to Multiple Choice Questions. Specifically:

• Long term objective: Provide a management plan for 50% of papers to be MCQ (target 2030)

• Short term objective (target 2024)

3 Enlist large or volunteer Chapters for development of a question bank that may be independent of use in examinations – range of 15-20 questions per paper

3 Initiate pathway for MCQ submission from Members/ Fellows and Candidates

3 Produce plan to establish training, review and feedback on MCQ development

3 Engage consultants and/or working groups in April/May 2023 to assist BoE rework MCQs that are not yet set at higher order level

The College is currently in the process of recruiting of volunteer Membership subjects to be involved in the training for MCQ writing to develop questions for MCQ banking. If you would like more information on the process or are interested in participating, please contact the members of your Chapter Executive to register your support.

Interested Chapters will be compiling a list of teams who will be contacted as a group and allocated ANZCVS email addresses and passwords if they already do not have one. This will allow access to group resources, training and submission portals. Submitted questions will be reviewed by subject matter experts and feedback provided with the view to establishing an MCQ Bank for the Subject.

CHAPTER RESOURCE PORTAL INFORMATION

The College can construct SharePoint websites that can act as Resource Portals for Chapters. This can allow Chapters to have central pages for Members and Candidates to communicate information, store information and hold community discussion.

An example of a home page of a Chapter portal is displayed below.

Please find below 4 video links about the platform and its functionality:

• Platform Overview: https://vimeo. com/646220190/d3f6e750c5

• Customising the Platform: https://vimeo.com/646222038/ da81f0d932

• Adding Teams to create a Journal Club: https://vimeo. com/646222449/232da6fbb2

If you are interested in assisting your Chapter in the administration of a portal or have an idea how this might work well for a Subject/event, please submit it to your Chapter executive members for consideration.

If you have any questions or feedback on any of the above content or projects, please contact me via email at po@anzcvs.org.au

ANIMAL REPRODUCTION CHAPTER

Hello ANZCVS colleagues

Spring and summer are always busy times for Theriogenologists as most of our patients have delivered their spring time offspring and we are looking to assisting them in conceiving for their next deliveries.

It has been an interesting time for all of us here in the east of Australia, and the wet weather looks to be continuing for at least a wee while yet.

The Thoroughbred foaling season will be drawing to a close, and breeding will likely be finished for most mares before Christmas. Other breeders will continue on to early next year. Then the selling season starts for the offspring from last year. The seasonal calving cows, and the ewes, will also mostly have finished having their offspring, which will hopefully have survived the wet conditions and are now thriving on the pastures that have grown with the rain. Cattle vets will be working with clients to have bulls and cows ready for the imminent breeding season.

Our small animal colleagues will continue working away at ensuring we have pets for the future, especially those undertaking the welfare friendly trans cervical insemination of female canines. Our Science Week committee is working away at developing a program for the SW23, which is likely to include collaboration with other chapters including the animal welfare chapter on aspects of welfare and reproduction.

For those in the Reproduction Chapter, thanks to Xavier Schneider, who we now welcome as a Diplomate ACT (congratulations to Xavier), we have a discussion list to enhance discussions on all things reproduction. Those who have not joined the list, please contact Xavier to register (Xavier.Schneider@ qldvetspecialists.com.au) and join in the vibrant discussions.

May everyone have a safe, pleasant and not too busy Christmas period.

Reproduction chapter committee.

ANIMAL WELFARE CHAPTER

2023 Science Week

Preparations are well underway for a brilliant program for Science Week 2023. Ably led by our convenor Michelle Clatworthy, the chapter executive and members have provided great ideas for topics and speakers including an international line-up. Although not finalized, at this stage we are working on joint sessions with Veterinary Reproduction, Veterinary Behaviour, Medicine and Management of Laboratory Animals and Veterinary Public Health. So there is no shortage of diverse and interesting topics to be explored!

2023 Study Guide Review

The Chapter has commenced a review of the membership study guide under the guidance of Nita Harding, Chair, Subject Standards Committee. Thanks also to SSC members Rosemary Elliott

and Tanya Stephens for contribution in the review process. Animal welfare is an evolving and challenging discipline and so the new guide will be an important step towards preparing future candidates for their animal welfare journey throughout their careers. Next membership examinations will be held in 2024.

BENCHMARKING SURVEY ON THE 3RS IN RESEARCH AND TEACHING

An invitation is extended to those involved in research and teaching with animal industry in the last 24 months as either an academic, AEC member, animal care staff/manager, ethics adminstrator/manager, or veterinarian/AWO (18+yrs) to complete a benchmarking survey (~15 min). The results will be used to develop and advance application of the 3Rs, animal welfare and research/teaching outcomes.

Participants are asked to answer questions as best as possible if unsure of any answers and can enter the draw for a $75.00 voucher.

you are at it. Journal Club is open to all MMLA members and colleagues who have submitted an EOI with the College to complete the MMLA exams in the future. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for February 2023, and we invite you to join us for some fun and robust discussions.

The Chapter Executive has met four times since July and has been planning for Science Week 2023. Dr Mandy Errington has been exploring options and opportunities. We hope to pull together an excellent program consisting of a themed pre-conference workshop, lectures from members and guest speakers, and a day partnership with the Animal Welfare Chapter.

Special thanks go out to Dr Yvette Ellen and Dr Jenny Kingham for assisting with Science Week development. Science Week 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting learning and networking opportunity. We encourage all members to come to the Gold Coast (26th - 28th July) and join the MMLA Chapter’s in-person-only event.

Lastly, the Chapter has been involved in discussions regarding the October release of the report from the NSW inquiry into the use of primates and other animals in medical research (link here). The report (link here) included two recommendations that directly involve a “qualified” veterinarian. The MMLA Chapter is working with the Australia New Zealand Laboratory Animal Association (ANZLAA) and the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) to begin discussions on what this might look like. Additional discussions will take place in the coming year, which may include other Chapters within ANZCVS so stay tuned for further updates.

Have a safe holiday season and a fantastic start to the new year! 2023 is looking to be a great year, and it is exciting to see us all come together after several years of COVID isolation. Take care, everyone!

Cheers,

SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE CHAPTER

The end of 2022 is fast approaching, and Christmas is on our doorstep. From all of us on the executive committee we wish all our members a safe a happy holiday, I know it’s been a big year for many and a well deserved break is needed. A few exciting things ahead for the chapter:

• Our examination teams are filled once again. Thanks so much for everyone giving up their times in these roles. We also wish all the candidates for 2023 all the best as they start the long and grueling study preparation.

• The Chapter is excited to announce two scholarship grants for 2023. The grants will be offered to a member of the college not in a training program

and another within a training program (residency). Each grant offers up to $3000 to assist with accommodation, flights etc. to engage our members in national and international conferences. We hope this can be a great opportunity for those awarded. Keep your eyes peeled for emails regarding these applications soon.

• Science week preparation is underway and we look forward to some very exciting speakers and activities. We are hoping this will be the biggest science week the Chapter has ever presented. Thanks again to the committee for all their hard work on this!

As always, my friends, have fun, keep learning, and reach out if you need anything. Merry Christmas to you all and see you in the new year!

I will not be continuing on as Chapter President due to ill health however Dr Abbie Tipler has indicated she would stand for the role.

If anyone else is interested in any positions within the Chapter Executive please contact me.

Again I urge all new and current Members to be active within your Chapter:

• Volunteer to be an examiner

• Volunteer to be a committee member

• Help with Science Week – as a speaker or session chair

If you would like to be involved, please do not hesitate to contact me: paemoses@hotmail.com

On a personal note I am retiring from clinical practice at the end of November 2022 due to my health, I wish to thank all Chapter Members for their support and friendship over my career.

Regards Philip Moses, Chapter President

Submission to the Independent Review of Veterinary Education in Australasia:

The Behaviour Chapter has made a submission to the Independent Review of Veterinary Education in Australasia. We have brought to the attention of the panel how important education in Veterinary Behaviour and Psychiatry is and that improvements in veterinary undergraduate courses need to be made in order for this to be addressed.

VETERINARY PRACTICE

SMALL ANIMAL

Our chapter is growing - we’ve welcomed new members from our latest examinations (as well as eager members of other chapters), celebrated our inaugural Science Week attendance, and are now planning for 2023!

Science Week 2022 brought a fantastic line up of topics and speakers about the growing issues that brachycephalics are bringing to Veterinary Practice. It has been exciting to see our members enthused by Science Week and showing off new surgical adventures in our Chapter group.

Special thanks are extended to our outgoing Science Week convenor, Philip Moses, and a big welcome to Ange Hodgson for taking on this role

for 2023. As a fledgling chapter, we are trying to start the chapter with the vision of how we want it to prosper.

We are planning a program in conjunction with the Rehabilitation Chapter on the topic of Osteoarthritis in Small Animals. Book your CPD leave now! With enhanced vet care, this is another aspect of practice that is rapidly expanding. The chapter has been generously sponsored by Royal Canin and we are grateful for their continued support for 2023.

Our examinations are shaping up for more new members in 2023, with nine eager candidates keen to join our ranks. Our examination team met to start preparing in earnest for our next examination period in 2023.

We’re a collaborative bunch, just like we are in practice. If you’ve got an idea or feedback, please reach out!
