At a time when there is every temptation to halt life plans, to think that it is all too hard, it is more important than ever to keep checking in with ourselves to remember our ‘why’. This may be on a personal level. It may be in your role as a veterinarian, whatever that may look like. It certainly also applies to our College.

It has continued to move forward and remain true to its purpose. The 2021 delivery of examinations was unlike any previous year. Written exams were held in dispersed locations across Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, UAE, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Oral examinations were held via video conferencing, with the candidate, examiners and observers all in attendance. Fellowship

oral examinations were held in a similar format, with the exception that the observer and the candidate were at the same venue. Despite the everchanging landscape of COVID outbreaks, the office staff and Board of Examiners were able to provide a full examination service in 42 subjects to 445 candidates. The Chief Examiner, Dr Peter Bennett can hopefully take pride in what he, his Board of Examiners, and the office staff have achieved this year.

clients and all animal species benefits from this collective knowledge as it continues to be disseminated. College Science Week also looked different this year, with a last minute Covid challenge posed. Our planned (and much anticipated) in-person gathering at The Star, Gold Coast, was transitioned to an all online event. Preplanning for such an outcome meant that there appeared to be an almost seamless transfer of session delivery. Speakers had been requested to prerecord their presentations to allow for this eventuality. The presentations have been well received and of high quality, covering a breadth of topics relevant to all members of our College. This year, there was the addition of a College Stream of talks, which covered topics of interest to many. These presentations are available for viewing until 18 October, so I encourage you to register to watch and learn from our community. How will the next 12 months look? It would be a brave person to believe they can predict this with any certainty. However, I am certain that the College will continue to keep moving forward. Earlier this year, a review of our examination process was commissioned. You cannot improve on what is not measured. The reviewers were in agreement that the Board of Examiners provide a rigorous examination service. However, there were numerous recommendations posed which an Examination Review Committee is working through currently. Some changes are minor, but some would lead to a significantly different ‘look’ to the current examinations. Such changes need to be carefully thought through, and relevant stakeholders consulted with, to ensure changes will result in a superior product. Importantly, the delivery of examinations needs to be sustainable. This will be a primary focus when implementing changes.

As always, I wish to acknowledge and thank our our diligent and competent office team: Dr Mary Anne Hiscutt as College Manager, Sharon Tinsley as Assistant Office Manager, Robyn Pettigrew as Examinations Officer, Jill Meatheringham and Jennifer Gleeson as Assistant Examinations Officers, and Dr Rachel Tan as Project Officer. Stephen Alderman has led the team as the CEO for the last 18 months and provided Council the ability to step away from the day-today management, to focus on making decisions on where the College should be 3-5 years from now. I also wish to congratulate and welcome Dr Glenn Edwards to the Council, joining myself, Zoe Lenard, David Tabrett, Allan Bryce, Charlotte Cantley and Peter Bennett (Chief Examiner). Dr Bruce Smith has finished his second 3-year term on Council, and I again wish to thank him for the significant contribution he has made to the ANZCVS during his 6 years on Council. Bruce will remain on the Finance and Risk Committee in the College member position for the coming 12 months. His continued input toward the financial management of the College is sincerely welcomed. Finally, as I come in as the 35th President of the Council of the ANZCVS, I wish to acknowledge the immediate Past President, Dr Zoe Lenard. Zoe led Council through three of the most challenging of the College’s 50 years. She nominated for Council five years ago with a vision to shift Council (the board of directors) from being operational, to having a more strategic focus, recognising the continued growth of the organisation, and the continual increase in work required to operate the College. She has achieved this goal and it has been inspiring for me to observe her constant quest for innovation. They are big shoes to fill, but I will try!

Although delivery takes place in mere days, members commit thousands of hours before and after to help ensure the high standard you have set is upheld regardless of the obstacles put in our path.

As one cycle finishes, another begins, examination applications are open and the SSC and SEC committees will now start developing their 2022 examinations. At the same time, all the Science Week convenors will begin plans for their workshops, sessions and speakers for 2022. Members continue to make these commitments even while a large percentage of you throughout Australia

and New Zealand contend with restrictions affecting families and daily activities. As we change our focus to the year ahead, we are closing in on the November 2021 Online Examiners Workshop, which is shaping up to be the biggest one yet. I hope for the next edition that the frustration of restrictions are all but over for you, and our plans can offer a greater level of certainty.

EXAMINATIONS REPORT Dr Peter Bennett, Chief Examiner

As you are all aware 2021 has not been the return to a more normal situation that was hoped for earlier in the year. For everyone the year continues to throw repeated and new challenges at us all. I would like to congratulate the successful candidates at Membership and Fellowship. The work of all the volunteers who assisted the Board in providing examinations in difficult circumstances reflects their goodwill and support of the College, ably supported by the staff in the College office. There have been changes in the membership of the Board with Drs Sharanne Raidal, Kath Briscoe, Petra Muellner and Dave Collins stepping down from their roles. The Board has been appreciative of the time and effort they have invested in supporting the examination process of the College. Dr Yenny Indrawirawan joined as a temporary member to

cover Dr Muellner who had external commitments, has now become a fulltime member. We have three new members joining us, Drs Liz Tee, Jana Leshinsky and Rena MacFarlane. It seems a very short time since the 2021 examination period ended and the Board is now beginning the planning and implementation of the examination process for 2022. The office and Board have learnt a lot over the past two examination periods that will be used to develop further the processes for 2022. We are all reviewing the areas that had the most problems or impact and are discussing steps to reduce the risk of a recurrence, or to minimise their effects. With the support of Council, the College and Board are planning to administer the examinations in a COVID-safe manner for all involved in 2022.

While the examinations are a major focus of the Board, the other tasks of the Board continue with review of Fellowship training programs, annual reports, and credentials, not forgetting the task of reviewing subject guidelines across Membership and Fellowship. I would like to thank the Council for their support of the Board, the continued hard work of the staff in the office and the members of the Board. I would like to note that Dr Jen Carter has stepped into the role of Assistant Chief Examiner – Examinations and Dr Linda Abraham into the role of Assistant Chief Examiner – Training and credentials.

UPDATE PROJECT OFFICER Dr Rachel Tan, Project Officer The College would like to thank its Members for supporting the 2021 Science Week Virtual Conference. Despite the challenges of the COVID19 pandemic, our event platform had the capability to rapidly transition to this 100% virtual event. 12 Chapters presented a program this year with 161 speakers delivering 184 presentations. In addition, a College Stream was added throughout the Science Week Program to provide multi-disciplinary content applicable to advanced practitioners across all Chapters. College Stream lectures included topics on wellness, medicine, surgery, critical care and anaesthesia. Registration for Science Week 2021 is still available with access to on-demand content available until the 18th of October 2021. Check out the top three viewed presentations before the event ends! 1. MAINTENANCE OF CREDENTIALS (MOC) Maintenance of Credentials (MOC) requirements commenced after the July 2021 examination period. This has been delayed by one year due to the worldwide impact of the COVID pandemic. The MOC requirements will apply to all Members and Fellows who are awarded their qualifications from 2021 onwards. Existing Members may choose to participate in MOC on a voluntary basis. Compulsory MOC will be introduced for all Fellows from 2023, including retrospective inclusion. MOC requirements consist of a designated number of hours per fiveyear period which can be achieved through relevant practice in the discipline, ongoing learning, and active involvement in the College. Complete information about MOC requirements can be found at Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (anzcvs.org.au). For those of you who registered for Science Week this year or the College/Chapter AGM – congratulations – you have already fulfilled category three requirements for this five-year period! NEW COUNCILLOR WELCOME NEW COUNCILLOR DR GLENN EDWARDS This year we farewelled Dr Bruce Smith as he stepped down from Council after serving the College diligently as Honorary Treasurer. Dr Glenn Edwards joins Council as the newest member. Glenn joined the College in 1986, and has held a number of positions within the Surgery Chapter including President (1996/7 and 2011/12), Secretary (2009/10), and Membership examiner on 9 occasions from 1992-2005. Glenn has worked in general practice and at the University of Melbourne and most recently Charles Sturt University, where he was appointed Head of the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in 2016 until retiring from academia in 2018.

Glenn’s main area of interest is soft tissue surgery, and he has had an active career in research developing a variety of cardiovascular devices. He has co-authored a large number of papers in both veterinary and medical journals, and presented to numerous veterinary and biomaterial conferences both within Australia and internationally. He was awarded the ASAVA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 2011, and was the recipient of the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement in 2012. Glenn was also a content author and tutor for the Surgery Course for the Centre for Veterinary Education from 1996 to 2011, and received the TG Hungerford Award for Excellence in Post Graduate Education in 2006.

With a strong desire to contribute more to the veterinary profession as a whole, Glenn became a member of the College Finance and Risk Committee, and more recently joined the College Council in 2021.

NEW CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENT ANZCVS is pleased to announce its newest Chapter – Veterinary Practice Small Animal. The Chapter has been approved by College Council and looks forward to participating in Science Week in 2022. The new Chapter now has seven Members by examination. The College Council congratulates the inaugural Chapter President Dr Georgia Ladmore and all the new Chapter executive and members. The Chapter will have Membership only at this time and will next hold examinations in 2022. The College gratefully acknowledges the efforts of former College President Adjunct Professor Philip Moses as well as College Staff in the development of the new Chapter. THE DAVE HANLON MEMORIAL TRAINING TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP The Dave Hanlon Memorial Training Travel Scholarship was created to support veterinarians preparing to sit their College Membership or Fellowship exams in Animal Reproduction. It commemorates Dave Hanlon who passed away in January 2020; Dave was a great mentor and supported many fellow veterinarians professionally and through the College. The Animal Reproduction Chapter welcomes and encourages donations from anyone to this worthwhile cause.

career. Michelle Dicken was the final speaker, and she shared her pathway from equine medicine membership to fellowship. Michelle then discussed the value of fellowship and how it helped open many doors in her career.

There was plenty of time for a good chat with old and new friends and colleagues before everyone headed off for the start of the conference program at 8am. It was a very successful and enjoyable morning.

The NZ network committee was delighted to hold an early morning gathering over coffee and a croissant before the start of lectures at the NZVA conference in Christchurch themed “We are Stronger together” on 23rd June 2021. The conference venue was the awesome Wigram air force museum and the program featured equine, sheep and beef cattle and veterinary business streams and was the 1st face to face veterinary conference in NZ since COVID so there was much excitement about being together in person. There was a great turn out of approximately 25 ANZCVS members plus several non-members who were interested in understanding more about the benefits of college membership. The morning kicked off at 7.15am with a couple of very short informal talks from the NZ network committee members. Lotte Cantley welcomed everyone and briefly outlined the purpose of the NZ network which is to “Promote greater awareness of the College to the wider veterinary profession and provide a sense of community and belonging to NZ college members”. Janine Van Dam went on to summarise how her dentistry membership had help develop her dentistry business and

Fiona trained as a doctor in the UK and went on to work as a GP in Britain and New Zealand. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland where she specialises in student and practitioner wellbeing, workplace wellness, mental health and communication skills. She is Chair of the Pastoral Care Committee for the Medical Programme and lead for The Health and Wellbeing curriculum at the medical school in Auckland. As a partner in Connect Communications, an education business teaching self-care, stress management, burnout prevention, supervision skills and communication skills, she is involved in teaching medical professionals around the country.

They have contributed to the veterinary profession’s issue on mental health and wellbeing in several different ways in collaboration with the ANZCVS, VCNZ and NZVA over the last few years. They have provided face to face presentations, webinar series, Balint groups (a group method of training doctors and veterinarians in the doctor/veterinarian -patient relationship, developed by Michael Balint in 1945.) and, in 2019, a peer reviewed NZVJ paper “Current

Renske graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1990 and has spent most of her medical career in general practice. Renske’s Diploma in Counselling using the Psychosynthesis model supports her work as a Counsellor and MindBody therapist in her private practice and she is an accredited Balint group leader. She is also a partner in Connect Communications.

They have recently assisted with the development of the NZ Veterinary Teams Wellbeing Framework. This presentation builds on some of the work that has been done in the veterinary wellbeing space, drawing out some key points, and looks at were to from here.

And we had over 70 registrations, which is very pleasing given this was our first online seminar. We also thank the Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and the Laboratory Animal Management and Medicine Chapters who co-hosted two more days of interesting and informative presentations. VETERINARY DENTISTRY CHAPTER

It has been a relatively quiet year for the Dental Chapter. Covid continues to change the landscape, making planning difficult, and running in-person events even more difficult. The decision not to run a dental stream at the 2021 Science week for the second year in a row disappointed many, but understandably as veterinarians are put under more stress and everyone is endeavouring to stay safe in their communities, this was a sensible decision. The Dental Chapter of ANZCVS is small, but mighty and inclusive. We are big enough to support our membership, yet small enough that most members know each other, and this will improve even more when we get back to a relatively ‘normal’ life post-covid, whatever that looks like.

AVIAN MEDICINE AND SURGERY CHAPTER The Avian Chapter has been busy this most recent lockdown, organising ourselves for the upcoming AGM, and completing the examinations process for the Membership and Fellowship examinations. The examinations process was made more difficult this year because of the restrictions to travel and the ongoing difficulty with COVID-19, however, our examiners and SEC and SCC members did a great job of delivering robust but fair examinations given the circumstances. A huge thank you to Rena, Liam, Daniella, Deb, Shane and Melinda for all your efforts over the last year to get the exams prepared and delivered under difficult circumstances. With the examinations the Chapter welcomes our newest Fellow, Dr Alexandr Mastakov from The University of Queensland. Alex graduated from James Cook University and worked in veterinary mixed practices in Nanango and Bundaberg where he established avian and exotics services. He then moved to Sugarloaf Animal Hospital before taking up a role at The University of Queensland as a resident in Avian Medicine and Surgery whilst undertaking a Doctor of Veterinary Clinical Science. He completed his Master of Veterinary Medicine Degree

Alex trained under Dr Bob Doneley for the last four years and has completed numerous publications as part of his DVetClinSci evaluating the efficacy and safety of Alfaxalone in chickens. He has presented at many national conferences during his residency and credentialed for his fellowship examinations in October 2020. We warmly welcome Alex as our newest Fellow and congratulate him on many years of hard work in making his dream a reality – congratulations Alex, you should be very proud!

This will help our examiners to create robust and fair questions for our Membership and Fellowship examinations and will mean that we have questions from all walks of avian practice – allowing for a complete evaluation of our candidates. We will present this information at this year’s AGM which we are going to run via Zoom this year with dates and times to be advised shortly.

MEDICINE AND MANAGEMENT OF LABORATORY ANIMALS CHAPTER Congratulation to Dr A. Rowe and Dr E. Barrick who successfully completed their examination in Medicine and Management of Laboratory Animals. This was a delayed examination from 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis interruptions. Examinations will be held again in 2022. In lieu of face to face attendance, the MMLA contribution to Science Week was a two-day seminar held 22-23 July. The seminars were held on-line

and in collaboration with Veterinary Anaesthesia and Animal Welfare. Both days were well attended. Special thanks to Dr Musk for organizing the program and speakers. Thanks were also conveyed to Dr Pethick for organizing commercial sponsorship for Science Week (ABR, Abel Scientific, Biological Associates, Chemical Essentials and Specialty Feeds). Thanks to the speakers whose contributions added to the success of the seminars. The journal club has commenced since the last AGM and has been well received. Networking and problem solving are also benefits of this new initiative. Two meetings had been held up to July 2021 and a further two are scheduled for the remainder of the year. (August 27 and October 15). Thanks to all executive and nonexecutive members for their work behind the scenes during 2020 and into 2021 (Dr Vaughan, Treasurer; Dr Ferguson President, Dr Ellen, Secretary; Dr Kingham, Head Subject Examiner; Dr Vilaflor Examiner, Dr Musk, Science Week Coordinator and member of SSC, Dr Dodemaide Chair SSC; Dr Inns, Web Coordinator. The AGM was held on 23 July 2021. At this meeting Julie Ferguson retired from President and Lewis Vaughan was appointed to this role. Lewis retired from Treasurer and Julie agreed to fill the role as no other nominations were received. Yvette Ellen remained in the position of Secretary. Lydia Pethick retired from the position of Executive Committee member – this position remains open.

VETERINARY SPORTS MEDICINE & REHABILITATION CHAPTER In this issue of the College Courier, I would like to thank the inaugural Chapter Executive, including the Subject Standards Committee and Science Week Convening teams, for all their hard work and dedication to establishing this chapter in our first

official year in order to achieve our current standing: • Our Subject Standards have been submitted to the Board of Examiners for final review and at our second AGM in August, a Subject Exams Committee was formed and are still on target for running our first VSMR – Canine exams in 2022, and VSMR – Equine exams in 2023. • Our Science Week 2021 Conference Stream was well received, and attended not only by chapter members, but also by a significant number of people from outside our chapter. Further, there was a significant level of interest from rehab practitioners working overseas which has given us cause to consider how best to provide access to our lecture series internationally moving forward. We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to view our speakers’ talks and welcome any discussions to collaborate further both inside the workplace and in organising speakers for next year’s College Science Week. The inaugural Chapter Executive have agreed to continue on for their second year, and I am very grateful for this. I look forward to what we can achieve this year! EPIDEMIOLOGY CHAPTER This year, once again, has been unusual and a challenging year for many and we would like to thank all the Chapter members who have contributed their time over the last 12 months. The 2021 AGM was held via zoom Thursday 29 July and was started with a presentation by Paul Bingham titled Sailing the epidemic curve – lost sailors and tropical islands. We thank everyone that held roles as executive committee members, convenor team members, and coordinators that made 2020-21 a success.

We would also like to thank Petra Muellner, Emilie Vallee, and Jill Milan who have contributed to the Chapter for many years. The International Symposium on Veterinary Epidemiology and Economy (ISVEE) team has been progressing the 2024 meeting and both the Subject Examination Committee and Subject Standards Committee have been reviewing the membership and fellowship guidelines. We would like to thank the 2021 examiners, Brendan Cowled, Simon Firestone, Rachel Iglesias, Annette O’Connor, Jenny-Ann Toribio, Michael Ward, and Anke Wiethoelter. EQUINE CHAPTER We continue to face the challenges of ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks and restrictions and we thank all our members for their understanding and continued support during these unprecedented times. Membership and Fellowship exams were successfully delivered in an online format and we sincerely thank all

Chapters continued the examiners for their hard work in the months leading up to the examinations and during exam delivery. We would also like to thank Professor Sharanne Raidal (Charles Sturt University) who organised weekly online meetings for membership candidates to provide support and guidance in the leadup to the examinations. These sessions were well attended and allowed candidates to discuss various topics as well as share tips relating to exam preparation and exam technique. We are pleased to welcome 16 new members to the Equine Chapter. Congratulations to the four candidates who passed the Equine Medicine examinations, two candidates who passed the Equine Surgery examinations and 10 candidates who passed the Veterinary Practice (Equine) examinations. We are also very excited to announce that two candidates successfully passed their fellowship examinations – Dr Danielle Crosby (Equine Surgery) and Dr Cristina Rosales (Equine Medicine). We acknowledge the dedication and commitment required to progress through specialty training and the many demands associated with these programmes and the fellowship examination process. We encourage all new members and fellows to be involved with the Equine Chapter and hope that we may all be able to see each other in person at Science Week 2022. The online Equine Chapter programme for Science Week 2021 was also a success. We thank our international speakers, Eric Parente and Louise Southwood from the University of Pennsylvania USA for their fantastic lectures. There was also a live Q&A session during which time both speakers were able to interact with online attendees. This was a wonderful opportunity to discuss topics presented in their lectures in more depth and allowed a slightly more personal

forum which isn’t always possible with online delivery! Registrations are still open with on demand access to all 12 Chapter Streams offered during Science Week 2021 available until October 5. We encourage members who have not registered to register now! Topics presented in the Equine Chapter programme include advances in diagnosis and treatment of colic, antimicrobial stewardship and surgical colic & GIT microbiome, upper and lower respiratory tract, persistent nasal discharge, upper respiratory tract surgery. Additional equine content is also available in the Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Chapter programme with lectures on ultrasound of multifidus muscles in horses and physiotherapy assessment and treatment of the sacroiliac joint.

Plans are underway for an exciting Equine Chapter programme for Science Week 2022! We hope to include some of our excellent local speakers who were originally scheduled to speak in 2021 and we welcome any suggestions for topics from members. We appreciate your patience as we navigate through the uncertain times that we continue to face and we are hopeful that we can all meet in person again for Science Week 2022 on the Gold Coast. The Equine Chapter AGM will be held online via Zoom on September 9 at 7pm. Please check your emails for details and we hope to see you all there! FELINE CHAPTER Another three months rolls by in unprecedented times. Although things looked hopeful we would have a “in person” science week – it was not to be. We hope you all managed to enjoy some virtual lectures and thanks to science week convenor Chantal Celindano for stepping up with the organising. It’s time to give a big thank you to Katherine Briscoe for doing such a wonderful job as president of the Feline Chapter over the last seven years (!). Kath has steered the chapter through truly unexpected times and as with many voluntary positions, the amount of work often goes unrecognized by most (except those that have done it before themselves!). Kath has worked tirelessly to continue the examination process through very foggy waters and is due a well-earned rest. We hope she continues to provide guidance to the chapter in the future. As the speciality of feline medicine grows in recognition and popularity, the Feline Chapter has the potential to develop as a hub to share knowledge, experience and generate inspiration both in Australia and overseas. This last year has seen the Covid pandemic wreak havoc for many vets, who are juggling to maintain families and busy work lives in unprecedented times. It

is important to find ways to improve work-life balance whilst continuing the passion for our profession and knowledge sharing in all the new ways. As incoming president I would love to hear from ANYONE that has thoughts on what they might find helpful and what the Feline Chapter could do for them. With the changes in roles in the chapter executives, we are looking for a new treasurer. If you are interested please contact the chapter executives, in particular Rachel Korman who will be happy to walk you through what the role would entail. The Ophthalmology Executive Committee would like to welcome Dr Matt Sanders to the post of Chapter Secretary alongside Dr Hayley Volk. Dr Jeff Smith and Dr James White will be continuing in their roles as President and Treasurer, respectively. Special thanks to Dr Tony Read, Dr Robin Stanley and Dr Johana Premont for stepping up to take over the Subject Examination Committee. Our future candidates are lucky to have your expertise. We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution of Dr Martyn King and Dr Simon Hurn, both of whom have examined all of the Fellowship candidates since 2012 and have retired from the SEC this year. Your time, effort and generosity is exceptional and the Chapter owe you a mountain of gratitude! After the unpredictable year we have all had, the Ophthalmology Chapter hope to see everyone in person at Science Week 2022. PATHOBIOLOGY CHAPTER The 2020 Membership exams were delayed until 2021 and are due to be held again in 2022. On behalf of the whole Pathobiology Chapter, I extend congratulations to our 10 new Members; well done in extremely challenging times. Thank you to the other examiners (John, Helen and Patrick), speaking from my personal experience, it was a tough gig this year, all the work in addition/around a full time job, with none of the collegiate fun and better weather/views of meeting up on the Gold Coast. Special thanks must be given to Christina McGowan as

Chapters continued A successful mentorship program was run in the couple of months before the exam, and I‘d particularly like to thank John Carr and all other mentors for their substantial contributions to these sessions. From a small base our membership is gradually growing, and we’d like to welcome three new members by examination to the Chapter: Hugo Dunlop, Bernie Gleeson and Jon Bartsch. I am sure that they will all make valuable contributions to the chapter for many years into the future.

College liaison and John Munday as head examiner whose large time contributions to reorganising the exams kept us on track for the new dates. Moving to a digital format for the microscope slides was not without challenges and would not have been possible without examiner Patrick Shearer’s IT savvy in generous collaboration with Natalie Courtman from the University of Melbourne to allow us to scan and access slide cases on the BEST network. Conducting zoom orals was an interesting experience, well done to all the candidates who seemed to adapt very well. We are keen to keep improving the examinations, will continue to increase the digital slide availability and quality, and are exploring more options for access/ storage as well as considering if anatomical and clinical pathology streams would be of greater relevance to future candidates. Unfortunately, with the pandemic situation and remote examinations, the Pathobiology chapter did not have a presence at Science Week 2021, but we look forward to collaborating with other chapters and encourage pathology presentations into allied chapters at Science week 2022. Our AGM is scheduled for an online meeting, Monday 11th of October at 1pm EDST

PIG HEALTH AND PRODUCTION CHAPTER I’m pleased to report that the past year for the Pig Health and Production Chapter has been a busy and successful one. We were very pleased to welcome six candidates for the inaugural examination in the subject, and I’d like to commend all candidates for their hard work and dedication in preparing for this event. Despite some last minute glitches due to lockdowns, all candidates across two countries and four time zones were able to complete the exam. My thanks goes to the Examination committee, led by Trish Holyoake, for achieving the difficult task of preparing and successfully delivering this exam, particularly the oral exams which were done via video link.

Finally, I’d like to announce that the AGM of the chapter will be held on Friday October 1st at 2pm NSW time. Elections for positions on the Executive will be held, so please send nominations to me prior to the meeting. Rowan Wilson - President Alan Sharrock – Secretary/Treasurer

SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE CHAPTER In the last quarter, there have been several activities for our chapter. We had completion of the membership and fellowship 2021 exams, enjoyment of the SAM CSW online sessions and our chapter AGM. It has been a very engaging period of time with our members centred around those activities and also planning for the next 12 months. A very big congratulations to our new Members and Fellows. Such a massive achievement in a year yet again affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. We would like to acknowledge and thank Drs White (HSE), Stickney (SEC Chair), Whitney, Chow, Roberts, Wolfenden, Shipman, Brough, Ciaravolo, Coulter, Jarrett, Evans, Leshinsky and Smither for their work and efforts in preparation and execution of the 2021 Membership Examination. Our Fellowship examination group was led by Dr Cattin (HSE), with Dr Swinney (Chair), Sharman, Idowu, and Fluen, along with a group of silent

examiners that contributed to the examinations. The examination team for this group came together under substantial time pressure and as with both examination groups, if we don’t have dedicated volunteers, then the examinations cannot go ahead so thank you again for your willingness to pay it forward. It is pleasing to have our 2022 Fellowship and Membership examination groups coming together so quickly after the AGM with these details being finalised at time of writing this Courier contribution. Face-to-face attendance at College Science Week 2021 was again cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the careful preparation by the Science Week Convenors and College support, they were able to deliver the presentations virtually and seamlessly, inclusive of the Abstract Presentations. Thank you to all those involved in delivering and preparing the lecture series this year. Drs Fleeman, van Gelderen and Thompson managed to handle an ever-changing landscape for the benefit of all of us – well done! Dr Fleeman will not be continuing in this role after her long service, and we therefore require volunteers for 2022 CSW. Dr van Gelderen will stay on for as long as she can to assist, however may be relocating out of the country. We therefore require at least TWO volunteers please… URGENTLY! Thank you to our Subject Standards Committee (Chair: Dr Sophie Haynes Members: Drs Nathalee Prakash, Amanda Paul and Sonya El-Chami) who will have a big couple of years moving forward with SAM Membership full review due in 2022 and Fellowship in 2023. Additional volunteers for this group will be requested at the next AGM. At and since our 2021 AGM there has been movement of Chapter Executive positions: • President: I will remain in this position for one more year

SURGERY CHAPTER 2021 has proven as unpredictable as 2020 as far as Covid is concerned. The resident’s forum was held in Brisbane in February with high Zoom attendance around the country, and only the QLD contingent appearing in person. The event was certainly very informative and enjoyed by those attending. This allows interaction with all residents around Australia, and a very important and worthwhile process. The College bravely attempted an in-person Science Week of which the Surgery Chapter decided not to participate due to the inability for any interstate speakers or attendees

to commit. Unfortunately, this was cancelled as we are all aware, due to covid restrictions. Exams did go ahead, with the poor Victorians in lockdown conditions. This was a huge undertaking by the College, Chapter and examinees in trying circumstances. The Surgery Chapter proudly admits two new Fellows in James King and Nick Cleland, and 57 new surgical Members! The abstract forum was completed on 12th August, with 42 attendees and nine very high-quality Resident/intern abstracts presented. Even a little lively interaction led by Arthur House and aptly defended by Lincoln Chau! Obviously, no one can predict what will happen regarding in person conferences for 2022 but we hope to have some presence at the Gold Coast next year! NEW FELLOWS CRISTINA ROSALES (EQUINE MEDICINE) Cristina graduated in 2011 from the University of Melbourne and commenced an internship at Ballarat Veterinary Practice. Following this she worked as a medicine registrar at the Veterinary Clinical Centre, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. She subsequently undertook an equine medicine residency at the U-Vet Equine Centre, Werribee where she completed a Masters of Veterinary Studies and a Masters of Veterinary Science, which involved a research project investigating inflammatory pathways involved in placental detachment in the mare. Cristina was awarded Memberships in Equine Medicine in 2015. Since completing her residency Cristina has worked in both private and referral practice in the UK and Australia.

NICK CLELAND (SMALL ANIMAL SURGERY) Nick graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Sydney. He completed a 12-month rotating internship at Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) in 2009 followed by 6 years in general practice in Australia and the UK before returning to VSS in 2016 to complete a Residency in Small Animal Surgery.

PATRICIA NEWTON (SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE)

Patricia graduated from the University of Queensland in 1999 and spent the first part of her career in general practice in Alice Springs and Townsville. While in general practice, she achieved membership in Small Animal Medicine, and realised she was never truly leaving study behind. She worked at JCU VECH for 3 years, before moving to Brisbane to pursue a residency with Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre between 2015 and 2017, supervised by Dr Darren Fry. Her interest in oncology and imaging aspects of medicine were cemented during this time, and in 2020 she joined Queensland Veterinary Specialists as a registrar. The seeds for Fellowship were first planted as a student when Patricia came across “The Blue Book”. The idea never left, even if it was set aside for life events for a while. She is looking forward to being able to spend more time with her son and husband, holidays that don’t involve flashcards or study notes, and supporting other Fellowship candidates through the process. Favourite thing about being a Fellow: Being part of a group that strives for excellence every day. Favourite thing about studying for Fellows: Passing. Time with my dogs and enduring the disdain of my cats for daring to be home during daylight hours. Advice for those preparing to sit: Study for the questions, work on answer structure, have a plan to stay mentally robust.

MATT SANDERS (VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGY) Matt graduated in 2003 from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with honours. He worked in small animal practice in Australia and the United Kingdom, and completed the University of Sydney Distance Education course in Ophthalmology 2006. He commenced a residency in ophthalmology at Animal Eye Care in Melbourne in 2016, and in 2017 he achieved membership to the Small Animal Surgery Chapter of the ANZCVS. He obtained ANZCVS fellowship in Ophthalmology in 2021.

DANIELLE CROSBY (EQUINE SURGERY) Danielle graduated in 2010 from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. Initially she worked in mixed animal practice. In 2015 she completed an equine internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital. Subsequent to this she undertook an equine surgery residency at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. During this time she also attained the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Studies (2020). Danielle achieved membership to the Equine Chapter (surgery of horses) of the ANZCVS in 2018. In 2021 she achieved fellowship to the Equine Chapter (equine surgery) of the ANZCVS.

NICOLE TRIGG (VETERINARY EMERGENCY MEDICINE AND CRITICAL CARE) Nicole graduated in 2005 from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. In 2006, she completed an internship in emergency and critical care at Animal Accident and Emergency in Melbourne. After achieving membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in emergency and critical care in 2010, Nicole commenced her residency in emergency and critical care at Animal Accident and Emergency. She then worked in the Pet Intensive Care Unit at Veterinary Specialist Services/Animal Emergency Service in Brisbane in 2016-2017, before returning to Melbourne to work as a Senior Registrar in emergency and critical care at the Animal Referral Hospital. Nicole achieved Fellowship in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care in 2021 and is now looking forward to life after study with her husband and furry family.

ROB TURNER (VETERINARY RADIOLOGY) Rob Turner graduated in 2009 from Massey University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Initially, he worked in shelter medicine, followed by exotic and small animal practice. Rob achieved membership to the Veterinary Radiology Chapter (Small Animal) of the ANZCVS in 2015. Subsequent to this he undertook a residency in Veterinary Radiology at the University of Melbourne.

LUKE JOHNSTON (SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE) Luke Johnston graduated in 2015 from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. He then moved into a rotating internship program for 6months at Veterinary Specialist Services, Carrara before heading to the United States for an internship at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists. He successfully completed his membership exam in 2018 in Small Animal Internal Medicine. In 2019 he completed his residency in small animal internal medicine at VSS Carrara and has worked at Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) on the Central Coast since. Indeed, the fellowship experience for Luke has been a challenging experience as it is for many candidates each year. Luke would like to thank his friends, family, partner and mentors for their support, time and effort in helping him to achieve this milestone. He is looking forward to the contribution he can make to the College in improving the process of residency training and examination for all candidates.

ALISON JUKES (FELINE MEDICINE) Alison graduated in 2006 from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, first class honours. Her first foray into clinical practice was completing a rotating internship in emergency practice and small animal medicine and surgery at Pet Emergency and Queensland Veterinary Specialist. This was followed by a year at Dermcare working in dermatology practice and running clinical trials. In 2009 she found her calling working in feline only practice at The Cat Clinic in Brisbane. Alison started her residency and achieved membership to the Feline Chapter of the ANZCVS in 2010. Alison attained her fellowship in Feline Medicine in 2021 but this achievement was not possible without the amazing support of her family.

JAMES KING (SMALL ANIMAL SURGERY) James King graduated in 2013 from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, first class honours. Initially James worked as a rotating intern with Veterinary Specialist Services at Carrara, and then worked in both emergency and critical care and as a locum in general practice in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. James achieved membership to the Small Animal Surgery Chapter of the ANZCVS in 2017 and returned to Veterinary Specialist Services Carrara and completed his small animal surgery residency. James loves his life on the Gold Coast with his wife, daughter and dogs.

ALEXANDR MASTAKOV (AVIAN MEDICINE AND SURGERY) Alex graduated from James Cook University in 2013 and worked in a variety of veterinary practices in QLD and NSW (mixed, small animal and avian/exotic). After which he relocated to Gatton to undertake an avian medicine and surgery residency and doctor of veterinary clinic science post graduate degree at the University of Queensland in 2018 under Dr Bob Doneley. He has completed an externship in avian medicine and surgery at the Abu Dhabi Falcon hospital and a Master of Veterinary Medicine Degree through Massey university. He attained membership in the Avian Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018 and completed his residency in Avian Medicine and Surgery and successfully passed his fellowship examinations in 2021. Alex has a keen interest in avian pain therapy, anaesthesia and surgery. His postgraduate thesis is focused on the use of alfaxalone anaesthesia in birds.
