SHARKS' WIN NOW STADIUM FOLKLORE SO where will that thrilling NRL Grand Final sit on the list of magic moments here at ANZ Stadium? Certainly, for long-suffering Sharks fans and every one of the 83,625 fans packed into ANZ Stadium, the moment Cronulla captain Paul Gallen lifted the NRL trophy for the first time in the club’s history will long be remembered. What an unbelievable Grand Final. And what a celebration that followed. (see report Pages 6-7) The event experience at the Stadium will keep evolving, following the NSW Government’s announcement in April that it is committed to the redevelopment of the venue as a world-class rectangular stadium. This investment will ensure ANZ Stadium Members, Corporate Clients and the general sporting public enjoy an event experience comparable to the finest in the world. Better transport and a re-energised Sydney Olympic Park town centre to supercharge the pre-and-post-event atmosphere are also on the way. The NSWRL Blues are the latest elite sporting team to move into Sydney Olympic Park and establish a high-performance centre in the precinct. They will soon be located directly across the road from ANZ Stadium. (see Pages 20-21) In the meantime, the Stadium is preparing to host one of the greatest years of sport and entertainment events in the 19-year history of the venue. Make sure you are part of this incredible journey . . . next year and beyond. – Arthur Stanley

N exciting new vision for Sydney Olympic Park released by the NSW Government is poised to supercharge the pre-and-post-event experience at ANZ Stadium. The Stadium precinct at Sydney Olympic Park will be invigorated under the plan to create a lively 24-hour town centre with dramatically improved transport links to the area. Planning Minister Rob Stokes, together with Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres, have unveiled the draft Masterplan 2030 for Sydney Olympic Park, which will go on exhibition for community feedback. “These draft plans will help transform the area into a vibrant town centre where residents, workers and visitors can enjoy some of the best that Sydney has to offer,” Mr Stokes said. Mr Ayres said Sydney Olympic Park’s role as a sports and entertainment hub will be further developed and its Olympic legacy recognised and protected under the plans. “In one space, the community will continue to have access to world-class sporting events, concerts and entertainment, amid lively streets bustling with shops, cafes and a buzzing nightlife, as well as parks, open space and shared pathways for cycling and walking,” Mr Ayres said. More cafes, restaurants and bars close to ANZ Stadium will generate new atmosphere preand-post events. The 2030 Masterplan has been updated from the original version that was released in 2010. HIS was for the true blue believers. The Sky Blue believers. Those who had stuck solid with the Cronulla Sharks through 49 years of misery, misfortune and missed opportunities. The sheer outpouring of joy that followed the Sharks’ epic 14-12 Grand Final win over the Melbourne Storm at ANZ Stadium on the first Sunday in October will long be remembered. A crowd of 83,625 fans jammed into the Stadium. Millions more watched on television. And all of us got to share in one of the best sports stories of 2016. The Sharks. The club that had not won a premiership since they entered the league in 1967. The club that had been beaten in three heart-breaking deciders – 1973, 1978 and 1997. The pride of the Shire who had survived the threat of bankruptcy in the 1980s, and again in the 90s . . . and the club that had survived the ASADA doping scandal when many had predicted a rapid demise. Indeed, when Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen lifted the premiership trophy in front of a sea of sky blue, black and white at ANZ Stadium,
the weight of half a century of expectation was also lifted. Forever. The atmosphere inside the Stadium had to be experienced to be fully appreciated. Experienced sports action photographer Dan Himbrechts, who had been stationed in front of the Sharks’ active supporters area at the northern end of the Stadium, said later: “My ears were ringing like I’d been at an AC/DC concert.” Residents right across Sydney’s sprawling west reported that they could hear the deafening roar that followed the fulltime siren. And there were so many renditions of Up Up Cronulla, it actually shot to No. 42 on the iTunes chart. So move over AMCO Cup, there’s now a slightly bigger brass object sitting in the Sharks’ trophy cabinet these days. The victory was not achieved without mayhem and melodrama, of course. Sharks players scrambled to shut down a Storm attacking raid in the final seconds, with centre Ricky Leutele making a try-saving tackle on Marika Koroibete as the fulltime siren sounded to secure the famous triumph The pulsating decider was the latest in a sequence of NRL Grand Finals that will probably never be repeated.

Think about what ANZ Stadium Members, Corporate Clients and supporters have experienced over the past three years on rugby league’s biggest day: • IN 2014, the Rabbitohs broke a 43-year title drought to bring up their 21st premiership with victory over arch-rivals the Canterbury Bulldogs in front of 83,833 fans (a record at ANZ Stadium in the current configuration); • IN 2015, the Cowboys won their first-ever title in a game many consider to be the greatest Grand Final in rugby league’s 108year history; • AND now, in 2016, the Sharks getting home in a cliff-hanger and once again reminding us how much live sport can enliven and enrich our lives. The Storm were very brave, and magnanimous in defeat: an extra minute or two on the clock and this might have been a very different Grand Final story. For the Sharks, there were so many heroes: Andrew Fifita turning in an Arthur Beetson-like performance and scoring one of the great frontrowers’ tries of all time; Luke Lewis winning the Clive Churchill Medal
as the best player in the decider; Jack Bird playing 60 minutes with a badly damaged elbow. James Maloney showing why he was a popular pick as the best buy of 2016. But there was no bigger hero than Captain Courageous Gallen, who paid tribute to his fans and the Stadium as he accepted the Provan Summons Trophy. “I’m so happy for everyone in the Shire, for the fans who have stuck with us. This was for them,” Gallen said, adding: “The atmosphere here at ANZ Stadium is unbelievable . . . this is the best Stadium in the world when it’s packed like this.”

HE Parramatta Eels will play the majority of their home games at ANZ Stadium in seasons 2017-18 in a boon for Stadium Members, Corporate Clients, and fans of rival clubs that call the Olympic venue home. After a year of disaster and misfortune, the Eels will move into Sydney Olympic Park for home games while the new 30,000-seat Western Sydney Stadium is built at Parramatta. The early-season highlight for Eels supporters will clearly be their annual Easter Monday blockbuster against arch-rivals the Wests Tigers on 17 April. That will follow the always-anticipated Good Friday match-up between the Bulldogs and the Rabbitohs on 14 April. A crowd of 36,112 packed in to ANZ Stadium in 2016 to watch the Eels reign 8-0 in an absolute arm-wrestle against the Tigers, while an awesome 50,000-plus attended the 2014 Easter Monday game hosted by the Eels. The Eels and ANZ Stadium are committed to providing a great eventday experience for their fans, with a number of transport initiatives ready to be rolled out for the 2017 move to Sydney Olympic Park.
The Eels are expected to play as many as 10 home games at ANZ Stadium in season 2017. Confirmation of their home games will come with the release of the official 2017 NRL draw. The Eels will join the Bulldogs and the Rabbitohs in playing the majority of their home matches at ANZ Stadium in season 2017, while the Tigers (4 matches) and the Dragons (2 matches) are also committed to building their Membership and corporate client bases with home games at the State’s biggest venue. Keep an eye out for these individual match-ups early in 2017 – Jarryd Hayne up against his old club the Parra Eels for the first time; and the Rabbitohs’ new signing Robbie Farah up against his former club Wests Tigers. Bring it on. Supporters of all five ANZ Stadium home clubs will be entitled to reciprocal Club Membership entry rights to a number of games featuring their team against rival Stadium home clubs. (*Individual clubs will confirm what games will feature reciprocal Membership rights.) And, of course, ANZ Stadium Members will be entitled to every NRL game played at the Stadium as part of their 2017 Membership. For NRL fans, it can be a long summer . . . but the footy will be back with a bang in 2017.

OOTBALL fans are rushing to lock in their seats for one of the biggest sporting events of 2017 as English Premier League giants Arsenal prepare to make their first trip to Australia in 40 years. The second phase of tickets to the #ArsenalinSydney Tour games have just been released, and there are still great seats available for both Arsenal v Sydney FC on Thursday 13 July and Arsenal v Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 15 July. Gunners supporters have jumped at the chance to secure their seats in the northern stands of ANZ Stadium, which will be transformed into the club’s celebrated North Bank to replicate the match-day experience at Emirates Stadium in London. Many rusted-on fans craving the ultimate Arsenal fan experience have booked for The Foundry at ANZ Stadium, which will feature a cocktail function with a 4-hour beverage package, entertainment and Category A seating. Sydney FC Members and Western Sydney Wanderers Members have moved fast to secure seats in the southern stands of ANZ Stadium where the Sydney clubs’ supporters areas will be located. The southern end will become The Clock End for the two blockbusters, just as it is at Emirates Stadium. Among those fans already locked and loaded for the #ArsenalinSydney Tour games are a host of highprofile supporters, including Fox Sports presenter Tara Rushton (above left) and NSW Blues rugby league star Josh Mansour (left). “What an occasion to earmark in the diary: I’m counting the days until we get to experience Arsenal in Sydney,” said Rushton. Penrith and NSW Blues winger Mansour is a passionate football fan, having juggled playing commitments with football and rugby league right through his school days. “I started playing football when I was four and grew up wanting to play for Arsenal,” Mansour said. “I still love football and I can’t wait to see Arsenal here in Sydney at ANZ Stadium,” Mansour said. “It will be a pleasure to talk football with like-minded Gunners supporters and everyone who enjoys world-class sport.”

YDNEY Olympic Park is turning Red and Black this summer as the Western Sydney Wanderers call the sporting precinct home. The mighty Wanderers will play 13 games in the Park in 2016/17 with five blockbusters – including two Sydney Derbies – at Sydney’s Olympic stadium. “Sydney Olympic Park offers two exceptional venues in ANZ Stadium and Spotless Stadium,” said Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas. “The move provides a major growth opportunity for the Club and allows us to offer a greater number of fans access to our blockbuster matches both now and into the future. “We look forward to creating an environment that retains the atmosphere that has become synonymous with Wanderers matches.” It may be a new home, but fans can expect the same old Wanderers. After making the Grand Final for a third time in their four-year history, the Red and Black have hit the ground running, with a number of impressive signings this offseason sure to keep them among the A-League’s elite. The Wanderers have brought in 10 new players, but it’s marquee player Nicolas Martinez – who joins from Greek giants Olympiacos – that has the fans really excited for the current season. And the skilful attacking midfielder already has his sights on an impressive debut season. "The aim is to take at least one or two trophies . . . I want to win," said Martinez. "I don't come here to be a tourist, I come here to achieve important things. I’m very happy because I’ve come to a great team – one of the best in Australia.” With the Wanderers set to maintain their exceptional performances on the pitch, it’s only right that the passionate support continues off it. The Red and Black Bloc, Wanderers’ famed supporter group, will set up shop in the northern end of ANZ Stadium and turn the Club’s new home into an intimidating away day for travelling teams. And no day will deserve an electrifying atmosphere more than the Sydney Derby. “We share a vision with the Wanderers for the Sydney Derby to become one of the world’s great football derbies and one of the great sporting events in Australia,” said Greg Sleigh, ANZ Stadium’s General Manager of Event and Business Development. “The blockbuster games will be played in front of a massive crowd

The Wanderers have established themselves as a major force in both Australia and Asia, having won one A-League Premiership and an AFC Champions League title in their short history. Formed in April 2012, the Wanderers were established with a strong community focus. A series of community forums across Western Sydney helped choose the club's name and colours, as well as their culture and playing style. The club's record-breaking inaugural season won them an A-League premiership and saw the club reach the 2013 A-League Grand Final. The Wanderers followed that up by contesting the 2014 A-League Grand Final and securing second place in their second season of the league. The Wanderers were also crowned Asian Champions in their debut Champions League season. So pull on your jerseys and be part of an exciting new era for the Wanderers in Sydney Olympic Park.

ICTURE the scene. It's the year after a fruitless World Cup and with fresh blood required, the coach hands out Test debuts to a long list of players. Super Rugby talent is thrown headfirst into the unforgiving crucible of Test rugby. Some handle the heat, others melt. A painful defeat to a trans-Tasman nemesis at ANZ Stadium follows and it's not the only loss of a wobbly winter. A nation's faith is tested. The Wallabies in 2016? Try New Zealand in 2008. Three years before they won a World Cup. It can be easy to focus on bad defeats when it comes to Australian rugby, and heaven knows there have been a few in 2016 to train the sights on.
England arrived with a basic gameplan and, knowing the Wallabies were the sum of many new parts, defended their way to a series win. New Zealand added to the pain with a victory in Sydney that left the Wallabies shell-shocked, and they backed it up with another win in Wellington a week later. Amid all that rubble, it was very hard to pick out some positives. But, they were there. There are positives in Australian rugby that Wallabies fans can hold on to as they press forward to the 2019 World Cup under coach Michael Cheika. The 2015 World Cup was a success story, of sorts, for Australia. Making the final was above the expectations of most and a country's pride in the Wallabies was clear. But the age profile of the side – a quarter of the squad was over 30 – meant the party wasn't going to last forever. A generational shift was needed and Cheika decided to get it started

as soon as possible. He blooded a host of new faces against England, like Dane Haylett-Petty, Samu Kerevi and Adam Coleman. He then threw a few more against the Kiwis, like Reece Hodge, Mike Alalaatoa and then later still, he gave Lopeti Timani and Tom Roberston their first Test caps. By midway through the Rugby Championship, Cheika had given nine new players their Test debuts, with the likelihood of a handful more on the Spring Tour to come. Bringing in new talent is always a tricky challenge, with the potential to go wrong. Pear-shaped, even. The top-10 in world rugby has never been more competitive, and up against the world No.1 All Blacks (arguably one of the best teams ever), the world No.2 English, the world No.4 Springboks and the world No.7 Argentinians, Cheika trying to install new talent into his Test team was like trying to change tyres in the Bathurst 1000. Without the car stopping.
But the tyres have now been changed, now. Yes, the car has a few dings, but it is still in the race. The Wallabies' second-halves against the Kiwis showed fight, wins over South Africa and Argentina were hard-fought, the scrum is now a strength and the reunfication of Will Genia and Quade Cooper has worked a treat. And amid all of those new faces, some gems have been discovered. Hodge and Coleman are keepers, Alalaatoa and Robertson have enormous potential and Haylett-Petty, Kerevi and Sefa Naivalu are players who can excite. They are the Wallabies of the future. They are the Wallabies you will see in the opening Test of the 2017 Bledisloe Cup series at ANZ Stadium. In 2008, the All Blacks blooded 15 new players. Seven of them played in a winning World Cup final in 2011. *Iain Payten is Chief Rugby Writer for The Daily Telegraph and one of the most respected voices in the game.

N inspirational underground walk from the NSW Blues’ new $20 million Centre of Excellence to ANZ Stadium is poised to become one of the great traditions of State of Origin. As the NSWRL unveiled plans for the new home of the Blues opposite ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, CEO Dave Trodden confirmed the Blues' squad plans to utilise the underground passageway that famously brought Australia’s golden girl Cathy Freeman and her fellow athletes into the Olympic Stadium at the 2000 Sydney Games. The gateway to the famous athletes’ tunnel will sit inside the Blues’ compound, meaning the NSW players will have a short underground walk to the arena of ANZ Stadium. Trodden has a vision for the walls of the athletes’ tunnel to be adorned with inspirational images of Origin, as well as recognition for players who have worn the famous blue jersey down through the years. “The tunnel will link our new home base in Sydney Olympic Park with our home ground ANZ Stadium so there is a fantastic opportunity to make this walk one of the great traditions of State of Origin,” Trodden said. “You can imagine how inspirational it will be for our squad to march through the tunnel and out on to our home ground at ANZ Stadium. “The tunnel itself can help showcase our history . . . and the walk on game day has the potential to become a special part of Blues’ Origin tradition.” Work is well underway on the NSWRL Centre of Excellence, which will include a dedicated fulllength field and unprecedented access to ANZ Stadium. The NSWRL has already moved its administration offices from Moore Park to its new long-term home at Sydney Olympic Park in Greater Sydney. They have set up temporary offices in Herb Elliott Avenue – a punt kick from the site of their new facility at Fig Grove on Dawn Fraser Avenue. On 17 August, NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres joined NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley and NSW Rugby League Chairman Dr George Peponis to turn the first sod on the game-changing facility that will provide the most advanced sports training facilities in the country. “NSW remains the spiritual home of Rugby League, so from our perspective, investing in world class training and administration facilities is exactly what the sport deserves,” Mr Ayres said as he kicked off works on the new Centre of Excellence. “The first stage of the build will provide a full size training field and a new building for specialised support facilities and the offices of the NSW Rugby League. “A $10 million NSW Government funding toward the facility highlights the strong commitment to grow Sydney Olympic Park as a sporting and business gateway to Western Sydney.” NSWRL Chairman Dr Peponis said the new high-performance centre would be used extensively by groups representing all levels of rugby league, including women’s rugby league and the game’s grassroots and indigenous programs. “This Centre of Excellence provides one of the highest performance facilities of any sport in the country and everyone in the NSW Rugby League family will benefit from being able to use this and other specialist sports grounds in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct,” Dr Peponis said. NSWRL Blues coach Laurie Daley said access to state-of-the-art facilities at the Centre of Excellence, as well other facilities in the precinct, was a great boost for rugby league in its heartland of Western Sydney. “The new Centre of Excellence will improve preparation for our junior representatives and everyone from elite players to referees – not to mention add to the home ground advantage of ANZ Stadium for the Blues," Daley said. The Blues’ dedicated training field is scheduled to open early 2017, with the NSWRL Centre of Excellence building to open in 2018. – Arthur Stanley

IG plays, bigger hits and a whole lot of touchdowns – the College Football Sydney Cup had it all and there could be more on the way. An exuberant crowd of 61,247 sports fans embraced the College Football experience as the University of California, Berkeley ran out 51-31 winners against the University of Hawaii on a spectacular Sydney day at ANZ Stadium. Cheerleaders hyped the crowd, marching bands put on a show and there was even a cannon firing after every touchdown – and boy did it get a workout with the two Colleges putting up a whopping 82 points between them. There was plenty of action off the field too as spectators immersed themselves in some classic College Game Day traditions. Thousands turned out for the pre-game tailgate in Sydney Olympic Park and inside the Stadium the American-style novelty food, Kiss Cam and T-Shirt launchers went down a treat. The success of the event has organisers moving quickly to bring Sydney Cup II to Sydney in the near future, with key figures seeing the event as a long-term fixture. “I’m certain this won’t be the only time this happens,” said victorious Cal Head Coach Sonny Dykes after the game. “It just makes sense on so many different levels and it’s such a great opportunity to experience something that is so different and special - I’d anticipate this becoming a regular event.” With over 61,000 in the stands and millions watching on TV worldwide the event was an undeniable crowd pleaser. So keep your eyes peeled as Sydney looks to double down on the touchdowns.

T
HIS was a game that will forever define the Swans v Giants cross-city rivalry. A brutal shift in the powerbase of AFL footy in Sydney. The unheralded Greater Western Sydney Giants giving the eastern suburbs-based Sydney Swans a hiding in the first all-Sydney AFL footy final ever played. The strategic importance of this game will never be forgotten. A crowd of 60,222 filed through the gates of ANZ Stadium to witness the historic match-up – the biggest AFL crowd in Sydney in almost a decade and the third biggest AFL Finals crowd ever played outside Victoria. Many of these supporters would have been locked out of the Final at any other venue in Sydney. Many were not AFL supporters at all, but rather general sports fans keen to witness a historic event. With ANZ Stadium soon to be transformed into a world-class rectangular venue as the key part of the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion investment in sporting infrastructure, the SwansGiants blockbuster could well have been the last AFL footy game ever played at Sydney’s Olympic stadium. Given the historic all-Sydney Final will be remembered as one of the most significant AFL footy games ever held in NSW, it was quite a legacy. The Stadium has hosted 55 AFL games between 2002 and 2016. It averages a healthy regular-season crowd of 40,403 – an average crowd second only to Adelaide Oval in terms of venues. The average crowd at the 11 Finals staged at the Stadium is 45,813. While the 60,222 fell short of the record 72,393 crowd that turned out for Swans v Collingwood in 2003, it was still the eighth biggest AFL crowd ever recorded in Sydney . . . with all the major crowds recorded at the Olympic stadium. The Swans v Giants Final was a rip-snorter, with the Giants running out convincing 36-point victors – a six-goal belting of Big Brother from Moore Park. Almost from the first bounce, the two Sydney teams ripped into each other with fierce intent. This was not merely a football final but a genuine turf war. Just five years earlier, the Giants had arrived in the West as unloved easybeats. Incredibly, they left ANZ Stadium on Saturday 10 September just one game away from a historic first Grand Final appearance – and with a new breed of supporters. Unfortunately for Giants supporters, they fell just one game short – narrowly beaten by the Western Bulldogs in a Preliminary Final in Week 3 of the Finals. The Dogs, of course, going on to win their first AFL Premiership Flag since 1954. The fact the Giants lost veteran Stevie Johnston, as a result of a suspension that came from the brutal Qualifying Final at ANZ Stadium, ultimately proved costly. In years to come, 2016 will be remembered as the year the Giants came of age. And, certainly, no one who witnessed it will forget their dismantling of the Swans in Week 1 of the Finals. The Giants are part of a growing family of elite sporting teams that share Sydney Olympic Park. Giants headquarters is in Olympic Boulevarde. Their boutique home ground Spotless Stadium (the Sydney Showground Stadium) is a mere kick or two of the Sherrin from the gates of the Olympic stadium. They have well and truly made their mark in Greater Sydney.

STADIUM BOARD APPOINTMENTS
NEW BOARD GIVES STA A WORLD-CLASS TEAM
E
XPERIENCED company director Christine McLoughlin – a leader with a passion for sport and community engagement, and a former Telstra Business Woman of the Year – has been appointed Chairman of the ANZ Stadium Board. In an interview with STADIUM editor Arthur Stanley, Christine (pictured) says the sixmember Board brings a wealth of experience and expertise to ANZ Stadium at an exciting time in the Olympic venue’s history. And importantly, she says the Board is committed to protecting the interests of the valued ANZ Stadium Members and Corporate Clients.
26
STADIUM: You’ve been in the role as Chairman since 1 July, so you have already witnessed some magnificent events at ANZ Stadium. Have you enjoyed the ride so far? Christine: I have been very impressed with both the capacity of the Stadium to host
amazing events and the commitment of the management team to try to give the Members and Guests the best possible experience. The momentum through the football season was terrific. Each code and each team bringing their own unique colour and enthusiasm to the Stadium. Every event is different, but the dedication of the fans and supporters is consistent.
I particularly enjoy seeing families coming along to the events at ANZ Stadium. STADIUM: Most Sydneysiders have fond memories of their experiences at the city’s Olympic Stadium since it was purposebuilt for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. What are your favourite memories? Christine: 2000 was my "luck year". As winner of the Telstra Business Woman of the Year, I received the prize of a lifetime – tickets to many of the sensational Olympic events, including finals. I still have all of the tickets! In addition to the athletes and atmosphere in the Stadium, the enthusiasm of the volunteers is still vivid. The Stadium experience was incredible. Since then, highlights have included signature events for all of the sporting codes and some fabulous concerts. STADIUM: Why is the Stadium important for Sydney? Christine: The Stadium stands as an icon
ADIUM M
Picture: Eliot Cohen of the new millennium and an enduring symbol of Sydney’s coming of age as a global city. Importantly now, the Stadium is geographically placed at the heart of the fastest growing part of Sydney. So while it has been a grand stage for the city’s major sports and entertainment events for 18 years and has helped establish our status as a major event city, the next 20 years will be even more important as Sydney looks to host major events at a world-class venue. At the same time, the Stadium is supporting our important clubs and sporting bodies who bring our communities together. STADIUM: What role does sport and recreation play in our society? Christine: I grew up in a small country town where team sport was the “glue”. Sport and recreation help to build communities through social inclusion and a sense of connection. They also bind families through
shared experiences and achievements, where being a member of a sports team, or a member of a fan club, becomes a common point of connection. Through participation, sport helps address anti-social behaviour and becomes an important part of education and defining values. Sport also contributes to economic growth through business investment and employment and also instils a sense of national, city or community pride. STADIUM: The NSW Government appointed a new Board? What is its role? Christine: The Board is made up of independent, non-executive directors and the role of the Board is to act as the steward of the business. We act in the best interests of our various stakeholders – most notably our Members and our major shareholder, the NSW Government – and ensure good governance. On the business side, we work closely with CEO Daryl Kerry and the management team in
looking at future events, Members’ interests, Stadium infrastructure, and finances and related matters. STADIUM: We are all excited by the NSW Government’s commitment to transforming ANZ Stadium into a world-class rectangular stadium. When can we expect to see work begin on the redevelopment? Christine: The redevelopment is scheduled to begin in the current term of Government (by March 2019). The intention is to time the redevelopment with the completion of Parramatta Stadium, delivering the best results for fans and the codes. STADIUM: Will the Members, clubs and fans have a say in the final design of the new-look Stadium? Will there be consultation with key stakeholders? Christine: Most definitely. The NSW Government has commenced a process that Continue Page 28

From Page 27 will involve extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including our valued ANZ Stadium Members who will be given the opportunity for input on aspects of the design. We will consult with Members and other stakeholders to understand their needs, and use that input to help form the Project Design Brief. We really are looking at a nextgeneration Stadium and a vibrant precinct. STADIUM: What can Members expect at the new Stadium once the redevelopment is completed? Christine: Firstly, ANZ Stadium Members will continue to experience Australia’s biggest sports and entertainment events, with significant sporting content already secured on the back of the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion investment in stadium infrastructure.
ANZ Stadium Members will enjoy wonderful new facilities in a world-class rectangular Stadium, with all spectators significantly closer to the action. There will also be improved access to the precinct, and currently underway is the planning for a revitalised Sydney Olympic Park village for a lively preand-post-event experience. STADIUM: Post redevelopment, will it be easier to get to and from the Sydney Olympic Park precinct? What are the plans for improving traffic and transport? Christine: The Stadium is ideally located in relation to public transport; well serviced by trains and a number of Sydney bus routes. We are looking at how we can make transport to and from the Stadium more efficient. Current public transport services will be enhanced by the WestConnex motorway project and the
Parramatta Light Rail project, the latter that was announced by the NSW Government in December 2015. The spine of the proposed route runs from Westmead to Strathfield via Sydney Olympic Park. We will also be working with the Government on improving direct Sydney train services to Sydney Olympic Park as we know this is very important to people from all over Sydney who want to participate in our Stadium events. STADIUM: I’m sure all ANZ Stadium Members, guests and Corporate Clients will join me in wishing you and your fellow Board Members a long and prosperous tenancy. Christine: Thank you. We will certainly be doing our best for NSW and for Sydney . . . and especially for our valued ANZ Stadium Members and their guests.

ORMER NSW Premier John Fahey – remembered fondly for his passionate pursuit and delivery of the 2000 Sydney Olympics – is back at Sydney Olympic Park as Chairman of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority. In announcing Mr Fahey’s appointment, Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said Mr Fahey had an outstanding record serving at the highest level of Government, national sport, community organisations and business. “We all know John’s passion for NSW, best highlighted as he leaped out of his seat when Sydney was announced as host city for the 2000 Olympic Games,” Mr Ayres said. “John brings a wealth of leadership experience across public affairs and sports administration to a role that will only build on his substantial Olympic legacy.” New members to the SOPA Board include businesswomen Pippa Downes and Romilly Madew, with David Baffsky and Jill Davies being reappointed. Former Diamonds captain Liz Ellis remains a SOPA Board member.
Mr Ayres also thanked outgoing Chairman Michael Knight. “Michael’s leadership has seen Sydney Olympic Park develop into a world-class sports and entertainment precinct that will serve generations into the future,” he said. The Sydney Olympic Park Authority is responsible for managing and developing the 640 hectares that comprise Sydney Olympic Park, located in the geographical heart of metropolitan Sydney. Since the 2000 Olympics, the Park has developed into an important urban centre and built on its legacy as a premier destination for sporting, entertainment and cultural activities and one of Australia’s largest urban parklands. The future promises to be equally exciting. Under Masterplan 2030, the Authority will manage the expansion of the Park to support a daily population of over 60,000 and up to 20,000 daily visitors. In all its future activities, the Authority says it will retain a commitment to building on the uniqueness of the suburb as a business and educational hub and the No.1 destination for major events, sporting and leisure activities in Greater Sydney. The release of the 2030 Sydney Olympic Park Masterplan is an important step to ensuring the precinct reaches its true potential.

N December 2015, the 2017 Arsenal In Sydney Tour was announced and the hospitality enquiries came flying in. We spoke to three savvy business leaders who got in early to ensure
their key clients and guests will be at ANZ Stadium for the biggest sporting event of 2017. Stuart Silver of Silver Productions locked in tickets to The Foundry Cocktail Party which boasts a range of entertainment extras as well as Level 4 seating. Even though he is not an Arsenal fan (he barracks for Brentford), he could easily see the value in experiencing the blockbusters matches with clients. “I saw this as an opportunity to take my clients to see the superstars of the EPL without leaving Sydney. ANZ Stadium is always fantastic for major events, so what better way to bond than by watching some of the world’s best players showcase their skills.” Stuart was one of the first clients to book into The Foundry, knowing that the anticipation of an event is half the fun. “I booked in straight
EXPERIENCE away for two reasons: to get the best seats and so I didn’t miss out. “I knew both Arsenal games were going to be in hot demand and I also wanted to invite my clients early – they’re really looking forward to July.” Stuart also has a little bonus for his clients on the night: “Well buy them all Arsenal jerseys to wear as a fun little extra to complete the experience.” Philip Iacovou, Director at Lefand Group Building & Facility Management, has secured an outdoor Zone Box for his clients at both clashes. “I booked immediately knowing it’s a team from overseas coupled with the love of soccer in general and the atmosphere at ANZ Stadium. I’m actually a Chelsea fan, but I’m definitely interested in the spectacle of this event.” Iacovou is a regular Zone Box client, and jumped at the opportunity
to lock in his seats. “I purchase this box regularly throughout the year as you can’t beat the centre field location. When it came to booking Arsenal I wanted to beat the rush as I know games like this don’t happen very often and are always in high demand.” Fred Khoury, Managing Director at Access Group Solutions, booked a 14-person suite, knowing the spectacle of the events is going to be huge. “The early bird catches the worm and booking early ensured we have a suite next year.” With spectacular views, a private balcony, gourmet dining and dedicated concierge and waitstaff, Khoury knows his clients are guaranteed an excellent night. TATE of Origin, Taronga Zoo, the Blue Mountains and Twitter Head Offices were just part of Arsenal ace Freddie Ljungberg’s whirlwind tour of Sydney in July. In Oz to promote the Gunners’ 2017 #ArsenalinSydney Tour, Karl Fredrik Ljungberg (universally known across the football world as “Freddie”) is a cult hero among Arsenal fans after a glittering 10year career with the Gunners. Freddie, who met with a group of diehard fans at the Four Seasons Hotel for an exclusive Q & A, said the Arsenal in Sydney Tour was a way to give back to the fans who have supported the club over the years. “Australia is quite far away from England, so I think it was a great opportunity for the club and the fans to see such a beautiful country. I think it was good for both sides. “We have so many fans all over the world, so for them to get close
to the players and the club that’s great and I think they deserve that because they follow us all the time through thick and thin.” Known as an Invincible by Gunners fans, Freddie met with our very own Immortal Andrew Johns at ANZ Stadium on the night of Origin III, witnessing the Blues’ thrilling last-minute win over Queensland. “It was my first live game and I had Ben [Barba] sitting next to me explaining quite a lot and we had a great chat about the similarities between the two sports. I loved it, there was a great atmosphere and the speed of the game and that ferocity of the hits was quite amazing,” Freddie said of his Origin experience. Don’t miss your chance to see the superstars of Arsenal live when they play back-to-back games against Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers at ANZ Stadium in July 2017. Tickets are on sale now. SYDNEY THUNDER STADIUM
ROLLING THUNDER Julian Keith
C
RACK went the bat and boom went the Thunder as Ben Rohrer smashed the Sydney Thunder to a final over win and their maiden KFC T20 Big Bash League title. Rohrer’s monster six down the ground came with three balls to spare in the BBL05 Final and ended a lean four-year stretch for the Sydney Olympic Park-based outfit who have come a long way from the struggles of their infancy. Once pretenders, now a power . . . the Thunder will begin the season as favourites to retain the trophy and that’s no surprise given their dominance last season. Fans flocked to Spotless Stadium to catch the entertaining Thunder as they scored a league-best 1656 runs, 129 more than the next best performed team, on their way to the title. It wasn’t just a hot bat that made the Thunder contenders. In Clint McKay and gun all-rounder Andre Russell, the Lime Green had two of the BBL’s top three wicket-takers on the books. And a strong offseason has the Thunder poised to make a run at back-to-back trophies. McKay has already re-signed, Russell is expected back for a second stint, and the return of Pat Cummins, who missed all of last season through injury, means the Thunder attack will be more dangerous than ever. Standout batsman Usman Khawaja will be back and even though inspirational captain Michael Hussey has called time on his playing career, he remains with the Thunder as Director of Cricket, meaning
his wisdom and experience will still be felt throughout the club. But the most important move of the offseason was the re-signing of Head Coach Paddy Upton, one of the most experienced coaches in world cricket and architect of the club’s title-winning run. “We want to create a team that is the most desired by fans, support staff and players. Winning last year was a huge success but there is still a fair amount we can do to continue to take the club forward on and off the field,” said Upton. You can bet the fans will be converging en masse to Spotless Stadium once again this season, and ANZ Stadium Members will be part of the action with full access to three Thunder home games and a special presale offer for the Sydney Derby.

FAREWELL PHIL
44
IT is with much sadness we announce that our cherished colleague Phil Tyler passed away in early September after a brief illness. Phil joined the Stadium in 1999 as a pioneer member of the Stadium’s customer service event day leadership team and up until recently had worked almost every event in that time. Phil met many Members over the years and was a great champion of our venue and supporter of the Membership program. Event days will never be the same without Phil, but the tremendous legacy he’s left will be remembered. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Phil’s family.

Winners . . . Fiona Montgomery and Phillipa Ternes outside the Cake Tin battleground in Wellington
FIONA'S BLEDISLOE WIN Jennifer Dowd
W
HEN ANZ Stadium Member Fiona Montgomery, of West Pennant Hills, received a call from our Membership Department back in January she thought she had done something wrong. “I’d recently renewed my Membership online and I thought I must have filled it out incorrectly,” Fiona said. But instead, as winner of our Renew Online and On time and WIN competition, she got the best kind of surprise: an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the second Bledisloe Cup Test in Wellington on 27 August. “I was in shock – I said to her ‘but I never win anything’!” Fiona, an ANZ Stadium Member of three years and life-long Wallabies fan instantly knew who she was going to invite. “I became a member with my friend Philippa Ternes – we go to all the games together – so I couldn’t wait to call her.” They enjoyed a weekend of Kiwi hospitality, sight-seeing, pre-match dining and the big game at Westpac Stadium. Here’s Fiona’s account of their time: We had an amazing weekend in Wellington at the end of August for the second Bledisloe Cup match. Our flight from Sydney was full of rugby fans, and the whole town of Wellington had a strong rugby vibe for the weekend. On Saturday night we entered the “Cake Tin” – a small splash of Gold in a sea of Black with high hopes of a better performance from our Wallaby boys. The atmosphere was electric as the All Blacks performed the Haka, and every time the All Blacks had
the ball, the roar of the crowd was deafening. The result did not go the way we hoped, and it was a long walk from Westpac Stadium back into town . . . surrounded on all sides by All Black fans who heckled and jibed us all the way home . . . it was a lot of fun! It was fantastic to be a tourist in Wellington and we walked our legs off over the weekend. What an experience – thank you ANZ Stadium! BE A WINNER IN 2017! YOU could be a winner too! One lucky Gold Member will win in 2017 with our Renew Online and On time and WIN competition. See your invoice for details. Plus look out for further Member exclusive promotions throughout 2017 via your eNews and at the game.
MORE WINNING MEMBERS – NRL FOOTY TIPPING And the results are in! Andrew Lam has won the 2016 ANZ Stadium NRL Footy Tipping competition and has picked up a VIP trip for two to the 2017 Auckland Nines. Andrew took part in the competition and finished first convincingly with 154 points. Honourable mention also to Fraser Smith, and Peter Foster who won the runner up prizes of a fully catered Private Suite for 20 people to an NRL club game in 2017 and third prize of two ANZ Stadium Memberships for 2017. Be sure to keep an eye out on Members’ eNews in February for details of our 2017 NRL Footy Tipping Comp.

MEMBERS’ CONFIDENTIAL IT'S the day all rugby league fans and players dream of - the 2016 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final. It wasn’t the year for the Rabbitohs or Dragons, so our Stadium Ambassadors Greg Inglis and Benji Marshall dropped by the Members’ Lounge on the big day to meet ANZ Stadium Members and guests and soak up the Grand Final day vibe. Some Members were lucky enough to have their meeting immortalised. Here’s our gallery.
