Presentación Las academias olímpicas nacionales constituyen una especie de escuelas de olimpismo que, con el apoyo y amparo de los respectivos comités olímpicos y por delegación, difunden y defienden a nivel nacional con sus actividades la historia, la cultura y la rica filosofía humanista del olimpismo. La institución es tan antigua como los mismo Juegos y desde la casta de los nomofilakos, que en los Juegos de Olimpia asesoraban a los jueces de los concursos, a la implicación cultural que Pierre de Coubertin le quiso dar, cuajaron en su moderna versión en la segunda mitad del pasado siglo con la fundación de la Academia Olímpica Internacional en Olimpia (Grecia) inaugurada el 16 de junio de 1961. El Comité Olímpico Español ha colaborado de forma decisiva con la Academia Olímpica Internacional enviando delegados a todos los cursos allí organizados, así como conferenciantes para cooperar en las tareas pedagógicas. El 25 de noviembre de 1968 se fundó en Madrid la Academia Olímpica Española, primera en el mundo entre las de su género, que ha venido desarrollando una intensa labor pedagógica y divulgativa tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, lo que ha merecido que a los reiterados premios que durante este medio siglo de existencia se le han venido otorgando, se le haya unido el de Real, concedido por S.M. Felipe VI, quien con Su presencia y apoyo a muchos de sus actos ha otorgado el máximo honor y respaldo social a la institución.

National Olympic academies represent a type of school for Olympism that—with the support and guidance of the respective Olympic committees and by delegation, they disseminate and uphold the history, culture and rich humanist philosophy of Olympism at a national level through their activities.

The institution is as old as the Games themselves and takes the baton from the nomophylakes—or guardians of the law—who advised the competition judges at the Olympia Games, as well as the cultural involvement with which Pierre de Coubertin wanted to imbue them. Their modern version crystallised in the second half of the last century with the founding of the International Olympic Academy in Olympia (Greece), inaugurated on 16 June 1961.

The Spanish Olympic Committee has worked decisively with the International Olympic Academy, sending representatives to all courses organised there, as well as conference speakers to collaborate with educational tasks. On 25 November 1968, the Spanish Olympic Academy was founded in Madrid, the first of its type in the entire world. It has never ceased in its intensive educational and promotional functions both within Spain and internationally, fully meriting the repeated prizes it has been awarded during its half century of existence. The Academy has now been honoured with the addition of Royal to its name, a title bestowed by His Majesty Felipe VI, whose presence and support at many of its events has endowed the institution with great honour and social support.

Las Academias Olímpicas Nacionales son las escuelas oficiales del olimpismo, a tenor de los postulados contenidos en la Carta Olímpica. La Academia Olímpica Internacional se fundó en Olimpia el 16 de junio de 1961 y el Comité Olímpico Español, desde esa fecha, colaboró activamente, con la AOI, enviando cada año estudiantes a sus cursos e igualmente profesores españoles para impartir conferencias.
The National Olympic Academies (NOAs) are the official schools of the Olympic movement, in accordance with the postulates contained in the Olympic Charter. The International Olympic Academy (IOA) was founded in Olympia on 16 June 1961 and the Spanish Olympic Committee has collaborated actively with the IOA since then, sending students every year to its courses and Spanish teachers to give conferences.
El 25 de noviembre de 1968 se fundó en Madrid la Academia Olímpica Española, en acto oficial presidido por el Presidente del COE, Juan Antonio Samaranch, y con la asistencia del Director del Instituto Nacional de Educación Física, José Mª Cagigal, y otras personalidades. Con ocasión de este acto se aceptó el memorando presentado por Conrado Durántez, asistente habitual a las Sesiones de Olimpia desde el principio. La AOE es la primera AON que se constituía como filial y colaboradora de la AOI. A lo largo de estos 50 años, la AOE ha venido celebrando oficialmente un Curso Anual de difusión olímpica en el que a la vez se hace la selección de entre los asistentes más cualificados de los que han de asistir al Curso Anual de la AOI. Cada curso es oficialmente anunciado por un programa y un cartel y sus trabajos editados en Actas, habiéndose celebrado en las fechas del 20, 30 y 40 Aniversario actos protocolarios a los que asistió el Presidente del COI y autoridades académicas y nacionales y presidido por S.A.R. el Príncipe de Asturias, Presidente de Honor de la AOE. Con ocasión de tales acontecimientos, el Coro de la Facultad de Educación Física de Madrid entonó, por primera vez en español, el Himno Olímpico, y también se recitó por primera vez en español la Oda Olímpica de Pierre de Coubertin.
On 25 November 1968, the Spanish Olympic Academy (AOE) was founded in Madrid in an official act presided by Juan Antonio Samaranch, the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), and with the attendance of José María Cagigal, Director of the National Institute for Physical Education, and other personalities. On this occasion the memorandum presented by Conrado Durántez, regular attendant to the Olympia Sessions since the beginning, was accepted. The AOE was the first NOA to be created as an IOA subsidiary and collaborator. During those 50 years, the AOE has officially held its Annual Course on disseminating the Olympic movement, which also selects from among the most qualified attendees those who will attend the IOA’s Annual Course. Each course is officially announced by a programme and poster and its work is published in the Minutes; it celebrated its 20th, 30th and the 40th anniversary with protocol events which were attended by the IOC President and academic and national authorities, and chaired by H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias, the AOE’s Honorary President. On occasion of those events, the Choir of the Madrid Physical Education Faculty sung the Olympic Hymn for the first time in Spanish and recited Pierre de Coubertin’s Ode to Sport also for the first time in Spanish. More than fifty publications on the Olympic movement have been published by the Spanish Olympic Academy, having received diplomas accrediting the participation of more than 5,000 students, and nine medals commemorating different anniversaries have also been minted. The Spanish Olympic Academy has helped to foster the creation of Olympic Academies in Africa, with courses in Benin (1997) and Togo (2001), creating as a consequence six Olympic Academies in the French speaking area.
Más de cincuenta publicaciones sobre temática olímpica han sido editadas por la Academia Olímpica Española, habiendo recibido diplomas acreditativos de participación más de 5.000 alumnos, y se han acuñado nueve medallas conmemorativas de las distintas efemérides. La AOE ha contribuido a la promoción para la creación de Academias Olímpicas en África con sendos cursos en Benin (1997) y Togo (2001), creándose como consecuencia de ellos seis Academias Olímpicas en el área francófona.

La necesidad de difundir el Olimpismo por los cauces del idioma y una cultura común, condujo a la AOE a impulsar la creación de la Asociación Iberoamericana de Academias Olímpicas, con una primera Sesión habida en Madrid el 26 de junio de 1988. Dos años más tarde, el 14 de junio de 1990, se redactaron los Estatutos de la Asociación y se eligió a la Junta Directiva. La Asociación ha venido programando Congresos bianuales en los que se discuten los planes de actuación y se discuten acuerdos en la difusión del olimpismo, a la par que se exponen y se someten a crítica los trabajos realizados por cada AON asociada durante el bienio. El resultado obtenido ha sido altamente positivo al pasar de cinco AOs, inicialmente asociadas, a las 28 que hoy día existen (Andorra, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, España, Guatemala, Guinea Ecuatorial, Honduras, México, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Portugal, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, Sao Tomé, Uruguay, Venezuela).
As a result of the need to foster the Olympic movement through a common language and culture, the Spanish Olympic Academy fostered the creation of the Ibero American Association of Olympic Academies, with the first session being held in Madrid on 26 June 1988. Two years later, on 14 June 1990, the Association’s Statutes were drafted and a Governing Board was elected. The Association schedules congresses every two years to discuss action plans and agreements in relation to the dissemination of the Olympic movement, while the work performed by each NOA during the two years is presented and subject to criticism. The results have been highly positive, increasing from the first five Olympic Academies to the 26 at present (Andorra, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, Honduras, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, São Tomé, Uruguay and Venezuela).
El COI reconoció oficialmente a la AIAO en 1996, y en 2002, durante el IX Congreso habido en León, la Asociación hubo de cambiar de nombre a la actual de Asociación Panibérica de Academias Olímpicas, al haberse asociado al grupo, las academias africanas de Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tomé y Guinea Ecuatorial.
The IOC recognised the AIAO (Ibero American Association of Olympic Academies) officially in 1996 and, during the 9th Congress in León in 2002, the Association had to change its name to the current name of the Pan Iberian Association of Olympic Academies (APAO) since the African academies of Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Equatorial Guinea became members of the group.
La Asociación imprime en Actas el contenido de los Congresos que son distribuidas a los distintos asociados, merced a la colaboración de la Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de España y ha editado doce publicaciones sobre olimpismo, destacando la titulada Orígenes del Olimpismo en Iberoamérica, en donde se estudia, por cada miembro asociado, cómo se introdujo la idea olímpica en cada país hasta la fundación del CON, publicación prologada por el Presidente del COI, Jacques Rogge. Medallas conmemorativas y carteles anunciadores se han realizado por la Asociación para los distintos Congresos.
The Association prints the Congresses’ contents in Minutes which are distributed to the various members, thanks to the collaboration from the International Cooperation Agency of Spain’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, and it has published twelve publications on the Olympic movement, which is worth highlighting Orígenes del Olimpismo en Iberoamérica (Origins of the Olympic Movement in Ibero-America) about how the Olympic idea was introduced in each country by each member until the National Olympic Committee was founded; the publication is prefaced by IOC President Jacques Rogge. The Association has prepared commemorative medals and posters for the various Congresses.

Based on the APAO, similar associations are going to be founded in Asia and Africa; Mario Francisco, President of the Benin NOC and OA, who has recently taken over the task from Tunisia’s Rida Layouni, is very excited about the latter project.

También impulsada por la AOE, se fundó en Madrid, el 1 de septiembre de 1996, la Unión Española de Filatelia Olímpica, al objeto de impulsar esta sección cultural y artística del fenómeno olímpico. La UEFO celebra Asambleas anuales y edita dos números anuales de la Revista Filatelia Olímpica la que, en el reciente certamen de Beijing, ha obtenido Diploma de Plata y Diploma Especial el libro El Fuego de Olimpia, en razón al exhaustivo estudio que en él se realiza sobre el símbolo del fuego en la historia olímpica. En el año 2007, el COE adquirió, con destino a la AOE, la Colección de Filatelia Olímpica Sebastián Sabaté, la mejor en su temática a nivel nacional, inaugurada en Exposición el 18 de diciembre de 2007 en presencia de los miembros del COI, S.A.R. Doña Pilar de Borbón y Mohamed Mzali.
Also fostered by the Spanish Olympic Academy, the UEFO (Spanish Union of Olympic Philately) was founded in Madrid on 1 September 1996 in order to foster this cultural and artistic part of the Olympic phenomenon. The UEFO holds annual Assemblies and publishes two editions every year of the magazine Filatelia Olímpica (Olympic Philately). The book El Fuego de Olimpia (The Fire of Olympia) obtained the Silver Diploma and Special Diploma at the recent event in Beijing as a result of the in-depth study made in the magazine about the fire symbol in the history of the Olympics. In 2007, the Spanish Olympic Committee acquired Sebastián Sabaté’s Olympic Stamp Collection, the best thematic collection in Spain, for the Spanish Olympic Academy, and it was inaugurated at an Exhibition on 18 December 2007 with the presence of IOC members H.R.H. Pilar de Borbón and Mohamed Mzali.

Likewise, fostered by the NOA, the Spanish Pierre de Coubertin Committee was created in Madrid on 6 October 1998 in order to disseminate the life, work and image of the person who restored the Olympic movement. Through a roaming Iconographic Exhibition on the famous French humanist, the Committee has disseminated his image and rich ideology by publishing five publications on his life and work. There are also twenty streets with his name. Two busts have been cast, one in 2000, by Galician artist Álvaro de la Vega, and the other on 23 March 2006, by Madrid sculptor Federico Lozoya, unveiled by H.R.H. King Juan Carlos, and accompanied by the IOC President Jacques Rogge who, after admiring the work, received a copy for the Lausanne Museum on 31 January 2007. The copy reproduces, with great accuracy, the photograph image of Pierre de Coubertin obtained in Nyons (Switzerland) in 1926, probably the most expressive and accurate image of the famous humanist.
Igualmente, bajo el impulso de la AON se creó en Madrid, el 6 de octubre de 1998, el Comité Español Pierre de Coubertin, al objeto de difundir la vida, obra e imagen del restaurador del movimiento olímpico. El Comité, a través de una Exposición Iconográfica itinerante sobre el célebre humanista francés, ha difundido a nivel nacional e internacional su imagen y rico ideario, habiéndose editado cinco publicaciones sobre su vida y obra. También existen veinte calles con su nombre y se han fundido dos bustos sobre su imagen, uno en el año 2000, obra del artista gallego Álvaro de la Vega, y otro el 23 de marzo de 2006, obra del escultor madrileño Federico Lozoya, desvelado por S.M. el Rey Don Juan Carlos, acompañado por el Presidente del COI, Jacques Rogge, que al manifestar su admiración por la obra le fue entregada una copia con destino al Museo de Lausana, el 31 de enero de 2007. La versión en cuestión reproduce, con gran fidelidad, la imagen fotográfica de Pierre de Coubertin obtenida en Nyons (Suiza) en 1926, quizá la más expresiva y fiel de cuantas se conservan del célebre humanista.

Por último, la etapa iniciada en 1990 y aún no acabada supone la de la creación de Centros de Estudios Olímpicos en distintas Universidades y Ayuntamientos. El CEO en cuestión se crea por la vía de un Convenio suscrito por el Presidente del COE, el Rector de la Universidad respectiva o Alcalde y el Presidente de la AOE. El COE-AOE cede un fondo bibliográfico de temática olímpica al CEO y ambas partes contratantes se comprometen a organizar ciclos de conferencias, seminarios o cursos de difusión olímpica, colaborando proporcionalmente en los costes. Hasta el momento se han creado 36 en las Universidades de: Autónoma de Barcelona, La Coruña, Granada, Cáceres, León, Almería, País Vasco, Murcia, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Córdoba, Alicante, Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid, Valladolid en Segovia, Autónoma de Madrid, Valencia, Europea Miguel de Cervantes de Valladolid, Cádiz, Alfonso X El Sabio, La Rioja, Jaén, Vigo y Santander, así como en los Ayuntamientos de Noja, La Nucía, Ayamonte y Chinchilla, estando en proyecto un convenio a nivel nacional para que exista un CEO en cada Universidad de España. Los días 22 y 23 de marzo de 2007 se celebró en la Universidad de Granada el I Congreso de CEOs, al objeto de aunar ideas y establecer una estrategia común, previéndose la celebración bienal de este tipo de reuniones y habiendo obtenido recientemente el Presidente del COE apoyo de sponsorización para el funcionamiento de los CEOs.
Lastly, in the phase that began in 1990 and which is still under way, Olympic Studies Centres (OSC) have been created at various universities or City Councils. The OSC in question is created through an Agreement signed by the Spanish Olympic Committee President, the Vice Chancellor of the respective university or Mayor, and the Spanish Olympic Academy President. The Spanish Olympic Committee-Spanish Olympic Academy loans a list of Olympic titles to the OSC and both contracting parties undertake to organise conferences, seminars and courses on the Olympic movement, proportionally collaborating with the cost. En los términos de difusión olímpica a nivel escolar, la AOE ha editado ocho publicaciones sobre la historia y filosofía del olimpismo, siendo la última Olimpismo y Deporte. Valores y Símbolos, texto que, presentado por el Presidente del COE, Alejandro Blanco, y aceptado en la Asamblea del ACNO habida en Beijing entre el 4 al 12 de abril de 2008, ha sido distribuida a todos los CONs.
Regarding the dissemination of the Olympic movement at schools, the Spanish Olympic Academy has published eight publications on the history and philosophy of the Olympic movement, the latest one being Olimpismo y Deporte. Valores y Símbolos (The Olympic Movement and Sports. Values and Symbols), presented by the Spanish Olympic Committee President, Alejandro Blanco, and accepted at the ANOC in Beijing between 4 and 12 April 2008, which it has been to be distributed to all the NOCs.

Issue of the first stamps on outstanding historic Olympians
Para celebrar el centenario del COE en 2012, cuatro nuevos sellos se gestionaron ante el Servicio de Correos por parte de de la Academia, consiguiéndose tres, uno relativo a Juan Antonio Samarach, valorado como mejor presidente del COI después de su fundador Pierre de Coubertin, otro dedicado a D. Gonzalo de Figueroa y Torres, Marqués de Villamejor, fundador del Comité Olímpico Español, y el tercero asignado a Lucio Minicio Natal, general barcelonés vencedor en la carrera de cuadrigas en los Juegos de Olimpia en la 227 Olimpiada (año 129). Incomprensiblemente, el cuarto que se solicitaba y consagrado a Pierre de Coubertin no se otorgó. Pero en 2013 al cumplirse el 150 aniversario del nacimiento del famoso humanista se renovaron las gestiones, obteniéndose así el tan deseado testimonio insólitamente omitido pese a haberse desarrollado en España importantes eventos deportivos internacionales amén de los Juegos de la XXV Olimpiada en Barcelona en 1992.
To celebrate the Spanish Olympic Committee’s (COE) centennial anniversary in 2012, the academy worked with the Spanish Postal Service (Correos) to issue four new stamps, the first representing Juan Antonio Samarach, considered the best IOC president after its founder, Pierre de Coubertin. A second dedicated to Gonzalo de Figueroa y Torres, the Marquis of Villamejor, and founder of the COE, and the third features Lucius Minicius Natalus, a Barcelona general and winner of the chariot race at the games held in Olympia for the 227th Olympiad (129 AD). Inexplicably, the fourth stamp requested, honouring Pierre de Coubertin, was not approved. However, the following year—2013—for the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous humanist, the academy tried again, and the longawaited stamp was finally obtained. The first rejection was hard to understand, particularly in light of the celebration of important international sporting events in Spain, including for the 25th Olympic Games held in Barcelona in 1992.
El sello en cuestión, singular a nivel mundial entre los de su especie iconográfica (se han emitido 86 sellos sobre Pierre de Coubertin en 76 países, siendo el primero el estampado por Haití en 1939), reproduce la reveladora y expresiva imagen de Pierre de Couertin cuando en 1926 visitó en Nyons (Suiza) la fábrica de Ovomaltine. A su izquierda, y debajo del emblema del COE se representa la histórica arrancada de Jesse Owens en los Juegos de la XI Olimpiada en Berlín en 1936.
The stamp in question, unique on an international level among his iconography (86 stamps have been issued with Pierre de Coubertin in 76 countries, the first was printed by Haiti in 1939), reproduces the revealing and expressive image of Pierre de Coubertin when he visited the Ovomaltine factory in Nyon (Switzerland) in 1926. On his left, and under the COE emblem, Jesse Owens’s historical start at the 11th Olympiad in Berlin in 1936 is depicted.
El nuevo sello con vigencia en la UPAEP (Unión Postal de las Américas España y Portugal) fue calificado por Javier Cuesta, Presidente de Correos, como “el más importante emitido por Correos sobre olimpismo en 120 años”.
The new stamp, which is valid for the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (UPAEP), was rated by Javier Cuesta, president of the Spanish Postal Service (Correos), as the ‘most important issued by Correos on Olympism in 120 years’.
En otro sentido, y como consecuencia de la disposición decretada por Correos el 11 de enero de 2007 que da vía a los sellos personalizados, en esta categoría se emitieron los relativos a Carl Diem y Ioannis Ketseas, pioneros de la Academia Olímpica Internacional, así como otro dedicado a José María Cagigal, el filósofo español del deporte.
On another matter, and as a consequence of the ruling decreed by Correos on 11 January 2007 on personalised stamps, other new stamps issued in this category included those on Carl Diem and Ioannis Ketseas, pioneers of the International Olympic Academy, and another devoted to José María Cagigal, the Spanish sport philosopher.
