Getting Here The Forgotten Coast is located along the Gulf of Mexico in North Florida’s panhandle along the Big Bend Scenic Byway, 80 miles southwest of Tallahassee. The area features more than 700 miles of relatively undeveloped coastal shoreline including the four barrier islands of St. George, Dog, Cape St. George and St. Vincent. The coastal communities of Apalachicola, St. George Island, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, Alligator Point, Indian Pass, Cape San Blas and Port St. Joe are accessible via US Highway 98. By air, the Forgotten Coast can be reached through commercial airports in Tallahassee www.talgov.com/airport/index.cfm and Panama City www.iflybeaches.com/and by private airports in Apalachicola (850) 653-2222 and on St. George Island (850) 927-2312. By boat, on Gulf Intracoastal Waterway from Florida’s West Coast enter at St. George Sound through East Pass, between Dog Island and St. George Island, or through Bob Sikes Cut. From the west, take the ICW through East Bay from Panama City on past White City and continue east through Lake Wimico to the Jackson River, which will lead to the Apalachicola River.

iles of pristine beaches, endless shallow bays and marshes, and fresh water rivers provide great outdoor opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, birding or hiking. Take a guided tour on the Apalachicola River, see the historic waterfront and learn about the role the river has played in our history and economy; then head up Apalachicola River to view the many wild and isolated marshes or take a trip across Apalachicola Bay to one of the barrier islands - St. Vincent Island National Wildlife Refuge, Cape St. George State Preserve and Dog Island. Or rent a boat or kayak and explore the remote bays and inlets where you’ll likely catch a glimpse of a bald eagle overhead or a dolphin swimming in the surf. Land based adventures include trips into the expansive Apalachicola National Forest or Tate’s Hell State Forest. Here visitors can enjoy hiking, birding, hunting and fishing on thousands of acres of primitive forests. Whether you are staying on the beach or touring the historic district in Apalachicola, bicycling is a great way to get around. Bike rentals are available on the beach and in the historic district. Museums, Parks & Theatre
Apalachicola Historic District Over 900 homes, buildings and sites are listed in the National Register District - some dating from the 1830s. A scenic walking tour of the town acquaints visitors with sites such as cotton warehouses, (which housed the City’s once prosperous cotton export during the 1800s), a sponge exchange and Victorian homes nestled amid magnolias. Original materials were salvaged and used in the reconstruction. Now
you can climb the 92 wooden stairs and an eightrung ladder to the lantern room which offers spectacular views of Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Crooked River Lighthouse and Keeper’s House Museum Listed on the National Historic Registry, this 103-foot iron and steel structure was built in 1895, to guide ships through East Pass between Dog Island and St. George Island. Fort Gadsden Historic Site This site played an important role in early US history. Earthen embankments and interpretive kiosk remain today. Located on the east bank of the Apalachicola River, approximately 45 minutes north of Eastpoint, accessed by Highway 65. Camp Gordon Johnston A Treasure of Military History
C
amp Gordon Johnston was opened near Carrabelle in 1941 to train amphibious soldiers during WWII. Originally located east of Carrabelle at Lanark Beach, military experts say the camp provided some of the toughest military training conditions in the world. Camp Gordon Johnston covered 165,000 acres and extended 36 miles along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the territory was left in its natural state for training purposes. St. George and Dog Islands, uninhabited at that time, were used for invasions and amphibious landings. During WWII there were about 10,000 soldiers and civilians permanently assigned to Camp Gordon Johnston. Today, little remains of the original facility where hundreds of soldiers practiced to do battle - but nearby, a museum stands to honor the camp and commitment of its former soldiers. The Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum was founded over a decade ago. Open 6 days a week, the museum is located in the Carrabelle City Complex at 1001 Gray Avenue. t. Vincent Island is a federally protected wildlife preserve located nine miles southwest of Apalachicola. This barrier island was once owned by an eccentric patent medicine manufacturer from New York who used the island in the early 1900s as a game preserve, importing Sambar deer, zebra and other exotic animals. Today the island is a haven for bird and wildlife enthusiasts wishing to experience a truly natural barrier island system. St. Vincent is an important stop-off point in the Gulf of Mexico region for neo-tropical migratory birds. The island is home to endangered and threatened species, including bald eagles, sea turtles, indigo snakes, and gopher tortoises. Wood storks use the refuge during their migration. In addition, the refuge serves as a breeding area for endangered red wolves. There is a St. Vincent Visitor Center located in Apalachicola that provides helpful information about the island. The Refuge Visitor Center is located at 479 Market Street. The island is only accessible by boat; the closest public boat ramp to the island is 22 miles west of Apalachicola at the end of County Road 30-B. However, several tour and charter businesses offer trips to the area.

he port of Apalachicola was established in 1831. Shipping cotton was Apalachicola’s big industry and it soon became the third largest port on the Gulf of Mexico. By the 1850s, the waterfront was lined with brick warehouses and broad streets to handle the loading and unloading of cotton. Steamboats laden with cotton came down the River and were unloaded. Then small shallow-draft schooners (lighters) shuttled the cargo to ships moored offshore. As the railroads expanded throughout the United States, a new industry took shape in the City. Home to large cypress forests, Franklin County developed several big lumber mills in the late 1800s. Lumber magnates built many of the historic homes that line our streets. By the end of the 19th century, harvesting oysters and seafood became an important industry. Today Franklin County harvests more than 90% of Florida’s oysters and 10% of the oysters consumed in the nation. Shrimp, blue crab and finfish are also very important commercially, bringing in over $14 million worth of seafood to Franklin County docks annually.

There are hundreds of acres in Tate’s Hell and the Apalachicola National Forest for hiking, birding, hunting and fishing. Wild flower savannahs and marshes attract outdoor enthusiasts nationwide. It is a place one can truly feel untouched by today’s world. Just across the Bay from Apalachicola or St. George Island, Eastpoint is where many of the oystermen harvest their catch and bring it to processing houses. Oysters are harvested from more than 7,000 acres of public oyster “bars” and 600 acres of private leased bars in Apalachicola Bay. Public bars are divided into “winter” bars, which are harvested from October through June and “summer” bars which are harvested from July through September. There are more than 2,000 people employed by the oyster industry in Franklin County.
Tongers, traditionally called “oystermen”, harvest the oysters today in the same manner they have for a century. From small wooden boats 20-23 feet long, using tongs that look somewhat like two rakes attached in scissor-style, the oystermen bring the oysters to the surface. The oysters are brought on board and sorted on a culling board where they are separated by size. The Bay is carefully monitored to ensure the health and productivity of the oyster beds. As early as 1949, the state was involved in restocking oyster shell into the bay to create new oyster bars. It is estimated that 750 acres of bars have been constructed since then. Eastpoint is also home to the new Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Center, a 5,000 square foot research and nature center in near the foot of the bridge to St. George Island. Apalachicola Bay
The waters of the Apalachicola Bay are among the cleanest and most productive in the nation, yielding seafood landings in excess of $14 million annually in Franklin County. Historically, Franklin County harvests more than 90% of Florida’s oysters and 10 % of the nationwide supply. Oysters make up almost one-third the value of commercial marine landings but shrimp, blue crab and finfish are also important - bringing in millions of dollars worth of seafood to the docks. Noted for their pure, mellow, briny flavor, Apalachicola Bay oysters have been recognized by chefs throughout the country as one of the best tasting oysters and have been recently been highlighted in New York Times and Garden & Gun magazines.
ANERR Visitor Center Offers Learning & Fun
T
he Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) encompasses 246,000 acres making it the second largest of 28 existing in the National Estuarine Research Reserve system. The Reserve is intended as a protective blanket for the fragile wetlands, bays and coastal uplands which fall within its boundaries. In 2011, ANERR opened its new 5,000 square foot research and nature center in Eastpoint near the foot of the bridge to St. George Island. The center, open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, houses many exhibits representative of the coastal ecosystem, popular educational exhibits of the plant and animal life found in this region, and live fish tanks, an oyster boat and natural resource and local history information. The Reserve boundaries include a large section of the Apalachicola River and adjoining floodplains, all or portions of three barrier islands, Apalachicola Bay and associated sounds. Apalachicola Bay, the primary water body, is one of the most productive bays in the country. The bay supports major fisheries for oysters, shrimp, crabs and finfish. Much of the local economy is directly connected to the bay. The Reserve is also one of the most important bird habitats in the southeastern U.S. with more than 315 species. There are also more than 360 species of marine mollusks found in the Reserve and in its near-shore waters; many of these are also endangered. Fifty-seven species of mammals are also found in the drainage basin including the Florida black bear, the West Indian manatee, the Indiana bat and the gray bat. St. George Island St. George Island Cape St. George Lighthouse: An Historic Maritime Beacon
T
he Cape St. George Light, located at the center of St. George Island, is the fourth construction of the historic lighthouse. The first was built in 1833, with reconstructions in 1848, 1852, and 2008. The lighthouse was originally built on the western tip of St. George Island, but was rebuilt in 1848 on Cape St. George. The third lighthouse was built after the hurricane of 1851, and withstood storms, wars, and beach erosion for 153 years. It collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico on October 21, 2005. A succession of Lighthouse Keepers tended the light for more than 100 years, carrying heavy buckets of fuel up the spiral staircase each day, trimming the wicks, and polishing the lenses. During the Civil War the light was extinguished so as not to offer guidance to Federal warships, and the lens was removed from the tower for safe keeping. In a dramatic team effort involving private contractors and local volunteers, the pieces of the Light were salvaged and reconstruction began in the fall of 2007. Original bricks were used on the interior walls, and pieces of the original granite sills and lintels were used in the doorway and windows.
The fourth Cape St. George Light was completed in December of 2008, and stands as a tribute to the commitment of a community to the preservation of its maritime heritage. The Lighthouse, the Keeper’s House Museum and Gift Shop, and the St. George Island Visitor Center are located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of the island.

Surrounding Areas There are many interesting areas to explore within an hour's drive. EAST Alligator Point Located at the eastern end of Franklin County, Alligator Point can be accessed from US Highway 98 and Route 370. The 14,366 acre, Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve, acts as a nursery for the Gulf Coast, serving as a breeding ground for grouper, shrimp, blue crabs, flounder, trout, mullet, snapper, cobia, tarpon, redfish and many more species. Wildlife watching, recreational opportunities, and sight fishing in these waters can be rewarding and challenging. Located 45 minutes east of Apalachicola. Lanark Village Located eight miles east of Carrabelle, the village of Lanark was once home to a fashionable resort in the late 1800s as it was the terminus of the Georgia, Florida and Alabama Railroad. During WWII, the area was known as Camp Gordon Johnston, a military installation that trained over a quarter million men for amphibious assaults from 1942 until 1946. Be sure to visit
the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum in Carrabelle, 1001 Gray Avenue in the city hall complex. Carrabelle Located twenty minutes east of Apalachicola, the town of Carrabelle is a paradise for boaters, with plenty of deep water boat slips and several marinas that offer fuel, provisions, bait and tackle. Don’t miss the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum located at the city complex or the Carrabelle History Museum on Avenue B in downtown Carrabelle. Stop by the Carrabelle Chamber Visitors Center for more information. Ten miles further down the road you’ll stumble upon the Indian Pass Raw Bar, an iconic oyster bar where you get your own beer or coke from the fridge and belly up to the bar for a dozen of Apalachicola’s finest oysters. As you leave the raw bar explore Indian Pass. Serving as the gateway to St. Vincent Wildlife Refuge, this small peninsula divides Indian Lagoon from the Gulf of Mexico and remains one of Florida's best kept secrets. Cape San Blas Cape San Blas peninsula reaches out in an arch to form St Joseph Bay, a shallow clear saltwater bay full of sea life. There are several shops and restaurants on the Cape, plus an inn and plenty of beach homes to rent. Located 30 minutes west of Apalachicola. Port St. Joe Founded in 1835, St. Joseph, later known as Port St. Joe, was a cotton shipping port.
In 1844, the town suffered a hit by a hurricane and tidal wave. Two years later, in 1846, the town virtually disappeared when a yellow fever epidemic killed over 6,000 residents.
