“When life happens” Adaptive reuse of refugee housing

Mas t er P roj e c t & t h e s i s My thesis and master project concerns the study and design approach for the revitalisation of the refugee buildings on Alexandras Avenue. The many signs of life and the sense of neighborhood the complex has, was my inspiration for the way of dealing with these historical buildings. My vision came through the analysis of the ‘vernacular adaptations’ the residents made to the builings in order to adapt their life into their houses. My goal was to preserve the collective character and the co-housing aspect of the complexes, but strengthen it by adding the function of affordable housing and temporary housing. As result, the project could provide shelter for newly arrived refugees and immigrants, in line with the original ambition of the project. The flexibility of the building structure makes it possible to intervene in the interior and change the lay-out of the apartments, which allowed to create a variety of housing

typologies; subsequently the buildings will be able to host people with various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. In general, my focus was on ‘public space’, in which I am proposing the pedestrianisation of the streets and the addition of stairs at the surroundings of the site to avoid car congestion. Additionally, I created private gardens and public outdoor spaces for socialization (e.g. on the rooftops) that could also be used by the children as playgrounds or for gardening. The pursued concept for this master project was to reintegrate the buildings into the city’s urban fabric in which the humane scale of the blocks and the open green spaces in between the blocks are the main advantages in the dense city life of Athens. By reopening the program to contain various collective forms of living and transforming the street level and roofs into public places to gather, the project will win back its positive meaning.

2. Beguinage of Antwerp Mas t er P roj e c t {The beguinage is a housing complex which was created to house women who dedicated their lives for God without retiring from the world, those women were called “beguins”. Beguinages can be found mostly in Flanders ‘north part of Belgium’, the Netherlands and few in France.} Our beguinage, located in Antwerp, is a mixed-type, by the combination of square and street around, designed in Baroque style. It was built in in the 16th, it has faced an invasion by France in the 18th century, reconstructed back in the 19th century and another renovation in the

20th century. The general approach for the revitalisation was to upgrade and make the complex a vital part of peoples’ life, while respecting its history and unique character. After analyzing the site of the beguinage, we came up with the conclusion that it is located close to many educational spaces such as the University of Antwerp and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Therefore, the main goal was to convert the beguinage into a mostly student based community. Young people who study in Antwerp would have to opportunity to live close to their studies and at the same time in a very central location.

Th e S t eppin g S t o n e ( P r e s b y te r y) In the context of transforming the beguinage into a more student based community, the building of the presbytery is used as a student housing. More specifically, it is destined for newly arrived refugee students who seek for accommodation during the transitional period between their arrival in Antwerp and their final settlement. The goal was to create a friendly atmosphere for the users even if it is a temporary solution for them. The building consists of communal spaces in the ground floor (kitchen, dining room, common living room), where students can socialize and integrate. At the same level there are also two student rooms facing the street, one of them suitable for a disabled person. The basement is used as a laundry and storage space while on the first and second floor, the rest student rooms are located. The main intervention is the new volume replacing the west part of the presbytery. The new part functions as a link both between the main building and the courtyard and between the three main entrances.

LIGHT IN THE DARK - BUILDING 18 This project proposes the combination of three functions. As a link with the presbytery, the ground floor of the main building is provided as an art studio for both refugee students and other international of local students. The aim is to create a space where students will share their experiences through art and break down cultural and stereotypical barriers, using it as a unifying language. Alongside, the spaces of the extensions and the basement are used as exhibition spaces. The basement is an important factor for the design concept. The main goal was to expose it and use this

unique, small and curved space as a creative way of exhibiting artworks. It is divided in two parts where the right one is full of natural and technical light, while the left one is a dark space, ideal for projections. The staircase on the courtyard creates an interesting journey for the visitor, starting from the main entrance and ending to the basement. The first and second floors are used as a house for a family. Large openings are created on the east part of the roof, allowing more light to come into the bedrooms.

3. Bus Spot

Fi nal B ac he l o r P r o j e c t

The main subject of the thesis was the design of a set of bus stops for the needs of Athens and its citizens based on ecodesign principles and taking into account the character of the city. The principal goal was the creation of temporary spaces that will emit a familiar environment while providing everything that is needed for its users. The construction must be in harmony with the style and the atmosphere of Athens, and the intense rhythms of the citizens. inspiration The source of inspiration for the design were the traditional ways of shading in the Greek countryside, and the assimilation of their basic design principles, such as the austerity of the figures, and the integration into the surrounding space. The second method of approaching the design of the bus stops is modular design. A module is used, the multiplication of which creates different sets. The size of these sets varies depending on the space and frequency of use.

The basic construction consists of 6 fixed Modular Units including 6 convertible seats and 6 shelters. The metal pipes are the variable component of the structure and act as a support for the fixed units, the information panel on the left and a horizontal glass surface at the top for extra protection against weathering such as rain.On the right side, the pipes act as a frame for the climbing plant and as a parking space for bicycles. In addition, the bus stop is completed with a sign for the station name, and optionally by a ticket machine, a trash bin and an ashtray and seats at the back of the fixed elements. The entire construction is supported on a platform.

Along with the bus stops design, came up the design of public benches. Their design philosophy is identical to that of the bus stop seats. Also in this case, the concept of MODULAR design is being implemented, as according to the two basic design for benches, their multiples have been developed. The main material of the urban furniture is compressed wood responding to ecodesign principles.

4. Dual apartment

Projec t durin g i n t e r n s h i p Located in an old Athenian apartment building in Omonoia, the apartment of 60 sq.m. designed to serve two different uses: 1. A space free of furniture, suitable for hosting small-scale exhibitions 2. A residance that meets the needs of a young couple.

Floor Plan

Section A

Maintaining the bearing structure, the floor tiles and the raw concrete ceiling, a minimal space was created, designed with simple lines and neutral color shades. The kitchen and bathroom have the ability to be covered behind glass or wooden panels creating united surfaces for the needs of an exhibition. In addition, there is a wooden structure in the living area that functions as a raised living room or as a showroom. The basic materials that are used are the wood, the existing grey tiles, exposed concrete and sandblasting.
