SEAN MCKEAN WANTS TO RACE HIS WAY TO THE 2014 APBA HALL OF CHAMPIONS //10

A

s a child, there is nothing more that Sean McKean wanted to do more than race boats.

Sitting on the shore watching his idols zip past him, McKean was always anxious to get on the water. "I would always sit on the beach and critique the racers and ask why didn't they do this or why did they do that," McKean said. "It was just natural when you are around it all your life." When McKean was twelve-years- old when he first got behind the wheel of a boat, his first race, which was an OSY Western Divisional, McKean took first place. McKean then went onto his second ever race where he ended up winning an OSY Eastern Divisional Title. From then on, McKean was on the water as often as he could be. Learning the ropes as a child, it took McKean 19 years to earn his first induction into the APBA Hall of Champions. From 1999 thru 2012 McKean was inducted three total times into the APBA Hall of Champions and this year he is hoping to make it number four. "I am going to get my resume together and give it one try. If it doesn't happen in 2014 then I won't try again," McKean said. "My number is T -4 and if I make it this year it will be my fourth induction and it will be my first time since in my dad passed away, and there is the reasoning." Starting his campaign for the 2014 APBA Hall of Champions off right, McKean, from Mabank, Texas, made the journey up to Oroville, Calif., to try and make history. On March 15th and 16th McKean became the first person to set multiple % mile records in the PRO Category. Setting PRO % mile records in 500-Hydro at 57.655 mph,700-Hydro at 104.773 mph and llOO-Hydro at

101.351 mph; McKean is off to a fantastic start to the season and hopes to keep his momentum going. Toward the end of the season McKean is planning to improve on those numbers and break his own records as he heads up to the Pacific Northwest to Lincoln City, Ore. "I ran what I could in California but believe me those motors are already getting shipped out to get worked on," McKean said. "The initial records aren't where they should be. We set the number and now we can get serious and go after it. "I have a motor that is so special that I didn't run it in California and I am saving that motor for the Nationals in Kingston, Tenn., and the Devils Lake World Record Run because we are going to make those % miles respectable. I promise you that." With plans to make his way to Kingston for the PRO Summer Nationals, McKean is hoping to run all three of his T -4s

(500-Hydro, 700-Hydro and llOO-Hydro) to help make him achieve his Hall of Champions Dreams. In order to reach his goal, McKean is going to have to do all the racing he can and have a little luck come his way. "Last year there weren't enough boats to have a capsule boat race in Kingston. If everything works out this year, there should be enough to crown a National Champion. I have to win the Nationals and I have to set more records," McKean said. "Probably the best boat racer I ever saw was H -4, Dan Kirts and M -4 was Eddie Thirlby and he was pretty dominant in the runabout classes. It seems everywhere you see a four you see them winning and I want to continue that trend this year. "Getting into The Hall would mean a lot. My father and I were a great team. There is no guarantee I get in but if! can do this it would me a lot to me."

As afourth generation racer, Marlee Hill, from Fountain Valley, Calif., has spent her entire life around power boat racing. However when first given t~e opportunity to race a boat Hill shied away. Today Hill competes in several different Stock Outboard Classes and she has even taken a leadership role as a Stock Outboard Commissioner. Question: At what age did you start boat racing?

Marlee Hill' I am a fourth generation driver so it is in my blood but I started racing when I was 11. My dad asked me when I was nine if I wanted to start racing and I told him no way. My cousin Chad was running 45s at the time and I saw him race and I thought my dad wanted me to drive one of those. Then he asked me again a couple of years later and this time I thought I would try it out. Well, it turns out that my uncle Ron had already bought a boat and two motors and it was already on the way to the house when my dad asked me if I wanted to drive. About 20 minutes later a boat showed up to the house and we went testing that weekend with Ernie, Steven and Tammy Dawe.

Q: How important is the family aspect of boat racing to you? MH: I feel like boat racing has definitely brought our family closer together. Since I've been racing, my cousin Chad is the only other Hill who had been racing at the time and he quit racing four years ago and I have been the only Hill racing in our family since then. It was great and it still is at my races because it brings the family together and everybody is always at every race and they all come out to every race just to watch and help out and be a part of the pit crew. It

was actually pretty cool because in my first 45 race, I ran in Chad's old boat with his number and him as my crew chief. That meant a lot to me. Boat racing is just a great family sport.

Q: What kind of preparations have to take to race in a new class? MH: We have done a lot of work. We had a race in Parker last season and since I pretty much grew up watching Chad race I always wanted to be like him and hopefully get into the bigger boats one day. At that time I hadn't been to San Diego and seen the Unlimiteds and I saw Chad as the big guy in racing and I saw that as a place I would like to get someday and I didn't think it would happen this quickly. In Parker I was asked if! wanted to drive a 45 by Chuck Skelton and I couldn't turn it down. Mter I raced there I got a call from Bill Reiter and he asked if! wanted to drive a 45 full time. This boat Bill bought was from my cousin Chad and Chad was the original owner, so I am getting the chance to drive my cousin's old boat and that's really cool.

Q: What is the one piece of advice that you have received in your career that you still carry today? MH: I have heard this and seen it from this person and it has actually really inspired me. Watching Mike Pavlick race and his

children race over the past couple of years, I honestly have never ever seen anybody work so hard on a race boat and his equipment. He's shown me to pretty much never give up and no matter how bad things might seem, if you just keep working hard enough at it then it can work in your favor. You just have to have a little luck and a lot of hard work.

Q: What is your favorite boat racing memory? MH: When I went up to Cullaby in 2012, it was the end of June and Tammy Dawe had just passed away and I had gotten a call asking if! would do a memorial lap for Tammy at the Cullaby race in Oregon. I couldn't turn it down and my cousin John Peeters who lives in the Seattle area, I called him and I asked him for help because I didn't know what to do because I couldn't drive up to Seattle in a day and I didn't have a boat. He said no problem, and at that point I have only driven an A-Hydro, J -Hydro and an AX-Hydro. I was still 18 and John asked if! had ever driven a 20-Hydro, I said "nope but I've always wanted to." He said "perfect. That was Tammy's main class so we're going to throw you in my 20-Hydro." It was awesome to first go up there and do a memorial lap for Tammy with Kelly Hannon, it was an honor. Second to be able to have such a great opportunity to just call somebody and say I'm coming somewhere and that person having enough faith in me to take care of their equipment and just say "here." I don't think I did too bad that race, I think I finished fourth. It was definitely a great trip and probably one of my favorites.

Let's Do the Math WRITTEN BY / / JAN SHAW SCORING COMMITTEE MEMBER This month the subject is Mathematics, in particular adding together two heats of racing, and converting, when necessary, the times to the correct minutes, seconds and onehundredths of seconds. It seems that a lot of people, who used to get these correct, have been getting them wrong this year by not doing the conversions correctly. Many of us are using the scoring programs, so the conversions are done for us, but we still need to know how to convert seconds to minutes, and onehundredths of seconds as well. Remember, there is only 60 seconds in a minute, so when you add times to break those ties, 70 seconds, needs to be 1 minutes 10 seconds. The same holds true for onehundredths of a second.

3:38.41 6:70.77 -there is no such thing as 70 seconds- anything 60 and over becomes another minute So this becomes 7:10.77 Another example: 3:38.20 2:59.20 5:97.40 - 60.00 (Take away 60 seconds, add 1 minute) 6:37.40 This may look confusing, but remember if there are 60 or more seconds in the seconds column you must convert 60 of the seconds into a full minute, adding a full minute to the minute column.

Converting the seconds to minutes: The following is taken from the scorer's test 3:32.36

Another problem that pops up occasionally, someone wants a speed from a time. The information is on the last page of the

scorer's handbook. Remember to change your minutes to seconds, etc. and then divide by the formula according to the course size. 2 minutes becomes 120 seconds, 3 minutes becomes 180 seconds, and 4 minutes becomes 240 seconds and so. So 2.57.13 becomes 175.13 divided by 18000 for a 5 mile course size = 102.7807 MPH 2.57.13 120 175.13 seconds Convert minutes to seconds so take away the minutes and replace with seconds and then add together Hope this helps when the racing gets tough.

REGION 5 We have been very busy in "southern" Region 5 since early March. The Orange Cup Regatta had a perfect weather weekend and that made a lot of people very happy. Entries from seven Inboard classes and four Stock and Junior classes came south. Some people saw the weekend as a fun race and the chance to do some early testing under race conditions. Others came to break records. No one was disappointed. There was lots of sunshine, no wind and two records were broken. National Modified has a new record at 102.087 mph Driver: Thorn Heins, Media, PA., Owner: Budget Buster Racing, Cinnaminson, NJ. ... NM30, Big Bird by Pennzoil.

1-Liter Mod has a new record 86.575 mph Driver: Dan Kanfoush, Grand Island, NY. Owner Jim Sechler, Farmington Hills, MI. ... Y-l, Fast Eddie Too. I really want to thank Stephen Pink for all the great pictures taken over the weekend. Stephen's Dad, Dean, was the Race Director along with Gene Engle; and his Mom, Lucia was part of the scoring team so I knew Stephen would be there the whole weekend. I also knew from previous years that Ryan Berlin would be calling me asking for pictures of the event for the next Propeller Magazine. Then Stephen showed up on Friday morning with the fanciest camera I have seen in years. So with Stephen standing there I called Ryan and put Stephen on the phone to work out the details. I know some of his pictures are featured in the May Propeller and my

heartfelt thanks go to Stephen for a job well done. Region 5 is also hosted the Stock Outboard and Modified Outboard Winter Nationals. Glad to see they are back running in Jessup, GA. Also on the schedule was the Stuart Sailfish Regatta on the Intracoastal Waterway in Stuart Florida, weekend of May 16-18. The host hotel is a few short blocks from the ocean so for all of you who have been frozen all winter came to Florida, raced their boats, brought their swim suit and went for a swim too. It was a jam-packed weekend with nine Inboard classes scheduled, Special Events/H350, four OPC classes and the PI division. ' Written as of 4/ 112014.

Dayton testing, the annual rite of spring for 10 these many years. Well, it's a good thing we had it this year again, because it brought spring to the Region! Just a less than two weeks before, Detroit got its last snowfall for the season (I hope), broke the all time record that stood since 1881 (this excerpt from last month's report: although at this writing, we are supposed to get three inches of snow in Detroit to "celebrate" tax day. It happened, the one time the weather guy was right.) Rumor in Michigan was that the USCG would have to reactivate the icebreaker MACKINAW to send to the Hydrobowl to open it up. Well, besides the logistical problem of reaching the Hydrobowl, the calm, clear waters of Dayton Ohio said 'nothin' doin', we're ready!' No ice. No flurries. No howling northwest gale. Just spring. According to highly respected sources, 35 boats took advantage of the test weekend. A couple small outboards, a tunnel boat, a bunch of vintage inboard hydros, and a bunch of inboard racing hydros took to the course, countered by the APBA Inboard School Boot E-8 5-litre stock. That boat ran 110 laps on Saturday alone, without a whimper, a belch, or even a sigh. Sunday brought another sixty laps of full throttle education. The students all looked good out there, must have been some rigorous schooling going on the night before! Mark

REGION 8 With race season finally here, it often seems that race season can't get here soon enough but when it finally does arrive everyone seems to be scrambling to get ready and wishes they had more time. Or perhaps that's just me ...

Paul Poledink and Sandy Ross relocated some ballast,John Bridge got the benefit with fine rides in the White Lightning.JB and Water gives both a run for their money in the looks department! Lil Miss Hillwinds made plenty oflaps with Billy Noonan and others on board, if you wanted to see a vintage fleet, shoulda been there! Inboard: Jeff Sankuer's Modern Drummer is smoothing out the rolls and riffs, look out, that boat is faster again this year. The Kreitzer / Frickert S-juggernaught (S17 and S-67 Impossible Dream) were warming up the waters, with Tony K. celebrating year #27 (happy birthday, Tony!) before he goes back to work in southern Texas (he's so far south it takes nine hours driving to reach a state border!). Jennifer Falcinelli put herself and brother Rich through the prep ringer the weeks before testing, paid off with flawless runs in her S-55, looking way faster than last year!

Preparation means more fun at the track! All winter, we have all wondered what was happening with Stover, the Hire Voltage was (and still is for sale, that is the wood one). Well, the real story was broken out Saturday morning for all to see, as what was the E-75 of Tom English is now Stover's new Hire Voltage. Stover and Colby both looked good out there, just flyin' along! Drives a little different, too, according to both. Whether anyone realizes this or not, they are a definite threat to win the Nationals at the Qyake in July! Welcome back to Jamie Wilson, who brought his newly acquired 2.5L mod Staudacher (with outboard fin, fuel injected 2300, methanol and all) and turned some real nice laps on Sunday. Big boats? A couple. The One Way of Cadi Reiss found its way to Dayton, giving pilot Kevin Kreitzer some fun laps. The surprise though, was Calvin. He found his way to Dayton from his newer digs in Cleveland, bringing not only his fast G NH41 Too Hot, but picked up Jimmy Deel for a surprise outing along the way to Dayton. Cal looked fine, looks like nothing lost from last year, fast as ever. And Jimmy, feisty and friendly, like always. Absolutely great to see him, hey Jimmy! Check the schedule for your June events. Walled Lake Thunder 14-15June2014, we are all looking forward to the first Inboard Region 6 event! Let's go Racing!!!!!

In May, Region 8 held capsule training at the Lino Lakes YMCA. The Twin Cities powerboat Association had a great turnout of 25 people for capsule training and six of which were first-timers, we had people coming as far as Kansas and Wisconsin. They also had seven rescue crew members in attendance three were from the Cannon Falls, Minn., rescue crew and two from the

Crosby, Minn., rescue crew. The two rescue boat drivers also went through Capsule training so they know what the drivers were experiencing in a blow over or a crash situation.

Steve Walde, the current holder of the APBA % mile Sport C speed record, has already reserved a hotel room and will be making the trip to Oregon to compete.

to team up with some of our Sport C guys and share the boat hauling chores. Now all we have to do is talk Rick Ciandro, Mike Breslin and Bobby Joe Finkbohnner in to signing on to head the Great Northwest.

Lance De Steffens is also packing his gear and making ready to attend the race in Newberg. Rex "Rocket" Bothell has agreed

We won't have Mike "Mike Big" Biglow for a while because he recently had some

He's hoping to be back in the boat in time for the second Minden Race which is scheduled for October 11-12. Let's hope so for his sake. Jean MacKay Schwartz is working with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District to put on a display of East Bay Boat Club Outboards for the first Rancho Seco Solar event scheduled for May 17-18. The event itself will feature solar powered boats designed and built by students under the

tutelage of an educator or parent. Two categories will be featured. One is made up of students from 7 through 12 grades inclusive and a collegiate class made up of students from community college and university. The objective of the Northern California Solar Regatta is to give students an opportunity to design and build solar powered boats and to learn about renewable energy through solar as well as to initiate dialogue about energy efficiency and conservation.

Frank Banducci is back into his cardiorehab program with renewed and invigorated zeal since his Cardiologist has given him the green flag to return to racing. (Now who will volunteer to convince his three daughters? ... a daunting task fit for only the brave of heart ...just short of "mission impossible"!) That's 30 for now
