Taiwanese politicians on Monday mourned the death of Lee Kuan Yew (‫ޕ‬٠ᤌ), the founding father of Singapore, praising his leadership and his role in international politics. In a statement issued by the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), KMT Chairman Eric Chu (‫مڹ‬଩) said his party is "deeply saddened" by the passing of Lee and expressed his condolences to Lee's family and the people of Singapore. "Singapore became an economic miracle under his leadership, and has successfully played an important role in international politics," said Chu, who is also mayor of New Taipei. Chu described Lee as a longtime friend of the KMT and said Lee's ideas and practices inspired him during visits he made to Singapore in 2009 and earlier this year. Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesman Cheng Yun-peng (ᔤሎᣛ) also quoted DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (ᓐ૎֮) as describing Lee as an "outstanding" politician of the modern era. Tsai said Singapore became a vibrant economy under Lee's leadership and that his contributions will be remembered, Cheng said. Former President Lee Teng-hui (‫࿆ޕ‬ᔕ) praised the former prime minister for leading the Singaporeans in their efforts to build an independent nation, calling him "a precious asset to Singapore."

He ruled Singapore with an iron grip for three decades until 1990 and is credited with building Singapore into a global business and financial hub with a low level of corruption.

Under his leadership, Lee said, Singapore became head of the Four Asian Dragons, i.e., Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, all newly industrialized economies which achieved prosperity in the 1980s.

New technology to turn solar industry waste for steel production Taiwanese PC maker Taipei, March 26 (CNA) National Cheng Kung University (NCKU, ‫ګ‬ ‫פ‬Օᖂ) on Thursday announced that its innovative process that refines solar industry waste into raw materials for steel has been awarded with a patent. NCKU said that the sludge waste created by the solar industry must be processed by the waste disposal companies specializing in either liquid or solid form. While ethylene glycol can be extracted from the liquid portion and sold as fuel, solid waste materials often have no other disposal methods than being buried at landfills. Chen Wei-sheng (ຫ೛ᆣ), an assistant professor at NCKU's Department of Resources Engineering who led the development effort said that the process involves the use of physical, chemical or diversified treatment methods to extract reusable silicon and carbonized silicon from waste sludge. NCKU said that as conventional solid waste processing is extremely costly and technically complex, it has been abandoned by the majority of waste disposal and reprocessing companies. Chen said that the new process can reduce the

impacts of the glut of sludge waste produced by Taiwan's booming solar power industry. Chen noted that while the reclaimed materials may become the additives in producing ceramics, glass and other fire-resistant products, and mostly importantly, steel.

NCKU said that it has transferred the technology to a local waste disposal company, effectively "turning silicon sludge into gold." (By Chang Juang-hsiang and Ted Chen)

Getac sees Windows 10 release to fuel rugged PC replacement Taipei, March 25 (CNA) Getac was founded in 1989 as a joint venture between U.S.- based GE Aerospace and MiTAC Inc., the thirdlargest computing group in Taiwan, to supply defense electronic products.

Taiwan's Getac Technology Corp. (壀ഗઝ‫)ݾ‬, the world's second-largest rugged computer maker, said Wednesday that the release of Windows 10 operating system later this year will fuel replacement in the rugged PC market.

The government is also evaluating the feasibility of hiring workers from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, he said.

In the initial stage of the program, about 100 to 200 Myanmar nationals will be brought to Taiwan to work on a trial basis, Liu Chug-chun (Ꮵ ࠋၫ) said while answering reporters' questions at the Legislative Yuan. The experimental program could be implemented at the end of April or early May at the earliest, he said. If the plan is fully carried out, it will be the first time ever that Taiwan hires workers from overseas for agriculture purposes, Liu said. Most of the migrant workers in Taiwan at present come from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, and they are mostly employed in manufacturing or as domestic helpers and caregivers. Liu said people in Myanmar share similar religious beliefs and lifestyles with people in Taiwan, making them a good fit in the local economy. At the same time, many Taiwanese businesses
