Ambiguous Republic Ireland in the 1970s

DIARMAID FERRITER KEYNOTE A major appraisal of the crucial decade in Ireland's recent history SALES POINTS Author is world reknowned A major study of a significant time period in Irish history based on newly released documents DESCRIPTION

REVIEWS ‘Praise for The Transformation of Ireland: 'This will be an influential book, and is a remarkable achievement’ - Guardian ‘This is one of the most important books to be published this year’ - Irish Independent ‘This is a landmark book, full of insight and intelligent judgement’ Colm Tobin

'Hard-nosed scholarship and moral passion underpin Diarmaid Ferriter's work.' Now he turns to the key years of the 70s, when after half a century of independence, questions were being asked about the old ways of doing things. Ambiguous Republic considers the widespread social, cultural, economic and political upheavals of the decade, a decade when Ireland joined the EEC; when for the first time a majority of the population lived in urban areas; when economic challenges abounded; which saw too an increasingly visible feminist moment, and institutions including the Church began to be subjected to criticism. Diarmaid Ferriter's earlier books have been described as 'a landmark' and 'an immense contribution'; making 'brilliant use of new sources'; 'prodigiously gifted', and 'groundbreaking'. All those words apply to this important book based on recently opened archives and unique access to the papers of Jack Lynch and Liam Cosgrave. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Diarmaid Ferriter is Professor of Modern Irish History at University College, Dublin. His previous books include The Transformation of Ireland 1900-2000; Occasions of Sin and Judging Dev. In 2010 he presented the RTE TV series The Limits of Liberty.

REVIEWS ‘Truly remarkable ... both as a narrative and in its extraordinary use of language. It reminds one of The Catcher in the Rye, but it`s better-sharper, funnier, and more poignant’ - Walker Percy ‘A remarkable book ... there is not a line that simply slides by; each, in one way or another, turns things to a fresh and unexpected angle. There are splendid things said’ Richard Eder, Los Angeles Times ‘Sly, pungent, lyric, funny, and unlikely to be forgotten’ - R. Z. Sheppard, Time

Simons Everson Manigault ('You say it "Simmons". I'm a rare one-m Simons') lives with his mother, an eccentric professor known as the Duchess, on an isolated strip of South Carolina coast. Convinced that her son can be a writer of genius, the Duchess has immersed Simons in the literary classics since birth and has given him free rein to gather materials in such spots as the Baby Grand, a local black nightclub. Although possessed of a vocabulary and sophistication beyond his years, Simons feels the normal adolescent bewilderment about the behaviour of his parents. His conventional father, the Progenitor, has recently left the family in a dispute over Simons' upbringing and has moved to nearby Hilton Head, where he would like to see his son raised in the orthodox surroundings of condominiums, country clubs and private schools. So the Duchess brings in Taurus, an enigmatic father-surrogate who tutors the boy in the art of watching the world without presumption.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Padgett Powell's Edisto was nominated for the US National Book Award. He teaches writing at the University of Florida.

Everything is Nice The Collected Stories of Jane Bowles

JANE BOWLES KEYNOTE Definitive edition of Jane Bowles' stories, with a biographical note and photos SALES POINTS Reviews in national book pages, women's magazines and style press, focusing on Jane Bowles as a cult figure of the 1930s and 40s, with stunning photos Jane Bowles has high profile literary fans, including Ali Smith and Jeanette Winterson This is a definitive edition, bringing together, for the first time, all Jane Bowles' stories DESCRIPTION REVIEWS ‘Readers who've not yet read Jane Bowles are almost to be envied, like people who've still to read Austen or Mansfield or Woolf, and have all the delight, the literary satisfaction, the shock of classic originality, the revelation of such good writing, still to come.’ - Ali Smith ‘No other writer can consistently produce surprise of this quality, the surprise that is the one essential ingredient of great art. Jane Bowles deals almost exclusively in this rare commodity’ - John Ashberry

Jane Bowles wrote very little: just one perfect novel, Two Serious Ladies, a play, In the Summer House, and the dozen or so stories collected in this volume. But it was enough to establish a reputation as one of the twentieth century's most original fiction writers. From the title story where an American woman is led to a house in a 'blue moslem town' by a veiled woman with porcupines in her basket, to Camp Cataract, a Colorado-based tour de force of middle-class claustrophobia and dread, Everything is Nice takes you into an edgy and exhilarating, tragicomic world. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Jane Bowles (born Jane Auer, 1917) grew up in New York City, where as a teenager she became part of a bohemian, bisexual scene, along with the writer Paul Bowles. The pair married in 1938, somewhat impulsively, as both primarily pursued samesex relationships. They were nonetheless devoted companions, living in Tangier, Morocco, in adjoining apartments. At the age of 40, Jane Bowles suffered a debilitating stroke, which brought an early end to her writing. She died in 1973.

Fear GABRIEL CHEVALLIER KEYNOTE A rediscovered - and controversial - classic of war literature SALES POINTS Comparable to All Quiet on the Western Front in its depiction of the horror and futility of war Semi-autobiographical novel based on Chevallier's experiences fighting for the French during the First World War An international bestseller by the author of Clochemerle DESCRIPTION

REVIEWS ‘Gabriel Chevallier, best known for his magnificent novel Clochemerle, has used his experiences during World War I to produce a work of great intensity, comparable to such great literary masterpieces of the period as Henri Barbusse's Under Fire’ - Daily Mail ‘There are enough flashes of intense colour and incident to make this translation a worthwhile exercise’ Toby Clements, Sunday Telegraph

Print Book ISBN: 9781846687273 First World War Fiction BIC: FJMF 01 November 2012 £8.99 320 pp Paperback B format 198mm x 129mm World ex USA,Can eBook ISBN: 9781847656438

It is 1915. Jean Dartemont is just a young man. He is not a rebel, but neither is he awed by authority and when he's called up and given only the most rudimentary training, he refuses to follow his platoon. Instead, he is sent to Artois, where he experiences the relentless death and violence of the trenches. His reprieve finally comes when he is wounded, evacuated and hospitalised. The nurses consider it their duty to stimulate the soldiers' fighting spirit, and so ask Jean what he did at the front. His reply? 'I was afraid.' First published in France in 1930, Fear is both graphic and clear-eyed in its depiction of the terrible experiences of soldiers during the Frist World War.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Gabriel Chevallier was best known for his satirical novel, Clochemerle, which was first published in 1934, subsequently translated into twenty-six languages, and went on to sell several million copies. Born in Lyon, Chevallier was called up at the start of the First World War and wounded a year later. He later returned to the front where he served as an infantryman until the war's end. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre and Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. La Peur (Fear), which was first published in 1930, draws upon his own experiences and forms a damning indictment of the war. Chevallier died in 1969. Serpent's Tail published the paperback original [9781846687266].

Illiam Dhone: Patriot or Traitor? The Life, Death and Legacy of William Christian

JENNIFER KEWLEY DRASKAU SALES POINTS Story of celebrated figure in Manx history Expert insight into history and traditions of the Isle of Man Published to mark 350th anniversary of protagonist's death Illustrated throughout

DESCRIPTION In the Isle of Man, the name of William Christian of Ronaldsway (known as 'Illiam Dhone' by his fellow countrymen even today) still resonates with drama and controversy 350 years after his hurried execution. The fate of this seemingly obscure 17th century Manx official sent shock waves far beyond the shores of his island home, unexpectedly provoking the wrath of King Charles II and rocking the English legal system to its foundations. William Christian was the most trusted employee of the Earls of Derby, the feudal lords of the Isle of Man, yet in the turmoil of the English Civil War this loyal servant surrendered the Island to Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces. Was this the action of a traitor, or of a patriot, defending the Manx people and their traditions? Or was he simply an opportunist, motivated by nothing nobler than selfinterest? Illiam Dhone briefly flourished under Cromwell, but mysterious setbacks and allegations (of embezzlement, plotting a coup and even impregnating his own illegitimate daughter) dogged him until the Restoration, when the new Earl of Derby took revenge and put him on trial. Although a 'silver-tongued orator', Illiam refused to plead and was shot by a firing squad. This intriguing story casts fascinating light on the little-known history and traditions of the Isle of Man, which underpin its unique relationship with England and the UK today.

Jassim - the Leader Tribesman, statesman and father of a nation

MOHAMED A. J. ALTHANI KEYNOTE The little-known story of the creator of the modern state of Qatar SALES POINTS First biography of a little-known but influential figure Expert insight into history and traditions of the Gulf Published in time for Qatar National Day (18 December)

DESCRIPTION The Gulf state of Qatar tops the Forbes list of the world's richest countries. In 2010, the country had the world's highest GDP per capita, and its reserves of oil and natural gas are vast. It has been estimated that Qatar will invest more than $120 billion in the energy sector over the next ten years. Yet Qatar has climbed to this pinnacle of wealth and influence in a remarkably short time, and from a starting point of obscurity and insignificance. This astonishing transition is the direct result of the efforts nearly 200 years ago of one visionary man - Jassim bin Muhammad Bin Thani, known as 'the Leader'. Qatar in the 1830s was a fragmented region, a desert peninsula without security or borders, where coastal communities depended on pearling for survival, while constantly at the mercy of tribal raiders. Jassim's background in this precarious environment led to his understanding that the gap between tribal settled peoples must be bridged, and then to his harnessing of regional conflicts to create a unified Qatari state. Skilfully allying with Ottoman forces to fend off the British, Jassim established power in the newly rebuilt capital, Doha, eventually becoming the first leader of the new country.

Little known outside Qatar, Jassim's extraordinary achievement cannot be understated. By the time of his death on the eve of the First World War, both the Ottomans and the British had recognised Qatar's autonomy, and the way was open for the country he had created to move steadily forward to its enviable economic position today. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Shaikh Mohamed A. J. Althani was born in Qatar in 1962 and took a degree in industrial management from Central Michigan University. He worked in the oil and gas industry from 1985 to 2002. From 2004 to 2006 he was the Qatari Minister for Economy and Trade. He now runs a range of businesses involved in private equity, oil consultancy and construction. He is a member of the Middle East advisory board of the London Business School.

‘Praise for The 48 Laws of Power

Around the globe, people are facing the same problem - that we are born as individuals but are forced to conform to the rules of society if we want to succeed. To see our uniqueness expressed in our achievements, we must first learn the rules and then how to change them completely.

Essential rules for the new Machiavellis’ - Daily Express ‘The year's surprise bestseller will doubtless appeal to all armchair megalomaniacs’ - Daily Mail ‘Beguiling ... literate ... fascinating ... a wry primer for people who desperately want to be on top’ - People ‘Machiavelli has a new rival, and Suntzu had better watch his back’ - New York Times

Charles Darwin began as an underachieving schoolboy, Leonardo da Vinci as an illegitimate outcast. The secret of their eventual greatness lies in a 'rigorous apprenticeship': by paying close and careful attention, they learnt to master the 'hidden codes' which determine ultimate success or failure. Then, they rewrote the rules as a reflection of their own individuality, blasting previous patterns of achievement open from within. Told through Robert Greene's signature blend of historical anecdote and psychological insight and drawing on interviews with world leaders, Mastery builds on the strategies outlined in The 48 Laws of Power to provide a practical guide to greatness - and how to start living by your own rules. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Robert Greene is author of The 48 Laws of Power (9781861972781), The 33 Strategies of War (9781861979780) The Art of Seduction (9781861977694) and The 50th Law (9781846680687). He has a degree in Classical Studies and has been an editor at Esquire and other magazines. He is also a playwright and lives in Los Angeles.

Napoleon Symphony ANTHONY BURGESS KEYNOTE A new edition of Burgess' long unavailable, ambitious, experimental novel about Napoleon Bonaparte SALES POINTS Published to coincide with Burgess' radio play on BBC Radio 3 This new edition brings back into print a long unavailable work by one of the great British novelists 'One of the cleverest and most original writers of his generation' - The Times DESCRIPTION REVIEWS ‘Essentially this book is not so much about Napoleon as about Anthony Burgess writing a novel. As such it has many pleasures. All of the Burgess embellishments are here, and they sing alluringly each to each’ - New York Times ‘One of the most productive, imaginative and risk-taking of writers’ - Irish Times

A grand and tragi-comic symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, this novel unteases and reweaves Napoleon's life - from the first great days of his campaigns in 1796 to exile and death on St. Helena a quarter of a century later. Burgess' Bonaparte is a cuckold, afflicted with heartburn and halitosis while enacting a wily seduction of Tsar Alexander, conquering Egypt and crowning himself Emperor. Witty, sardonic, intellectual, Napoleon Symphony is Burgess at his most challenging and inventive. In creating a novel based on a musical form, Burgess is playing with structure, from the grand, ambitious shape of the novel itself, through to the finer composition of each sentence.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) was a novelist, poet, playwright, composer, linguist, translator and critic. He is best known for his novel A Clockwork Orange, but altogether he wrote thirty-three novels, twenty-five works of non-fiction, two volumes of autobiography, three symphonies, more than 150 other musical works, reams of journalism and much more.

Raffles And the Golden Opportunity

VICTORIA GLENDINNING KEYNOTE The first biography in decades of the 'Father of Singapore' SALES POINTS A fascinating biography of an neglected subject by one of Britain's leading biographers Raffles led an extraordinary life and dabbled in many fields - and his name endures today in the world famous luxury hotel in Singapore Victoria Glendinning is a highly-respected biographer - certain to attract wide publicity Full colour illustrations

REVIEWS ‘Praise for Trollope 'Majestic, capacious, compelling and clear-sighted’ - Daily Telegraph

DESCRIPTION Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) was the charismatic and persuasive founder of Singapore and Governor of Java. An English adventurer, disobedient employee of the East India Company, utopian imperialist, linguist, zoologist and civil servant, he carved an extraordinary (though brief) life for himself in South East Asia. The tropical, disease-ridden settings of his story are as dramatic as his own trajectory an obscure young man with no advantages other than talent and obsessive drive, who changed history by establishing - without authority - on the wretchedly unpromising island of Singapore, a settlement which has become a world city. After a turbulent time in the East Indies, Raffles returned to the UK and turned to his other great interests - botany and zoology. He founded London Zoo in 1825, a year before his death. Raffles remains a controversial figure, and in the first biography for over forty years, Victoria Glendinning charts his prodigious rise within the social and historical contexts of his world. His domestic and personal life was vivid and shot through with tragedy. His own end was sad, though his fame immortal.

Michael Haag's new book is a radical reassessment of the Crusader period and the role of the Templars - entirely at odds with such historians as Thomas Asbridge (BBC The Crusades) Michael Haag is author of the bestselling Templar title, The Templars: History and Myth [9781846681530], with over 40,000 copies sold Readers have an insatiable appetite for titles on the Templars - and the Crusades which are given a controversial new perspective in this compelling narrative The tale of the Templars is - as the title says - a classic tragedy, and a terrific story 20 illustrations included

DESCRIPTION In 1187, nearly a century after the victorious First Crusade, Saladin captured Jerusalem. The Templars, headquartered on the Temple Mount, were driven from the city along with the Frankish population. The fall of Jerusalem was a turning point, the start of a narrative of desperate struggle and relentless loss. In little more than a century Acre would be destroyed, the Franks driven from Outremer, and the Templars themselves, reviled and disgraced, would face their final immolation. Michael Haag's new book explores the rise and fall of the Templars against the backdrop of the Crusader ideal and their settlement venture in Outremer. Haag argues that the Crusader States were a rare period when the population of Palestine had something approaching local rule, representing local interests - and the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin was a disaster. He contends that the Templars, as defenders of the Crusader States, were made scapegoats for a Europe whose newfound nationalism caused it to withdraw support for the Crusader venture. Throughout, he charts the Templars' rise and fall in gripping narrative, with their beliefs and actions set in the context of their time. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Michael Haag has written widely on the Egyptian, Classical and Medieval worlds. He is author of a dozen books, notably Alexandria: City of Memory, a definitive study of Cavafy, Forster and Lawrence Durrell in the city, and of The Templars: History and Myth.

First collected by his devoted family and colleagues as a 75th birthday present, The Unpublished David Ogilvy collects a career's worth of public and private communications - memos, letters, speeches, notes and interviews - from the 'Father of Advertising' and founder of Ogilvy & Mather. Still fizzing with energy and freshness more than 25 years after it was first published, its success outside the private circle of friends and colleagues it was created for was, in the words of one of its editors: 'because so often he spoke out on important matters long before the crowd caught up to him; because all of what he says, he says so well; because so little of what he says in the book had ever before appeared in print'. It includes The Theory and Practice of Selling the AGA Cooker, described by Fortune magazine as 'the finest sales instruction manual ever written', and an interview in which he makes disclosures that even long-standing associates had never heard before. This is a business book unlike any other: a straightforward and incisive look at subjects such as salesmanship, management and creativity, presented in his trademark crisp prose. Whether carefully prepared for a lecture or as a private joke to a friend, his writing always underlines the importance of the rule, 'it pays an agency to be imaginative and unorthodox'. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY David Ogilvy CBE is often described as the 'Father of Advertising'. Before founding New York agency Ogilvy & Mather in 1948, he pursued several career paths, working as a chef at the Majestic in Paris Ritz, an AGA salesman and a farmer. His iconic campaigns include legendary adverts for Dove, Hathaway, Rolls Royce and Guinness. He died in 1999.

Despite his stature, no one has attempted a definitive biography Terrific sales of almost 10,000 of the £30 hardback to date [9781846680106] The authors have made numerous newsworthy discoveries about Van Gogh's life, based on previously untranslated letters - their argument about his death not being suicide made headlines all around the world Naifeh and Smith have signed an agreement with the BBC to produce a multipart series on how they wrote the book - a ten-year full-time project employing two full-time translators and four full-time researchers using new software they created to fuly exploit the new digitisation of the letters Selected for the 'New York Times 100 notable books of 2011' and a New York Times bestseller, and Leo Jansens, curator of the Van Gogh Museum and principal editor of Vincent van Gogh: The Letters described it as 'the definitive biography for years to come'. DESCRIPTION Vincent van Gogh created some of the best loved - and most expensive - works of art ever made, from the early The Potato Eaters to his late masterpieces Sunflowers and The Starry Night. He had worked as an art dealer, a missionary and as a teacher in England, and only in his late twenties did he begin a life that would be fundamental in shaping modern art. But when he died in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890 at the age of thirty-seven he was largely unknown. Written with the cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum, Pulitzer-winning authors Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith recreate his extraordinary life, and the inside of his troubled mind, like never before - and they put forward an explosive new theory challenging the widespread belief that Van Gogh took his own life. Drawing for the first time on all of his (and his family's) extensive letters, which offer exquisite glimpses into his thoughts and feelings, this is the definitive portrait of one of the world's cultural giants. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Gregory White Smith and Steven Naifeh are the authors of the Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Jackson Pollock (the basis for the film Pollock), which was also a finalist for the National Book Award and a NYT bestseller.
