Bits & Tips UCF Equestrian Team Montanna L. Freeman As a follow up to last month's college edition which featured the UCF Huntseat Team, the university also has two other Equestrian teams: Western and Dressage. The western team which competes in IHSA alongside the huntseat team finished fifth in their region, an accomplishment the team is proud of considering their small size of only seven riders, four of which were freshmen. Despite their underdog status, two of the seven riders managed to qualify for Regionals; Freshman Katie Laughman, placed third in Beginner Horsemanship, and sophomore Shelby Eldridge (captain), placed first in Open Horsemanship. Shelby will now compete at the IHSA Semi's at University of Findlay in Ohio on March 26th and 27th. She will be the first rider UCF has ever sent to the IHSA western Semi's and her team wishes her the best of luck. The Dressage team also finished out their season on a high note, finishing in third place in their January 30th IDA show, hosted by UCF at Ashmore Equestrian Center and then receiving reserve high point team at their last two IDA shows hosted by Florida State University, where Freshman rider Livvy Risner earned the title of high point rider for the day! This was the Dressage Team's first season showing under new coach Ali Collier-Harvey of Turning Point Equestrian Centre, and they are pleased with their success this season and are eagerly looking forward to competing next year. The team is now focused on working together with the other universities in their region in preparation for nationals, which are being hosted this year by the University of Florida at Canterbury Equestrian Show Place and will take place April 30th through May 1st." Washington International Horse Show Signs Three-Year Deal With Verizon Center The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), the leading indoor championship horse show in the country, is pleased to announce a three-year deal with Verizon Center to extend its run at the Washington, D. C. venue through 2013. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS since 2000. The 53rd annual Washington International Horse Show will take place October 25-30. “We are thrilled to remain at Verizon Center and continue this great Washington tradition. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS for 12 years, and while there are complexities in producing an urban horse show with shipping horses in and out of the city and closing city streets to create stables, it also makes us one of the most exciting horse shows in the country,” said Anthony F. Hitchcock, chief operating officer of WIHS.“The Washington International Horse show has been a prominent, annual event for the arena,” said David Touhey, senior vice president and general manager of Verizon Center.“We’re excited to be able to extend our relationship for another three years and continue to provide the community with another fun and entertaining family show that features world-class equestrian competition.” Verizon Center is located in the popular Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., close to museums and restaurants and within walking distance of the National Mall. Averaging 220 events per year, the arena is home to three professional sports teams and one college team including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics and the Georgetown Hoyas. The arena also hosts a variety of concerts, family shows and worldclass sporting events. “We have unique standing in the equestrian world, being the last great urban indoor horse show in the nation, and it is our goal to continue to ensure Washington is a ‘mustattend’ event for the equestrian world and the Washington, D.C. community,” said Juliet W. Reid, president of WIHS.WIHS highlights include the WIHS Equitation Championship Finals for the top junior riders in the country, Kids’ Day with free pony riders and activities for children, Barn Night, the Puissance high jump, and the $100,000 President’s Cup Grand Prix, where top horses and riders, including Olympic medalists, Compete for the President of the United States Perpetual Cup, donated to the show in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Edgar Schutte , President of the American Hanoverian Society, Speaks to the Sunshine Sporthorse Assocation! On Saturday, March 19th 2011, members of the Sunshine Sporthorse Association (SSHA) had the privilege of meeting Edgar and Susan Schutte, owners of Rainbow Equus Meadows.Edgar and Susan made the trip from their farm in Sacramento, California to see one of their fine stallions, Baron Van Gogh, show at HITS in Ocala, FL.Edgar, who is the newly elected President of the American Hanoverian Society, spoke about his breeding

program and personally introduced us to Baron! Edgar, originally from Holland, moved to the US over 20 years ago where he met his wife Susan and slowly became more involved with Hanoverian breeding. Since then, he and Susan have been fine-tuning their breeding program breeding 20-25 mares a year and standing some of the most accomplished stallions in the United States. They strive to always improve type and quality with focus on conformation, movement and temperament. Edgar looks for “just the right amount of spark” in his mares and stallions. His efforts have made a significant change in the development of jumpers here in the United States. “Mare matching is the key to producing excellence”. He recognizes the amount of time, money and effort that goes in to every breeding and Believes that pairing the right stallion with each mare is the key to continuous improvement. He combines jumping pedigree with stallions that have bold movement and a good temperament to produce horses that anyone can raise, train, show and enjoy. As breeders we need to realize that a good life for a horse is one in which they are useful and attractive to people.Everyone needs to know and understand their role in that horse’s life and owners need to realize and show the potential of their horses. We need to better connect and increase efforts to link people together. We must all work together to strengthen the relationship between breeders and the performance world. The Rainbow Equus Meadow’s philosophy is “it’s important to love what you do and love the horses you breed and produce.” www.RainbowEquus.com International Equestrians Unite To Raise Funds & Awareness For Children In Need At a WEF Dinner Benefit Wellington, FL – Olympic show jumping legend Margie Engle and international children's charity founder Liliane Stransky joined forces For the Step By Step Foundation's second annual All In For Charity Poker Tournament and dinner benefit on March 13th. Although Engle, the 10 X AGA Rider of the Year had placed ahead of Paulo Santana in the $231k FEI World Cup Grand Prix the night before, the Brazilian show Jumping veteran was not to be denied in the All in for Charity Poker Tournament!Daniel DiPicoli, Adolpho Franco, Cesar Almeiea, Gustavo Amorin and Santana made up Team Brazil . When all hands were in, it was grand prix champion Santana who was named the numero uno player, winning the Step By Step All In For Charity Poker Tournament. "To have great riders like Jimmy Torano and Margie Engle behind our charity is a real honor. Their support and assistance makes all the difference when it comes to raising awareness and spreading our message to the equestrian enthusiasts. As we all know, the horse show world is truly an international one, and our goal is global. We want to enhance the lives of underprivileged children worldwide by creating and supporting sustainable health, education, and wellness programs. We do this, literally step by step, donation by donation, rider by rider!" Meet Jessica from Ocala: Hi, I am Jessica Ohanrahan & I'm a 14 yr old freshman. I've been riding since I was 2 and do the hunters & jumpers.I currently train with Scott Keller, who I began working with at HITS last year. I learned an awful lot in only 3 days and he's responsible for making me the rider I am today. When we met, I wasn't having fun & was losing interest in riding. Then, we turned my crazy large pony into a Pony Jumper and showed all throughout the 2010 HITS Ocala circuit and were circuit champions.

Is the End Near? I'm watching a pivotal Supreme Court case in Pittsburgh, and wondering if this is the beginning of the end of property tax exemptions for nonprofit organizations. The case will decide whether the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust must pay local real estate taxes on properties it owns but has not developed. Property owned by nonprofit organizations is generally exempt from property tax, or the tax basis is held at a very low level. In Pittsburgh, according to the City Council budget, one-third of property in the city is tax-exempt, while the city is facing an ever-shrinking tax base and rising costs. As the city struggles to meet its obligations, it seems that they are seeking ways to tap a potential $70 million in property tax revenue currently out of reach. Read more...

Ultimate first-aid kit
The USA Equestrian Trust is accepting applications for grants to nonprofit equine organizations to be funded in 2011. Despite the continued economic struggles, the trust's board granted nearly $US135,000 to seven applicants in 2010.
Recommend
Horses can be very accidentprone, so a well-equipped equine first-aid kit is a wise investment. Here's what you need to put one together.
Be the first of your friends to recommend this.
Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, equestrian land conservation, and educational programmes. The trust welcomes applications for need-based and means-tested worthy equestrian projects and encourages applicants to detail those in their applications. Funds available for grants include $US77,000 reserved for Hunter and Jumper not-for-profit purposes or programmes in California and Nevada. Applicants for this fund should make clear their intention to apply for funds available from this specific reserve.

The trust has made several improvements to the online application process this year. All applicants must submit a proposed budget for their project as a wordprocessing document. Questions about applying? Please e-mail grants@trusthorses.org. All grant applications must be submitted no later than May 2. Mailed applications MUST be postmarked by May 2. No late applications will be considered. To learn more about USA Equestrian Trust and/or its grant programme, go to http://www.trusthorses.org.

The federal "Recreational Trails Program" (RTP), was created through the National Recreational Trail Fund Act (NRTFA) as part of the Intermodal Surface Transporation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) and re-authorized by the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). This program provides funding assistance for acquisition, development, rehabilitation and maintenance of both motorized and non-motorized recreation trails. By law, 30% of each states' RTP funding must be earmarked for motorized trail projects, 30% for non-motorized trail projects and the remaining 40% for multi-use (diversified) motorized and non-motorized trails or a combination of either. The RTP program can provide up to 80% federal funding on approved projects and requires a minimum 20% non-federal funding match. Applications for grant assistance must be received by IDNR no later than March 1 of each calendar year. Awards are generally announced within 180 days following the application deadline date. Examples of eligible project activities include: • • • •
trail construction and rehabilitation; restoration of areas adjacent to trails damaged by unauthorized trail uses; construction of trail-related support facilities and amenities; and acquisition from willing sellers of trail corridors through easements or fee simple title.

E. Allan Buck Files Grievance to Allow Bitless Bridles in Dressage Competition Submitted by Allan Buck The opportunity to stand our ground in the protection of the health and welfare of our horses is at hand. An exciting time has come for horsemen and horsewomen to line up in the famous cavalry charge and defend our rights and the rights of our horses. We as Americans have the opportunity to unite horse people all over the world by showing the way. On May 16th through the 18th of 2011, the USEF Hearing Committee will be addressing a grievance filed by E. Allan Buck regarding failure of USEF to enforce the Mission Statement and rules regarding the health and welfare of the horse. This grievance is predicated upon USEF Board of Directors and Dressage Committee refusing to allow bitless dressage for the 'second' time. To see the grievance text in its entirety please visit www.hartetoharte.org and click on the button that says USEF Grievance. The 'willful, knowing, intentional' refusal by USEF to allow individuals to compete their horses in any venue using equipment they know benefit's the health and welfare of their horses is in violation of the all that USEF stands for. The'willful, knowing, intentional' refusal by USEF to regulate licensed competition judges in such a manner as to demand said judges enforce all of the rules as stipulated presents an unfair field of competition for those riders who wish to meet the criteria set forth in the stipulated rules. Mr. Buck is allowed to present affidavits in support of the rule change to allow bitless competitors predicated upon the health and welfare of the horse. And such affidavits should also support the enforcement of 'all' rules, regulations and especially the Mission Statement. Such affidavits with full name, address and telephone number, can be sent in PDF format to spirit bridle@yahoo.com. It would most helpful to receive donations

Jenny Karazissis has a Rendezvous with Victory at the LAEC Opener Horse Show (press release provided by LEG Up News) Jenny Karazissis started out 2011 in the ideal way, with the victory in the first USHJA National Hunter Derby on the West Coast. She piloted Rendez-vous (Kimberly Narlinger, owner) to the win in this class at the LAEC Opener Horse show (Jan 21-23). Jenny has been a force to reckon with ever since the USHJA derbies started a few years ago, and with the advent of new USHJA National Derbies at 3'0", even more horses and riders have an opportunity to compete in these special classes. Recently imported from Europe, the five year old Holsteiner gelding handled Chris Collman's well designed courses with aplomb. After a spook in the first round the pair earned a 75, but they came back decisively in the handy phase. The course started out with a hand gallop directly to the first fence, followed by a roll back to second fence with options of how tight a track a rider wanted to take. Jenny was moderately conservative on the roll back, and she took all four high options to finish with a score of 87 and the win. "I was so pleased," Jenny said. "It was late in the afternoon, so you worry about the shadows and the horse spooking, but it could not have been better. He was listening and rode so beautifully, and I couldn't be happier. The class was a good way to get to know him better." She plans to move the gelding into the First Year Green Hunter section and is keeping an eye on the USHJA International Hunter Derbies for the talented Rendez-vous. Tommi Clark and Kamari (Raquelle De La Rocha Bussel, owner) finished second. Kamari competed in the First Year Green Hunters last year and this year the gelding has stepped into the Junior Hunter section. Deirdra Davis captured third with Lacora (Morgan Dickerson, owner) after posting a score in the 80s in the handy round. Georges Bittar was thrilled with his last minute decision to enter Raphael when the gelding captured fourth in his first time in the hunter ring. "He shows in the jumpers and does well, but he also jumps so nice I knew he would do great," said Georges. Not only was Jenny pleased with her success, but also with that of her student, 15 -year-old Molly Peddicord, who took home several first and second place ribbons in her equitation rounds aboard Loupino. Molly won the CPHA Foundation Equitation Class and had second place finishes in the USEF, WCE and LAHJA Junior Medal classes. At the end of last season, Molly transitioned to the 3'6" medals after winning both local based LAHJA Rosewood Finals and the national based THIS National Children's Medal National Finals (Capital Challenge Horse Show, Maryland. Since then, she has been busy practicing riding without stirrups and looking forward to the start of the 2011 season. "She'll do extremely well; she's a great student with a wonderful horse," Jenny added. While Tommi Clark was happy with her performance on Kamari in the derby, she was also happy with Kylee Arbuckle's rides on the talented gelding in the Small Junior Hunters where they captured the show championship. "He's a really cool horse and so much fun to ride, so I'm really thankful to Raquelle and Tommi for giving me the opportunity to show him," Kyle explained. "I'm planning on showing him at Thermal and I'm really excited about it. Kamari is an awesome horse and I had a blast on him." The Childrens Hunter Championship went to 12-year-old Sydney Hutchins (Jim Hagman, trainer) after emerging victorious in each of her jumping classes and earning second place in the under saddle with Cappuccino. Sydney also was a success in her equitation classes, earning blue ribbons in the Onondarka and LAHJA Rosewood medal classes. "He hasn't been doing equitation for that long, and he's really brave and honest to the jumps," Sydney said. This will be her first year focusing on riding only horses after several years of riding ponies. "I would like to place in the top four in the Onondarka finals this year, because this is my last year in it."

Lucy Davis Wins Back-to-Back Grand Prix to Cap Off Sold-Out Week at HITS Desert Circuit During the biggest week of the 2011 HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal, California Amateur rider and rising star Lucy Davis of Los Angeles, California went two for three when she won Sunday's $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard Old Oak Farm's Hannah to close out Desert Circuit V. After an incredible victory in Saturday night's $50,000 HITS CSI-W Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, which saw Davis get the best of some of the top riders in the sport, she came back less than 24 hours later to beat 57 other starters to capture the blue ribbon for the second day in a row. "It feels really awesome to win two Grand Prix classes in less than 24 hours," said Davis, who is 18 years old, with a blindly bright future in show jumping. "Next week is the big $200,000 class, so I hope I didn't use up all of my good fortune." Good fortune indeed. Davis can also add to her accolades for the week the fact that Sunday's class had the largest starting field of any Grand Prix to date at the HITS Desert Circuit since the show moved to the property in Thermal. In fact, blessed by another beautiful week of weather, last week's show was the biggest the Circuit has seen since its opening season at the new property in 2007, and everything was sold-out. The stalls, VIP seating in both the Oasis Club and the Charles Owen Club in the indoor arena, and paddocks were all at full capacity, as the HITS Desert Circuit enjoys a thriving winter show season heading into the final stretch.

Scholarship for an agriculture major and the Frankel Scholarship, in honor of the late hall of fame trainer, Bobby Frankel, sponsored by his estate. The RFE will continue to offer the Thoroughbred, ASHADO, KEEP and Washington Thoroughbred Scholarships, as well as the Winner's Circle Program scholarship for third-year equine veterinary students. On a sad note, the Fleet Indian Scholarship will be renamed the Olivia M. Saylor Scholarship in memory of RFE board member, Paul Saylor's daughter who was tragically killed in a fire on New Year's Day, 2011. To further our mission of enabling young people of equine industry families as well as those who want to pursue an equine-related or agricultural career, $40,000 has been committed to the Horse Farm Workers' Educational Assistance Fund for scholarships in Kentucky and $80,000 has been committed to the New York Youth Outreach Program, the Kentucky Youth Outreach Program and a partnership with the Belmont Child Care Association's Anna House to offer a program that benefits elementary students in the Elmont, New York area. Scholarship application deadline for most scholarships is Monday, February 28, 2011. For further application information contact the RFE office at (859) 252-8648 or go online to www.raceforeducation.org. The Race for Education provides educational programs and college scholarships to young people in the equine and agriculture industries with significant financial need. The majority of their students come from high need, low income backgrounds. The Race for Education not only offers financial support for these students, but also mentoring, tutoring, and partnership support to ensure students are receiving the support and educational skills they need to be successful. posted February 2, 2011

Submit Your Grant Proposal to USA Equestrian Trust RELEASE: April 14, 2011 AUTHOR: Diane DeRosa
Lexington, KY — Grant applications continue to come in to USA Equestrian Trust (USAET) but there’s still time to submit a proposal. All not-for-profits are invited to apply by going to the web site at http://www.trusthorses.org/grant/request.html to fill out the online grant application. The deadline is May 2 at 5 p.m. EST. Past recipients of grants include those doing equine health research, equestrian land conservation, and educational programs. The Trust welcomes applications for need-based and means-tested worthy equestrian projects and encourages applicants to detail those in their applications. Funds available for grants include $77,000 reserved for Hunter and Jumper not-for-profit purposes or programs in California and Nevada. Applicants for this fund should make clear their intention to apply for funds available from this specific reserve. “Whether you have a small project or larger goal, if you are a not-for-profit it’s worth the effort to apply,” commented Alan F. Balch, USAET President. The Trust has made several improvements to the online application process this year. The revamped form includes a review page on which applicants can both proof and edit their applications before submitting. All applicants must submit a proposed budget for their project as a word processing document. Applications cannot be submitted without one. If you have any questions about applying, please e-mail grants@trusthorses.org. All grant applications MUST be submitted no later than May 2. Mailed applications MUST be POSTMARKED by May 2. No late applications will be considered. To learn more about USA Equestrian Trust and/or its grant program, visit the web site at http://www.trusthorses.org. ENDS

Apr 16, 2011 "How to do dressage" with Oliver Townend USA ou've gotta love Oliver Townend, and not just because he has sandy-red hair and chiseled features. This video really is entitled "How to do dressage" --he talks a little about sitting trot, a little about bending/suppleness, etc. It's worth a watch, and not just because he is easy on the eyes... Apr 16, 2011 Photograher captures the magic of birth USA Even when people are lucky enough to be present at the birth of a foal, the drama of the occasion can overshadow what is often the most precious moment: when the mother first connects with her newborn arrival. Photographer Lisa Miller, from New Hartford, New York, became interested in documenting foal births in 2010 after a friend mentioned she had two pregnant thoroughbreds. She was not prepared for the incredible intimacy that some of those images captured. "I thought it would be fun to document a foal birth through photography," she recalls, "and even though the idea of hanging out in a cold barn in the middle of winter didn't thrill me, the idea of being present during these births did. Apr 14, 2011 Controlling Horse Ringworm and Rain Rot Skin Diseases USA A horse’s skin is constantly under attack by a wide variety of viruses, bacteria, and biting insects. Symptoms of skin diseases can range from a simple, isolated skin lesion to generalized itching and hair loss over the entire body. Two of the most common varieties of skin diseases are ringworm, also called dermatophytosis, and rain rot, which is also known as dermatophilosis. Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus, not a worm. It spreads between horses thorough the use of common grooming tools, saddle pads, or harnesses. Also, damp, dark, and crowded conditions (such as horses confined to their stable during the winter and fall) can predispose horses to contracting ringworm. More info... Apr 14, 2011 Horses and the Drinking Issue Florida In addition to being large animals horses will often drink a lot. Depending on the weather and their activity horses can drink between six and ten gallons of water a day. However, horses can also drink and urinate excessively from several diseases both common and uncommon. A condition known as polydipsia is one common condition that has several causes. Another condition common among horses, humans and dogs is Cushing’s disease. It is usually caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland and is also referred to as pituitary dependent hypoadrenocorticism. In horses the signs of this condition include long, shaggy, wavy coats that do not shed during the summer; excessive thirst along with excessive urination; high blood-sugar levels; bulging eyes and a pot bellied appearance while having muscle loss in the back. Older horses and mares are most likely to get this disease. More info... Apr 13, 2011 Yes, Your Horse is Fat USA Horse owners are often warned about the dangers of equine obesity and encouraged to help overweight horses drop a few pounds. But to solve this problem they must be able to acknowledge it in the first place. According to the results of a recent study completed by a group of researchers in the U.K., one of the biggest challenges posed by equine obesity could be that owners don't recognize their horses are overweight. "Obesity is a problem in horses; as horse owners we need to be aware of this and learn how to recognize it," said Sarah Freeman, BVetMed, PhD, CertVA, Cert VR, CertES, Dipl. ECVS, MRCVS, associate professor of Veterinary Surgery at the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, in Leicestershire. More info... Apr 12, 2011 Horse aggression linked to chronic pain A link between chronic back pain and aggression in horses has been discovered by French researchers. The study team said it was known that sudden or severe (acute) pain was known to increase the risk of aggressive or violent behaviour in humans and animals. However, to their knowledge, their findings provide the first experimental evidence of such a link between persistent and long-lasting (chronic) pain and aggression. More info... Apr 12, 2011 Carry two spare tyres, horse owners urged USA Equestrians should consider carrying an extra spare tyre when trailering animals, according to the operators of a roadside assistance programme for horse owners.Equestrians should carry two spare tyres, a roadside assistance specialist says. USRider points out that the roadside is a dangerous place to be, especially with horses on board. Managing member Bill Riss said horse owners should try to minimise time on the roadside, and one way is to carry a second spare tyre when trailering horses. Statistics show that tyre failure is the most common cause of roadside disablements. More info... Apr 12, 2011 Conquering the canter? USA It's a little shaky (and I'm not talking about the footage), but here it is. Canter transitions, lots of'em, in both directions. Again, it felt like I was flying but when I see the video I realize how much work there is to do. First order of business is to stabilize my hands. More info...
