"National Geographic Image Collection" at National Geographic, 1145 17th St. NW. (image: events.nationalgeographic.com) The Washington International Horse Show is at the Verizon Center, 601 F Street NW: “Horse-crazy or not, if you like championship sport and fast-paced entertainment and fun, this is the event for you. An equestrian tradition since 1958, the Washington International Horse Show brings top horses and riders from the U.S. and abroad, including Olympic champions, to the nation’s capital to compete for more than $400,000 in prize money and championship titles. About 500 horses participate in show jumping, hunters, equitation and dressage events during the six-day show. Special exhibitions, shopping in more than 50 specialty boutiques and new this year, Washington’s World of the Horse on Sunday afternoon, round out this family-friendly show.” “Pam Ann Live,” plays October 26 at the Lincoln Theatre, 1215 U Street NW: “Following the huge success of her sold-out European and Canadian tours earlier this year, A-List hostess to the stars Pam Ann announced she will touch down for her first USA tour in five years. I am coming to the USA to bring fabulousness back to flying”. Pam Ann is the alter-ego of Australian comedienne Caroline Reid. Reid’s portrayal of a gutsy and glamorous air hostess is unique and wildly hilarious. “National Geographic Image Collection” is at the National Geographic Museum, 1145 17th Street NW: “Brand-new LED lightboxes around the exterior of the Museum showcase National Geographic’s extraordinary photography from an archive containing more than 11.5 million images. Alexander Graham Bell, National Geographic’s second president, declared the Society should cover “the world and all that is in it.” The Image Collection reflects that mandate, covering every corner of the globe, showcasing cultures and human exploration as well as the Earth’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes. The collection also offers a history of the evolution of photography, ranging from early black-and-white photographs and delicate color Autochromes to cutting-edge digital photography. While many of the images have been seen in National Geographic publications, an equal number are rarely seen or have never been published.”

About Tonight - DCist

About Tonight MUSIC: Head to The Red & The Black for an inexpensive show (only $6) and catch Austin trio Ume, Louisville's The Fervor, and Greensboro's The Bronzed Circus. Doors 9 p.m. Or check out the folk-rock stylings of Deer Tick at the Black Cat's backstage, with not one, not two, but three openers. The show is actually sold out, but you can always skulk around the Red Room and try to buy someone's extra. 8:30 p.m. ANIMALS: The Washington International Horse Show is back at the Verizon Center, filling the air around Chinatown/Penn Quarter with its unmistakable scent. Tonight's big ticket events include the Adult and Children's Hunter Championship, which probably means something specific to people who know about horses. We might wait until tomorrow night for the more self-explanatory Jumper competition, but why choose? Tickets range from $20-$50 for reserved evening events seating, through the weekend (or $15 for daytime events only). MOVIE: The AFI Silver is showing Second Skin, a documentary about the online world of Massively Multiplayer Online games (think World of Warcraft, Second Life and Everquest). The film explores the lives of the real people who populate these virtual spaces, whether they be multimillionaires, bored teenage kids in a far off land, or lonely housewives. Photo by primplan Also note: free T-shirts will be given away to the first 100 guests, and filmmakers Juan Carlos and Victor Pineiro-Escoriaza will both be on hand for a q&a after the screening. 7 p.m. TALK: Serious pop culture geeks will want to head to Politics & Prose tonight for a discussion between The New Republic's film critic, David Hajdu, and its literary editor, Leon Wieseltier. Hadju is promoting his new book, a collection of essays called Heroes and Villains: Essays on Music, Movies, Comics, and Culture, and will join Wieseltier in a discussion of some of the subjects of the book, which include Elmer Fudd, Woody Guthrie, Ray Charles, and others. 7 p.m. By Sommer Mathis in Arts and Events on October 20, 2009 3:55 PM

WASHINGTON―Crowds of horse enthusiasts of all ages and fans of international equestrian sports attended the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), Oct. 24. Ads by Goog Olympic medalists and national equestrian team members competed on some of the finest horses in the world during Saturday's highlight event, an FEI World Cup qualifier, the $100,000 International Open Jumper class President's Cup Grand Prix. Three contestants had a clear course in the initial round which led to a jump-off against the clock: Mario Deslauriers on

Vicomte D, Kate Levy and Lirving du Volsin, and Todd Minikus on Alaska. The first round proved to be an upset for two-time Olympic medalist and last year's cup Winner McLain Ward. Ward faulted with a bit of bad luck despite an otherwise smooth performance. With two faultless performances in the jump-off by Minikus and Levy, victory became a matter of not only perfect execution but of shaving off the time. Minikus rode to a faultless victory on Callie Seaman's Alaska with a strategy that treated onlookers to a show of grace as well as speed, finishing the course in 34.55 seconds. Regarding Alaska, the champion of multiple grand prix events, Minikus said that the horse is still gaining experience and that the first word that comes to mind when riding Alaska is "Quality." Minikus delivered his success on Saturday despite an injury that he said was quite painful.

GREEN & GLOVER: Horsin’ around (The Washington Times) Posted in Filmmaking News 06Oct By Stephanie Green and Elizabeth Glover The wife of filmmaking giant Steven Spielberg, actress Kate Capshaw, was spotted over the weekend at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, where the couples’ daughter Destry, 13, was a competitor in the Capital Challenge Horse Show. We can expect to see more offspring of the rich and famous across the coming weeks at the Washington International Horse Show, which will be held at the Verizon Center Oct. 20 through 25. Bruce Springsteen’s daughter, Jessica, and New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s daughter Georgina are both listed as qualified to compete at the show, which is typically one that is not to be missed by the country’s best equestrians. City boy In other horsey news, we hear Joseph Leo Bwarie — electrifying music lovers at the National Theatre as Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys,” the Tony Award-winning musical about 1960s hit makers the Four Seasons — will sing the national anthem at the Virginia Gold Cup, an international steeplechase race, on Oct. 17. A native of the Garden State, Mr. Valli never forgot where he came from. We hope when Mr. Bwarie shows up, he’ll be in character. Those Virginia bluebloods need to be put in their place by a tough talkin’ Jersey guy. Halloween culture If you’re the cultured sort, you might want to break from the pack and have an artsy costume for an upcoming Halloween party. The Washington National Opera is opening its closet for the first time in six years for the Costume and Prop Sale, also on Oct. 17.

FYI: David O’Connor, Olympic gold medalist and president of the U.S. Equestrian Federation, and Custom Made will be honored with induction into the Eventing Hall of Fame at the awards dinner on Dec. 5 during the U.S. Eventing Association’s annual conference, celebrating its golden 50th just around the corner in Reston. Sinead Halpin trained for nearly a year with Olympic medalist William Fox-Pitt at his headquarters in the U.K., which obviously prepared her for the “dirty weather” at Fair Hill. Unfazed by mud and rain, she placed fifth with Manoir de Carnevale in the CCI***. Sharon White and Rafferty’s Rules finished seventh in the threestar. Search Archives: Go More Search Options >>

In the two-star, 80 started but only 27 completed. Karen O’Connor piloted All Star to a double clear on the cross-country for fifth place. Lillian Heard and Share Option took sixth; Ashley Kehoe (Purcellville) and Magic Man finished 11th; and Lauren Kieffer (Middleburg) partnered with Ultra Tim for 13th.

Hunter/Jumper Stars & ‘Angels’: The Washington International Horse Show honored two horsemen with induction into the WIHS Hall of Fame: * Herman Greenberg served for more than 20 years on the board with unflagging commitment, influencing the evolution of this top national indoor show with his vision and guidance. * Betty Oare has competed, judged or attended WIHS ever since its debut in 1958 - a “perfect attendance” record, so to speak.

This Warrenton-based fox-chasing show rider can be found every Labor Day at the Warrenton Horse Show and every June under the oaks at Upperville Horse Show. At both shows, Betty and her trainer/brother, Bucky Reynolds, present horsemanship awards in honor of their father, J. Arthur Reynolds. Betty and husband, Ernest M. Oare, also sponsor classes, most recently the Amateur-Owner Over 35 division at the National Horse Show, where Ernie also serves on the board. NHS debuted in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, moved to Meadowlands, N.J., outside the Big Apple, then to Florida, and now takes place in Syracuse, N.Y. Virginia Fout lives on the West Coast, where she runs V Productions, but she’s very connected to the Middleburg area. She returns often to visit family and friends as well as to ride. In honor of her parents, Eve and Paul Fout, Virginia helped to sponsor the Amateur-Owners 18-35 Hunters at the National Horse Show. Mimi Abel-Smith couldn’t have been happier when Katherine Newman capped her first year as a professional on the circuit by winning the 2009 Emerging Pro Challenge at the Capital Challenge Horse Show aboard Daydream. Katherine also shows Abel-Smith’s jumper, Chellapo Z. She turned pro after a successful junior career, which included earning individual gold in show jumping at the 2007 North American Junior & Young Rider Championships. Eric L. Straus Joins Executive Leadership as CEO of Washington International Horse Show

The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), a leading national equestrian event based in Washington, D.C., since 1958, is proud to announce the appointment of Eric L. Straus as the Chief Executive Officer. Straus joins the executive leadership of WIHS–Juliet W. Reid, President, and Anthony F. Hitchcock, Chief Operating Officer–as the show prepares for its 51st edition in October. “I’m excited about joining the Washington International Horse Show, a championship event rich in equestrian tradition with an economic impact in Washington, D.C., exceeding seven million dollars. I look forward to becoming part of the team building for the future,” said Straus. Straus comes to WIHS with proven expertise in both for-profit and not-for-profit environments. Straus also brings unique experience in the sports entertainment industry including equestrian competitions, Olympic events, marketing, operations, sponsorship development and financial operations. “His diverse professional experience is an important asset to us as is his knowledge of the equestrian world. I feel he is the perfect person to help lead us into the next 50 years,” said Reid. Most recently Straus served as Senior Vice President for The Clark Estates, Inc., New York, NY, a family office whose clients include the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers’ Museum, Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and The Otesaga Hotel and Resort among other properties. On the equestrian side, Straus has extensive experience as an organizer of hunter, jumper, dressage and combined training competitions. He is an active licensed official serving as a USEF judge, steward and FEI show jumping steward. Straus is the FEI Honorary Chief Steward General for Reining and has officiated at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2002 and 2006, and will serve in the same position at the upcoming WEG in Lexington, KY, in 2010. He was Chief Judge for Modern Pentathlon at the 1996 Olympic Games and the 1987 Pan American Games. Straus is a Trustee and Executive Committee member of the American Horse Council in Washington, D.C., and is Secretary and Executive Committee member of the U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation. He also served as Executive Director of the American Horse Shows Association (now USEF) in 1996-1997. Having served as Chief Executive Officer in turnaround situations and created marketing strategies leading to improved financial performance, Straus will look to increase awareness, audience and sponsorship for the show. “Eric brings a

Even Rolling Stone is throwing rocks at the Browns coach. In its latest issue, the iconic music magazine stepped outside its usual arena with a harsh critique of Mangini, comparing him to Augustus Gloop, the fictional overeater in Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and calling his short coaching tenure in Cleveland "a sort of Hurricane Andrew of football mismanagement." Besides being slammed for the Browns' record (1-5), Mangini, who was fired last year by the Jets, has taken heat for mishandling the team's quarterbacks and for excessive fines levied on players.

Jessica Springsteen The 17-year-old daughter of rock-and-roll legend Bruce Springsteen is one of the leading junior riders at this week's Washington International Horse Show. In her competitive discipline, equitation, riders are judged on their form, style, and grace through a series of technical challenges. In the past year, Springsteen has won two of the most prestigious equitation awards and is favored to win a third Saturday. "She has a beautiful ability to concentrate and stay focused and take the sport seriously," said her trainer, Stacia Madden of Beacon Hill Show Stables. "Some people have the talent but don't work at it. Jessica is not one of those people. She chooses to work at it." This article appeared on page B - 2 of the San Francisco Chronicle

Riding on a dream By Carolyn Callison Murray - cmurray@thesunnews.com

You might think this is just a "local girl makes good" story. That would be a mistake. Sure, Darley Newman's PBS documentary travel show "Equitrekking" won two EmmyE-MAIL awards this year. But it's the path she took from Porcher Street in Myrtle Beach to the Emmy stage thatPRINT provides a classic COMMENTS (0) script for how hard work, the courage to follow a dream and good timing can add up to an enviable RECOMMEND (0) success story.

TEXT SIZE: That script began when she moved to Myrtle Beach with her mother, brother and sister to be close to her grandmother. She lived just two blocks from the beach while attending elementary and middle school here.

"I loved it," Newman said. "I was always outside doing something at the beach. ... I rode my bike around everywhere."

Favorite ride? | "There are so many favorite locations for different reasons: Costa Rica ... the horses there were bomb-proof ... and seeing the wildlife was amazing. I love Ireland ... being on the beach there at the Ring of Kerry, oh my God. I really like Turkey because it was so exotic. The guy we rode with knows everybody ... he introduced us to the local people. And out west, there are great ranches in Wyoming and Colorado where you can bring the whole family." Scariest moment | "We do a lot of challenging stuff. Herding bison was scary in Utah, because bison have these big horns that are huge, and they will charge you. But it was more exciting than scary because the guy I was with was so experienced. And the horse I had was great. He was gunning for those bison." Watch | "Equitrekking" airs at 7 p.m. Thursdays on SCETV.

It's also when, but not where, she got her first introduction to a love of horses that would eventually carry her to such places as the Ring of Kerry in Ireland; an Alberta, Canada, mountainside in a hail storm; and the beaches of Costa Rica, where she gets to share that love of horses and a love of travel each week with viewers of PBS channels across the U.S. and on international networks in more than 25 countries. "Every summer, my sister and I and my brother all went to camp," she said of annual stints in the N.C. mountains. "I would ride every summer at camp, and loved it. ... I loved being in the mountains, especially in the summer. And I was in awe of the horses. I used to think maybe at night I would sneak out and ride off into the woods," she said. "But I didn't." In those days, summer camp was the only place for Newman to get her equine fix. "I didn't get to maintain the horse thing after camp ... there was not a lot of money [for lessons] growing up." She was able to pursue her yen to perform, however. "Christie Karavan who runs the Myrtle Beach School of Performing Arts taught me dance for years, and then in eighth grade she cast me in Tricycle Productions' 'Alice in Wonderland' musical as Alice," she said. "My mom was also cast, and she said if she was going to have to drive me to rehearsal every other day, she was going to be in it as well. The performances were held at the Myrtle Beach High School, and it was a big deal at the time.

"I remember my mom being so nervous, but I wasn't at all at the time," she said. "I loved it." Learning the ropes

In print | Newman writes columns for equestrian magazines including Practical Horseman and True West. Equitrekking.com includes a monthly enewsletter, travel tips, a travel guide to equestrian vacations, travel articles, photos and Darley's Travel Blog.

During her years at boarding school and while attending George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Newman returned to Myrtle Beach in the summer, working as a hostess at Pier 14 and as a camera person for the "Southern Style" show. "It was my first real experience with TV and film, carrying equipment, setting up lights," she said. "I filmed some county council meetings. It was great. I got paid, and I was doing something good for my career later on." Those kinds of Grand Strand experiences sparked interests that would carry her forward to a career in broadcasting and eventually to her own Emmy-winning show. She studied radio and TV at George Washington. "I knew I wanted to work in the TV industry, but I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do. I started out doing a ton of different things."

In college she worked for a talk radio news service as a reporter. After college, she moved to New York City, where she did programming for the WB channel. A stint at "48 Hours" gave her experience at research at pre-interviewing subjects for the show's segments.

"I'd do something six months or a year, move to MAGAZINES the next thing, go up the ranks," she said. After leaving "48 Hours," she began freelancing full time, doing medical documentaries. Back in the saddle Meanwhile, Newman had resumed her connection with horses. "I got back into it in college when my mom and I went to North Carolina again and got to ride at Biltmore Estates," she said. "I said 'I can't stop doing this.'" When she moved to New York, she began riding at a barn in Connecticut. "I met a group of ladies there and started writing about my experiences with Trailblazer Magazine," she said. "That's how I got into the horse journalism thing. I went riding in Central Park and wrote about that." As she continued to freelance and ride, she asked herself that "What do I really want to do?" question. "I really want to travel and ride horses," she answered. "I just want to go all over the world." She pitched the idea of doing a story on horseback riding in Ireland to Irish tourist officials. "They said OK, they'd pay for it but asked 'Where's it going to air?'" Newman found a small horse network, since out of business, that said it would air it if she could get sponsorship. Tourism Ireland agreed to sponsor it. That was in 2004. She took that show and used it as a pilot to take to PBS. "I was going through the paces and seeing if I could make it happen," she said. "The goal was to get one show on PBS." They got that and more. The series began airing in 2006, and in 2009 it won two Daytime Emmys, one for Outstanding Single Camera Photography and one for Outstanding Special Class Series. "We were just happy to get nominated," she said. "I was sitting there in this room with all these important people and thought, 'Wow, this is a big deal.'" On the trail and beyond The "we" refers to the three-member team: Newman; her husband and executive producer, Chip Ward; and cinematographer Greg Barna. All three had prior experience with horses. Barna worked with race horses earlier in his career. "He's so comfortable around them," Newman said. "He's a good rider; some stuff we've shot on horseback. ... Most of the time he gets off to shoot. He rides ahead with Chip and stops at different places." When they're on a shoot, the team "leap-frogs" each other, Newman said. "Sometimes he [Barna] rides along with us, it depends on the terrain. He's amazing. Not only can he ride, he's an amazing shooter. He gets these angles and sees things that others don't see." Newman and Ward now live in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington, D.C. Both take riding lessons these days. It's both a break and a necessity. "I take jumping lessons, more for fun, really," Newman said. "It's a really good skill to know and I enjoy the challenge. ... I don't jump very high, just 2 feet and under." Ward's lessons are a bit different. His training focuses on dealing with the unexpected so he can handle anything they encounter on the trail. "I have to be able to jump on whatever horse is available," he said. Like the cinematographer, Ward and his horse are carrying an extra load. "A tripod's usually tied on to the back and I'm carrying 50 pounds of gear." Once the crew was on a trail 12,000 feet up in Colorado when a hail storm struck. "The horse got bonked on the head and threw me. It happened as I was holding the reins and trying to film Darley. He threw me right off." Such mishaps aside, planning and producing the show are far more complicated than the trail journeys themselves. "So much research goes into finding where to go riding," Newman said. "I have a network of people that I go to who ride around the world but don't film it. I'll call someone in New Mexico and ask if they know someone." Once Newman picks a location, Ward is the leader when it comes to logistics. "We have a different set of skills," he said as the two checked out the horses and riders at the Washington International Horse Show in October. "Darley works with the scripts and with the sound guys. She's great at talking with people and riding while on camera." Once the cameras are off and they're heading home, Ward takes charge, especially when going through customs. They noted that traveling in Middle Eastern countries with large quantities of recording gear can present challenges. "As a rule, I'm the only one who does the talking then," he said, smiling. The toughest customs challenge they've faced? "Coming back into the States from Mexico," Ward said, "Except going through [London's] Heathrow. Once the trip is over the work really begins. "There's so much in the editing, putting together and writing, sound editing and color correction," Newman said. "I do the editing but I don't do the final sound." No matter the amount of work, or even occasional danger involved, the show is a labor of love. Her advice for those seeking such job satisfaction? "Go for it, get as much experience as you can," she said. And don't be afraid to fail. "'Equitrekking' has been a success, but even if it hadn't been, I would have been happy that I had tried it. If you're looking for a dream job, try to do things on your own too. Get creative. No one's going to do it for you. As much as people say 'work your way up,' you have to be creative. It does require moving around and taking risks. Once you take the risk you have to stick to it. ... 'Equitrekking,' I've been working on it for years. It was not an overnight sensation." Syracuse, NY -- By day, Hillary Dobbs is a 21-year-old Harvard senior bustling around the Cambridge campus. Yet once the weekend arrives she isn’t off having fun with her friends, she is flying around the country practicing and competing at some of the biggest sport horse tournaments in the world.

Tam

This week Dobbs will be in Syracuse for the 126th Invitational Sporthorse Tournament. The Invitational is the last of three indoor finals that Dobbs has

“It’s for sure very difficult right now especially when you want to get indoors to ride and get back into the groove before you compete,” Dobbs said. “I’ve got deadlines at school almost every other day pretty much. I have to force myself to develop time to taking care of business at school so I can leave and do what I love and compete on the weekends.” Dobbs is accustomed to the hectic life and demanding travel schedule. When she was 14 years old, she persuaded her parents to allow her and her twin sister, Heather, to train with top-notch coaches Missy Clark and John Brennan at North Run Stables in Warren, Vt. That meant their mother, Debi, drove six hours from New Jersey to Vermont almost every weekend. Dobbs learned from Clark that her focus on equitation, which emphasizes a rider’s abilities on a horse instead of the horse itself, was not helping her. So they started working on Dobbs’ jumping skills.

“Hillary found her niche was not going to be in equitation,” Debi said. “Although it offered her discipline and a basis for riding, Missy steered her into jumping and all the things she learned in equitation she brought into the jumping arena. She just loved it and loved it immediately.” Dobbs exploded onto the equestrian jumping scene within a few years of training with Clark and currently is ranked No. 59 in the world. She will compete in Florida over Thanksgiving and will return in January to Jacksonville for the World Equestrian Games, which are held every four years. Since January of last year the Sussex, N.J., native has ridden in over 100 competitions in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, New York, Sweden, Great Britain, Ireland and Canada. This weekend’s show in Syracuse will be no different as she faces tough competition in Olympic medalists McClain Ward, Chris Kappler and Joe Fargis. They’ll compete in the $60,000 Spy Coast Farm High Junior/High AmateurOwner Jumper Championship and the Cavalor Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series Championship. While the sporthorse business is lucrative, it is also difficult to sustain because of the vast sum of money invested. With each of her five horses costing roughly $200,000, not including maintenance, stabling, competition fees and travel, Dobbs realizes she is lucky to have her parents support her riding career. Yet she is also trying to make a name for herself aside from her father, CNN personality Lou Dobbs. When Dobbs graduates from Harvard in May with a degree in government, she plans to pursue her jumping career full time, something she has never been able to do because of school. For now, Dobbs will just focus on Syracuse. “Syracuse is a great environment,” she said. “John Madden does a tremendous job with the horse show attracting crowds. He makes it a great environment for spectators, which adds to the quality of the sport.”

Video Sidewalk Style: Equestrian Look By Lucia Abramovich , Alejandro Salinas

Published Monday, October 26, 2009

The equestrian look is a long-standing source of inspiration for fashion designers, so when we heard the Washington International Horse Show was in town at the Verizon Center this past weekend, we decided to stop by and see who we might spot. “We like fashion, but it’s difficult to incorporate it into our riding clothes,” our latest subjects, Amber and Chelsey, told us. Their solution? Having fun with small accents like jewelry and belt buckles. Take a look at their fabulous Gucci buckles in our video below.

Over the Moon: Creativity Reigns Posted on 10 December 2009 The horsey set focuses on books, trees, dogs, and ponies (of course). By Vicky Moon

Evelyn Keyes, Coleman Jackson, and Gail Clark were guests at the closing night of the Washington International Horse Show. (Photo by Vicky Moon)

A NIGHT IN TOWN Hunt Country residents gathered in the Acela Club, high above the dirt-covered floor of the Verizon Center, for a casino-themed party during the final evening of the Washington International Horse Show. Kris Gali was on the arm of Bob Foosaner watching the action as 17-year-old equestrian Jessica Springsteen, daughter of rock star Bruce Springsteen, chatted away quietly with a young man nearby. At another white-linenclad table, competitor Alison Firestone Robitalle of Upperville studied the jumps as they were set for finals. Alison is the daughter of Diana and Bert Firestone who owned and raced the late Genuine Risk, winner of the 1980 Kentucky Derby. Several guests reported Academy Award winner/ filmmaker Steven Spielberg was in the building because his daughter, Destry Spielberg, was one of the many young riders in the pony classes. All the while, the blond and beautiful show president Juliet Weber Reid (a great granddaughter of Campbell’s Soup tycoon Dr. John T. Dorrance) never skipped a beat while smiling and greeting all who entered.

John Kelly - Meet a City Boy Who Loves Horses - washingtonpost.com

By John Kelly Thursday, April 9, 2009 Dannielle Brown says that if her son was into basketball, football, soccer -- or even golf -- she'd know what to do. But Jamal Brown doesn't like any of those sports. His dream is to be a show jumper and ride for the U.S. Equestrian Team. What's Dannielle supposed to do with that? It's not something many people would expect of a 16-year-old African American kid from Northeast Washington. "We thought it was cute," Dannielle said of the obsession Jamal has had since he was a toddler, when he used to gravitate to picture books about horses. " 'Oh, he likes horses,' like any child would like a dog or dinosaurs. But it just never went away." Back then, the family was living in Southern Maryland, and at 6, Jamal started taking riding lessons. "When he got on the horse, the instructor was blown away," Dannielle said. "She was like, 'This boy literally taught himself how to ride through all the books that he read.' "

the family moved back to the District, Jamal started going to the stables at Rock Creek Park. Then his mother got him a scholarship to the Barrie School. The Silver Spring private school has a dozen horses and ponies in its stables and a program that encourages students to ride them. Jamal is on Barrie's JV equestrian team this year and will move up to varsity next year. A box full of firstplace ribbons attests to his skill in equitation, an event in which riders are judged on how good they look on a horse. "A lot of guys when they ride, they don't love their horse," Paige Dunn, the Barrie coach, told me. "Jamal loves his horses. He gives them big pats and hugs. He treats them like they're more than just a vehicle," unlike most boy riders. "I think if he keeps this up, he'll go as far as he wants to." But, really, how far can he go? He doesn't own a horse. While others ride every day,

he's in the saddle only a few times a week. Dannielle said some people have told her it's unfair to let Jamal spend so much time dreaming of horses. They ask, Why encourage him? "Who am I to tell him not do that?" she said. "It's a rich white girl's sport," Kathy Clark told me. Kathy should know. A rich white girl herself, she grew up riding. She lives in Oakton and co-founded a high-tech company, Landmark Systems. She heard about Jamal through a friend of a friend and saw something in the polite, gentle boy who loves horses. She has helped pick up the expense of his riding lessons and last summer leased a horse named Chester for Jamal to ride regularly. Advertisement

A City Boy Who Loves Horses Goes Galloping Toward His Goals "The help I provide, it's a little bit financial, but it's also just introducing him to people and helping him meet the right people, which might lead to more opportunities," Kathy said. Jamal's mom wrote to Sheila Johnson, the wealthy cofounder of BET, whose daughter, Paige, is a competitive rider. Dannielle thought it would be instructive for Jamal to muck out the stalls at Johnson's Middleburg stables. She's still waiting to hear back. "We're not sure we wrote to the correct place," Dannielle said. Jamal also sent a letter to the Obamas, offering to show Malia and Sasha around Rock Creek Stables, where he works and rides most weekends. On a recent weeknight, after his long commute from school, Jamal pulled up some videos on a laptop computer at home in Brookland. There he was in jodhpurs, gloves, polished boots, a close-fitting jacket and a tie neatly knotted at his neck, trotting around an indoor ring.

Jessica Springsteen a star to watch at Washington International Horse Show - washingtonpost.com

Standout J. Springsteen has more than a name By T. Rees Shapiro Special to The Washington Post Tuesday, October 20, 2009 At this week's 51st annual Washington International Horse Show, Jessica Springsteen is one of the stars to watch. Springsteen, the 17-year-old daughter of rock-and-roll legend Bruce Springsteen, comes to the show, which begins Tuesday at Verizon Center, as one of the leading junior riders. She chooses to work at it."

This can be particularly challenging, as a rider has no knowledge of how to make the horse perform at its best. "I don't really get nervous until right before I go in the ring, but once I get in there I'm ready," Springsteen said. "But some of the other horses will give you trouble and that's the most nerve-wracking part, hoping you can pull it out." Last year, Springsteen finished sixth. The winner, Katherine Newman, had traded horses with Springsteen and won. This year, Springsteen will ride Newman's original winning horse, Class Action, a tall, gray 10year-old. "She looks at each class as a goal, and never puts crazy pressure on herself to perform," Madden said. "She's studied her riding and it's clear she has the ability." Advertisement

Springsteen, of Colts Neck, N.J., will be competing in the WIHS equitation finals against 30 other riders, but she has a distinct advantage: the winning horse. In this class, riders must complete two rounds on their own mounts and then, if they qualify for the final round, must randomly trade horses with other finalists.

Standout J. Springsteen has more than a name Springsteen is not the only recognizable name in the show. Paige Johnson is the daughter of Black Entertainment Television cofounders Robert Johnson, majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, and Sheila Johnson, managing partner and president of the WNBA's Washington Mystics. She will compete in the adult jumper division. Hillary Dobbs, daughter of CNN's Lou Dobbs, and Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, will compete in the $100,000 President's Cup open jumper competition Saturday night against Olympic gold medalists McLain Ward and Brazilian Rodrigo Pessoa, among others. Jumper riders must have the balance of a ballerina, the strength of a gymnast and the analytical mind of a golfer, in order to quickly and safely navigate a course of jumps that are sometimes six feet tall and 10 feet wide.

players, make plays and score." Springsteen agreed, saying, "The horse is the one actually going over those jumps, and you're just helping them get to the right place and letting them do what they do best." Note: The horse show runs through Sunday. Children's admission is free and adult tickets are $15 before 7 p.m. all week. Children's tickets are $10 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and $20 Friday and Saturday evenings. Adult tickets are $20 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings and $30 Friday and Saturday evenings.

But more than anything, they need a willing accomplice. "To me it's 90 percent about the horse, and 10 percent to the rider to get the horse to the jump squarely, and be able to handle the pressure of the situation," said three-time President's Cup winner Rodney Jenkins, 65, now a leading Maryland thoroughbred trainer. John Kelly - Columnist John Kelly: Horsing around at this show's serious - washingtonpost.com

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 By John Kelly See that horse? The one being led by a jodhpured and helmeted rider down the sidewalk of Sixth Street NW, catty-corner from the Engine Company 2 firehouse? Follow it as it clip-clops past the Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille, down a yawning ramp and into the bowels of the Verizon Center. There, you will encounter a wiry man in casual clothes, a walkie-talkie in hand. "This is the most complicated logistical operation in our business," the man, Robert Ridland, will tell you. That would be the horse show business. Robert and his co-manager, David Distler, have been putting on horse shows all over the country for years. But for sheer logistical legerdemain, none compares to the Washington International Horse Show. It's like throwing a week-long ballroom-dancing competition for 300 four-legged guests in a rented gymnasium in a busy downtown.

Footing is what non-horse people might call "the ground." It's what the horses put their feet on. "My dad and me, we're big in footing," says Bobby Murphy, a fifth-generation horseman who's come from Kentucky to obsess about the sand: how deep it is, how wet it is, how firm it is. It needs to be "fluffy" for the hunter class -- horses judged on the grace they display over modest jumps -- and compact for the jumpers: horses that fly over ever-higher obstacles. A dapper man strides out of the ring, a large measuring tape in one hand. It's Richard Jeffery, a professional jump designer from England. Somebody has to decide exactly where to put the jumps and what they'll look like.

Or maybe it's more like a beach volleyball competition, because the first thing that happens after the last ice from the Capitals' rink has melted is that 66 dump truck loads of fine limestone sand come in. "It's a lot of sand," Robert says. But as they say in the show jumping world: The three most important things in an equestrian event are footing, footing and footing.

John Kelly - Columnist John Kelly: Horsing around at this show's serious - washingtonpost.com

"We're trying to find a fair result without making it tricky, without making it dangerous," Richard explains. Golfers can recognize a Jack Nicklaus- or Pete Dyedesigned golf course. Is it the same for show rings? "I think it's fair to say each of us have our own style," Richard says. Of course, every designer must start with the same piece of geometry: A standard horse has a 12-foot stride. Thus designers tend to work in distances of 24, 36, 48 and 60 feet, adding or subtracting a few feet here and there to test a competitor's skill. What's a Richard Jeffery course like? "Not so brutal," he says. He started out as an architect and designed houses before switching to horse jumps. "I try to make it cohesive. Other people will just put some jumps together." Outside Verizon, traffic's been blocked off and tents and stalls erected on F Street. Wood shavings cushion the concrete underhoof. Hoses are strung along fences so the horses can be watered; electrical lines are set up to power hair clippers. The horses are equal parts athlete and fashion model, as if you'd mixed Usain Bolt with Cindy Crawford. This is some expensive horse flesh, each easily worth six figures -- and some worth seven.

to one another in Spanish or polishing tall, black riding boots. In the quiet of the tents, a few braiders are hard at work, tying on tail extensions or taming unruly manes. Stacia Heslar from California has been a professional braider for 11 years. Standing on a stool next to a horse called On Top, she crochets in black yarn, turning the horse's main from dreadlocks to cornrows to little nubs she calls "peanuts." A warm, yeasty, not-unpleasant smell is everywhere. It's the smell of horses. The main note is manure. That's what the blue dumpsters are for. "You don't just put it in the city's garbage system," Robert says. A contractor is hired to cart it all away. Please resist the urge to note that it's just more $#*& coming out of Washington.

Cox brings pedigree of his own to horse training - washingtonpost.com

Strong pedigree's not all Cox brings to an event By T. Rees Shapiro Thursday, October 22, 2009 Archibald Cox III inherited his work ethic, morals, and dedication to the community from his grandfather. "Archie," as he is known on the horse-show circuit, is a prominent trainer and rider from Los Angeles who has seven clients competing in the Washington International Horse Show this week at Verizon Center. He also boasts a tenable tie to Washington history. His grandfather, Archibald Cox, was special prosecutor during the investigation into the break-in at the Watergate. Known for omnipresent bowties, his grandfather, a Harvard professor, was appointed special prosecutor in 1973; his firing came as part of what is known as the "Saturday Night Massacre." Cox, 41, was first exposed to horses by his grandmother, Phyllis Cox, who served on the Horse Show's board of directors in the 1970s. He grew up in horse country in Locust Valley, N.Y., where he "fell in love with jumping horses."

training style keep his clientele happy and numerous. A few include actress Portia de Rossi; Camilla Cleese, daughter of Monty Python's John Cleese; Kelley Johnson, wife of actor Don Johnson; and Gabbi Langston, daughter of former major leaguer Mark Langston. "He's just so much fun to hang out with," said Laura Wasserman, a client who is riding in the amateur-owner hunter division this week. "He's also the hardest worker out there, always up at 4:30 in the morning taking care of the horses, and he's respected by so many different people." Cox says that, like his grandfather, his ethic is "early to bed, early to rise." He also serves on the board of directors for the Horse Show and provides a unique perspective to his fellow members.

He graduated from Drew University in New Jersey, won the intercollegiate riding national championships, and then headed west. In 2001, Cox started his own training business, Brookway Stables, based in Los Angeles. His personality and positive

Strong pedigree's not all Cox brings to an event "A Cox tradition is to have a strong commitment to the community you enjoy so much and gives you a great deal," Cox said. "People appreciate that I'm willing to work to make the trainers and riders happy from the footing, aesthetics, and scheduling, and bring their concerns to the board because this industry is my livelihood." While Cox makes his living taking care of horses, to him, it doesn't seem like work. "People say I work a lot, but I really enjoy what I do," Cox said. "I take pride in it." Note: Erin Stewart, aboard Confidential, and Terri Kessler, aboard Pavarotti, were the cogrand champions of the amateur-owner hunter division Wednesday night.

The courage for a powerful jump D'Ambrosio, Sweet'N Low set puissance mark in 1983 that still stands today Friday, October 23, 2009

When Anthony D'Ambrosio sailed over the 7-foot, 7 1/2 -inch vertical wall at the Washington International Horse Show in 1983, he did it aboard Sweet'N Low, a gray, 9year-old thoroughbred who weighed as much as a Piper Cub airplane. On landing, Sweet'N Low's tremendous impact nearly flipped D'Ambrosio headfirst into the sand. "One of the strangest feelings of jumping a big wall is the hang time," D'Ambrosio said. "At the apex of the jumping arc, there's a momentary loss of forward motion, and then a very, very steep descent, and that's when you hope you have a horse that can do it. You're pushing the horse to its absolute limits, but it's truly incredible when they can withstand it and do it."

D'Ambrosio and Sweet'N Low set a U.S. indoor record that night that remains untouched 26 years later. In Friday night's $25,000 high-jumping class known as the puissance, which is French for "power," riders will take part in one of the purest forms of the jumping discipline.

But because of the extreme height of the obstacle, the most critical part of puissance jumping is the "recovery stride," or the first step the horse takes right after landing to regain its balance, D'Ambrosio said. "It takes a brave horse," said D'Ambrosio, 55, of Red Hook, N.Y. "When you approach the http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/22/AR2009102204390.html

wall, neither you or the horse can see over or through the jump. It takes a confident horse that will give everything to the rider and try it. Mistakes are more costly at that height and horses know that, too." D'Ambrosio, who at 13 won the first puissance he entered, never jumped his horses above 6-6 during practice. "Above that and it's up to them to try it" during competition. That night in 1983, Sweet'N Low jumped to a record height with apparent ease. After they broke the record, D'Ambrosio said he would have tried even higher. "Each time we jumped he got better and better," D'Ambrosio said of Sweet'N Low, whose owner, Donald Tober, also owned the company that packaged the artificial sweetener. "He studied each jump and became easier to ride after each time, it was incredible. I think we could have jumped 7-10 clean." Every horse that competes in the puissance is a jumper horse, but not every jumper horse can perform well in a puissance competition, D'Ambrosio said. "It's an ability within the animal," D'Ambrosio said. "You can teach anyone to throw a basketball, but you can't teach someone to be a great basketball player. You can't teach someone how to dunk, but still players who are small and tall can because it's within them." -- T. Horse jumper Ward looks to add to winnings total with President's Cup win - washingtonpost.com

Ward looks to add to winnings total By T. Rees Shapiro Saturday, October 24, 2009 On Thursday night, Olympic gold medal winner McLain Ward raked in $7,500 in 102 seconds of work. That's $270,000 per hour, which means in 10 minutes he could make more money jumping horses than most Americans earn in a year. The purse for the winner of Saturday night's $100,000 President's Cup is $30,000 and Ward is favored to take it. He won last year. He also took first place Thursday in a $30,000 jumper class that is considered the warmup for Saturday's big event. "We always try to compete to win," said Ward, who has bigger plans beyond Saturday. "It's been a good year. [I don't make] as much as LeBron James yet, but I'm working on it." The competition is fierce for this top prize. The field of 30 includes some of the sport's top riders. He looks at course designing as a series of "questions" for which the horse and rider must find their own "answers." He said riders who have seen a variety of courses will have a distinct advantage. "The course is a question of how well the horse can jump, but it is also a question of how well the horse has been prepared," Jorge, 42, said. "Some of the questions on the course the rider can't solve in that moment. It pays to have experience, to be more prepared to adjust to anything because anything can happen on the course." Riders use the number of strides between each jump as a guide for the correct distance to take off from, meaning riders

Horse jumper Ward looks to add to winnings total with President's Cup win - washingtonpost.com

Ward looks to add to winnings total have to be accurate calculating strides to the jumps. One way Jorge can challenge the horse and rider is by tweaking the distances between jumps. The average horse's stride is about 12 feet. If a combination of jumps are spaced 60 feet apart, the horse should take five strides between them. Jorge might adjust the distance to give the rider a choice. Since grand prix competitions are based on fastest time, riders are more likely to take risks to be quicker. In grand prix competition two seconds can separate first place and fifth. They might push their horse through the combination in four fast strides instead of the usual five. But risks can be costly. If a horse knocks down a rail, the rider's time is penalized. T he purse for fifth place tonight is $6,000. Horse show note: Ward won the $25,000 open jumper puissance class aboard Vancouver. He cleared 6 feet 7 inches to claim the $8,000 first prize.

Minikus Wins President's Cup Beats out 28 other riders for $30,000 first prize By T. Rees Shapiro Sunday, October 25, 2009 Jumper rider Todd Minikus of Wellington, Fla., won the $100,000 President's Cup grand prix aboard Alaska, an 11-year-old dark bay gelding, on Saturday at the 51st Washington International Horse Show at Verizon Center. Minikus, who picked up his second President's Cup win, beat out 28 others riders who represented a competitive sampling of the sport's highest-caliber international athletes including several medal-winning Olympians. The secondplace finisher was Kate Levy of Wellington, Fla., who rode Lirving Du Volsin. Third place was awarded to Mario Deslauries of New York, aboard Vicomte D. The course included a complex series of fences set between four feet and 5 feet 3 inches tall and spread as wide as six feet. Three riders jumped the course clear with no rails knocked down and under the time allowed to proceed to the second jump off round.

Minikus Wins President's Cup In the $15,000 Open Jumper Pairs Relay, riders Shane Sweetnam and Charlie Jayne teamed up to take first place and the $3,000 first prize. In the relay, both riders enter the ring at the same time and combine to complete two clear rounds over a course with jumps set at four and a half feet within a set amount of time. Sweetnam rode Udonja, and Jayne rode Caratina III. Jayne and Caratina III competed in Friday night's Pussiance competition and finished fourth.

Canadian Olympic dressage rider Ashley Holzer will show how quietly and subtly she can guide her mount, Pop Art, through a series of gaits and movements to show her horse's quick feet and control.

Earlier in the day, Samantha Harrison won the $10,000 Senator's Cup Junior Jumper Stake aboard Santika, with a clear round in a time of 30.91 seconds. Reed Kessler and her horse Flight were the Junior Jumper champions and Harrison and Santika were the reserve champions. The Junior Jumper style of riding award went to Laura Pfeiffer who rode Catwoman. The horse show ends today with a 1 p.m. "World of the Horse" exhibition demonstrating a variety of equestrian disciplines. There will be Western style barrel racing demonstration, where riders whip their mounts around three barrels placed in a triangle formation for a fast time. There will be a polo demonstration as well. Polo is an ancient sport that traces its origins back to the sixth century B.C. As a team sport played on a grass field or indoors in a sand arena, the objective is for riders to use long sticks to hit a ball through a goal to score points.

Washington International Horse Show not immune to budget concerns - washingtonpost.com

Show not immune to budget concerns By T. Rees Shapiro Monday, October 26, 2009 In the midst of a recovering recession, officials at the Washington International Horse Show anticipated the need to cut back on spending this year, and little on their budget was sacred.

Another way Hitchcock saved was by cutting some entertainment costs. Every year, the horse show has demonstrations promoting the wide variety of equestrian disciplines. This year, however, Hitchcock cut one out, a driving exhibition that he estimated saved almost $15,000.

Even some of the trophies were downsized to six-inch silver plates.

Hitchcock said he would never cut out the crowd favorite: the zippy and chaotic Jack Russell races in which terriers chase a tail over a series of jumps. "We'll race anything that can squeeze into the 10-inch box," said race organizer Tommy Lee Jones, of Warrenton. "Though watching Cairn terriers is like watching the paint dry, they are so slow." The terriers are here to stay, Hitchcock said, "unless you want to get me lynched."

"Every single expenditure was analyzed and valued," said Eric L. Straus, the event's chief executive. "There is no magic silver bullet. It's just little by little." The annual price tag for running the sixday event, which ended Sunday, is more than $3 million. The Verizon Center alone cost $390,000 for the week. "Where I could, I chopped," said Anthony Hitchcock, the chief operations officer. "The goal, though, was to make it not apparent to the two main constituents, the competitors and the visitors."

Straus said two-thirds of their overall budget is derived from corporate and private sponsorships, with the other third coming Advertisement

One way Hitchcock was able to save "more than $100,000" was through a marketing partnership with the Animal Planet. The network created TV commercials, posters and advertisements promoting the horse show at no cost. The horse show also moved its corporate offices from Gaithersburg to the District to take advantage of the tax exemption.

Show not immune to budget concerns from sales and entry fees. A weekly pass to the horse show cost $90 for adults and a night ticket to the show's premier event, the $100,000 President's Cup, cost $30. Last year, the horse show sold $325,000 worth of tickets. This year, Hitchcock expects sales of $200,000. In order to encourage more families to attend this week, children under 12 got in free before 5 p.m.

"We'll always come to the Washington International Horse Show because this show helps educate the greater D.C. community about our sport," said Gali, whose 14-yearold daughter Miranda earned a third-place ribbon this week in a hunter class. "It keeps the family together, too, and teaches discipline and hard work. There's no material figure on this." shapirot@washpost.com

Despite lagging ticket sales, Straus said he is not worried about the future of the show. "You can take the Metro to see the horse show, you can stay in the hotel right across the street from the horses, you're at a competition in downtown D.C. seven blocks from the White House," Straus said. "It's an important part of our success." But show riding is an expensive hobby. A quality horse can be worth six figures, which does not include veterinary bills, feed and stables. Just to compete, riders must pay entry fees that can range anywhere from $300 to $1,300 per class. Horse show participation has declined nationwide by 12 percent this year because of the economy, Straus said.

Kris Gali, a 42-year-old mother from Potomac, said her family has cut back on some shows on the competitive circuit, but not the Washington show.

John Kelly - An update on some inspiring Washington area people in 2009 - washingtonpost.com

Wednesday, December 30, 2009 By John Kelly As 2009 comes to a close, I thought I'd update you on a few of the people we met in my column this year. To read the original columns, visit my blog: voices. washingtonpost.com/commons. Not just horsing around Jamal Brown lives in Northeast Washington, not exactly a hotbed of equestrianism. But ever since he was a toddler, this city kid has been obsessed with horses. After my April column about Jamal, he was approached by the Washington International Horse Show, which made Jamal its official youth ambassador. He was at the show all week and met some of the country's top riders. Jamal competes on the varsity riding team at the Barrie School in Silver Spring, where he's a junior. Soon he'll be looking at colleges. He's hoping to earn a scholarship to ride at a school that has an equestrian team. "This is his passion," said Jamal's mother, Dannielle Brown. "I can't imagine him doing anything other than something connected with a career in horses."

Each spring Arlington County's Stephen Powers embarks on a marathon eight-hour trip to visit all 40 of the weathered, 200year-old stones that mark Washington's original borders. After my May column, Stephen earned a meritorious service award from the local chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. When the weather warms up, some volunteers from that group will restore the rusty metal fence around the eastern cornerstone. Best of all, a local collector contacted Stephen and allowed him to examine an original manuscript by Fred Woodward, who in 1906 started photographing all the stones. "That was like looking at the Holy Grail of the boundary stone preservation effort," Stephen said. Stephen will embark on his fifth annual boundary stones trip this May. "I think my mother wants to go," he said. "There's a

couple stones that are tough to get a 73year-old woman down into, but she's a trooper." Honoring the troops Scott Kreger of Germantown vowed to provide every returning veteran with a token of his gratitude: a sticker reading "AFG" or "IRQ" and "I served." After my July column, donations to his effort poured in. So did requests for stickers. "We've sent off 240,000 stickers now," Scott said. "I have only seen one, and it drives me crazy that I haven't seen any more. I heard that if you drive through Walter Reed they're everywhere." The program has been such a hit that he wants to expand it to honor vets from another war. Said Scott: "If anybody out there has a really good contact with Vietnam veterans, I'd love it." You may soon see bumpers emblazoned with "VNM: I served." (E-mail Scott through his Web site at http://www.iservedsticker.org.)
