Welcome to Aperture 2018 The power of pictures to shape our consciousness, and to change us, runs thematically throughout Aperture’s 2018 list.

Our lead title, featured on the cover of this catalogue, is the first book of photographs

by Deanna Lawson, both an album of exquisite pictures of black life in the United States and the African diaspora, and a radical visual contribution to photographic language and representation. With an essay by novelist Zadie Smith and an interview by cinematographer Arthur Jafa, Deana Lawson: An Aperture Monograph stands as a major publication by one of the most striking photographic artists working today, and joins the illustrious company of groundbreaking Aperture titles by Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and LaToya Ruby Frazier.

Questions of representation are at the core of Hank Willis Thomas’s art—combining original photography, with re-appropriated images and sculpture, in works of great wit and power. His first major survey, All Things Being Equal is his second book with Aperture, and serves as the catalogue for a major touring retrospective from the Portland Museum of Art, Oregon.

Our magazine program for 2018 launched with Prison Nation, a touring exhibition and program of talks, as well as an issue of the magazine. It deals with mass incarceration in the US, not with political invective, but by exploring the role of photography to humanize its subject, and the lives of particular prisoners, and of their families. On its heels is Film & Foto, which considers the influence of still photographers on the movie images that cast spells over us.

In Beyond the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception, Judy Glickman Lauder’s haunting, expressionist pictures of concentration camps frame the story of how almost all of Denmark’s Jews reached safety in Sweden. She speaks to a contemporary audience, graphically reminding us what hate can lead to, while pointing out how we may stand in its path.

“As the world moves increasingly toward an image-dependent style of communication,” writes photo-historian Russell Lord in the introduction to Looking Again: Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art, “there has never been a better time to seriously examine our belief in or apprehension toward the photographic image.” There never has.

Deana Lawson is one of the most intriguing photographers of her generation. Over the last ten years, she has created a visionary language to describe identities, through intimate portraiture and striking accounts of ceremonies and rituals.

Using medium and large-format cameras, Lawson works with models she meets in the United States and on travels in the Caribbean and Africa to construct arresting, highly structured, and deliberately theatrical scenes animated by an exquisite range of color and attention to surprising details: bedding and furniture in domestic interiors or lush plants in Edenic gardens. The body—often nude—is central. Throughout her work, which invites comparison to the photography of Diane Arbus, Jeff Wall, and Carrie Mae Weems, Lawson seeks to portray the personal and the powerful in black life. Deana Lawson: An Aperture Monograph features forty beautifully reproduced photographs, an essay by the acclaimed writer Zadie Smith, and an expansive conversation with the filmmaker Arthur Jafa.

Deana Lawson (born in Rochester, New York, 1979) is a photographer based in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Lawson is currently assistant professor in visual arts at Princeton University.

Zadie Smith is the author of the novels White Teeth (2001), The Autograph Man (2003), On Beauty (2006), NW (2013), and Swing Time (2016), and the essay collections Changing My Mind (2010) and Feel Free (2018). Winner of the Whitbread first novel award and the Guardian First Book Award, among others, she is a regular contributor to the New Yorker and Harper’s.

Arthur Jafa is a filmmaker and cinematographer whose work includes Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death (2017), Sharifa Walks (2015), In the Morning (2014), and Dreams Are Colder Than Death (2014). Jafa has exhibited his work at major institutions and galleries worldwide.

Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal presents a survey of the artist’s prolific and extraordinary interdisciplinary career, with a particular focus on the work’s relationship to the photographic image and to issues of representation and perception. At the core of Hank Willis Thomas’s practice is his ability to parse and critically dissect the flow of images that comprises American culture, and to do so with particular attention to race, gender, and cultural identity. Other powerful themes include the commodification of identity through popular media, sports, and advertising. In the ten years since his first publication, Pitch Blackness, Thomas has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary art, equally at home with collaborative, trans-media projects such as Question Bridge (see p. 87), Philly Block, and For Freedoms as he is with high-profile, international solo exhibitions. This extensive presentation of his work contextualizes the material with incisive essays from Portland Art Museum curators Julia Dolan and Sara Krajewski and art historian Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, and an in-depth interview between Dr. Kellie Jones and the artist that elaborates on Thomas’s influences and inspirations.

Hank Willis Thomas (born in Plainfield, New Jersey, 1976) received his BFA from New York University and an MFA in photography and an MA in visual criticism from California College of the Arts. His first monograph, Pitch Blackness, was published by Aperture in 2008. In 2017, Thomas received the Soros Equality Fellowship and AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize. Thomas is a member of the Public Design Commission of the City of New York. He is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, Goodman Gallery in South Africa, Maruani Mercier Gallery in Belgium, and Ben Brown Fine Arts in London and Hong Kong.

Julia Dolan, PhD, is the Minor White Curator of Photography at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon.

Sara Krajewski is the Robert and Mercedes Eicholz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon.

Over the past thirty years Glickman Lauder has captured the intensity of death camps in Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, in dark and expressive photographs, telling of a world turned upside down, and, in contrast, the redemptive and uplifting story of the “Danish exception.” Including texts by Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Judith S. Goldstein and a previously unpublished original text by survivor Elie Wiesel, Beyond the Shadows demonstrates passionately what hate can lead to, and what can be done to stand in its path.

Judy Glickman Lauder is a photographer, humanitarian, and philanthropist. For more than thirty years, she has documented and explored the Holocaust and its aftermath as an activist and artist. Her books include Upon Reflection: Photographs by Judy Ellis Glickman (2012), as well as a book on the work of her father, For the Love of It: The Photography of Irving Bennett Ellis (2008). Lauder is represented by the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City.

Elie Wiesel was one of America’s most influential voices for remembering and understanding the Holocaust. He received the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement in 1985 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

Michael Berenbaum is the director of the Sigi Ziering Institute and a professor of Jewish studies at the American Jewish University. As project director, he oversaw the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and was the first director of its research institute.

Judith S. Goldstein is an author, historian, and human rights leader. In 1997, she founded the international educational organization Humanity in Action.

Walter Chandoha (born in Bayonne, New Jersey, 1920) is a veteran photographer and writer who has worked as a professional freelancer for over forty years. His flora and fauna photography has appeared on over three hundred magazine covers; in thousands of advertisements for various companies, from small businesses to the Fortune 500; in numerous book publications; and on posters, billboards, various printed matter, and even credit cards.

In May 1971, Artforum, bastion of late modernism, featured the work of a photographer for the very first time. On its cover and in a six-page spread, it published selections from Diane Arbus's portfolio, A box of ten photographs. In the words of the magazine’s editor and photography skeptic, Philip Leider, “The portfolio changed everything . . . one could no longer deny [photography’s] status as art.” At the time of Arbus’s death, two months later, only four of the intended edition of fifty had been sold. Two had been purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon (the first for himself, the second as a gift for his friend Mike Nichols); another was purchased by Jasper Johns; and a fourth by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper’s Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets; each print was accompanied by an interleaving vellum slip-sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph, A woman with her baby monkey, N.J. 1971.

Acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, in 1986—and the only one of the four completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held—that portfolio is the subject of an exhibition on view at the museum from April through September 2018. This exceptional book replicates the nature of Diane Arbus’s original and now legendary object. Smithsonian curator John P. Jacob, who has unearthed a trove of new information in preparing the book and exhibition, weaves a fascinating tale of the creation, production, and continuing repercussions of this seminal work.

Diane Arbus (born and died in New York, 1923–1971) is one of the towering figures of twentieth-century art. In the fortyfive years since her death, her singular achievements have been celebrated by a host of major museum retrospectives throughout the world and by six posthumous publications, all of which have remained continuously in print since their publication, including Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), and Diane Arbus: Revelations (2003) .

Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College.

Stephen Shore Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers. For the youngest working today, his series such as American Surfaces and Uncommon Places remain ongoing and indisputable reference points. Shore had his own work purchased by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art at the age of fourteen. At seventeen, he was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory, producing an important photographic document of the scene, and in 1971, at the age of twentyfour, he became the first living photographer since Alfred Stieglitz forty years earlier to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
