Welcome to Aperture 2018 The power of pictures to shape our consciousness, and to change us, runs thematically throughout Aperture’s 2018 list. Our lead title, featured on the cover of this catalogue, is the first book of photographs by Deanna Lawson, both an album of exquisite pictures of black life in the United States and the African diaspora, and a radical visual contribution to photographic language and representation. With an essay by novelist Zadie Smith and an interview by cinematographer Arthur Jafa, Deana Lawson: An Aperture Monograph stands as a major publication by one of the most striking photographic artists working today, and joins the illustrious company of groundbreaking Aperture titles by Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and LaToya Ruby Frazier. Questions of representation are at the core of Hank Willis Thomas’s art—combining original photography, with re-appropriated images and sculpture, in works of great wit and power. His first major survey, All Things Being Equal is his second book with Aperture, and serves as the catalogue for a major touring retrospective from the Portland Museum of Art, Oregon. Our magazine program for 2018 launched with Prison Nation, a touring exhibition and program of talks, as well as an issue of the magazine. It deals with mass incarceration in the US, not with political invective, but by exploring the role of photography to humanize its subject, and the lives of particular prisoners, and of their families. On its heels is Film & Foto, which considers the influence of still photographers on the movie images that cast spells over us. In Beyond the Shadows: The Holocaust and the Danish Exception, Judy Glickman Lauder’s haunting, expressionist pictures of concentration camps frame the story of how almost all of Denmark’s Jews reached safety in Sweden. She speaks to a contemporary audience, graphically reminding us what hate can lead to, while pointing out how we may stand in its path. “As the world moves increasingly toward an image-dependent style of communication,” writes photo-historian Russell Lord in the introduction to Looking Again: Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art, “there has never been a better time to seriously examine our belief in or apprehension toward the photographic image.” There never has. —Chris Boot, Executive Director

Family
As part of Aperture magazine’s ongoing series of issues that profile the photographic culture of a particular city, the Los Angeles issue will explore how one of America’s most photogenic cities is also an essential hub for some of today’s most important photography and photo-based art. Los Angeles will feature key figures in the city’s photography community and portfolios by figures who continue a conceptual tradition long associated with the city’s art scene.
Family considers the ways photographers have chronicled their relationships with those closest to them, be it immediate family or their community of friends.

Essay by Zadie Smith Interview by Arthur Jafa • • •
A landmark first book by a powerful and original voice in photography An exquisitely reproduced, radical vision of America and the African diaspora Invites comparison to masterworks of Diane Arbus, Jeff Wall, and Carrie Mae Weems
Deana Lawson is one of the most intriguing photographers of her generation. Over the last ten years, she has created a visionary language to describe identities, through intimate portraiture and striking accounts of ceremonies and rituals. Using medium and large-format cameras, Lawson works with models she meets in the United States and on travels in the Caribbean and Africa to construct arresting, highly structured, and deliberately theatrical scenes animated by an exquisite range of color and attention to surprising details: bedding and furniture in domestic interiors or lush plants in Edenic gardens. The body—often nude—is central. Throughout her work, which invites comparison to the photography of Diane Arbus, Jeff Wall, and Carrie Mae Weems, Lawson seeks to portray the personal and the powerful in black life. Deana Lawson: An Aperture Monograph features forty beautifully reproduced photographs, an essay by the acclaimed writer Zadie Smith, and an expansive conversation with the filmmaker Arthur Jafa. Deana Lawson (born in Rochester, New York, 1979) is a photographer based in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Lawson is currently assistant professor in visual arts at Princeton University. Zadie Smith is the author of the novels White Teeth (2001), The Autograph Man (2003), On Beauty (2006), NW (2013), and Swing Time (2016), and the essay collections Changing My Mind (2010) and Feel Free (2018). Winner of the Whitbread first novel award and the Guardian First Book Award, among others, she is a regular contributor to the New Yorker and Harper’s. Arthur Jafa is a filmmaker and cinematographer whose work includes Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death (2017), Sharifa Walks (2015), In the Morning (2014), and Dreams Are Colder Than Death (2014). Jafa has exhibited his work at major institutions and galleries worldwide.

Texts by Julia Dolan, Sara Krajewski, and Sarah Elizabeth Lewis Interview by Dr. Kellie Jones • • •
The first in-depth overview of this influential artist’s work Timely and provocative survey that speaks directly to today’s most pressing social issues Pop-inflected, smart, and compelling art that crosses genres and disciplines
Copublished by Aperture and Portland Art Museum, Oregon
Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal presents a survey of the artist’s prolific and extraordinary interdisciplinary career, with a particular focus on the work’s relationship to the photographic image and to issues of representation and perception. At the core of Hank Willis Thomas’s practice is his ability to parse and critically dissect the flow of images that comprises American culture, and to do so with particular attention to race, gender, and cultural identity. Other powerful themes include the commodification of identity through popular media, sports, and advertising. In the ten years since his first publication, Pitch Blackness, Thomas has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary art, equally at home with collaborative, trans-media projects such as Question Bridge (see p. 87), Philly Block, and For Freedoms as he is with high-profile, international solo exhibitions. This extensive presentation of his work contextualizes the material with incisive essays from Portland Art Museum curators Julia Dolan and Sara Krajewski and art historian Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, and an in-depth interview between Dr. Kellie Jones and the artist that elaborates on Thomas’s influences and inspirations.

Important new contribution to Holocaust literature, with an unpublished original text by Elie Wiesel Published on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the rescue of Denmark’s Jews during WWII Beautifully reproduced black-and-white images by photographer and humanitarian Judy Glickman Lauder
The extraordinary experiences of ordinary people—their suffering and their unimaginable bravery—are the subject of Judy Glickman Lauder’s remarkable photographs. Beyond the Shadows responds to the world’s looking the other way as the Nazis took power and their hate-fueled nationalism steadily turned to mass murder. In the context of the horror of the Holocaust, it also tells the uplifting story of how the citizens and leadership of Denmark, under occupation and at tremendous risk to themselves, defied the Third Reich to transport the country’s Jews to safety in Sweden. Over the past thirty years Glickman Lauder has captured the intensity of death camps in Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, in dark and expressive photographs, telling of a world turned upside down, and, in contrast, the redemptive and uplifting story of the “Danish exception.” Including texts by Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Judith S. Goldstein and a previously unpublished original text by survivor Elie Wiesel, Beyond the Shadows demonstrates passionately what hate can lead to, and what can be done to stand in its path. Judy Glickman Lauder is a photographer, humanitarian, and philanthropist. For more than thirty years, she has documented and explored the Holocaust and its aftermath as an activist and artist. Her books include Upon Reflection: Photographs by Judy Ellis Glickman (2012), as well as a book on the work of her father, For the Love of It: The Photography of Irving Bennett Ellis (2008). Lauder is represented by the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City. Elie Wiesel was one of America’s most influential voices for remembering and understanding the Holocaust. He received the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement in 1985 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. Michael Berenbaum is the director of the Sigi Ziering Institute and a professor of Jewish studies at the American Jewish University. As project director, he oversaw the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and was the first director of its research institute. Judith S. Goldstein is an author, historian, and human rights leader. In 1997, she founded the international educational organization Humanity in Action.

The authentic artist’s voice, drawn from the last thirty years of Aperture magazine and the foundation’s publishing Required reading for everyone seriously interested in photography Over seventy conversations from the most influential names in photography, from Robert Adams to LaToya Ruby Frazier
Why did Henri Cartier-Bresson nearly have a posthumous exhibition while still alive? What led Stephen Shore to work with color? Why was Sophie Calle accused of stealing Vermeer’s The Concert? And what is Susan Meiselas’s take on Instagram and the future of online storytelling? A stunning large-format reproduction of Diane Arbus’s iconic portfolio The only instance in which Arbus curated her own work for presentation to the public In publication form for one time only; this book will not be reprinted
Published by Aperture in association with the Smithsonian American Art Museum
In May 1971, Artforum, bastion of late modernism, featured the work of a photographer for the very first time. On its cover and in a six-page spread, it published selections from Diane Arbus's portfolio, A box of ten photographs. In the words of the magazine’s editor and photography skeptic, Philip Leider, “The portfolio changed everything . . . one could no longer deny [photography’s] status as art.” At the time of Arbus’s death, two months later, only four of the intended edition of fifty had been sold. Two had been purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon (the first for himself, the second as a gift for his friend Mike Nichols); another was purchased by Jasper Johns; and a fourth by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper’s Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets; each print was accompanied by an interleaving vellum slip-sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph, A woman with her baby monkey, N.J. 1971. Acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, in 1986—and the only one of the four completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held—that portfolio is the subject of an exhibition on view at the museum from April through September 2018. This exceptional book replicates the nature of Diane Arbus’s original and now legendary object. Smithsonian curator John P. Jacob, who has unearthed a trove of new information in preparing the book and exhibition, weaves a fascinating tale of the creation, production, and continuing repercussions of this seminal work. Diane Arbus (born and died in New York, 1923–1971) is one of the towering figures of twentieth-century art. In the fortyfive years since her death, her singular achievements have been celebrated by a host of major museum retrospectives throughout the world and by six posthumous publications, all of which have remained continuously in print since their publication, including Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), and Diane Arbus: Revelations (2003) . John P. Jacob is the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s McEvoy Family Curator for Photography. Previously, Jacob was vice president and director of the Inge Morath Foundation. Recent publications include Harlem Heroes: Photographs by Carl Van Vechten (2016), among others.

Public, Private, Secret explores the roles that photography and video play in the crafting of identity, and the reconfiguration of social conventions that define our public and private selves. This collection of essays, interviews, and reflections assesses how our image-making and consumption patterns are embedded and implicated in a wider matrix of online behavior and social codes, which in turn give images a life of their own. Within this context, our visual creations and online activities blur and remove conventional separations between public and private (and sometimes secret) expression. The writings address the various disruptions, resistances, and subversions that artists propose to the limited versions of race, gender, sexuality, and autonomy that populate mainstream popular culture. They anticipate a future for our image-world rich with diversity and alterity, one that can be shaped and influenced by the agency of self-representation. [#28#]

When Diane Arbus died in 1971 at the age of forty-eight, she was already a significant influence—even a legend—among serious photographers, although only a small number of her pictures were widely known. The publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph in 1972, and the posthumous retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, offered the public its first encounter with Arbus’s achievements. The response was unprecedented and nearly fifty years has not diminished the impact of these pictures; they penetrate the psyche with the force of a personal encounter, and transform the way we see the world.

“Diane Arbus was not a theorist but an artist. Her concern was not to buttress philosophical positions but to make pictures. First published in 1986, the hardcover and paperback reissues are essential for every photo library A contemporary classic with images masterfully reproduced from original transparencies
The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is a visual diary chronicling the struggle for intimacy and understanding between friends, family, and lovers— collectively described by Nan Goldin as her “tribe.” Her work describes a world that is visceral, charged, and seething with life. First published in 1986, this reissue recognizes the persistent relevance and freshness of Goldin’s cutting-edge photography. Nan Goldin (born in Washington, DC, 1953) began photographing at the age of fifteen. She received a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1977. In 1978 she moved to New York, where she continued to document her “extended family.” These photographs, along with those taken in London, Berlin, and Provincetown, Massachusetts, became the subject of her slide show and first book, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (Aperture, 1986). Goldin’s other books include The Other Side (1993), Ten Years After (1997), and The Beautiful Smile (2008).

The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility and freedom, discovery and escape—a place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The Open Road is the first book to explore the photographic road trip as a genre. Each chapter explores one body of work in depth through informative texts and a portfolio of images, beginning with Robert Frank, and including such renowned work as Garry Winogrand’s 1964, Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects, William Eggleston’s Los Alamos, and Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi. An exciting new look at one of the country’s most important photography collections 131 objects beautifully reproduced as full-page illustrations, published together for the first time An essential addition to scholarship on the medium
Begun in the early 1970s, the photography collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art is one of the finest in the country, numbering over twelve thousand works and spanning the history of photography from the early 1840s to the present. Looking Again provides a glimpse into both the collection at the museum, and photography’s complexity in a broader sense. Through 131 beautifully reproduced objects and accompanying essays, this volume addresses long-held beliefs and offers new ways of thinking about, and looking at, photographs. An additional text details the history of photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art, beginning with the first photography exhibition presented at the museum in 1918. Russell Lord is the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He has written and lectured widely on almost every movement in the history of photography.
“As the world moves increasingly toward an image-dependent style of communication, there has never been a better time to seriously examine our belief in or apprehension toward the photographic image. . . . we submit these examples from our collection and invite you to look—and then look again." –Russell Lord [#49#]

Monographs and Photobook Classics No art library should be considered complete without Aperture’s classic photobooks— from the very first title published by Aperture, Edward Weston’s Flame of Recognition, to Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, now in print for more than forty years; from contemporary classics such as Sally Mann’s Immediate Family and Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency to the remastered and expanded edition of Josef Koudelka’s Gypsies. In addition to these perennially best-selling books, Aperture continues to publish innovative monographs by leading photographers and up-and-coming artists who are shaping the language of photography for the future. These range from surveys by contemporary masters to “First Books” by younger artists, produced with equal care alongside publications that spotlight previously under-recognized treasures from the medium’s history.

Diane Arbus Diane Arbus (born and died in New York City, 1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of photographic portraiture—and of the medium itself. In a letter of recommendation, her mentor, Lisette Model, said of her, “Photographers can be good, bad, excellent, first rate, or tops, but there are hardly any artists among them. Here is an exception.” Aperture was the first to publish her work in book form; since its first publication in 1972, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph has been published in five languages and today its print run exceeds 450,000. It is acknowledged as a timeless classic and remains the foundation of her international reputation. Penetrating the psyche with all the force of a personal encounter, Arbus’s photographs transform the way we see the world and the people in it.

Marvin Israel (1924–1984) was a painter, art director, graphic designer, and influential teacher. “Diane Arbus was not a theorist but an artist. Her concern was not to buttress philosophical positions but to make pictures. She loved photography for the miracles it performs every day by accident, and respected it for the precise intentional tool that it could be, given talent, intelligence, dedication, and discipline.” —John Szarkowski

Josef Koudelka Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka (born in Moravia, Czech Republic, 1938) has been praised for what Sean O’Hagan from the Guardian calls “an eye for telling detail and a formal mastery that, even in his snatched reportage, seems uncanny in its compositional brilliance.” Koudelka first came to international attention for his fearless documentation of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which was initially published anonymously in order to protect his identity. (This extraordinary body of work was published as a book for the first time as Invasion 68: Prague in 2008.) Since the 1980s, Aperture has been part of a consortium of international publishers who have supported his work via its publication, including the masterful new edition of Gypsies (1986/2011). Koudelka continues to photograph around the world; his most recent publication, Wall (2013), focuses on the Israel-Palestine border.

A disquieting monograph of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Prague Features nearly 250 images that were smuggled out of Czechoslovakia Essential for anyone interested in war photography

In 1968, Josef Koudelka was an acclaimed thirty-year-old theater photographer who had never photographed a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded Prague, ending Czechoslovakia’s short-lived political liberalization, the Prague Spring. This series of photographs was smuggled out of the country and distributed in New York by Magnum Photos, anonymously to avoid reprisals. Sixteen years would pass before Koudelka could safely acknowledge authorship. Today, nearly fifty years later, their transformative quality still resonates. A compelling introduction, document selection, and chronology by three Czech writers provides a nuanced examination of the invasion.

Sally Mann Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed in the American South since the 1970s, producing ethereal landscapes and evocative portraits of her children and husband, and is committed to addressing themes such as death and cultural perceptions of sexuality. As critic David Levi Strauss contends, Mann approaches taboo subjects “forthrightly, with uncommon respect, tenderness, and compassion.” Immediate Family, originally published in 1992 to critical acclaim, helped establish her as one of the most prominent and fearless contemporary photographers. A hugely influential book, it has been a perennial best-seller for over twenty-five years.

Mary Ellen Mark Mary Ellen Mark (born in Philadelphia, 1940; died in New York, 2015) produced a number of images that have become landmarks in the field of documentary and concerned photography. As Melissa Harris, Aperture’s editor-at-large, has noted, “Mary Ellen lived hungrily, fully. . . . She was great with her subjects—working so intuitively— and was able to get at the essence of the people she was photographing to tell their stories. It mattered to her to represent them faithfully and truly, and not just in the documentary visual sense, but distinguishing each individual for whom he or she really was in the world. Her work is humane, all heart.”

Alex Webb A beloved member of Magnum Photos and master of color photography, Alex Webb (born in San Francisco, 1952) has commented that “although my photographs are often described as complicated, my actual process as a street photographer is pretty simple. I sense, almost ‘smell’ the possibility of a photograph. I try to follow the rhythm of the streets, sometimes walking through situations, sometimes hanging out. It all depends on what the world gives me on a particular day. This way of working reminds me of what a teacher of mine, Charles Harbutt, once wrote: ‘I don’t take pictures, pictures take me … I can do nothing except have film in the camera and be alert.’”

A selection of essays by a leading voice in photography criticism casts new light on the work of the medium’s masters, including Walker Evans, Brassaï, and Diane Arbus, as well as contemporary trailblazers such as Eleanor Antin and Martin Parr. Vicki Goldberg is the author of The Power of Photography (1991). In 1997, she received the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award.
Philip Gefter postulates that photography post– Robert Frank has created a paradoxical selfconsciousness. While the photographic image has brought us a heightened awareness of the world around us, the constant representation of who we are has conspired against our natural state of innocence.
