Welcome to Aperture 2019 Aperture is committed to enriching conversations about photography, and with the Aperture Workshop series, we distill the creative approach, teachings, and insights of the world’s most influential photographers, offering their workshop experience in a book. This fall, we are thrilled to add Dawoud Bey on Photographing People and Communities to the series. He discusses intention within the book: “I hope the work I do is deep and meaningful beyond the photographs. I am trying to create a conversation about the human community and with the human community. I intend for the work in some large or small way to transform the viewer.” His words apply perfectly to our endeavors at Aperture. Our magazine and books all nourish our conversations within and about our communities. In this fall’s The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent characterizes a movement of young photographers of color, now taking the fashion world by storm—dynamically reinventing visual language while simultaneously speaking to issues of race and representation. The work in this book reflects not only new aesthetic directions in photography, but also a profound contribution by photographers to an evolving social conversation about how we imagine ourselves. Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb’s newest collaboration, Brooklyn: The City Within, describes a gloriously diverse Brooklyn, a unique city that reflects every culture in the world. The photographs are dazzling, but behind them is a powerful and simple idea—that we might all be great neighbors to each other, wherever in the world we originate from. Meanwhile, in Provincetown, Joel Meyerowitz’s brilliant, previously unpublished 1970s photographs from the Cape Cod fishing village, he describes a radical community inventing future paradigms for life, anticipating the tolerance the rest of us now strive for. We continue to gather and feed ideas back to the community of photographers whose art and ideas drive Aperture. Much like The Photographer’s Playbook, PhotoWork: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice provides secrets and tools for everybody who wants to develop their practice and careers as image-makers. Aperture is a vibrant and growing community, energized by these conversations. Please join us! —Chris Boot, Executive Director

In a time of hyperactive communication, unending consumerism, and political confusion, Wolfgang Tillmans guest-edits an issue of Aperture on the subject of spirituality. This issue, featuring contributions by artists and scientists, as well as religious and spiritual leaders, will look at the different ways photography has been used to represent the nontangible, the inexplicable, and humanity’s longing for spiritual connection. Earth

Orlando

Earth focuses on our relationship with the natural world, during continued debate about global warming and extreme weather, and as the vulnerability of our environment is underscored each day. As we enter the anthropocene, the term used by scientists to describe an age when human activity has the greatest impact on the earth, what is the role of the artist in addressing this crisis?

Guest-edited by Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton guest-edits the Orlando issue of Aperture, which draws upon Virginia Woolf’s classic 1928 novel to offer a collection of images and writings that celebrate artistic freedom, limitlessness, and nonbinary ways of being.

The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion

By Antwaun Sargent Photographs by Campbell Addy, Arielle Bobb-Willis, Micaiah Carter, Awol Erizku, Nadine Ijewere, Quil Lemons, Namsa Leuba, Renell Medrano, Tyler Mitchell, Jamal Nxedlana, Daniel Obasi, Ruth Ossai, Adrienne Raquel, Dana Scruggs, and Stephen Tayo • • •

A must-have lookbook of the photographers reshaping fashion photography today The first book exclusively focused on the impact of black artists working in the fashion world Edited and introduced by a leading voice in the art and fashion fields

In The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent addresses a radical transformation taking place in fashion and art today. The presentaion of black figures and black runway and cover models in the media and art has been one marker of increasingly inclusive fashion and art communities. More critically, however, the contemporary visual vocabulary around beauty and the body has been reinfused with new vitality and substance thanks to an increase in powerful images authored by an international community of black photographers. In a richly illustrated essay, Sargent opens up the conversation around the role of the black body in the marketplace; the cross-pollination between art, fashion, and culture in constructing an image; and the institutional barriers that have historically been an impediment to black photographers participating more fully in the fashion (and art) industries. Fifteen artist portfolios feature the brightest contemporary fashion photographers. Alongside a series of conversations between generations, their images and stories chart the history of inclusion, and exclusion, in the creation of the commercial black image, while simultaneously proposing a brilliantly reenvisioned future. Antwaun Sargent is an independent writer, curator, and critic whose work has been published in the New Yorker, New York Times, W, Vogue, VICE, and various museum catalogues, among other publications.

Never-before-published photographs by a master of the medium A visual time capsule of a storied LGBTQ community Crossover appeal to both art and fashion audiences

The beach town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, has long been defined by outsiders. A safe haven for the queer community and a getaway for artists, it is a place defined by openness and tolerance. Throughout the late 1970s and early ’80s Joel Meyerowitz spent his summers there, roaming the seaside with an 8-by-10 camera, making exquisite, sharply observed portraits of families, couples, children, artists, and other denizens of the progressive community. A cast of characters appear and reappear from season to season against a picturesque backdrop of sea, sand, and sun. Provincetown collects one hundred portraits, most never before published, bringing viewers into an idyllic world of self-styled individualism. Joel Meyerowitz (born in New York, 1938) is an awardwinning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He is a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, a recipient of both National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and a recipient of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, and has published over fifteen books, including his Aperture titles Legacy (2009), Cape Light (2015), and Seeing Things (2016). Much-anticipated new work by internationally acclaimed photographers Celebrates a global city, through Brooklyn’s vibrant and diverse neighborhoods Destined to be a favorite for lovers of photography and New York alike

Brooklyn is one of the most dynamic and ethnically diverse places on the planet. In fact, it’s estimated that one in every eight US families had relatives come through Brooklyn when settling in the country. Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb have been photographing this New York City borough for the past seven years, creating a profound and vibrant portrait. Alex Webb has traversed every corner of the borough, exploring its tremendous diversity. This parallels his work made in the past forty years, traveling to photograph different cultures around the world—all of which are represented in the place he now calls home. Contrasting with this approach, Rebecca Norris Webb photographed “the city within the city within the city,” the green heart of Brooklyn—the Botanic Garden, GreenWood Cemetery, and Prospect Park, where Brooklynites of all walks of life cross paths as they find solace. Together, their photographs of Brooklyn tell a larger American story, one that touches on immigration, identity, and home.

Webb became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has been shown widely and he has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 and the Leica Medal of Excellence in 2000. Rebecca Norris Webb (born in Rushville, Indiana, 1956), originally a poet, has published three photography books that explore the complicated relationship between people and the natural world: The Glass Between Us (2006), Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (2009, with Alex Webb), and My Dakota (2012). Her work has been exhibited extensively and has appeared in the New Yorker, Time, National Geographic, and Le Monde magazine.

Insider advice and insights from leading photo practitioners Fun, required reading for photographers and creatives of all ages Affordable gift book for any photography and art lover

How does a photographic project or series evolve? How important are “style” and “genre”? What comes first—the photographs or a concept? PhotoWork is a collection of interviews by forty photographers about their approach to making photographs and, more important, a sustained body of work. Curator and lecturer Sasha Wolf was inspired to seek out and assemble responses to these questions after hearing from countless young photographers about how they often feel adrift in their own practice, wondering if they are doing it the “right” way. The responses, from both established and newly emerging photographers, reveal there is no single path. Their advice is wildly divergent, generous, and delightful: Justine Kurland discusses the importance of allowing a narrative to unravel; Doug DuBois reflects on the process of growing into one’s own work; Dawoud Bey evokes musicians such as Miles Davis as his inspiration for never wanting to become “my own oldies show.” The book is structured through a Proust-like questionnaire, in which individuals are each asked the same set of questions, creating a typology of responses that allows for an intriguing compare and contrast. Sasha Wolf represents emerging and midcareer fine-art photographers as a private practice, following a decade of running Sasha Wolf Gallery. Prior to her work in the fine-art photography world, Wolf was a writer, director, and producer in the film and television industries. Her short film Joe (1997) was nominated for the Palme d’Or du court métrage at Cannes. Q&A-style interviews by Robert Adams, Dawoud Bey, Alejandro Cartagena, Elinor Carucci, John Chiara, Kelli Connell, Lois Conner, Matthew Connors, Siân Davey, Doug DuBois, John Edmonds, Paul Graham, Katy Grannan, Gregory Halpern, Curran Hatleberg, Todd Hido, Rinko Kawauchi, Peter Kayafas, Justine Kurland, Gillian Laub, John Lehr, Dana Lixenberg, Andrew Moore, Abelardo Morell, Catherine Opie, Ed Panar, Matthew Pillsbury, Kristine Potter, Gus Powell, Richard Renaldi, Sasha Rudensky, Lise Sarfati, Bryan Schutmaat, Manjari Sharma, Dayanita Singh, Tiffany Smith, Alec Soth, Mark Steinmetz, and Vanessa Winship

“I make my photographs in order to provoke a conversation around those things that I am invested in. The challenge is how to give those concerns a resonant and coherent form so that the viewer becomes interested and invested.” —Dawoud Bey

Thirtieth-Anniversary Edition Photographs and commentary by Sally Mann Introduction by Ann Beattie • • •

Thirtieth-anniversary edition of a groundbreaking classic The precursor to Mann's best-selling monograph Immediate Family Beautifully reissued with all-new reproductions

First published by Aperture in 1988, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women is a contemporary classic by one of photography’s great artists. To mark the book’s thirtieth anniversary, Aperture is reoriginating it in a masterful facsimile edition that retains the pure spirit of the original. At Twelve is Sally Mann’s revealing, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls on the verge of adulthood. To be young and female in America is a time of tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction, “These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose—what adults make of that pose may be the issue.” The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. The young women in Mann’s unflinching, large-format photographs, however, are not victims. They return the viewer’s gaze with a disturbing equanimity. Poet Jonathan Williams writes, “Sally Mann’s girls are the ones who do the hard looking in At Twelve—be up to it!” This reissue of At Twelve has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann’s prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a freshness and sumptuousness true to the original edition.

Exhibition Schedule A Thousand Crossings Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, March 3–May 27, 2019 Jeu de Paume, Paris, June 17– September 22, 2019

“Sally Mann’s photography is a clear pane . . . not intrusion, but revelation. These young women distill something for the eye . . . something beautiful and sad and moving, something purely female.” —Diane Sawyer

Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed the American South since the 1970s. A Guggenheim fellow and three-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, Mann was named America’s Best Photographer by Time magazine in 2001. She has been the subject of two documentaries and her work has been the subject of major exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Mann’s other Aperture books are Immediate Family (1992, reissued 2014), Still Time (1994), Proud Flesh (copublished with Gagosian Gallery, 2009), and The Flesh and The Spirit (copublished with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 2010). Ann Beattie has been included in four O. Henry Prize collections. She has received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and the Rea Award for the Short Story, and she was the Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Seeing Science offers an insightful and reader-friendly collection of essays and pictures about photography’s role in visualizing science and building human knowledge—from micro to macro levels and everything in between. Photography and science have long been intertwined, helping to shape the way we look at the world. Scientists use photography as a way to gather information, explore, and learn, but just as important, photography is also used to promote scientific advances and has long served as an interface between the sciences and the public. Science is less an edifice of facts than a process of discovery and inquiry. In this way, it is not dissimilar to art; artists have engaged with some of the same scientific challenges and principles, using photography to imagine the world differently and present us with new experiences and ways of seeing. This volume presents both perspectives, exploring how science is made perceptible, featuring over three hundred images and sixty short texts.

Powerful portraits from the 1960s “Black Is Beautiful” movement Accessible fusion of fashion, art, and social history The first book on this influential African American photographer, now being widely recognized

In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Kwame Brathwaite used his photography to popularize the political slogan “Black Is Beautiful.” This monograph—the first ever dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career—tells the story of a key, but under-recognized, figure of the second Harlem Renaissance. From stunning studio portraits of the Grandassa Models to behind-the-scenes images of Harlem’s artistic community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis, this book offers a long-overdue exploration of Brathwaite’s life and work. In addition, a touring retrospective of Brathwaite’s work will begin in May 2019. Kwame Brathwaite (born in Brooklyn, 1938) is represented by Philip Martin in Los Angeles. Recent acquirers of his work include the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Foreword by Hari Nef Essay by Michael Schulman • • •

Classical black-and-white portraits envision the queer youth of New York Hot art and fashion photographer redefines beauty and the human family Establishes Green as a prominent artist for a new generation

Young New York, Ethan James Green’s first monograph, presents a selection of striking portraits of New York’s millennial scene-makers, a gloriously diverse cast of models, artists, nightlife icons, queer youth, and gender binary–flouting muses of the fashion world and beyond. Although he often shoots on commission for fashion brands and magazines, for Young New York, Green photographed his close friends and community for more than three years, and his humanist approach transcends the trends of the moment. Young New York promises to announce a bright young talent who is redefining beauty and identity for a new generation. Ethan James Green (born in Caledonia, Michigan, 1990) has been commissioned by publications such as Another Man, Dazed & Confused, Re-Edition, Love Magazine, i-D, Arena Homme +, Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, W, and labels, including Alexander McQueen, Miu Miu, and Prada. His work was featured in and on the cover of Aperture’s Winter 2017 issue, Future Gender. Hari Nef is an actress, model, and writer based in Los Angeles. Michael Schulman is an arts editor and regular contributor to the New Yorker, and the author of Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep (2016).

“In Ethan’s world, the kids who inspire him ought to be (and are) the subjects of his work. Ethan is an artist among so-called image makers.” —Hari Nef

Photographs and texts by Gail Albert Halaban Essay by Francine Prose • • •

Timeless and contemporary, a romantic vision of Italy Highly anticipated new work by a popular artist A perfect coffee-table gift for lovers of Italy and photography

Italian Views is a continuation of Gail Albert Halaban’s series Out My Window, featuring intimate domestic portraits against the cinematic backdrop of the city. Albert Halaban works with local residents to stage and collaborate on each portrait, and through her lens, the viewer is welcomed into the private lives of ordinary Italian people. Paired with the photographs are short vignettes by the artist, imagining what the neighbors might see of her subjects on a daily basis, and Francine Prose contributes a meditative essay discussing the curious thrill of being a viewer. Gail Albert Halaban (born in Washington, DC, 1970) received an MFA in photography from Yale University. She has taught at the Pasadena Art Center, International Center of Photography, and Yale, and has been included in both group and solo exhibitions internationally. Her previous books include Out My Window (2012) and Gail Albert Halaban: Paris Views (Aperture, 2014). Francine Prose is the author of more than twenty books, including the novels My New American Life (2011), Goldengrove (2008), A Changed Man (2005), and Blue Angel (2000), which was a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award.

Essay by Rachel Kushner • •

Porter’s popular “flying cars” series, now in book form Fun artist’s book, where Stephen Shore meets Steve McQueen

Matthew Porter presents a portfolio of twenty-five images of old-school cars, captured in midair as they careen over city streets and highway intersections. Each photograph is a freeze-frame—a hypothetical film still from a pulp-fiction chase scene. The photographs, known popularly as the “flying car” series, are a hybrid of hyperreality and studied, topographic description, part bittersweet nostalgia and part ironic reinvention of a classic American trope. Rachel Kushner contributes an original piece of writing that riffs on the aesthetic and aspirational nature of the American car. Matthew Porter (born in State College, Pennsylvania, 1975) is a graduate of Bard College and of the ICP-Bard MFA Program in Advanced Photographic Studies, New York. His work was included in Photography Is Magic (Aperture, 2015), and his first book, Archipelago, was published in 2015. Porter’s work is represented by M+B, Los Angeles; Invisible-Exports, New York; and Xippas Gallery, Paris.

“The photographs delight and mystify.” —David Segal, New York Times

Rachel Kushner’s titles include Telex from Cuba (2008), The Flamethrowers (2013), and most recently, The Mars Room (2018). She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013.

Photobook Classics No art library should be considered complete without Aperture’s classic photobooks— from the very first title published by Aperture, Edward Weston’s Flame of Recognition, to Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, now in print for more than forty years; from contemporary classics such as Sally Mann’s Immediate Family and Nan Goldin’s Ballad of Sexual Dependency to the remastered and expanded edition of Josef Koudelka’s Gypsies. In addition to these perennially best-selling books, Aperture continues to publish innovative monographs by leading photographers and up-and-coming artists who are shaping the language of photography for the future. These range from surveys by contemporary masters to “First Books” by younger artists, produced with equal care alongside publications that spotlight previously under-recognized treasures from the medium’s history.

Diane Arbus Diane Arbus (born and died in New York City, 1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of photographic portraiture—and of the medium itself. In a letter of recommendation, her mentor, Lisette Model, said of her, “Photographers can be good, bad, excellent, first rate, or tops, but there are hardly any artists among them. Here is an exception.” Aperture was the first to publish her work in book form; since its first publication in 1972, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph has been published in five languages and today its print run exceeds 450,000. It is acknowledged as a timeless classic and remains the foundation of her international reputation. Penetrating the psyche with all the force of a personal encounter, Arbus’s photographs transform the way we see the world and the people in it.

Rinko Kawauchi Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi (born in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, 1972) has developed an international cult-following for her work and for her photobooks, many of which remain difficult to find or are out of print. This trio of books showcases the evolution of her work—from her use of the square format to focus on the minute details of the everyday, as exemplified in Illuminance (2009), to her recent experiments with medium format and a concentration on broader, spiritual themes, as in Ametsuchi (2013) and Halo (2017).

Josef Koudelka Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka (born in Moravia, Czech Republic, 1938) has been praised for what Sean O’Hagan from the Guardian calls “an eye for telling detail and a formal mastery that, even in his snatched reportage, seems uncanny in its compositional brilliance.” Koudelka first came to international attention for his fearless documentation of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which was initially published anonymously in order to protect his identity. (This extraordinary body of work was published as a book for the first time as Invasion 68: Prague in 2008.) Since the 1980s, Aperture has been part of a consortium of international publishers who have supported his work via its publication, including the masterful new edition of Gypsies (1986/2011). Koudelka continues to photograph around the world; his most recent publication, Wall (2013), focuses on the Israel-Palestine border.

Invasion 68: Prague

Introduction and document selection by Jaroslav Cuhra, Jiří Hoppe, and Jiří Suk Afterword by Irena Šorfová • • •

A disquieting monograph of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Prague Features nearly 250 images that were smuggled out of Czechoslovakia Essential for anyone interested in war photography

In 1968, Josef Koudelka was an acclaimed thirty-year-old theater photographer who had never photographed a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded Prague, ending Czechoslovakia’s short-lived political liberalization, the Prague Spring. This series of photographs was smuggled out of the country and distributed in New York by Magnum Photos, anonymously to avoid reprisals. Sixteen years would pass before Koudelka could safely acknowledge authorship. Today, fifty years later, their transformative quality still resonates. A compelling introduction, document selection, and chronology by three Czech writers provides a nuanced examination of the invasion.

Sally Mann Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed in the American South since the 1970s, producing ethereal landscapes and evocative portraits of her children and husband, and is committed to addressing themes such as death and cultural perceptions of sexuality. As critic David Levi Strauss contends, Mann approaches taboo subjects “forthrightly, with uncommon respect, tenderness, and compassion.” Immediate Family, originally published in 1992 to critical acclaim, helped establish her as one of the most prominent and fearless contemporary photographers. A hugely influential book, it has been a perennial best seller for over twenty-five years.

Mary Ellen Mark Mary Ellen Mark (born in Philadelphia, 1940; died in New York, 2015) produced a number of images that have become landmarks in the field of documentary and concerned photography. As Melissa Harris, Aperture’s editor-at-large, has noted, “Mary Ellen lived hungrily, fully. . . . She was great with her subjects—working so intuitively— and was able to get at the essence of the people she was photographing to tell their stories. It mattered to her to represent them faithfully and truly, and not just in the documentary visual sense, but distinguishing each individual for whom he or she really was in the world. Her work is humane, all heart.”

Alex Webb A beloved member of Magnum Photos and master of color photography, Alex Webb (born in San Francisco, 1952) has commented that “although my photographs are often described as complicated, my actual process as a street photographer is pretty simple. I sense, almost ‘smell’ the possibility of a photograph. I try to follow the rhythm of the streets, sometimes walking through situations, sometimes hanging out. It all depends on what the world gives me on a particular day. This way of working reminds me of what a teacher of mine, Charles Harbutt, once wrote: ‘I don’t take pictures, pictures take me … I can do nothing except have film in the camera and be alert.’”
