Welcome to Aperture 2019 Aperture is committed to enriching conversations about photography, and with the Aperture Workshop series, we distill the creative approach, teachings, and insights of the world’s most influential photographers, offering their workshop experience in a book. This fall, we are thrilled to add Dawoud Bey on Photographing People and Communities to the series. He discusses intention within the book: “I hope the work I do is deep and meaningful beyond the photographs. I am trying to create a conversation about the human community and with the human community. I intend for the work in some large or small way to transform the viewer.” His words apply perfectly to our endeavors at Aperture. Our magazine and books all nourish our conversations within and about our communities. In this fall’s The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent characterizes a movement of young photographers of color, now taking the fashion world by storm—dynamically reinventing visual language while simultaneously speaking to issues of race and representation. The work in this book reflects not only new aesthetic directions in photography, but also a profound contribution by photographers to an evolving social conversation about how we imagine ourselves. Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb’s newest collaboration, Brooklyn: The City Within, describes a gloriously diverse Brooklyn, a unique city that reflects every culture in the world. In The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent addresses a radical transformation taking place in fashion and art today. The presentaion of black figures and black runway and cover models in the media and art has been one marker of increasingly inclusive fashion and art communities. More critically, however, the contemporary visual vocabulary around beauty and the body has been reinfused with new vitality and substance thanks to an increase in powerful images authored by an international community of black photographers. In a richly illustrated essay, Sargent opens up the conversation around the role of the black body in the marketplace; the cross-pollination between art, fashion, and culture in constructing an image; and the institutional barriers that have historically been an impediment to black photographers participating more fully in the fashion (and art) industries. Fifteen artist portfolios feature the brightest contemporary fashion photographers. Alongside a series of conversations between generations, their images and stories chart the history of inclusion, and exclusion, in the creation of the commercial black image, while simultaneously proposing a brilliantly reenvisioned future. Antwaun Sargent is an independent writer, curator, and critic whose work has been published in the New Yorker, New York Times, W, Vogue, VICE, and various museum catalogues, among other publications.

Alex Webb (born in San Francisco, 1952) has published more than a dozen books, including Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (2009, with Rebecca Norris Webb), and the Aperture titles Istanbul (2007), The Suffering of Light (2011), and La Calle (2016). Webb became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has been shown widely and he has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 and the Leica Medal of Excellence in 2000. Rebecca Norris Webb (born in Rushville, Indiana, 1956), originally a poet, has published three photography books that explore the complicated relationship between people and the natural world: The Glass Between Us (2006), Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (2009, with Alex Webb), and My Dakota (2012). Her work has been exhibited extensively and has appeared in the New Yorker, Time, National Geographic, and Le Monde magazine.

How does a photographic project or series evolve? How important are “style” and “genre”? What comes first—the photographs or a concept? PhotoWork is a collection of interviews by forty photographers about their approach to making photographs and, more important, a sustained body of work. Curator and lecturer Sasha Wolf was inspired to seek out and assemble responses to these questions after hearing from countless young photographers about how they often feel adrift in their own practice, wondering if they are doing it the “right” way. The responses, from both established and newly emerging photographers, reveal there is no single path. Their advice is wildly divergent, generous, and delightful: Justine Kurland discusses the importance of allowing a narrative to unravel; Doug DuBois reflects on the process of growing into one’s own work; Dawoud Bey evokes musicians such as Miles Davis as his inspiration for never wanting to become “my own oldies show.” The book is structured through a Proust-like questionnaire, in which individuals are each asked the same set of questions, creating a typology of responses that allows for an intriguing compare and contrast. Sasha Wolf represents emerging and midcareer fine-art photographers as a private practice, following a decade of running Sasha Wolf Gallery. Prior to her work in the fine-art photography world, Wolf was a writer, director, and producer in the film and television industries. Her short film Joe (1997) was nominated for the Palme d’Or du court métrage at Cannes. This mini paperback edition of Gypsies makes a foundational body of work by master photographer Josef Koudelka newly accessible. This volume includes all 109 photographs from Koudelka’s recent remastering of the Cikáni series (Czech for Gypsies)—photographs of Roma society taken between 1962 and 1971 in then-Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. Roma scholar and sociologist Will Guy, who wrote for both the 1975 and 2011 editions, updates his analysis of the condition of the Roma today, including the most recent upheavals in France and Europe. Stuart Alexander, photo historian and newly appointed editor in chief of Delpire Éditeur, contributes a brief historiography of the evolution of this body of work in book form. Josef Koudelka (born in Moravia, Czech Republic, 1938) has received the Prix Nadar, Grand Prix National de la Photographie, HCB Award, and Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. A member of Magnum Photos, he is based in Paris and Prague. Stuart Alexander is editor in chief at Delpire Éditeur, Paris. First published by Aperture in 1988, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women is a contemporary classic by one of photography’s great artists. To mark the book’s thirtieth anniversary, Aperture is reoriginating it in a masterful facsimile edition that retains the pure spirit of the original. At Twelve is Sally Mann’s revealing, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls on the verge of adulthood. To be young and female in America is a time of tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction, “These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose—what adults make of that pose may be the issue.” The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. The young women in Mann’s unflinching, large-format photographs, however, are not victims. They return the viewer’s gaze with a disturbing equanimity. Poet Jonathan Williams writes, “Sally Mann’s girls are the ones who do the hard looking in At Twelve—be up to it!” This reissue of At Twelve has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann’s prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a freshness and sumptuousness true to the original edition.

Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed the American South since the 1970s. A Guggenheim fellow and three-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, Mann was named America’s Best Photographer by Time magazine in 2001. She has been the subject of two documentaries and her work has been the subject of major exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Mann’s other Aperture books are Immediate Family (1992, reissued 2014), Still Time (1994), Proud Flesh (copublished with Gagosian Gallery, 2009), and The Flesh and The Spirit (copublished with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 2010). Ann Beattie has been included in four O. Henry Prize collections. She has received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story and the Rea Award for the Short Story, and she was the Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He is the author/editor of over two dozen books, including Photography Changes Everything (Aperture/Smithsonian, 2012). Scott Kelly is a retired NASA astronaut best known for spending a record-breaking year in space. He is a former US Navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and veteran of four spaceflights. Kelly commanded the space shuttle Endeavour in 2007 and commanded the International Space Station for three expeditions.

Seeing Science offers an insightful and reader-friendly collection of essays and pictures about photography’s role in visualizing science and building human knowledge—from micro to macro levels and everything in between. Photography and science have long been intertwined, helping to shape the way we look at the world. Scientists use photography as a way to gather information, explore, and learn, but just as important, photography is also used to promote scientific advances and has long served as an interface between the sciences and the public. Science is less an edifice of facts than a process of discovery and inquiry. In this way, it is not dissimilar to art; artists have engaged with some of the same scientific challenges and principles, using photography to imagine the world differently and present us with new experiences and ways of seeing. This volume presents both perspectives, exploring how science is made perceptible, featuring over three hundred images and sixty short texts.

Matthew Porter presents a portfolio of twenty-five images of old-school cars, captured in midair as they careen over city streets and highway intersections. In honor of Erwin Olaf’s sixtieth birthday, Erwin Olaf: I Am presents the first comprehensive survey of his work, bringing together his earliest images in black and white with his now-iconic color work, including selections from his most recent and heretofore unpublished series shot in Shanghai and Palm Springs. This chronological presentation traces the evolution of the artist from cheeky provocateur to royal portraitist, as well as the refinement of his unique vision and stylistic panache over the last four decades. The book is published to accompany the largest retrospective of his work to date, a multiple-venue show that will encompass installations at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Gemeentemuseum Den Haag; and Fotomuseum Den Haag. Erwin Olaf (born in Hilversum, the Netherlands, 1959) is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Johannes Vermeer Award (2011), a Lucie Award (2008), and Photographer of the Year in the International Color Awards (2006). Among other accolades, Olaf received the commission to design the new national side of the Dutch Euro, launched in 2013. In 2008 and 2014 Aperture published volumes one and two of Olaf’s self-titled monograph. Mattie Boom is curator of photography at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Francis Hodgson is professor in the culture of photography at the University of Brighton, UK, and confounder of the Prix Pictet; W. Stephen Shore Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers. For the youngest working today, his series such as American Surfaces and Uncommon Places remain ongoing and indisputable reference points. Shore had his own work purchased by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art at the age of fourteen. At seventeen, he was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory, producing an important photographic document of the scene, and in 1971, at the age of twentyfour, he became the first living photographer since Alfred Stieglitz forty years earlier to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
