Welcome to Aperture 2017 With each season of Aperture books, we hope you feel the story of photography vigorously coursing forward, with the medium’s most dynamic voices—the artists creating visual language and shaping photography’s future—balanced by new perspectives on its past. For Fall 2017, we are honored to present books by artists we deem photography’s most compelling talents. John Chiara’s gorgeous, asymmetrical depictions of his native California reinvent the possibilities of the landscape photograph. Fresh looks at the story of photography include Fashion Photography: The Story in 160 Pictures, and Lyle Ashton Harris’s journal-turned-artist book about the 1980s, describing a new queer, multiculturalism in art, as its contours began to emerge. The past speaks to the future in four books this season by Magnum photographers, in the year of the photo co-op’s seventieth anniversary. We feature a leading thinker about documentary practice, Susan Meiselas, revealing the thought processes behind all her major series; projects by two newer member-photographers, reshaping Magnum’s vision today—Jonas Bendiksen and Alessandra Sanguinetti; and a witty side glance at the power of the iconic photograph, in a delightful coloring book by Magnum maestro Martin Parr. Anchoring our list as usual, sixty-five years since it was first published, Aperture magazine continues to explore themes of how photographers have shaped and are shaping our social imagination, with issues about style and transgender identity. Perhaps not what Minor White might have imagined Aperture addressing as he edited the first issue of the magazine, but we think he’d approve! —Chris Boot, Executive Director

The Style Issue
Future Gender
Aperture’s Style Issue investigates the role of style, dress, and beauty in the formation of individual identity. From the stunning studio work of Kwame Brathwaite, the Harlem-based photographer who advanced the potent political slogan “Black Is Beautiful,” to Collier Schorr’s representations of the queer community in fashion contexts, to Pieter Hugo’s portraits of young students at a Beijing art school, this issue reveals, across time and geographies, how fashion and style help us to see who we are and who we might become.
Aperture 229 will explore photography as it relates to transgender lives, histories, and communities. Guest edited by Zackary Drucker, the artist, activist, and producer of the television series Transparent, the issue will feature archival work and new images by leading contemporary photographers.

Aperture Magazine Edited by Michael Famighetti • • •
The world’s leading magazine that pairs great photography with in-depth writing Each issue stands on its own as an essential exploration of a key theme in photography Each issue has an individual ISBN, and shelves like a book
American Destiny How does the photographer navigate our new national order? As debates about the economic future of the United States continue into a controversial presidential administration, the spring issue, American Destiny, offers an urgent reflection on photography, labor, and community. From agricultural workers to those toiling on the factory floor, from regional cities weathering years of postindustrial decline to refugee populations assimilating into the heartland, the photographers featured in this issue are bound by a desire to reveal how lives are shaped by the ebb and flow of the economy. American Destiny maps geographies of economic promises unfulfilled, weighing how the interrelated factors of class, sexism, education, shifting demographics, racism, and stagnant wages have influenced social life in the United States.
Platform Africa Aperture takes a detailed look at the dynamic spaces that have shaped conversations about photography in Africa for the last twenty-five years—the biennials, experimental art spaces, and educational workshops in which artists and audiences interact with photography. Platform Africa presents a new generation of artists, and is produced in collaboration with guest editors Bisi Silva, founder and artistic director of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos, Nigeria; John Fleetwood, director of the South Africa–based platform Photo and former head of the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg; and Aïcha Diallo, associate editor of Contemporary And.

A raw, authentic visual journal from internationally acclaimed artist, Lyle Ashton Harris An artist’s guide to the emerging multicultural art world of the 1980s From Berlin to Baja, an intimate self-portrait of the artist as a young man
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, a radical cultural scene emerged in cities across the globe, finding expression in the galleries, nightclubs, and bedrooms of New York, London, Los Angeles, and Rome. In Lyle Ashton Harris: Today I Shall Judge Nothing That Occurs, the artist’s archive of 35 mm Ektachrome images are presented alongside journal entries and recollections by contributors, coalescing in a presentation of what Harris has described as “ephemeral moments and emblematic figures . . . against a backdrop of seismic shifts in the art world, the emergence of multiculturalism, the second wave of AIDS activism, and incipient globalization.” [!16!]

Alessandra Sanguinetti: Le Gendarme Sur La Colline Essay by Susan Bright • • • •
A new album of photographs of France at a time of social change Magnum member producing some of the most striking contemporary photographs today A poetic encounter with the cultural myths and tropes of France A great book for Francophiles and followers of contemporary photography
In this album, the compelling photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti explores her vision of France, in which old traditions persist even while they fray and shift in relation to contemporary stresses, including multiculturalism. The work presents an intuitive, often lyrical journey that is undercut with a sense of tension about what it means to be French— and to photograph the French—today. Le Gendarme Sur La Colline is the result of a major new commission by Fondation d’entreprise Hermès and Aperture Foundation. Called “Immersion,” the program seeks to expand artistic dialogue between France and the US, while investing in creativity, and providing a platform for an important emerging artist to create a major new body of work. Alessandra Sanguinetti (born in New York, 1968) is a recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Hasselblad Foundation grant, Robert Gardner Fellowship, and Arles Discovery Award. Her photographs are in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco. [!19!]

Introduction by Teju Cole
Now available in a new paperback edition, Richard Renaldi’s Touching Strangers is about the human desire to connect despite our differences. “Most photographers capture life as it is, but in these strangers, Richard Renaldi shows us humanity as it could be—as most of us wish it would be—and as it was, at least for this one fleeting moment in time.” —CBS News “Richard Renaldi is a matchmaker for tense times . . . ” —New York Times Lens Blog “Renaldi's unusual photographic formula reveals the unlikely ways the body and the heart can influence each other.” —Huffington Post “The viewer can’t help fabricating a story about the subjects’ relationship. We weave narratives around them—who they are, the unlikely tenderness that might exist between strangers. These counterfactuals force us to confront the limits of what we know, from our own experiences, to make up common social interactions.” —New York Times [!20!]

In Richard Renaldi’s fourth monograph, he describes his experiences as a young man in the late 1980s who had recently embraced his gay identity, and of finding a home in “the mystery and abandonment of the club, the nightscape, and then finally daybreak.” Through portraits, landscapes, and club interiors, Renaldi captures that moment when Saturday night turns into Sunday morning across the borough of Manhattan. Manhattan Sunday is a personal memoir that also offers a reflection of the city’s evolving identity. Richard Renaldi (born in Chicago, 1968) graduated from New York University with a BFA in photography in 1990. Other Aperture books by Renaldi include Touching Strangers (2014) and Figure and Ground (2006). In 2015, he was named a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow in Photography.

Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers. He is the director of the photography program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. A major retrospective of Shore’s work is planned to take place at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2017. Five linked short stories by Dave Eggers • • • •
A heartfelt portrait of minor league baseball players in pursuit of the American Dream Must-have for fans of photography and baseball Includes new short stories by best-selling author Dave Eggers The first art book by this Gen X cultural icon
9 781597 113854
In 2002, Tabitha Soren began photographing the draft class for the Oakland A’s—their lives on the road, and the grueling work behind the scenes required to make it to the major leagues. Soren has continued to photograph them ever since, documenting their divergent paths through success, heartbreak, and, sometimes, even fame. Accompanied by five linked short stories by Dave Eggers, Fantasy Life explores the enduring spirit of this quintessential American fantasy of making it in the major leagues. Tabitha Soren (born in San Antonio, Texas, 1967) left a successful career in television in 1999 to start a new one as a photographer. Her work is included in public collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, and Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco. She is represented by the Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles. Dave Eggers is a best-selling author whose recent books include Heroes of the Frontier (2016), Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? (2014), and A Hologram for the King (2012), which was a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award. He is also the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing company based in San Francisco.

Unique survey of Modernist photography through one of the world’s greatest collections of photography Coincided with major exhibition at Tate Modern, London Exclusive interview with Sir Elton John
Sir Elton John, musician and philanthropist, has built one of the greatest private collections of photography in the world. This book presents an unparalleled selection of modernist images, which introduce a crucial moment in the history of photography when artists were beginning to use the camera and darkroom to redefine and transform visions of the modern world. Technological advancements gave artists the freedom to experiment and test the limits of the medium, enabling new imaginings of portraits, nudes, and still lifes; and street life and the modern world were captured from a new, uniquely modern perspective.

Diane Arbus Diane Arbus (born and died in New York City, 1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of photographic portraiture—and of the medium itself. In a letter of recommendation, her mentor, Lisette Model, said of her, “Photographers can be good, bad, excellent, first rate, or tops, but there are hardly any artists among them. Here is an exception.” Aperture was the first to publish her work in book form; since its first publication in 1972, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph has been published in five languages and today its print run exceeds 450,000. It is acknowledged as a timeless classic and remains the foundation of her international reputation. Penetrating the psyche with all the force of a personal encounter, Arbus’s photographs transform the way we see the world and the people in it.

“Diane Arbus was not a theorist but an artist. Her concern was not to buttress philosophical positions but to make pictures. She loved photography for the miracles it performs every day by accident, and respected it for the precise intentional tool that it could be, given talent, intelligence, dedication, and discipline.” —John Szarkowski

Josef Koudelka Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka (born in Moravia, Czech Republic, 1938) has been praised for what Sean O’Hagan from the Guardian calls “an eye for telling detail and a formal mastery that, even in his snatched reportage, seems uncanny in its compositional brilliance.” Koudelka first came to international attention for his fearless documentation of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which was initially published anonymously in order to protect his identity. (This extraordinary body of work was published as a book for the first time as Invasion 68: Prague in 2008.) Since the 1980s, Aperture has been part of a consortium of international publishers who have supported his work via its publication, including the masterful new edition of Gypsies (1986/2011). Koudelka continues to photograph around the world; his most recent publication, Wall (2013), focuses on the Israel-Palestine border.

In 1968, Josef Koudelka was an acclaimed thirty-year-old theater photographer who had never photographed a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded Prague, ending Czechoslovakia’s short-lived political liberalization, the Prague Spring. This series of photographs was smuggled out of the country and distributed in New York by Magnum Photos, anonymously to avoid reprisals. Sixteen years would pass before Koudelka could safely acknowledge authorship. Today, nearly fifty years later, their transformative quality still resonates. A compelling introduction, document selection, and chronology by three Czech writers provides a nuanced examination of the invasion.

Sally Mann Sally Mann (born in Lexington, Virginia, 1951) has photographed in the American South since the 1970s, producing ethereal landscapes and evocative portraits of her children and husband, and is committed to addressing themes such as death and cultural perceptions of sexuality. As critic David Levi Strauss contends, Mann approaches taboo subjects “forthrightly, with uncommon respect, tenderness, and compassion.” Immediate Family, originally published in 1992 to critical acclaim, helped establish her as one of the most prominent and fearless contemporary photographers. A hugely influential book, it has been a perennial best-seller for over twenty-five years.

Mary Ellen Mark Mary Ellen Mark (born in Philadelphia, 1940; died in New York, 2015) produced a number of images that have become landmarks in the field of documentary and concerned photography. As Melissa Harris, Aperture’s editor-at-large, has noted, “Mary Ellen lived hungrily, fully . . . She was great with her subjects—working so intuitively—and was able to get at the essence of the people she was photographing to tell their stories. It mattered to her to represent them faithfully and truly, and not just in the documentary visual sense, but distinguishing each individual for whom he or she really was in the world. Her work is humane, all heart.”

Stephen Shore Stephen Shore (born in New York, 1947) has had a significant influence on more than one generation of artists and photographers. For the youngest working today, his series such as American Surfaces and Uncommon Places remain ongoing and indisputable reference points. Shore had his own work purchased by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art at the age of fourteen. At seventeen, he was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory, producing an important photographic document of the scene, and in 1971, at the age of twenty-four, he became the first living photographer since Alfred Stieglitz forty years earlier to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

Alex Webb A beloved member of Magum Photos and master of color photography, Alex Webb (born in San Francisco, 1952) has commented that “although my photographs are often described as complicated, my actual process as a street photographer is a pretty simple. I sense, almost “smell” the possibility of a photograph. I try to follow the rhythm of the streets, sometimes walking through situations, sometimes hanging out. It all depends on what the world gives me on a particular day. This way of working reminds me of what a teacher of mine, Charles Harbutt, once wrote: ‘I don’t take pictures, pictures take me … I can do nothing except have film in the camera and be alert.’”

Photography After Frank Essays by Philip Gefter
A year’s worth of opinionated essays from artists, educators, critics, art historians, and curators posted online, along with the responses, both invited and unsolicited, from students, bloggers, critics, historians, and artists.
Philip Gefter postulates that photography post– Robert Frank has created a paradoxical selfconsciousness. While the photographic image has brought us a heightened awareness of the world around us, the constant representation of who we are has conspired against our natural state of innocence.
Charlotte Cotton is an author and curator. Alex Klein is an artist and the Ralph M. Parsons Curatorial Fellow in the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department, LACMA.
