[ABOUT]

“[space] architektur stadtplannung design” was founded in 1998 as a studio of architecture, urban design and project management. It started initially in Stuttgart, Germany, with other branches emerging in sites where the studio develops its projects. Since 2006, the studio is located also in Tirana. The studio paused its activity in 2013 and reopened as “A.P.E” later.

“A.P.E. architecture planning engineering” was founded in 2016 in Tirana, Albania, as a follow up to studio [space], as a practice focused not only on architecture, but also offering consultancy services on urban design and engineering. In a short timeframe, the studio has added over 20 projects to its portfolio, some of which are now completed. A.P.E design projects follow contemporary architecture, using high quality construction materials and seeking to integrate sustainable design elements as much as possible while at the same time keeping costs under control.

Located in the very heart of the city center, this development offers the possibility of having nearby all the main and most important functions of everyday life. City Centre is perceived as a mixed-use development, including shopping areas, administration, hotel, housing etc. The proposed project is developed by dividing the main functions as follows: Four housing towers, an administration tower, a hotel Tower and four levels of shopping areas, including the 6 underground levels of parking.

The project consist of a multi-use complex that is composed by three main elements : housing, shopping mall and an office tower. Housing is foreseen to host new arrivals with low incomes as a form of social housing. To integrate this social class into society, housing is combinated with a shopping mall. The shopping mall will have three main atractors: electronic ,clothing and food sector. The office tower stands right at the center of the complex, providing ofiices not just for the shopping mall but for the neighborhood as well.

Studio [space]

The following projects are part of a total make-over, architectural intervention that the studio did for several villas in Farka area; Tirana’s periphery. The previous structures were not in harmony with the logic of the construction economy, nor the principles of architecture, therefore [SPACE] Architektur Stadtplanung Design was commissioned to re-design the villas towards a more contemporary and rational architecture. In the midsts of a metropolitan and suburban villa, our goal was to redesign the four abandoned structures, with an elegant touch and meet the market needs at the same time.

25

Studio [space]

These villas have been designed by considering the ecological aspect as well. The home energy report respects the European norm, with a thermal coefficient = 1.1 KW. Applied with the help of insulation, facade, and acoustic protection, this serves to reduce ongoing costs to residents for electricity, gas etc. The materials are of high quality, providing for the welfare of future residents.

27

Studio [space]

Interior concept: While redesigning the villas, we had in mind the intellectual middle class as the possible future buyers of the houses. Being more open minded in terms of privacy, the private areas are reduced in the minumum bedrooms-bathroom area, meanwhile the other spaces of the house are more exposed to the public.

29

Studio [space]

All the other activities inside the house are conceived to take place in more open spaces, as an expression of the habbits of this intellectual class. There is a maximum flexibility to accomodate a big number of people for parties in the weekends, at the same time, without violating the privacy of the other inhabitants of the house. Therefore, the two different areas (day & night) are separated from each other.

Located in the picturesque beach of ShĂŤngjini , the building is conceived as a light and flexible structure , which offers a much smaller enviromental impact with ecological materials ( eco - friendly ) such as wood. The structure , stripped of any excess decor , is easily transportable and assembled / disassembled depending on customer requirements . Because of the tides , the object is elevated from the ground and at the same time , the openings of the fasade change, modifying the transparency of the building .

The design concept for the camp ground has as main objective to create a fitting setting for the graves and will meet the primary task as a cemetery. Furthermore, this area must fulfill a didactic function. Based on the zoning of the former camp, the orientation is arranged in a way that the visitor can autonomously explore the camp grounds. The road is exempted as a forest of trees. It serves as an important reference axis for orientation on the camp grounds.

The project consist of a learning and Documentation Centre located in one of the previous concentration camps during 1943. Our conception of the design for the center goes parallel with the dynamic development of the area where it is located. Temporally changing elements give the to absence of the place a new presence. The project has been added with sensory dimensions: smells, tone and the interplay of light and shadow . It is composed by three main rooms: experience, thinking and treatment.

37

Studio [space]

Presented as a design-idea proposal, this mixed-use skyscrapper integrates residential, retail, office and a cultural feature together. The tallest tower reaches up to 912 ft. high and includes 71 levels of residential units, a public component on the street level, and an observation deck on the top level. The other tower includes offices, retail, restaurants and public gathering areas.

39

Studio [space]

Lifting - Masking - Building The intervention proposes that the existing fencing from the main road is being replaced by a more rational, metal structure (vertical trusses) which constitute the support of large poster for exposure and advertising of the University of New York Tirana. This disguise is necessary since a total new concept of facades of existing buildings is very expensive and exceeds the parameters of logic reconstruction.

Primo shops are internet data service chain stores, part of Slovenia telecom. The studio wanted to create a brand that represented their vision in being the first ones (Primo) in the market. This brought the idea of using the perfect forms, such as the cube or sphere, so the client would experience an ideal world inside of the shops. The main idea was to reflect into architecture their main service (internet), who serves as a portal that opens infinite doors. That way the store is simple, and every information is given by the main desk/portal.

Located at the center of Tirana, at Aba Bussines Center, the interior design intervention is an attempt to bring a feel of elegance, industrialisation and modernity. With this in mind, the project has a flexible approach, trying to adapt with the client’s needs and mindset. The minimalistic and modern design is brought by using clean lines, basic ma- terials as steel, glass, wood and also using basic colors. Every element puts in focus the company’s brand. Another approach is that of a space within the space, creating this way different levels of intimacy and subdividing the functions inside the offices area.

Traffic problems Traffic represents a key problem. Maximum priority should be given to opening and expansion of the road network. Currently transportation supplier and garbage collection of the city center is impossible. The plan outlines the successive improvement and expansion of the road network by 2020. For this reason it is necessary to redefine, integrate and formulate a precise hierarkije road network and roads in the corresponding parts of the city. 2005

Public buildings and urban ensemble inherited break from the streamlining of urban space and put in the role of soloist enabling integration and its harmonization. New buildings

65

Protection and professional renovation of buildings with cultural heritage, as well as roads, squares or areas of historical, cultural values should be considered in future urban projections, as well as implementing measures for further development. Documentation of the value of the hereditary structures should seen in the full context of urban development and further developed in an interdisciplinary form.

Zoom in different areas of the plan

The city plaza

A new element in the central area will be the main square of the city. The square is located in the space between the road December 13th and the road that connects the train station and the theater. It will be available in the future to all civic community. This plaza, with its central position and square elements 80 x 80 cm must represent the cultural image of the city as a central free space that provides opportunities for organizing events, celebrations and invites the whole community to recreation between citizen.

The theater plaza

Because of the history and the destination of this urban space, a special matter represents the reinforcement of the theater as a cultural institution. A reformulation of the introductory platform of the theater with a clear relation to the road space will redefine and emphasize the cultural character of the building. This urban project initially provides a definition of the road space with a building element in front of the building in question. This construction element should emphasize and evaluate entry into the RTV. building

The city park

This space with its natural spectacle of seasons will provide numerous opportunities for quality free time. The water level of the pool must be removable in order to open the possibility of creating a micro-concert amphitheater in case. Existing premises in Park City should be reformulated and positioned along the axis of the new pedestrian node Park and pedestrian routes. These units should provide a service not only for adults - the character “coffee”, but also for adults and children - the character “ice cream, cakes, soft drinks”.

The university plaza - green belt

“Green cord” along Kadia street does not fulfill its function like before . The restoration and revival of this cord becomes difficult because of ongoing construction in the area before university. His previous function as parks to university students lost. Prerequisite is the renewal of “green cord”, the return of his public function and especially prevention of further construction on it. Additionally it creates a binding element between the lateral sacral buildings.

Project Introduction

Studio [space]

This project is an urban infill development, with the focus on Urban Agriculture. It includes Woodward Avenue and it is located at the center of cluster four. The site is connected to the Central Business District in the south side, stopping at Fisher Freeway, and Highland Park in the North stopping at Webb Street. The site spreads one block on the west side and two blocks on the East, directly connected to Darouni’s project site. Woodward Corridor goes through two neighborhoods, (Lower Woodward and Middle Woodward), which consist of three distinctive and diverse centers; the Midtown, New Center and Boston-Edison / Arden Park.

Midtown - is facing problems such improper maintenance of buildings and the streetscape, poor sidewalk and asphalt conditions, underutilized commercial and retail buildings and although the Medical Center has a strong identity, the south side, where it connects with the Central Business District, needs to strengthen its identity and relation to the downtown. The area lacks recreational centers and green spaces. Unattractive overpasses between Woodward and highway intersections are noticed, including the vacant lots and buildings along the corridor. The New Center - has great potential to strengthen its image and form a gateway due to the existing railroad bridge and station. The industrial area is underutilized with many buildings and lots left vacant and the only identity is seen at Grand Boulevard. Boston-Edison / Arden Park - has a highly historic residential character, especially between Boston and Chicago Boulevard, including some historic institutional and commercial buildings.

73

Rebuild Neighborhood with an Urban Agriculture focus. - Focus on high traffic intersections and promote sustainable forms of movement. - Create necessary recreation centers and plazas for community gatherings. Promote the Social-Economic benefits of Urban Agriculture - Advertise and promote a healthy life style (LTU, 2006) through billboards and by placing gardens along major streets. Developing Ideas - The Urban Agriculture communities are located between these highly dense centers. Market and community center are typically located on Woodward Ave. with the Urban Gardens and farms located on the back, to respond to the density issue of transit oriented design. - Connect open parks, community gardens and recreation centers by footpaths and green corridor techniques along Woodward Avenue. - Develop a sustainable transit (light rail) system to limit the dependence on the automobile. Transit Oriented Development. D1-D4 – Primary Transit Stops where Woodward Avenue intersects with the main boulevards (connections at a regional level). Four main centers with different identities. T1-T4- Secondary Transit Stops (neighborhood and district connections) Urban Agriculture communities radiate from there.

Intervention in an existing building

Woodward Gardens Community Center Is located at the corner of Woodward Ave. and Temple Street. The main goal of this Community Center is to promote a healthy lifestyle for Midtown residents and at the same time offer them practical opportunities to do so.The Green House is located within the Community Center, projecting out at a 30* angle for maximum sun exposure. The market is located right next to the Green House, parallel to the indoor arcade. The lower level offers other public services, such as the indoor recreation center, restaurant and community kitchens. The Community Center building will serve as a environmental showcase, offering educative sessions to the community, housing urban agriculture inside the building as well as outside and focusing on renewable energy.

The area of the “terrapieno of the old harbor of Trieste is a very interesting one. Bathed by the adriatic sea and close to the carso mountains is a unique developing occasion. Due to its location is a potential monumental entry of the city. A urban park covers an underground parking lot, making the area nearly completely green and children friendly. Sport and strand facilities are included. 9 skyscrapers host residential areas, different layout of office’s, an auditorium, a spa, a gym, a dancing hall, shops and restaurants. A rational layout is given to the preexisting sea-sport associations on the nort side of the terrapieno.

Whether argued in a single building, or the urban fabric, the envelope is one of the most important elements. This is not just because of itsbasic function as a separator of spaces but because of the possibilitiesthat it has to offer. Indeed, it is the envelope together with the idea ofporosity that gives the possibility of building social relationships andallowing movement through the urban fabric.

Movement, togetherwith the envelope is the design’s main ingredient.

Client: Pogradec Municipality Location: Pogradec City, Albania Programme: Urban Planning Date: 2015-2016 Status: In progress Design team : Bolles+Wilson, A.P.E.

The Ohrid landscape is a complex palimpsest where different periods in time have left overlaid traces. Some are traces of unrealised futures or events that never took place (counter factual histories), making it a landscape of imagined architectures. We propose modest interventions that enhance natural and scenic qualities of the landscape, as well as other interventions that will trigger the interaction between visitors and locals. These different interventions are all linked by a cycling+walking track, which follows the trajrctory of the abandoned railway.
