VEGETATION HEALTH CLASSIFICATION OF STUDY AREA USING LANDSAT IMAGERY AND NORMALISED DIFFERENCE VEGETATION INDEX (NDVI)
Landsat 8 imagery taken on 2017-05-01 was used for this assessment. The imagery, taken at NADIR, is of the South Western coastline of Australia, with the Northern end of the Leschenault Estuary visible in the South West of the image. The imagery was corrected for atmospheric disturbances, and was also geometrically corrected.
Legend classification.shp 1 - Healthy 2 - Stressed 3 - Water 4 - Bare
The study area incorporated natural bushland, farmland and a few surface exploration / mining operations. The purpose of the assessment is to illustrate the usefulness, and capabilities, of satellite derived imagery in assessing vegetation health over a large area. Each pixel in this image represents 30m x 30m on the ground, however, some other satellites / instruments are capable of offering higher resiolution imagery for small scale (10 x 10 metre) assessment. For even higher resolution purposes, unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) imagery can be utilised, however, the costs & risks associated with such image acquisition may outweigh the benefits, and should be carefully considered.
