“Archer: Season 14” (FX/Hulu — Aug. 31, Season Premiere)

The 14th and final season of this animated, half-hour comedy catches back up with the adventures of Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world. This season, Archer and The Agency are finding their own way with Lana (Aisha Tyler) at the helm. Her goal is to make money while also making the world a better place, but she quickly finds out running a spy agency isn’t so cut and dry.

Powerful forces: ‘Ahsoka’ must save the universe in new Star Wars spinoff series

A fan-favorite former Jedi Knight finally gets her live-action, starring moment in the new Disney+ limited series, “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” debuting Wednesday, Aug. 23, on the streamer. Starring Rosario Dawson (“Dopesick”) in the title role, the eight-episode series follows Ahsoka Tano as she takes on the not-so-small task of protecting the galaxy from imminent threats.

Former Jedi Padawan-turned-Rebel Alliance member Ahsoka is one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe among fans of the franchise’s animated films and TV series. Before Dawson’s live-action portrayal of Ahsoka in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” the character first appeared in the 2008 animated feature and subsequent TV series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” as a teenage apprentice of Anakin Skywalker.

The new series is set just after the events of the animated series “Rebels” and in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian.” Hayden Christensen (“Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones,” 2002) reprises his role as Anakin yet again in

“Ahsoka,” after appearing in 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IXThe Rise of Skywalker,” and bringing the character back to life in the spinoff series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” — presumably as a Force ghost, as he is long dead in this timeline.

So, who will the baddies in “Ahsoka” be without Darth Vader to represent the dark side? Returning to portray Grand Admiral Thrawn is “The Witcher” star Lars Mikkelsen, who lent his voice to the chilling Imperial officer in “Rebels.”

Icy in demeanor and appearance — Thrawn is Chiss and his skin glows blue — he is only the tip of the villain iceberg in “Ahsoka.” Portraying even more adversaries challenging the Jedi and the universe at large are Ivanna Sakhno (“High Fidelity”) as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto (“The Last Tour,” 2016) as Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth and the late Ray Stevenson (“Das Boot”) as Baylan Skoll.

“Ahsoka” also stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo (“Day Shift,” 2022) as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“Kate,” 2021) as Hera Syndulla, Eman Esfandi (“The Inspection,” 2022) as Ezra Bridger and David Tennant (“Doctor Who”) as the voice of droid Huyang, reprising his role from the Clone Wars series.

Portraying a character that is as cherished as Ahsoka, and held in such high regard by one of film and TV’s most active and vocal fan bases, is a daunting task. Dawson was up for the challenge, however, crediting stunt co-ordinator Ming Qiu (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) with getting her into shape when it came to wielding a lightsaber like a Jedi, as she shared on the Dagobah Dispatch podcast in May: “When [Qiu] said, ‘This one did not make my eyes hurt,’ that was the first compliment that I got, and I think I cried.”

Stunts are one thing, but harnessing the Force is another. Luckily for Dawson, that became second nature. “I feel like I have it more than someone who just wants to move an object,” explained Dawson. “I feel that there is an energy that we have, and a power that we have, that if we do concentrate it and focus it in the right ways, we can move mountains.”

“Movie: Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s favourite space family, the Guardians of the Galaxy, return for their final adventure together as they fight to stop the ruthless ambitions of The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). After a surprise attack at Knowhere, the team’s headquarters, Rocket (Bradley Cooper) is gravely injured, forcing the remaining Guardians — Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Groot (Vin Diesel) — to race against time to save their friend. Complicating matters even further, the Guardians are being pursued by “perfect” warrior Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), who is intent on revenge.

“Movie: Rio 2”

Blue macaws Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and their three children are comfortably settled in the city, but perhaps too comfortably — Jewel fears that the children are becoming more like humans than birds. After learning that she and Blu may not be the last blue macaws after all, Jewel decides that their little family should visit the Amazon jungle. It’s there that Blu meets his formidable father-inlaw (Andy Garcia) and goes beak-to-beak with archnemesis Nigel (Jemaine Clement).

“Movie: Cinderella” (4K Remaster)

Disney’s classic animated film makes its grand re-entrance with its brand-new, 4K remastered version. Releasing as part of World Princess Week and as part of Disney’s centennial celebration, the remastered 1950 film follows the story of Cinderella (Ilene Woods), a young woman living with her cruel stepmother (Eleanor Audley) and two stepsisters (Rhoda Williams, Lucille Bliss), who treat her live a servant. When every young woman in the kingdom is invited to a ball at the royal palace, Cinderella sets out to find her happily ever after.

BEST LEONARD BERNSTEIN SCREEN PROJECTS

“On the Town” (1949): For this iconic musical, legendary composer Bernstein –whose “Kaddish Symphony” will be showcased by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on PBS’ “Great Performances” Monday, Aug. 21 (check local listings) – worked with the team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green on the songs for its original stage incarnation. Some were dropped from the movie (to Bernstein’s great displeasure), but still, the tunes help Gene Kelly (also the film’s co-director), Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin have a blast as sailors in a 24hour leave in “New York, New York.”

“On the Waterfront” (1954): Bernstein’s driving, Oscar-nominated score does much to help intensify director Elia Kazan and writer Budd Schulberg’s drama of dock worker Terry Malloy’s (Marlon Brando) fight against union corruption,

sparked by his role in unwittingly setting up a colleague to be killed … and also by the anger and outrage of the slain man’s sister (Eva Marie Saint) over his death.

“Omnibus” (1954-58): Though they technically were called “lectures,” Bernstein’s telecasts about various elements of music for this arts series were much more exciting than that word might suggest. With help from other musicians, he brought works by Beethoven and Bach (among others) to life, delving into what he believed their mindsets to be when they created some of their most famous compositions.

“New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concerts” (1958-72): An offshoot of Bernstein’s “Omnibus” involvement was this much-acclaimed series that posed such titular questions as “What Does Music Mean?” and “Who Is Gustav

Mahler?” ... and then proceeded to answer them through carefully chosen selections that represented the best of whatever the given episode’s subject was. The program proved internationally popular, with more than 40 countries running it.

“West Side Story” (1961): Arguably the most celebrated example of Bernstein’s music on film (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), the “Romeo and Juliet”-like story of young lovers on opposite sides of a turf war between two New York gangs – the Sharks and the Jets — includes some of the most famous songs ever devised for the musical theater, including “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “America” and “I Feel Pretty.” The movie won 10 of the 11 Oscars it was nominated for, including best picture; the story and tunes also fueled the Steven Spielberg-directed 2021 version.
