“Star Trek: Lower Decks”

In Season 4 of this animated series set in the Star Trek universe, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells) and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple caves – all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way.

Puttin’ on the mitz’: The Sandlers take Netflix in new comedy

Life is a tapestry of tiny moments, but some moments are more significant and formative than others. Whether you looked forward to a quinceañera, a sweet 16, your senior prom or another teenage milestone event, it seems more than likely that the day came and went with a certain level of anticipation and expectation. Unfortunately, those two feelings often team up to create unattainable standards, as is the case in Netflix’s newest family comedy.

In “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” premiering Friday, Aug. 25, on Netflix, Stacey Friedman (Sunny Sandler, “Grown Ups,” 2010) is dead set on having the perfect bat mitzvah party. The film is based on the young adult (YA) novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, in which Stacey’s desires are made very clear: all she wants is “the perfect BCBG dress to wear, her friends by her side, and her biggest crush ever, Andy Goldfarb [Dylan Hoffman, “Next” ], to dance with her (and maybe even make out with her on the dance floor).” So naturally, when the day doesn’t

exactly go off without a hitch, Stacey is massively disappointed.

Adding insult to injury, Stacey always seems to be in competition with her so-called best friend, Lydia (Samantha Lorraine, “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”), who is also hosting her bat mitzvah around the same time. When popularity, romantic crushes and other middle school dramas creep into the picture for Stacey, her flubbed ceremonial rite of passage threatens to ruin her reputation.

While the last name Sandler is most closely associated with “Billy Madison” (1995) and “Happy Gilmore” (1996) comedian Adam Sandler, the entire Sandler family is on board for this new production. The plot may revolve around the character played by his youngest daughter, Sunny, but Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler (“The Wrong Missy,” 2020), stars as a member of the Rodriguez-Katz family, while their eldest daughter, Sadie Sandler (“Pixels,” 2015), plays Stacey’s sister, Ronnie.

Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” is just one of a series of recent films and television shows to highlight various moments in Jewish life around the world. Following the streamer’s expansion into Israel in early 2016, audiences everywhere were introduced to a plethora of content they may have been otherwise unfamiliar with.

As was the case with Netflix’s expansion into other countries, the streamer quickly began to offer Hebrew subtitles and dubbing for English and other language titles within Israel. Even more notably, Netflix also became a bridge between the Israeli entertainment industry and the West, encouraging onscreen representation and inclusivity for the Jewish diaspora.

Series like “Unorthodox,” “The Club” and “Fauda” quickly gained popularity alongside films such as “Maktub” (2018), “Shiva Baby” (2021) and “Tick, Tick ... BOOM!” (2021), about late Jewish Broadway legend Jonathan Larson (Broadway’s “Rent,” 1994), and Netflix began promoting more widespread Jewish content in the United States as well. In this regard, the Sandler family seems the perfect choice to front an American bat mitzvah comedy.

“Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life” - Season 2, Part 2 (Aug. 30)

This children’s computer-animated series — presented in a classic, non-verbal cartoon comedy style — follows the lovably mischievous chipmunks Chip (Matthew Géczy) and Dale (Kaycie Chase) as they live the luxurious park life and go on sky-high adventures. As the duo take on bigger and wilder adventures than ever and face down larger-than-life bullies, they continue on their quest to increase their acorn stash to gargantuan proportions. All the while, Chip and Dale are joined in their mayhem by Disney favorite characters including Pluto (Bill Farmer), Donald Duck (Sylvain Caruso) and more.

“Pretty Freekin Scary” - Season 1, New Episodes (Aug. 30)

Revived from the popular kids’ book series by author Chris P. Flesh, the series follows the adventures of 14-year-old Frankie Ripp (Eliana Su’a), who once had a seemingly perfect life. When an unexpected accident upends her life, sending her straight to the Underworld and face-to-face with The Grim Reaper (Siobhan Murphy), Frankie begs to go back to “living” life. Grim agrees on one condition: Frankie must return alongside her new Underworld guardians, Pretty (Kyan Samuels) and Scary (Leah Mei Gold), who will keep an eye on her as she adjusts to her new life as a “once-dead” teenager.

“Miracle on 34th Street”

(1947): A very young Wood is part of this holiday staple as a Macy’s executive’s (Maureen O’Hara) skeptical daughter, who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus ... until she meets the real deal (played by Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn).

“Marjorie Morningstar” (1958): One of Wood’s more underrated movies foreshadowed the premises of some of her later ones, adapting Herman Wouk’s novel about a would-be actress whose love for an aspiring writer (Gene Kelly) is opposed by her parents.

“Splendor in the Grass” (1961): Speaking to a generation, which it still does today, Wood’s performance for director Elia Kazan as a 1920s Kansas teen facing social

pressures — and not doing particularly well in handling that — remains a major entry on the resumes of both Wood and her leading man, Warren Beatty. Turner Classic Movies presents the film as part of a night of movies about young people that extends from Friday, Sept. 1, into early the morning of Saturday, Sept. 2.

“Gypsy” (1962): Wood does dynamic work as a burlesque performer striving to live out the dreams of her pushy mom (Rosalind Russell), the ultimate “stage mother.”

“Love With the Proper Stranger” (1963): Forming a dynamic duo with Steve McQueen, Wood is affecting as a saleswoman dealing with an expected pregnancy and the musician who’s the father.

“Inside Daisy Clover” (1965): In her first teaming with Robert Redford — who credits her with having been a major proponent of his screen career — Wood plays an unlikely movie star who has a hard time dealing with the trappings of the Hollywood of the 1930s.

“Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice’ (1969): Nodding to social developments of the time, Wood rolled the dice with her image by playing part of a two-couple foursome experimenting with freedom in commitment and sexuality.

“Brainstorm” (1983): Completed after her death, Wood’s final film is an intriguing science-fiction tale casting her as one of several researchers involved in developing a device that can read people’s minds.
