Hidden talent: ‘I Can See Your Voice’ reveals more secret voices

They say you can fake it ‘til you make it, and there is nowhere that idiom is more true than on “I Can See Your Voice.” The musical mystery game show returns for its third season Tuesday, Sept. 19, on Fox, as host — and series creator — Ken Jeong (“The Afterparty”) leads contestants through a series of guessing rounds centered around six talented lip-synchers.

Among the “secret voices” are true vocalists and imposter songbirds who all perform on stage to stellar pre-recorded vocals, but only the real singers perform to their own backup track. If the contestant correctly identifies a genuine performer in the final round without hearing a single note, they’re singing all the way home with the $100,000 grand prize. Whether the secret voices are retired vocalists, up-and-coming artists, hobbyist singers or just convincing fakes is only revealed once the contestant locks them in for elimination or their final selection.

This season, Fox promises “all-new theme nights,” featuring duets between celebrity musicians and contestants’ “secret voices” picks — for better or worse. The contestants don’t know just how many of the six secret voices are good or bad singers, meaning that while each elimination round reveals the true voice of one of the lip-synchers, the contestants have no clue whether they’re producing sweet music or a train wreck in the final duet performance.

“Krapopolis” - Season 1 (Fox/Hulu — Sept. 24/25, Series Premiere)

Set in mythical ancient Greece, this new animated comedy for adults tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities, while also trying their best to not kill each other in the process. The series features the voices of Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy and Duncan Trussell.

The duets ratchet up the nail-biting tension for the contestants, panelists, studio audience and musicians alike. Singer-songwriter and “The Masked Singer” winner, Jewel (You Were Meant For Me,” 1995), made an appearance in the second season of “I Can Hear Your Voice,” and after having aided the night’s contestant from the panel, she herself was nervous to hear if the secret voice really had pipes when they took the stage together. Luckily the secret voice was hiding a true talent for crooning.

Contestants on “I Can See Your Voice” have limited information on the secret voices — they are defined solely by their occupation — leaving the lip-synchs as the most credible evidence of performance prowess. Throughout the elimination rounds, contestants get help from a panel of celebs anchored by Adrienne Bailon-Houghton (“The Real”) and Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) with a rotating chair of guest judges and featured musical artists.

In addition to the panel, contestants have the opportunity to use the “golden mic” (an impression from a celebrity offscreen about the lip-synch performances), a look into a day in the life of one of the secret voices, a testimonial from a secret voice’s biggest fan and a peek into the secret voice’s home. Not every clue is a helping hand, however, as the tools at the contestants’ disposal are filled with both genuine hints as well as red herrings.

A final interrogation round before the contestant locks in their ultimate selection allows them to ask one of the remaining two secret voices as many questions as they can in 30 seconds. They can ask anything they want, except for the secret voice to belt out a quick tune. Whether seeing a secret voice waffle over their answers or come prepared sets off alarm bells is up to the contestant to decide.

The season premiere of “I Can See Your Voice” follows another mystery voice competition series making its second season premiere the same night. “Name That Tune” returns with more of its celebrity edition. Celebrity contestants including athletes, TV personalities, actors and musicians compete to identify songs in a series of challenging games, affording the celebs the chance to win over $150,000 for their charity of choice if they really know their tunes.

“Raven’s Home” - Season 6, New Episodes (Sept. 20)

A spinoff of the Disney Channel series “That’s So Raven” (2003-2007), new episodes from Season 6 of this sitcom follow the adventures of somewhat-psychic Raven Baxter (Raven-Symoné) and her son Booker (Issac Ryan Brown), who has inherited his mom’s gift to catch glimpses of the future. Season 6 includes a European vacation, a reality show debut, a dip into volunteer work, and more. Rondell Sheridan and Mykal-Michelle Harris also star.

“Spidey and his Amazing Friends”Season 2, New Episodes

The Spidey crew is back in business in new episodes of this Disney Junior computer-animated series. Peter Parker, aka Spidey (voiced by Benjamin Valic) is used to fighting crime solo, but now he must learn what it takes to be the best thing he can be: a good friend who works well with others. Together with his friends Miles Morales, aka Spin (Jakari Fraser) and Gwen Stacy, aka Ghost-Spider (Lily Sanfelippo), Spidey teams up with other Marvel heroes to take down evil villains and save the day.

BEST KEVIN COSTNER MOVIES

“Silverado” (1985): Kasdan made up for the “Big Chill” excising by giving Costner one of the principal parts in this traditional Western, with Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn and Danny Glover among the other main stars.

“No Way Out” (1987): Costner is terrific as a Navy man caught in intrigue after his secret lover (Sean Young), the mistress of a government bigwig (Gene Hackman), is accidentally killed.

“The Untouchables” (1987): Costner successfully reinvents Treasury man Eliot Ness, who pursues mobster Al Capone (Robert De Niro) and partners with a veteran Chicago cop (Oscar winner Sean Connery) in director Brian De Palma’s film.

“Bull Durham” (1988): Costner cements his amiable-athlete image in this

baseball comedy, teaming him romantically and memorably with Susan Sarandon (though co-star Tim Robbins was her real-life partner for many years).

“Field of Dreams” (1989): Ask any man what his favorite Costner movie is, and chances are good that this baseball-diamond-building drama is the one. The picture encompasses many great performances, also including those of Ray Liotta and (in his last movie appearance) Burt Lancaster.

“Dances With Wolves” (1990): Costner became a film auteur relatively early on, directing and starring in this Oscar winner about a Civil War lieutenant who truly goes his own way. With his multiple accolades here, Costner shot to the top of virtually every producer and casting director’s “want” list.

“JFK” (1991): This really is director Oliver Stone’s film, but Costner is fine as District Attorney Jim Garrison, leading a massive cast packed with stars from Kevin Bacon and Tommy Lee Jones to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

“The Bodyguard” (1992): It certainly isn’t the most profound movie ever made, but it sure is entertaining. Costner plays a former Secret Service man hired to protect a threatened superstar (Whitney Houston), and sparks fly between them; the film also yielded a top-selling soundtrack led by Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.”

“A Perfect World” (1993): Costner challenges his screen image he had up to that time as an escaped, hostage-holding convict on the run from a Texas Ranger (Clint Eastwood, also the director here).
