A justifiable follow-up

Barbie is taking over the big screen – and the world at large – as Greta Gerwig’s star-studded film “Barbie” hits theaters Friday, July 21. To celebrate her live-action debut, the best of design are bringing Barbie’s iconic Dreamhouse to life in the “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge,” premiering Sunday, July 16, on HGTV.

According to a news release from HGTV: “Each episode will feature captivating and nostalgic Barbie content as each team implements daring designs synonymous with the iconic Dreamhouse throughout the home.” Once completed, the rooms will be judged by designer (and Barbie collaborator) Jonathan Adler and Barbie Dreamhouse expert Tiffany Brooks (“HGTV Design Star”), who will be joined each week by a different celebrity guest … some of whom may even star in the “Barbie” movie.

During the “larger-thanlife,” 90-minute premiere, supermodel and entrepreneur Ashley Graham, who hosts the series, takes the competitors on a trip to the Mattel headquarters for some design inspiration, receiving a gasp-worthy Barbie surprise along the way.

Once the teams are buzzing with ideas, the challenge begins, starting off on the first floor with a showdown between partners Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson (“Married to Real Estate”) and builder Jasmine Roth (“Help! I Wrecked My House”), working alongside Food Network’s Antonia Lofaso (“Beachside Brawl”).

From light-up dance floors to hat carousels to aquariums, the “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge” brings “Barbie World” to life when it premieres, Sunday, July 16, on HGTV.

A familiar path: ‘Justified’ returns to FX with ‘City Primeval’ sequel

To those who enjoyed the initial drama, a sequel to it is likely to seem quite “Justified.”

Timothy Olyphant returns in the further adventures of lawman Raylan Givens as the FX series “Justified: City Primeval” debuts with the first two of its eight episodes Tuesday, July 18. Set 15 years after “Justified” ended, the saga adapts another story by Elmore Leonard (“City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit”) and newly factors Givens into it, with the U.S. marshal living in Miami after his time in Kentucky.

A situation that develops in Florida leads him to Detroit and a vicious felon known as the Oklahoma Wildman (played by Boyd Holbrook, previously of “Narcos”), whose lawyer (“King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis) has her own reasons for wanting to help her client elude the scales of justice.

With Olyphant also an executive producer of the show along with author Leonard’s estate, “Justified: City Primeval” includes Adelaide Clemens (“Rectify”), Vondie Curtis-Hall (“The Recruit”), Marin Ireland (“Hell or High Water,” 2016), double Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (“The Girl From Plainville”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control) and Vivian Olyphant – the star’s daughter, who plays Givens’ offspring – among additional cast members. They’re new to the “Justified” world, as is actress Ellis, who felt she couldn’t go wrong with material that originally came from the mind of Leonard.

“I just had a general familiarity with ‘Justified,’” she says. “I knew it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation, and I was interested in that because I’m a big reader. Then, when I started working on this, I watched (the original show) and got to see Tim being ‘that guy.’ It was one of those things where you feel a character was written for somebody, even if the author did not have that person in mind.

“There was a great singer named Phyllis Hyman, and Duke Ellington’s granddaughter says that she believes he wrote his songs for Phyllis Hyman even before she was born,” Ellis explains. “There also are acting roles like that, and I just feel that Tim is the person who was meant to walk in these boots.”

Much of the appeal for Ellis in playing attorney Carolyn Wilder in “Justified: City Primeval” came from what she defines as “taking that ‘Justified’ world and putting it inside Detroit, and seeing those worlds collide. (Givens) certainly is a fish out of water there, and I love how Carolyn is very confrontational with him. She says, ‘I know how you’ve been doing things, but you can’t do them here … not in my town, and not with me.’”

Still, there’s room for Carolyn to have her own development arc. “There’s the world of justice and the world of law, and sometimes, those don’t meet,” Ellis reasons. “I think Carolyn is one of those people who feel that justice isn’t necessarily found in a courthouse or a legislative building. You have to find it where you can find it, and I think that’s what makes her and Raylan kindred spirits. She does things that are necessary, but she still has to find her footing and be true to herself.”

Most of Ellis’s scenes in “Justified: City Primeval” are with Olyphant, but she also enjoyed sharing on-camera moments with co-star Curtis-Hall (“I just think he’s one of the best actors who has ever acted”). For as many strong women as she has portrayed, she found Carolyn a unique role, maintaining that she has little desire “to pull from other parts. Particularly for a woman on television, there’s an expectation that you fall in line within particular roles, but I wanted something new and something I had to grasp as I went along.”

This pulpy new sci-fi mystery caper premieres after being delayed from December. When neighborhood drug dealer Fontaine (John Boyega) is shot dead by a rival (J. Alphonse Nicholson), he is understandably shocked when he wakes up in his bed the next morning, completely unharmed. This biographical drama film tells the very real story of Mamie Till-Mobley, following her relentless pursuit of justice in honor of her late son, Emmett Till. In this retelling of her “poignant journey of grief turned to action” (per MGM Studios), Danielle Deadwyler portrays Mamie Till-Mobley as she works to expose the racism that prompted her son’s murder, fighting to bring all those involved to justice. The film also focuses on her son, Emmett (portrayed by Jalyn Hall), taking the time to show what he was like as a youth and allowing viewers a glimpse into the boy’s all-too-short life.

“Somebody Up There Likes Me”

(1956): Newman made a big leap into stardom in the story of boxer Rocky Graziano

“The Long, Hot Summer” (1958): An ideally cast Newman plays Ben Quick, a reputed troublemaker who gets a mixed reception in his new locale, in this William Faulkner tale.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958): Newman makes a first-rate Brick to Elizabeth Taylor’s Maggie in the Tennessee Williams play.

“Exodus” (1960): Newman impresses as a freedom fighter helping to establish the State of Israel in director Otto Preminger’s drama.

“The Hustler” (1961): One of Newman’s most memorable roles is “Fast” Eddie Felson, a pool-playing upstart who wants to take on the legendary Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). The film will be presented Tuesday, July 18, on Turner Classic Movies.

“Hud” (1963): Called “the man with the barbed-wire soul” in ads, Newman’s character in this excellent drama is a rancher’s (Melvyn Douglas) rebellious, amoral son.

“Cool Hand Luke” (1967): An outstanding Newman plays an independent-minded convict who shows “a failure to communicate.”

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969): Newman and Robert Redford had their first teaming as the title outlaws who, at least here, stage robberies with a humorous spirit.

“The Sting” (1973): The reunited Newman and Robert Redford are great in this best picture Oscar winner as Depression-era con men out to even a score with a tough gangster (Robert Shaw).

“Absence of Malice” (1981): Newman is in top form as a mobster’s grandson seeking justice after a newspaper article wrongly suggests he’s involved in illegal dealings.

“Special Ops: Lioness: Season 1” (Paramount+ — Series Premiere, July 23)

Inspired by an actual US Military program, this original espionage thriller follows the life of Joe (Zoe Saldana) while she attempts to balance her personal and professional life as the tip of the CIA’s spear in the war on terror. The Lioness Program, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) and Donald Westfield (Michael Kelly), enlists an aggressive Marine Raider named Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) to operate undercover alongside Joe among the power brokers of State terrorism in the CIA’s efforts to thwart the next 9/11.

Crew group and now the co-founder and CEO of her own direct-to-customer beauty brand, LoveSeen, and Jessel Taank, 43, who works as a fashion publicist and brand consultant, all while caring for her twin sons.
