In “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” premiering Friday, Aug. 25, on Netflix, Stacey Friedman (Sunny Sandler, “Grown Ups,” 2010) is dead set on having the perfect bat mitzvah party. Based on the YA novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, the film also stars Adam Sandler (“Happy Gilmore,” 1996); Jackie Sandler (“The Wrong Missy,” 2020); their daughter, Sadie (“Pixels,” 2015); and Samantha Lorraine (“The Walking Dead: World Beyond”).

It’s time to hang up the phone and spill the gossip: the third and final episode of “Telemarketers” airs Sunday, Aug. 27, on HBO, with episodes streaming on Max.

Directed by Adam Bhala Lough (“Alt-Right: Age of Rage,” 2018) and Sam Lipman-Stern (“Live from the Streets”) – the latter of whom uncovered the scandal in question – this eye-opening docuseries dives into the twisted world of telemarketing, exposing a billion-dollar scam that rippled through the industry at large.

This limited series, according to HBO, “chronicles the 20-year journey of two unlikely employees who stumble upon the murky truth behind a seedy New Jersey call center,” introducing viewers to two former telemarketing employees – Pat Pespas and Sam Lipman-Stern himself – who met while working in the telemarketing industry during the early 2000s. At the time, Lipman-Stern was a 14-year-old high school dropout and Pespas a top salesman dealing with addiction issues. But eventually, their unlikely partnership led to the discovery of mass corruption and fraud throughout the industry: some taking place in their

own backyard, as their own company advertised itself as raising money for charitable causes while in reality pocketing most of the money.

After their workplace was shut down by an FBI investigation, the pair became whistleblowers and continued their work bringing attention to the exploitative (and more often than not) illegal practices used fervently across the telemarketing industry, leading to (what HBO calls) “a madcap story of an unruly, low-wage environment and two longtime office buddies who find themselves hot on the trail of a sobering look at the dark side of American capitalism and the misuse of consumer trust.”

“With raw eyewitness footage and a comedic cast of characters,” says HBO, “this three-part documentary takes you from an anarchic boiler room filled with booze, drugs and debauchery to the halls of the United States Senate as a billion-dollar telemarketing scam unravels.”

Puttin’ on the mitz’: The Sandlers take Netflix in new comedy

Life is a tapestry of tiny moments, but some moments are more significant and formative than others. Whether you looked forward to a quinceañera, a sweet 16, your senior prom or another teenage milestone event, it seems more than likely that the day came and went with a certain level of anticipation and expectation. Unfortunately, those two feelings often team up to create unattainable standards, as is the case in Netflix’s newest family comedy.

In “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” premiering Friday, Aug. 25, on Netflix, Stacey Friedman (Sunny Sandler, “Grown Ups,” 2010) is dead set on having the perfect bat mitzvah party. The film is based on the young adult (YA) novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, in which Stacey’s desires are made very clear: all she wants is “the perfect BCBG dress to wear, her friends by her side, and her biggest crush ever, Andy Goldfarb [Dylan Hoffman, “Next”], to dance with her (and maybe even make out with her on the dance floor).” So naturally, when the day doesn’t exactly go off without a hitch, Stacey is massively disappointed.

Adding insult to injury, Stacey always seems to be in competition with her so-called best friend, Lydia (Samantha Lorraine, “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”), who is also hosting her bat mitzvah around the same time. When popularity, romantic crushes and other middle school dramas creep into the picture for Stacey, her flubbed ceremonial rite of passage threatens to ruin her reputation.

While the last name Sandler is most closely associated with “Billy Madison” (1995) and “Happy Gilmore” (1996) comedian Adam Sandler, the entire Sandler family is on board for this new production. The plot may revolve around the

character played by his youngest daughter, Sunny, but Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler (“The Wrong Missy,” 2020), stars as a member of the Rodriguez-Katz family, while their eldest daughter, Sadie Sandler (“Pixels,” 2015), plays Stacey’s sister, Ronnie.

Directed by Sammi Cohen, the creative mind behind Hulu’s coming-of-age romcom “Crush” (2022), “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” is just one of a series of recent films and television shows to highlight various moments in Jewish life around the world. Following the streamer’s expansion into Israel in early 2016, audiences everywhere were introduced to a plethora of content they may have been otherwise unfamiliar with.

As was the case with Netflix’s expansion into other countries, the streamer quickly began to offer Hebrew subtitles and dubbing for English and other language titles within Israel. Even more notably, Netflix also became a bridge between the Israeli entertainment industry and the West, encouraging onscreen representation and inclusivity for the Jewish diaspora.

Series like “Unorthodox,” “The Club” and “Fauda” quickly gained popularity alongside films such as “Maktub” (2018), “Shiva Baby” (2021) and “Tick, Tick ... BOOM!” (2021), about late Jewish Broadway legend Jonathan Larson (Broadway’s “Rent,” 1994), and Netflix began promoting more widespread Jewish content in the United States as well. In this regard, the Sandler family seems the perfect choice to front an American bat mitzvah comedy.

Despite the fact that the Sandlers tend to stay out of the limelight in the media, the well-known patriarch has shared his delight about his daughters following in his comedic footsteps. And if the Sandler girls’ real-life bat mitzvahs are anything to base Netflix’s new movie on, this is not one to miss.

Sunny, now 14, had her own bat mitzvah in May of last year. The festivities invitees included, among Sunny’s friends and family, Sandler’s “Murder Mystery” (2019) co-star and friend Jennifer Aniston, Twilight franchise star Taylor Lautner and performances by pop sensations Halsey (“Colors,” 2015) and Charlie Puth (“We Don’t Talk Anymore,” 2016).

“It was the craziest bat mitzvah I’ve ever seen in my life,” honoured guest and musician Halsey told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” shortly thereafter. “I mean, it was like Coachella.”

Setting sale from his small village, Luffy embarks on a perilous journey to find One Piece, a legendary, fabled treasure that will help him to become the king of pirates, with the help of his intrepid crew — Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero), and Sanji (Taz Skylar).

“Disenchantment” - Season 5 (Sept.

Hear ye, hear ye! The end is near for “Disenchantment,” as this hit animated series premieres its fifth and final season. Back for one last grand misadventure, heavy-drinking Queen Bean (Abbi Jacobson), her feisty elf companion, Elfo (Nat Faxon), and her personal demon, Luci (Eric André), are out to save Dreamland from Queen Dagmar’s (Sharon Horgan) wicked rule. After an incident that leads to him losing his job, an assistant basketball coach, Marcus Marakovich (Woody Harrelson), is given a choice by a judge between serving time in prison or doing community service coaching a team of players with learning disabilities. Marcus initially struggles with coaching this new team, but as he gets to know the players personally, he comes to realize that they are more than just their skills on the court. It’s also the part-time home of beloved wildlife guru Jack Hanna, the zoo’s director emeritus. Viewers get an exclusive look inside the grounds, allowing them to experience what visitors can’t: compelling, heartwarming stories, and behind-the-scenes moments and adventures.

“Movie: Belle” (Aug. 31)

Based on an inspiring true story, this 2014 biographical drama film follows the life of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the biracial daughter of Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode), as she is raised by her aristocratic Great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) in 18th century England.

“Movie: Finnick” (Aug. 31)

Not many people know that every house is inhabited by finns. They are furry creatures that appear in human world to take care of a house and keep the hearth. Finnick is a young Finn, who cares more about pranks than his responsibility to the house. But, everything changes when a new family moves into his house and inexplicable events begin to happen in the city. Finnick must team up with his new house-mate, Christine, to solve the mystery and save the city.

“Miracle on 34th Street” (1947): A very young Wood is part of this holiday staple as a Macy’s executive’s (Maureen O’Hara) skeptical daughter, who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus ... until she meets the real deal (played by Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn).

“Rebel Without a Cause” (1955): Wood started to come of age as a friend of a deeply troubled town newcomer (James Dean) in this Nicholas Ray-directed drama classic.

“The Searchers” (1956): Regarded by many as the greatest Western ever made, John Ford’s saga features Wood as the Comanche-abducted niece of the Civil War veteran (John Wayne) who pursues her.

“Marjorie Morningstar” (1958): One of Wood’s more underrated movies foreshadowed the premises of some of her later ones, adapting Herman Wouk’s novel about a would-be actress whose love for an aspiring writer (Gene Kelly) is opposed by her parents.

“Splendor in the Grass” (1961): Speaking to a generation, which it still does today, Wood’s performance for director Elia Kazan as a 1920s Kansas teen facing social pressures — and not doing particularly well in handling that — remains a major entry on the resumes of both Wood and her leading man, Warren Beatty. Turner Classic Movies presents the film as part of a night of movies about young people that extends from Friday, Sept. 1, into early the morning of Saturday, Sept. 2.

“West Side Story” (1961): Director Robert Wise’s original, Oscar-winning screen version of the musical is destined to remain forever beloved for elements including Wood’s portrayal of lovestruck heroine Maria.

“Gypsy” (1962): Wood does dynamic work as a burlesque performer striving to live out the dreams of her pushy mom (Rosalind Russell), the ultimate “stage mother.”

“Love With the Proper Stranger” (1963): Forming a dynamic duo with Steve McQueen, Wood is affecting as a saleswoman dealing with an expected pregnancy and the musician who’s the father.

“Inside Daisy Clover” (1965): In her first teaming with Robert Redford — who credits her with having been a major proponent of his screen career — Wood plays an unlikely movie star who has a hard time dealing with the trappings of the Hollywood of the 1930s.

“Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice’ (1969): Nodding to social developments of the time, Wood rolled the dice with her image by playing part of a two-couple foursome experimenting with freedom in commitment and sexuality.

“Brainstorm” (1983): Completed after her death, Wood’s final film is an intriguing science-fiction tale casting her as one of several researchers involved in developing a device that can read people’s minds.

Viewer’s choice: Lead your own romantic adventure with ‘Choose Love’

Netflix is putting the power back in the viewer’s hands, as the streaming platform is releasing its latest endeavor into the interactive format with “Choose Love,” premiering Thursday, Aug. 31.

Joining the likes of Netflix’s other interactive programming, such as “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” (2018), “Cat Burglar” (2022), “Headspace: Unwind Your Mind” (2021) and “Trivia Quest” (2022), “Choose Love” comes from director Stuart McDonald (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and writer Josann McGibbon (“Runaway Bride,” 1999), who both have ample experience in the world of romantic comedies – but never before like this.

A “choose your own romantic adventure,” so to speak, this film welcomes viewers into the seemingly perfect life of Cami Conway (Laura Marano, “The Royal Treatment,” 2022). She’s working her dream job as a recording engineer, has a steady, long-term boyfriend she loves, and the future looks bright. That is … for now. What happens next is entirely up to you! As Cami’s story continues, the film will intermittently prompt the viewer (you) with questions asking which direction Cami should go next. Should she choose a new career path? Rethink her relationship? The future is totally in your hands.
