Q: Had Chuck Todd’s upcoming exit from “Meet the Press” been planned, or was it a sudden decision? – Marc Swan, via e-mail

A: It reportedly had been discussed upon the legendary NBC News program’s latest change of executive producers, but nothing was definite until Todd announced the forthcoming switch on the show in early June. The timing of the move came as a surprise to many, since such a series usually doesn’t switch its moderator on the cusp of a presidential election season. However, Kristen Welker – who will be Todd’s successor — has proven her chops on the political beat, and viewers being familiar with her in that capacity (and as a Sunday-morning fill-in anchor for Todd on a number of occasions) probably was a giant factor in her inheriting the “Press” role, which she’s expected to begin in September. Though Todd has had his share of controversy during his nine years in the job, there will be sufficient time to salute his tenure there before he leaves and begins serving as chief political analyst across all NBC News platforms.

Play on: Game time continues on ABC as two favorites return

Let the games begin … again.

ABC has gone very heavy on primetime contests in recent summers, many of them updates of shows that were popular in earlier incarnations. Already, such series as “Press Your Luck,” “The Chase,” “Generation Gap” and “Claim to Fame” have made their returns for these warm-weather months.

That parade of participants and prizes continues as “Celebrity Family Feud” and “The $100,000 Pyramid” begin new rounds on ABC Sunday, July 9. Host Steve Harvey starts his tenth season of pitting teams of stars and their relatives or work colleagues against each other on “Celebrity Family Feud,” while Michael Strahan presides over Season 7 of the latest “Pyramid” incarnation, in which personalities and their teammates use words and phrases to guess categories (or vice versa) to get to the winner’s circle and a shot or two at big money.

Early Season 10 players on “Celebrity Family Feud” include Gayle King (“CBS Mornings”), Sophia Bush Hughes (“One Tree Hill”) and cast members of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Season 9 saw contests between the casts of “Abbott Elementary” and “Hacks,” stars of “Bel-Air” and the revival of “Saved by the Bell,” Kristin Chenoweth (“Schmigadoon!”) and Kathy Najimy (“Hocus Pocus,” 1993), and Kal Penn (“Designated Survivor”) and Erika Christensen (before she returned to ABC full-time as a star of the series “Will Trent”). Music’s Boyz II Men and the hosts of CBS’ daytime show “The Talk” also got chances for “Feud”-ing last season.

“Celebrity Family Feud” was tried earlier, with “Today’s” Al Roker guiding it during a brief NBC run in the summer of 2008. ABC actually was the home network of the original “Family Feud” when Richard Dawson hosted it from 1976 to 1985, with several others filling that role since its current syndication run began in 1999. Harvey became the host in 2010, and its rise in ratings not only have kept him there since, it paved the way for another run at the “Celebrity” spinoff.

This season on “The $100,000 Pyramid,” the celebrity players include such returnees as Cedric the Entertainer (“The Neighborhood”), Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”),

RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and Mario Cantone (“Sex and the City”). Among others on board are “Jeopardy’s!” Ken Jennings, Amanda Kloots (“The Talk”), “Shark Tank’s” Robert Herjavec, Ross Mathews (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and several veterans of “The Goldbergs”: Wendi McLendon-Covey (who also has played the game before), Sean Giambrone and Troy Gentile. Also an executive producer of the program, Strahan is happy with the outcome.

“This could be the best season that we’ve done,” the NFL veteran, “Good Morning America” co-anchor, Fox Sports personality and one-time astronaut maintains. “And even if not, it has some of the best shows that we’ve done. There’s a lot of fun, a lot of surprises and a lot of good match-ups. The energy is just great.”

Season 2 of reno show

Bold blueprints: Fans, homeowners and design experts alike will all be asking the same question: “Lil Jon Wants to Do What?” when Season 2 of this over-the-top renovation show premieres, Monday, July 10, on HGTV.

The series returns with eight new episodes, starring the Grammy-winning producer, rapper and DJ (now turned home renovator) Lil Jon (“Get Low,” 2002), and after a stellar first season — attracting more than 12.7 million viewers for the network — many are curious to see what the superstar does next.

As with Season 1, Lil Jon is accompanied by designer Anitra Mecadon (“Mega Dens”), who uses her vast expertise to turn Jon’s visions into reality, maxing out homes with what HGTV calls “over-the-top features that wow homeowners and fans alike,” revamping conventional homes with “startlingly unconventional renovations.”

It seems Mecadon will have her work cut out for her, as Jon recently told Discovery: “I can’t wait for viewers to see what we’ve created,” continued Jon. “We went bigger, bolder and way outside of the box for these families. It’s been an incredible experience and I’m excited that soon we get to share it with everyone. Get ready for a wild ride!”

A wild ride indeed, as Episode 1 kicks off with a basement renovation for clients Chris and Dana, who are looking for an epic entertainment area suitable for the whole family. The homeowners hand over their keys – and full creative liberty – allowing Jon and Mecadon to complete a show-stopping renovation that far surpasses their expectations. Upon their return, Chris, Dana and the family are welcomed by a sleek sitting area; an upscale sports bar; a children’s game room, and a home theater with a 100-inch screen, all neatly tucked away in their unsuspecting basement.

City meets country: ‘RHONYC’ alums take on small-town living

“What does anyone know about Benton?” According to “Real Housewives of New York City” alums Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan, not a lot. To them, small-town Benton, Illinois, is a million miles away from the luxurious lives they live on the East Coast. But not for long: these Manhattan-based millionaires are about to get their hands dirty — and learn a whole lot about Benton in the process — when the all-new series “Luann and Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake” premieres, Sunday, July 9, on Bravo. Together, this “Real Housewives of New York City” duo trade in big-city living for small-town American charm as they venture out to Benton in an effort to share their expertise in revitalizing the nearly 7,000-person town.

The city, once a bustling epicenter in its own right, was devastated by the pandemic, losing residents, businesses and a whole lot of hope along the way. Using their vast string of connections — while also creating some new friendships, alliances and teammates along the way — the duo “use their ingenuity to help improve the surroundings and rally the town’s spirits,” as Bravo explains.

In the process, de Lesseps and Morgan learn plenty about their host town, getting down to the nitty-gritty about everything from debilitatingly hot summer temperatures to Benton’s famous “testicle festival” — a spectacle, to say the least.

Benton’s mayor, Lee Messersmith, puts the pair to work on a wide range of projects, seeing these New Yorkers tackle everything from building new playgrounds to revitalizing the local theater scene with a variety show, working with a colorful cast of locals to get the job done. Even off duty, de Lesseps and Morgan dive right into the local culture, “passing the time by searching for the famous crappie fish in the lake with their bare hands or going mudding with monster trucks,” says Bravo.

It’s the adventure of a lifetime, but one with a real-life impact. With an upcoming progress update expected, these former Housewives must “put the stiletto to the metal,” pulling out all the stops to recruit superstar singer Paula Abdul (“Opposites Attract,” 1988) for a little help.

With a little ingenuity — and a whole lot of charm — de Lesseps and Morgan bring the party to Benton, Illinois, when “Luann and Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake” premieres with back-to-back episodes Sunday, July 9, on Bravo.
