Q: Has “Young Rock” been canceled? – Tom Marcus, via e-mail

A: It has. It took NBC a while to decide after the show’s third season ended, but it won’t be getting a fourth. The sitcom based on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s youth started out as a strong performer in linear ratings, and it even was faring respectably in its second year, likely thanks to the draw that Johnson is generally … but from that round to the third and ultimately last one, its ratings basically were cut in half, which was enough for the network to make its determination on whether the series would continue.

“Young Rock” wasn’t the only NBC comedy to experience cancelation in June, since “Grand Crew” also was handed a pink slip at the same time, That series had gotten two seasons, and based on the viewership returns, it can be argued that it made more of an audience impact on the streaming service Peacock than it did on NBC.

A familiar path: ‘Justified’ returns to FX with ‘City Primeval’ sequel

“I just had a general familiarity with ‘Justified,’” she says. “I knew it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation, and I was interested in that because I’m a big reader. Then, when I started working on this, I watched (the original show) and got to see Tim being ‘that guy.’ It was one of those things where you feel a character was written for somebody, even if the author did not have that person in mind.

“There was a great singer named Phyllis Hyman, and Duke Ellington’s granddaughter says that she believes he wrote his songs for Phyllis Hyman even before she was born,” Ellis explains. “There also are acting roles like that, and I just feel that Tim is the person who was meant to walk in these boots.”

To those who enjoyed the initial drama, a sequel to it is likely to seem quite “Justified.”

Timothy Olyphant returns in the further adventures of lawman Raylan Givens as the FX series “Justified: City Primeval” debuts with the first two of its eight episodes Tuesday, July 18. Set 15 years after “Justified” ended, the saga adapts another story by Elmore Leonard (“City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit”) and newly factors Givens into it, with the U.S. marshal living in Miami after his time in Kentucky.

A situation that develops in Florida leads him to Detroit and a vicious felon known as the Oklahoma Wildman (played by Boyd Holbrook, previously of “Narcos”), whose lawyer (“King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis) has her own reasons for wanting to help her client elude the scales of justice.

With Olyphant also an executive producer of the show along with author Leonard’s estate, “Justified: City Primeval” includes Adelaide Clemens (“Rectify”), Vondie Curtis-Hall (“The Recruit”), Marin Ireland (“Hell or High Water,” 2016), double Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (“The Girl From Plainville”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control) and Vivian Olyphant – the star’s daughter, who plays Givens’ offspring – among additional cast members. They’re new to the “Justified” world, as is actress Ellis, who felt she couldn’t go wrong with material that\ originally came from the mind of Leonard.

Much of the appeal for Ellis in playing attorney Carolyn Wilder in “Justified: City Primeval” came from what she defines as “taking that ‘Justified’ world and putting it inside Detroit, and seeing those worlds collide. (Givens) certainly is a fish out of water there, and I love how Carolyn is very confrontational with him. She says, ‘I know how you’ve been doing things, but you can’t do them here … not in my town, and not with me.’”

Still, there’s room for Carolyn to have her own development arc. “There’s the world of justice and the world of law, and sometimes, those don’t meet,” Ellis reasons. “I think Carolyn is one of those people who feel that justice isn’t necessarily found in a courthouse or a legislative building. You have to find it where you can find it, and I think that’s what makes her and Raylan kindred spirits. She does things that are necessary, but she still has to find her footing and be true to herself.”

Most of Ellis’s scenes in “Justified: City Primeval” are with Olyphant, but she also enjoyed sharing on-camera moments with co-star Curtis-Hall (“I just think he’s one of the best actors who has ever acted”). For as many strong women as she has portrayed, she found Carolyn a unique role, maintaining that she has little desire “to pull from other parts. Particularly for a woman on television, there’s an expectation that you fall in line within particular roles, but I wanted something new and something I had to grasp as I went along.”

Build it, Barbie: HGTV’s best recreate Barbie’s Dreamhouse in new series

Barbie is taking over the big screen – and the world at large – as Greta Gerwig’s star-studded film “Barbie” hits theaters Friday, July 21. To celebrate her live-action debut, the best of design are bringing Barbie’s iconic Dreamhouse to life in the “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge,” premiering Sunday, July 16, on HGTV.

According to a news release from HGTV: “Each episode will feature captivating and nostalgic Barbie content as each team implements daring designs synonymous with the iconic Dreamhouse throughout the home.” Once completed, the rooms will be judged by designer (and Barbie collaborator) Jonathan Adler and Barbie Dreamhouse expert Tiffany Brooks (“HGTV Design Star”), who will be joined each week by a different celebrity guest … some of whom may even star in the “Barbie” movie.

During the “larger-than-life,” 90-minute premiere, supermodel and entrepreneur Ashley Graham, who hosts the series, takes the competitors on a trip to the Mattel headquarters for some design inspiration, receiving a gasp-worthy Barbie surprise along the way.

Once the teams are buzzing with ideas, the challenge begins, starting off on the first floor with a showdown between partners Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson (“Married to Real Estate”) and builder Jasmine Roth (“Help! I Wrecked My House”), working alongside Food Network’s Antonia Lofaso (“Beachside Brawl”). The former “take inspiration from the neon 1990s Barbie style to reimagine the entryway, living room and dining room into an over-the-top pink paradise,” explains HGTV, while Jasmine and Antonia “create an awe-inspiring kitchen and family room from the 1960s, with space-age touches.”

New York newbies: ‘RHONYC’ returns for Season 14 with an all-new cast

The hit installment of the Real Housewives franchise, “RHONYC” returns after a two-year hiatus and a serious face-lift, as an all-new cast of housewives are set to be introduced. The Season 14 premiere of “The Real Housewives of New York City,” airs Sunday, July 16, on Bravo.

While not much is known about the six new wives or the dynamic they share, Bravo shared some brief descriptions of what we can expect from these luxurious and industrious New Yorkers.

Sai De Silva, 42, is a proud Afro-Latina woman born and raised in the city. She works as the creative director of Scout the City, which was first a passion project for De Silva, later evolving into a bustling online hub for lifestyle tips and updates from her life as a Brooklyn-based mother of two. She is joined by Ubah Hassan, 35, a Somalian model and philanthropist who moved to New York City and made it home after being spotted and signed by a modeling agency while living in Canada. Hassan is now the founder and owner of her own hot sauce company: UBAHHOT.

A New Yorker since birth, Erin Dana Lichy, 35, was raised in a close-knit Israeli family. Determined even at a young age, Lichy became a real estate agent at 19 and now owns her own home renovation and design firm: Homegirl. The business savvy of these housewives continues with newcomer Jenna Loyns, 55, once the president and executive creative director of the J. Crew group and now the co-founder and CEO of her own direct-to-customer beauty brand, LoveSeen, and Jessel Taank, 43, who works as a fashion publicist and brand consultant, all while caring for her twin sons.

Rounding out the group is Brynn Whitfield, 36, who – originally from the Midwest – now lives in the West Village, building her career as a brand marketing and communications professional. A self-proclaimed “trophy wife in training,” Whitfield is passionate about food, interior design, yoga, and the art of a good dinner party.

Together, these industrious women – some married and some mothers, and all working to invigorate the city around them –act as the bright new faces of the Real Housewives franchise, each bringing all new friendships, relationships and drama to the stage when “The Real Housewives of New York City” returns to The Big Apple with it season premiere airing Sunday, July 16, on Bravo.

Seventeen-year-old Taylor (Ezmie Garcia) lived on the streets until she was taken in by Larry (Linden Ashby) and Sandy Stewart (Alexandra Paul), who adopted her and gave her a chance at a better life. But the new life Taylor built is threatened when an assailant breaks into her home and seriously wounds her father. Taylor returns to the back alleys of LA to find her stalker, triggering a deadly game of cat and mouse.

“Movie: Space Oddity”

When Alex (Kyle Allen) gives up on Earth and decides to leave it all behind for a one-way mission to Mars, an unexpected romance forces him to choose between an uncertain journey to the stars and an even more uncertain journey of the heart. Alexandra Shipp, Madeline Brewer, Simon Helberg and Kevin Bacon also star.
