Q: Are this summer’s episodes of “The $100,000 Pyramid” new? I saw one with Lindsey Vonn that I thought I had seen before. – Gary Andrews, Lancaster, Pa.

A: Most of them are new, but there’s been a mix … and yes, that Lindsey Vonn episode aired a couple of times earlier. The ABC game show hosted by Michael Strahan is running new episodes on Sundays, and if repeats show up, those generally are on other nights such as Wednesdays. The same thing happened with an encore installment that featured Sara Haines of “The View” and “The Chase,” who had been a cohost of the weekday “GMA3” with Strahan before that show changed format during the coronavirus pandemic. Part of the gift of game shows such as “The $100,000 Pyramid” is that they are so repeatable, which is why they’ve also become staples of Game Show Network. And certain celebrity players return from season to season – Cedric the Entertainer and RuPaul Charles are among those who have played multiple times – so it sometimes can be confusing as to whether an ABC broadcast of the game is a repeat or not.

Elvis Presley’s legendary 1968 television special was a turning point not only for him, but for many of the other people involved in it.

One was producer-director Steve Binder, who candidly told the “King” of music that the latter’s career was “in the toilet,” so he needed to do the NBC-televised hour. The result quickly became a legendary piece of television, and Paramount+ looks back at it in the new offering “Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback,” which starts streaming Tuesday, Aug, 15 — the night before the 46th anniversary of Presley’s death, and following the project’s limited showings in movie theaters globally.

While incorporating many segments from the original show, “Reinventing Elvis” examines Presley’s relationship not only with Binder (who narrates the bulk of the film), but also with Col. Tom Parker, the famously strict manager who kept tight control over Presley. Singers Darius Rucker and Drake Milligan are among those who offer comments, along with journalist Alanna Nash and Anita Mann, who was a dancer on the 1968 special.

creatively with the documentary, though he admits he was skeptical at first. “When I was approached to get involved, I said, ‘There are so many third-party stories about Elvis, why do we need another one?’ Then they pitched me their idea, and it really covered 1968 as a whole. I was rooting for them from the sidelines, and I certainly was responsive to any of their requests for more material.”

Music-documentary veteran John Scheinfeld — who also has done projects on John Lennon, John Coltrane, Herb Alpert and Harry Nilsson — directed “Reinventing Elvis,” which also has music-industry legend Spencer Proffer, a longtime Binder associate, as the executive producer who conceived it. “There are so few of us alive today who were there when it all happened,” Binder reflects of the 1968 Elvis show. “There have been specials and books about it, but I never felt that anybody who was there told the real story.

“I was there from the beginning to the end, and it’s so gratifying today to realize what the public response to it was. A number of years ago, somebody approached me and said, ‘Steve, you realize that no matter what you did in the past or do from here on in, you’ll be remembered mostly for the Elvis comeback special’ … and I think they told the truth.”

The entirety of “Reinventing Elvis” serves as a reminder of how major a star Presley was in his time. “We’re so lucky that we partnered with Paramount+,” Binder notes, “because many of Elvis’ movies were done at Paramount, so we were given access to their library and were able to include clips from his films. That was just a stroke of luck, and it sure adds to this. None of the other projects that have been done about the 1968 special were able to clear those rights, I guess.”

For Binder, “Reinventing Elvis” has a personal significance that goes beyond his literally having called the shots on the classic special. “I have nine grandkids and a great-grandchild,” he reports, “and the fact that they’re able to relive this with me now while I’m here is such a bonus and such a pleasure. And it just looks so fresh, even to me, which is very rare when you look back at an old show.”

Sports scandal: ‘Untold’ exposes illegal trade of performance-enhancing drugs

The summer of sports continues, this time taking a trip to the courtroom, when Vol. 3 of the provocative, investigative documentary series “Untold: Hall of Shame” premieres Tuesday, Aug. 15, on Netflix.

Premiering weekly, these character-driven, sports-focused documentaries offer intimate, first-person accounts from the players involved (both on and off the field) in some of sport’s most influential moments. “From boxing to football to doping scandals, these new stories go well beyond the headlines and upend what we thought we knew,” Netfix explains, “reveal[ing] the grit, resilience, heartbreak, triumph, and even humor beneath the sweat.”

In this latest installment, however, heartbreak takes the lead over humor.

According to Sports Illustrated, the BALCO scandal was “the foundation event of what historians and journalists have come to call the ‘Steroid Era’,” changing the lives of many involved, including BALCO founder Victor Conte.

From director Bryan Storkel (“The Pez Outlaw,” 2022), “Untold: Hall of Shame” examines one of the biggest uproars in the sports industry: the BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) steroid scandal of the early 2000s, in which the lab was investigated, tried and later convicted for selling illegal performance-enhancing drugs to athletes.

A news release from Netflix states: “Victor Conte’s name is synonymous with the biggest doping scandal ever to rock the sports community, ensnaring top athletes such as baseball great Barry Bonds and track and field legends Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. For 16 years, Conte swears BALCO Laboratories, his supplement and nutrition company based in the Bay Area, never dabbled in illegal, performance-enhancing drugs. But by 2000, he went to the dark side and became the go-to guy for athletes in search of steroids, fame and world records. The film features interviews with several of Conte’s notable former associates – including Montgomery and the anti-doping and IRS authorities who helped send him to prison after a 42-count indictment – giving harrowing testimony as the legend of one of sport’s most notorious names continues to unfold.”

Our favorite fast-moving couples from the “90 Day” franchise return, hopeful to save their relationships, in “90 Day: The Last Resort,” premiering Monday, Aug. 14, on TLC.

This latest spinoff follows five couples from the “90 Day” series, each of which has reached the make-it-or-break-it point in their relationship. Before tossing in the towel and filing for divorce, they have decided to go all-in on one last attempt to save their struggling relationships: participating in a couples retreat designed to help them reconnect, restructure and reconsider, overall determining whether they will be able to heal long-festering wounds.

As of now, TLC has only announced three of the five participating couples, but fans of the series will certainly remember these “90 Day” hopefuls: Jovi and Yara, Ed and Liz and Angela and Michael – all of whom hope that “The Last Resort” will lead to a fresh new start in their marriages after experiencing disappointments, distance and distrust.

Alongside a team of professionals, the couples will attempt to navigate struggles within their relationships, discussing a variety of important and influential issues, including trust,

jealousy, anger and intimacy – all topics that could potentially make or break a rocky relationship.

During the retreat, the couples will be invited to explore a wide range of activities, including group therapy, couples counseling sessions, past life regressions and other unique activities, located both on and off the resort site. By the end of their time in paradise, each pair must decide once and for all whether they wish to remain together or to move on separately.

Releasing in tandem with the show, TLC is introducing a weekly companion podcast titled “90 Day: The Last Resort Sessions.” The podcast will be hosted by news anchor Sukanya Krishnan (previously from the “Sister Wives” tell-all) and is set to feature therapists Petey Silveira, Janie Lacy and Jason Prendergast (the last of whom will also appear on the series).

Together, they will break down specific relationship issues and discuss big moments from each episode. The podcast will also include listener questions regarding specific relationship/ couples therapy topics, such as cheating, secrets and intimacy issues.
