Dixon days: Daryl dominates new ‘Walking Dead’ series

McBride is expected to reprise her role as Carol in at least one of the premiere season’s six episodes.

In fact, as mentioned by Vanity Fair writer Derek Lawrence in his November 2022 article titled “Norman Reedus Unpacks the Walking Dead Finale and His ‘F—-ing Great’ Spin-Off,” Daryl himself made a nod toward his own future series in the final episodes of the flagship series’ finale.

“It’s not like we’re never gonna see each other again,” Daryl tells Carol in an intimate scene toward the end of ‘Rest in Peace,’” Lawrence writes, noting Carol’s response: “I’m allowed to be a little sad. You’re my best friend.”

Premiering Sunday, Sept. 10, on AMC and AMC+, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” sees the return of Norman Reedus (“The Boondock Saints,” 1999) as on-screen anti-hero Daryl Dixon.

Created by David Zabel (“ER”), “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” is the fifth spinoff from the flagship series, hereafter referred to as TWD, and takes place after TWD’s 11 seasons of horror. And while viewers have already gathered their fair share of Daryl details since his first appearance in TWD’s Season 1 episode “Tell It to the Frogs,” audiences have never seen the troubled “walker”-fighting hero quite like this.

“Daryl Dixon” follows the titular character as he “washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why” (per AMC). According to the official synopsis, “[T]he series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home,” noting that as “he makes the journey ... the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.”

The title of this latest TWD spinoff was announced in October 2022, which is also when filming began in Paris. Despite AMC’s initial desire to produce a series that followed another TWD character, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride, “The Mist,” 2007), the network eventually landed on “Daryl Dixon” as a result of scheduling conflicts with McBride. That said,

And while we have no idea what may be in store for Carol, fans can certainly expect more “Daryl Dixon” beyond the first six episodes. Just last month, AMC announced that the series had already been renewed for a second season.

Also joining the cast for Season 1 is French actress Clémence Poésy, known for her roles in films such as the Harry Potter franchise (beginning in 2005), “In Bruges” (2008) and “Tenet” (2020), among others. Poésy plays Isabelle, a French woman with a dark Parisian past and a connection to a “progressive religious group.” She joins forces with Daryl on his journey.

Scored by an ethereal rendition of Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” the trailer juxtaposes the violence TWD fans have come to expect with the peace and serenity that accompanies a French monastery garden. It just so happens that in this very monastery is where Daryl learns of his next adventure. And without giving anything away, suffice it to say that “The Last of Us” fans may wish to tune in.

When discussing the dawn of “Daryl Dixon” with Lawrence during an interview that occurred pre-WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike, Reedus shared some of his excitement for the spinoff.

“It’s so beautiful, it’s so moving,” Reedus began, “but it’s like [Daryl] got swept away in a tornado and woke up in this foreign land and doesn’t understand anything. There’s French people speaking French, obviously, and part of the story is being confused with what’s around him, trying to figure out what they’re saying, is this going to be a fight, are we going to get along?”

“The French Connection” drives William Friedkin’s

Of the films that the late director William Friedkin was known for, “The French Connection” particularly endures for a number of reasons … not the least of which is one of the screen’s greatest car pursuits, which Friedkin admitted he shot in a renegade style that only enhances its impact and legend. Turner Classic Movies shows the picture Thursday, Sept. 14, to lead a memorial salute to Friedkin, who died in August. He won an Oscar for the fact-inspired 1971 police thriller (named its year’s best picture at the awards), as did Gene Hackman as “Popeye” Doyle, a tough New York detective determined to get the goods on a seemingly untouchable international drug smuggler (Fernando Rey). Roy Scheider also attained stardom as Doyle’s partner, and while there’s much else to recommend about the movie, the chase that puts a wild-driving Doyle on the trail of an overload train is a highlight that’s hard to beat. (TCM has scheduled a second Friedkin tribute night, including “The Exorcist,” for Nov. 26.)

Lifetime movies dawned at just the right time for Brec Bassinger

Q: I was impressed by Brec Bassinger in the “V.C. Andrews’ Dawn” movies. Did she make those while she was still doing “DC’s Stargirl”? – April Kay, via e-mail A: She landed the “Dawn” job shortly after “Stargirl” wrapped filming, and she told us that she felt fortunate to be available for the Lifetime set of four films, with her reporting to the set within days of having her first conversation about the opportunity. She also said that she appreciated the timing of that production, since she felt that diving right into it right after parting company with her “Stargirl” colleagues gave her something else to focus on … rather than only experiencing sadness over the end of her three seasons of work on that show.

Video stars: 2023’s MTV Video Music Awards make history

The 39th annual MTV Video Music Awards show is set to broadcast live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, celebrating music from all genres and videos from some of the most talented players in the industry when it airs Tuesday, Sept. 12, on MTV.

The event began in 1984 with a show held at the Radio City Music Hall. Since then, many categories have been added, changing the industry and making history along the way. This year, for example, all nominees for Artist of the Year are women – this will be the first time any one gender has dominated the category since it was first introduced in 2017.

Football frenzy: McElhenney and Reynolds return to Wales for a new A.F.C. season

Football frenzy: The boys are back in town — and this time, they might even know what they’re doing. Season 2 of “Welcome to Wrexham” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 12, on FX, and will be available to stream the following day on Hulu.

When actors Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool,” 2016) announced their intentions to buy the Wrexham football club — a Welsh professional association club located in Wrexham, North East Wales, operating as the third-oldest club in the world — in 2020, the North American duo was met with many curious glances from football fans across the U.K. and soccer fans back home.

At the time, Wrexham AFC was operating in the National League (the fifth tier of English football, ranked below the Premier League and all three tiers of the English football system), previously described as a mismanaged team barrelling towards the brink of collapse. McElhenney and Reynolds, however, saw nothing but opportunity. With no prior experience, the duo packed their bags and, joined by a crew of cameras, made off to help the team succeed.

A description from FX shares: “‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, U.K., as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club.

“From Hollywood to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, the front office to the pub, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ will track Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the inextricably connected fates of a team and a town counting on two actors to bring some serious hope and change to a community that could use it.”

Throughout the course of the first season, viewers watched as McElhenney and Reynolds took over the team (the Red Dragons), first attempting to qualify for the playoffs before playing towards promotion and eventually taking on Wembley Stadium. The team — and the duo’s knowledge of the game — improved throughout the year, eventually landing them in second place. Despite a successful season, the Red Dragons failed to advance to the fourth tier of the EFL League Two after being knocked out in the semifinals of the promotion playoffs.

In this astrological dating show, each of the debut season’s 12 episodes introduces a single person who represents one of the zodiac signs. This person goes on dates with four bachelors or bachelorettes with whom they have different zodiac compatibilities, hoping that the stars can guide them towards their perfect match. Hosted by Ingrid Guimarães, the series also stars astrologer Papisa, who comments on the events with her knowledge of the astral plane.

Based on B.E. Jones’ novel of the same name, this U.K. thriller follows British couple Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who seem to have it all: a rock-solid marriage; a glamorous new life in New York thousands of miles from their provincial hometown; and still young enough to feel that their whole lives are ahead of them. Until, that is, Liv learns about Will’s affair. Revenge is her only option, and when Will proposes a trip around America’s epic National Parks to give their relationship a fresh start, Liv knows just how to get it.

“Dragons: The Nine Realms”Season 7 (Sept. 14)

As the threat of Buzzsaw (Haley Joel Osment) looms over Rakke town, the Riders must get the Book of Dragons out of his malicious hands to protect dragonkind. Meanwhile, Sledkin’s (Carrie Keranen) dragonsite operation uncovers a new realm along with the formidable Glass Caster dragon and, as tensions rise in Dragon Club, the heroes must band together to become stronger than ever as riders and as friends.
