The ‘Continental’ experience: John Wick franchise gets three-night TV stay

and the puppy is targeted, Wick loses all sensitivity and comes out of retirement to avenge his furry friend. And while Wick’s situation may change from film to film, one thing that remains a constant throughout the franchise is The Continental; and this is where Peacock’s newest series comes in.

Created by Greg Coolidge (“Ride Along,” 2014), Shawn Simmons (“Wayne”) and Kirk Ward (“The Turkey Bowl,” 2019), “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” is a three-part noir-action miniseries that focuses on the history of the mysterious hotel chain that operates as “neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld” (per IMDb).

In the aftermath of the shocking Season 1 finale, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius (Owen Wilson), Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Judge Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

For many of us, when we book a stay in a hotel (particularly a luxury one), comfort ranks above all else. Though the meaning of the word “comfort” varies from one person to the next and could encompass anything from the thread count of the bedsheets to one’s proximity to the bar, “comfort” in the world of John Wick is most closely associated with personal safety.

Those familiar with the John Wick franchise will already be aware of The Continental’s most important rule: the assassins seeking refuge within the hotel shall not conduct any “business” on the grounds. Put simply, no hits will be tolerated on the premises.

That said, NBC/Peacock is certainly hoping for a hit of its own (granted, a “hit” of a different kind) when the new miniseries “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” begins streaming Friday, Sept. 22, on Peacock.

John Wick (Keanu Reeves, “The Matrix,” 1999), the trained assassin who lends his name to the franchise supported by The Continental Hotel, first made audiences fall in love with him in the 2014 film, simply titled “John Wick.” Despite his former career as a hitman, Wick exhibits a soft side while taking care of a new beagle puppy in the wake of his wife’s death. However, when a group of gangsters breaks into Wick’s home

Colin Woodell (“The Flight Attendant”) stars as a young Winston Scott, the manager of The Continental’s New York division and a character already known to franchise fans thanks to the work of “Deadwood” actor Ian McShane. The role of Winston is a meaty one for Woodell, filled with lots of backstory for both character and setting as the series’ events dive deep into real-life New York crime history.

While the specifics of the miniseries are being kept a secret for obvious reasons, there has been word that the events take place over three nights at The Continental in the 1970s and that there is a correlation to both the Winter of Discontent and the rise of the American Mafia.

Additionally, audiences can expect to see a few familiar faces along the way; most notably that of controversial actor Mel Gibson (“Braveheart,” 1995). Joining Gibson and Woodell on the small screen are Nhung Kate (“The Housemaid,” 2016) as Yen, Katie McGrath (“Supergirl”) as the Adjudicator, Jessica Allain (“The Laundromat,” 2019) as Lou, Adam Shapiro (“Never Have I Ever”) as Lemmy, Jeremy Bobb (“The Knick”) as Mayhew, Dan Li (“Luther: The Fallen Sun,” 2023) as Orphan Master, Sallay Garnett (“Conversations with Friends”) as the Concierge, Peter Greene (“Pulp Fiction,” 1994) as young Uncle Charlie (portrayed later in life by “Twin Peaks” reboot actor David Patrick Kelly), and new talent Ayomide Adegun as Charon, a role made famous by beloved actor and TV personality Lance Reddick (“White House Down,” 2013), who died earlier this year.

Recalling Kaley Cuoco’s “Charmed” existence classiccorner

What turned out to be the final season of “Charmed” added someone to the cast who would become an even bigger star on another show soon afterward: Kaley Cuoco. TNT runs the eighth-and-last-season premiere episode of the sibling-witch saga (titled “Still Charmed & Kicking”) Friday, Sept. 29, with Phoebe, Piper and Paige (played by Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan) presumed to be deceased … which is not the case. They hope that being free of any expectations from others will allow them to reboot their lives, but that wish crumbles fairly quickly, as Paige has to help another sorceress (Cuoco) who has gotten herself into trouble while on a quest to locate her own missing sister. Though she only was in the concluding year of this series, Cuoco wouldn’t be out of work very long, relatively speaking, since “The Big Bang Theory” started a year later.

Damian Lewis gets his “Billions” payoff

Q: Damian Lewis’s return to “Billions” is very welcome. Why did he leave the show in the first place? – Steve Dayton, Orlando, Fla.

A: When the actor signed off as Bobby “Axe” Axelrod after the first five seasons of the Showtime and Paramount+ With Showtime drama, his wife – actress Helen McCrory (”Peaky Blinders,” “Skyfall”) – had recently passed. He hasn’t addressed that as the specific reason for his leaving, but it undoubtedly had a contributing impact. In terms of his coming back to “Billions,” it likely was appealing to Lewis to know that he would have a limited run, since this is the final season of the show. It also lets Axe get back to being Axe, since this round will do much to determine the character’s enduring legacy, which could continue (though it hasn’t been guaranteed) if he resurfaces in one of the “Billions” spinoffs that are being planned.

A celebration of arts, science, entrepreneurship and more, 2023’s “Hispanic Heritage Awards” will be broadcast Friday, Sept. 29, on PBS.

“The historic ‘Hispanic Heritage Awards,’ which were created by the White House to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month in America, are among the highest honors by Latinos for Latinos and supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions,” the Hispanic Heritage Foundation states, shared in a description on their website (hispanicheritage.org). The event has now been taking place annually for 36 years, highlighting greatness in countless fields.

This year, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation honors many talented nominees, including Latin music icon WISIN (“Multimillo Vol. 1,” 2022), for the Vision Award; NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde, for the Media Award; Grammy Award-winning musical pioneers Café Tacvba (“MTV Unplugged,” 2005), for the Arts Award; Miguel, Veronica and Aida Garza, co-founders of Siete Family Foods, for the Entrepreneurship Award; and the Grammy-nominated Omar Apollo (“Ivory,” 2022), for the Inspira Award.

Apollo is also scheduled to perform throughout the evening, alongside fellow nominee Café Tacvba, host Leslie Grace, artists Alejandra Guzman (“Flor de Papel,” 1991), A Centennial Tribute To Tito Puente-Starring: Tito Puente Jr. (“Got Mambo?,” 2010), Milly Quezada (“Vive,” 1998) and Alex Cuba (“Mendó,” 2021), Pedrito Martínez (“Acertijos,” 2021) and others.

Bye-bye Blake: ‘The Voice’ returns minus one country superstar

NBC’s “The Voice” returns for its 24th season, premiering Monday, Sept. 25. One familiar face, however, won’t be returning with the rest, as long-running “Voice” coach Blake Shelton (“Body Language,” 2021) announced he won’t be returning to the series for the first time in its 12-year history.

According to NBC, the star has left the show in order to spend more time with family on his Oklahoma ranch, with Shelton having previously been quoted as saying: “I’ve been wrestling with this for a while, and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after Season 23.”

“This show has changed my life in every way for the better,” he continued, “and it will always feel like home to me. It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns, and I want to thank everyone at ‘The Voice’ from NBC, every producer, the writers, musicians, crew and catering people; you are the best.

“[...] I’ve made lifelong bonds with [host] Carson [Daly] and every single one of my fellow coaches over the years, including my wife, Gwen Stefani! I have to give a huge shout-out to the singers, the ‘Voices,’ who come on this stage season after season and amaze us with their talent, and a special thanks to those who chose me to be their coach. Lastly, it’s about y’all, the fans, who watch and support these artists, us coaches, and everyone at ‘The Voice’ who are chasing their dreams. It would not happen without you!”

Season 23’s mega mentor Reba McEntire (“Reba,” 1988) is set to fill the country star’s mighty big boots (and his chair) during Season 24, joining veteran coaches Niall Horan (“The Show,” 2023), John Legend (“Bigger Love,” 2020) and Gwen Stefani (“The Sweet Escape,” 2006).

This will be Stefani’s first season on “The Voice” without her husband (Shelton) coaching alongside her. While appearing on a talk show earlier this year, Stefani commented on the upcoming absence, joking: “Hopefully, it’ll give me a chance to win, so there’s that.”

Previously, Stefani won The Voice once (Season 19, with Carter Rubin), while Shelton leaves the show with nine wins under his belt (seasons 2, 3, 4, 7, 11, 13, 18, 20 and 22).

Whether Stefani will cinch a win, fans will have to wait and see when “The Voice” returns for Season 24, premiering Monday, Sept. 25, on NBC.
