Missing no more: Procedural drama takes sinister turn in ‘Found’

To make matters even more intriguing, Gabi has a plan for Sir.

Convinced that, as a former abductor himself, Sir knows the ins and outs of the criminal psyche and its various resulting behaviors, Gabi enlists his help as a consultant. With each new case she brings home, Sir is forced to help her find the victims of these heinous abductions and turn the kidnappers over to the authorities for investigation, (hopefully) a guilty verdict and sentencing.

Ian (Carlos Scholz), a rebellious teenager living on the outskirts of society, can manipulate minds with his ability to generate visual illusions. He uses this power to survive, running small, indiscreet scams. When one of his cons goes awry, his abilities publicly spiral out of control and Ian becomes the target of two rival organizations, each seeking to exploit his powers. María Pedraza, Pedro Alonso, Óscar Jaenada and Lela Loren also star.

According to NamUS’s October 2022 report, in the United States, approximately 600,000 people are reported as missing annually — no doubt a much higher number than many of us might expect.

As true crime aficionados and law enforcement can likely attest, only a fraction of these missing people are ever found, and with each passing hour, their cases become more and more dire. Thankfully, there are a handful of people in the world who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to help, and one such person — on screen, at least — is Gabi Mosely, the leading character in NBC’s newest procedural drama “Found,” premiering Tuesday, Oct. 3, and streaming the following day on Peacock.

Played by “Shameless” star Shanola Hampton, Gabi is a hard-working, determined public relations expert who specializes in finding Americans who have been reported as missing. As she leads a team of professionals in their shared noble work, Gabi does her best to parse her own past as a missing person. That said, Gabi’s methods for dealing with her demons could arguably use a bit of work.

As viewers quickly learn, Gabi has turned the proverbial tables on her former captor and has taken him hostage for a change — not exactly legal, but certainly satisfying. Now, despite her outwardly calm and put-together exterior, Gabi must hide the fact that she has a man, known only as “Sir” (played by “Saved by the Bell’s” Mark-Paul Gosselaar), tied up in her very own basement while she seeks justice for the remainder of the missing Americans on the register.

While “Found” was originally scheduled for a Feb. 19 premiere this year, NBC announced the show’s postponement in mid-January, believing it to be better suited to an autumn release.

“After watching the first few episodes of ‘Found,’ it quickly became clear that our love for this show has continued to grow and grow with each step of the process,” Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal television and streaming, said in a January news release.

“Our goal is always to find the absolute best home for all our series, and it’s particularly the case with one as important as this,” Rovner continued. “By moving it to fall, we’re able to better leverage our resources, including lead-in and marketing muscle, enabling us to launch ‘Found’ to the largest possible audience across all our platforms.”

The cast and crew of “Found” certainly have their work cut out for them with such an important topic. Thankfully, series stars Hampton and Gosselaar have some help bringing awareness to the subject. Kelli Williams (“The Practice”), Brett Dalton (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Arlen Escarpeta (“The Oath”), Gabrielle Walsh (“9-1-1”) and Karan Oberoi (“Counterpart”) star as cohorts of Gabi’s, helping her in her hunt for justice, while Azaria Carter (“P-Valley”) stars as teenaged Gabi in flashbacks.

Bill Kelly (“True Detective”), Sterling Jones (“Barbie,” 2023), Rena Maliszewski (“CODA,” 2021), Mike Whaley (“Under the Dome”) and Monique Grant (“Swagger”) also star.

Directed by Herbert Ross, Neil Simon’s delightful 1977 romantic comedy “The Goodbye Girl” — which Turner Classic Movies shows Sunday, Oct. 1 — started out as a different project, but morphed into this highly entertaining tale casting Marsha Mason (the writer’s then-wife) as a single mother forced to share a New York apartment with a brash actor (Richard Dreyfuss) who initially gets on her nerves. That’s actually putting it mildly, but things eventually warm up between them after a long series of fits and starts.

Dreyfuss won an Academy Award for his performance, capitalizing on the screen persona he had made known through his successes in “American Graffiti” and “Jaws,” and he has considerable fun spoofing the acting profession as his character appears in a show-within-the-show. Also a vital cast member is Quinn Cummings as Mason’s wiser-than-her-years young daughter. The hit theme song is performed by David Gates, who was a member of the pop group Bread.

Television work was right for Bob Barker

Q: I was saddened to learn that Bob Barker died. I know he hosted “Truth or Consequences” before “The Price Is Right,” but did he host any other shows before that? – Ron Gordon, via e-mail

A: Not on television, but he had his own radio program originating from Southern California, after he had worked at stations in Missouri and Florida. It was while he was working at Los Angeles station KNX – still in operation as an all-news outlet – and interacting with audience members that he came to the attention of television host and producer Ralph Edwards, who was seeking someone to front the weekday-TV version of “Truth or Consequences.” The offer went out to Barker, and the rest is genuine television history.

Lucrative lovers: New docuseries delves into alleged online love cult

“Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe” premieres Friday, Oct. 6, on Prime Video.

Directed by two-time Primetime Emmy-winning filmmaker Marina Zenovich (“Lance,” 2020), the series is inspired by journalist Alice Hines’ investigation and subsequent Vanity Fair article, “Everywhere I Went, They Went With Me, Because They Were on My Phone,” this three-part documentary series unveils the dark and twisted truth behind the Twin Flames Universe — an “alleged online love cult,” as Prime Video describes it.

The Twin Flames Universe — a group run by a pair of Michigan suburbanites, YouTube influencers Jeff and Shaleia Divine — is a site that promises to match members with their perfect partner. Throughout her investigation, however, Hines went on to discover a much more complicated truth, as former participants described the extreme measures expected of them in order to claim their “twin flame” (their soulmate, so to speak).

In her article, Hines described: “Students shared their relationship problems while Jeff and Shaleia extracted sublime truths about their hopes and traumas. Subscriptions to the full run of this therapeutic reality show, and its offshoots, currently cost $4,444. The appeal of Twin Flames Universe was that you could have what Jeff and Shaleia apparently had, what Shaleia called ‘a deeper level of oneness,’ a Harmonious Twin Flame Union.” The manipulation — financial, emotional, spiritual and otherwise — continued from there, according to past subscribers.

Caught on tape: ‘AFV’ nears 900 episodes with premiere of 34th season

With countless hosts, more than 850 episodes and decades of history on broadcast television, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” returns with new episodes when Season 34 premieres Sunday, Oct. 1, on ABC.

As we prepare for the return of funny animal videos and pranks gone wrong, Season 1 of this series — the network’s longest-running prime-time entertainment show — often feels like it aired in the not-so-distant past. “AFV,” however, is now legally old enough to drive, to vote, to rent a car — and no matter how it changes and grows, it tickles our funny bones just the same way.

What started as a television special in 1989 (itself based on the Japanese variety show “Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan”) quickly became a regular weekly series, as Bob Saget (“Full House”) took the lead as host and welcomed American viewers to the quirky world of “AFV.” Since its inception, the show’s format has stayed mostly the same, shining a spotlight on everyday people as viewers, fans and pranksters alike submit hilarious home videos involving everything from outrageous physical comedy and wildly intelligent toddlers to “trick shots” gone wrong and marriage proposal mishaps.

The submitted clips are played in front of a live studio audience who then vote on the funniest videos of the week. Each episode, the first palace winner is awarded a cash prize and offered the opportunity to return for the series’ next competition round, where they vie for a much larger prize — now, a purse set at $100,000. This continues until the end of the season, when previous winners compete for even more cash and an exclusive, all-inclusive vacation package.

Some little details, however, have changed. Saget retired after Season 8, when “AFV” then ran occasional special episodes hosted by various actors and comedians. Two years later, Tom Bergeron (“Hollywood Squares”) took on the role, then acted as the face of “AFV” for the next 15 years.

Current viewers would recognize “Dancing with the Stars” alum Alfonso Ribeiro (also of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”) as the series’ latest steadfast captain. Ribeiro hosted through the series’ historic 30th season and saw the show make history as it pivoted to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic, introducing a new segment called “AFV@Home.”
