Q: Will the start of the new season of “Magnum P.I.” be delayed? – Jennifer Oliver, Kansas City, Mo.

A: Possibly, but it also could be moved up. Technically the second half of the Jay Hernandez-starring reboot’s fifth season, which NBC decided to split in two when it picked up the show after CBS’ cancellation of it, it is slated to begin at midseason after the completion of “Sunday Night Football” (as was the case this past winter). The filming was done as if the series was making the complete season at once, per tradition, and the writers’ strike –which has led to delays in the making of other shows – may necessitate a need for the new “Magnum” episodes (which already have been filmed) sooner when the 2023-24 television season begins. Time, and the length of the strike and NBC’s programming needs, will tell.

Final assignment: ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ starts his last Prime Video mission

Jack Ryan has had several screen lives, via a variety of actors, and his latest one is about to begin its final round.

John Krasinski returns as the CIA analyst who typically finds himself in the thick of action as the fourth and final season of the Prime Video adventure-drama “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” premieres Friday, June 30. Arriving six months after Season 3 began – an unusually short span between seasons for a streaming series – the program will debut two of its six new episodes each Friday, and the concluding story tests Ryan in terms of enemies both foreign and domestic.

Now the acting deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Ryan is concerned with the behavior of his own operatives as he starts a probe of possible corruption. Before long, though, he discovers several black ops situations that might make America vulnerable to plots from overseas … with the union of a drug cartel and a terrorist group potentially spelling very bad things for the United States, and challenging Ryan’s strongly held beliefs in right, wrong and justice.

Krasinski also is among the executive producers of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” on which novelist Clancy is given the same credit posthumously. Other returning cast members include Wendell Pierce – a Tony Award nominee this year for “Death of a Salesman” – as Ryan’s former supervisor James Greer, and Abbie Cornish in a reprise of her Season 1 role as Ryan’s girlfriend (and, per the Clancy books, eventual wife) Dr. Cathy Mueller. The new season also features Michael Pena as Domingo Chavez, the protagonist of an intended spinoff series.

As mentioned, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” is the latest iteration of a franchise that dates back to 1987 in print (“Patriot Games” was the first novel) and to 1990 on film. “The Hunt for Red October” was the initial Ryan movie, and though he certainly was a major character as played by Alec Baldwin, top billing went to the star who played the character Ryan was investigating: Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius.

The film was an enormous hit for its time, making more than $200 million worldwide, and one only can speculate

whether the result would have been the same if the originally intended casting (Kevin Costner as Ryan, Klaus Maria Brandauer as Ramius) had stuck. The outcome virtually demanded a follow-up, and that arrived in 1992 with the screen version of “Patriot Games,” but with a significant change in the actor playing Ryan.

Stories differ as to why Baldwin didn’t return, mostly related to the timing of his commitment to a Broadway revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” but Harrison Ford got the part next … and not just for one film, but for two. Harrison Ford, who had built a reputation for brainy action tales, was enlisted to assume the part; that turned out to be a good move, since the picture grossed slightly under $180 million internationally in its original theatrical run.

That made Paramount Pictures feel good about retaining Ford for 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger,” though Clancy hadn’t been happy with the “Patriot Games” movie and had considered withholding the screen rights to other Ryan stories. (A considerable financial incentive for the author reportedly resolved that hurdle.) Despite problems caused by Mexican-location unrest and earthquake-damaged footage, all turned out well, with “Clear and Present Danger” becoming the franchise’s top-grossing entry with $216 million worldwide.

An exploration of creation and destruction, the all-new globe-trotting series “Human Footprint” premieres Wednesday, July 5, on PBS.

Hosted by biologist and Princeton University professor Shane Campbell-Staton, Ph.D., this documentary series “takes viewers from farms to restaurants, from a high-tech lab to a sweltering street market, from pristine rain forests to the sewers of New York City” to explore the ways humans are transforming the planet and what those transformations tell us about who we are as a species (according to PBS), utilizing an original score composed by legendary hip-hop artist Adrian Younge (“Jazz is Dead 001,” 2020).

Through the course of the show, Shane discovers that “the clearest version of who we are emerges from what we do” (per PBS), as he meets an eclectic cast of amazing individuals, talking to everyone from “scientists and historians to rat exterminators and dog dancing gurus” as he attempts to unravel the complex motivations behind our actions as a species and the impact we leave behind.

Jukebox heroes: Netflix’s ‘WHAM!’ documentary shines a spotlight on ‘80s duo

Part concert film, part documentary, this feature-length picture focuses on the rise and fall of the classic ‘80s musical duo composed of Andrew Ridgeley and the late George Michael (1963-2016), who together tell an impeccable story of stardom and a rise to fame that happened in a blink of an eye. “WHAM!” premieres Wednesday, July 5, on Netflix.

Told for the very first time through the eyes of Michael and Ridgeley, “WHAM!” explores how two 18-year-olds from London, England, set out to take the music world by storm in 1982 and accomplished just that in only a few years’ time, as the superstar pop group dominated the charts with long-standing hit classics such as “Club Tropicana” (1983), “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” (1984), “Freedom” (1985), “I’m Your Man” (1986), the holiday favorite “Last Christmas” (1986) and many more, with multiple tracks earning No. 1 Billboard status on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

The duo found themselves in a white-hot spotlight, bright but short-lived, as WHAM! played their final, iconic show at Wembley Stadium in 1986, only four years after the band’s founding. Only in their early twenties at the time of their split, both Michael and Ridgeley went on to have careers of their own, with Michael going on as a highly-successful solo artist, releasing hits of his own through the ‘80s, ‘90s and beyond, such as “Careless Whisper” (1984), “Faith” (1987) and “Fastlove” (1996), earning himself two Grammys along the way. Ridgeley, meanwhile, moved on to try performing on stages of a different sort, first trying his hand at Formula Three racing before eventually moving to Los Angeles to pursue a short-lived acting career. By 1990, Ridgeley returned to live in the U.K. and has been participating heavily in charity work ever since.

“With unprecedented access to both George and Andrew’s personal archive, including remarkable and never-before-seen footage alongside rare, candid and previously unheard interviews, ‘WHAM!’ charts their incredible journey from school friends to superstars,” promises a news release from Netflix.

A remake of the classic western film from 1957, this 2007 action flick follows outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), who terrorized 1800s Arizona, especially the Southern Railroad, until he was finally captured. Wade must be brought to trial in Yuma to answer for his crimes, so Dan Evans (Christian Bale), the owner of a drought-stricken ranch, volunteers to escort him to the train.

Based on the novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, this 2012 fantasy horror film is set in 1800s America. After loosing his mother to a vampire bite and barely escaping with his life as a boy, Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) dedicated his life to getting revenge. He is rescued by Henry (Dominic Cooper), a charismatic vampire hunter who instructs Abe in the fine art of dispatching bloodsuckers.
