On behalf of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to Edisto Island – South Carolina’s bestkept secret. Edisto is the ultimate vacation destination. Come rent a beach cottage, throw a cast net for shrimp, dip your toes in the surf, or build a sandcastle. Experience the perfect combination of oceanfront beaches, saltwater marshes and Lowcountry oaks draped in Spanish moss. A year-round temperate climate provides for excellent outdoor recreational opportunities. Our coastal waters are filled with fish, shrimp, crabs and oysters. Take a leisurely bike ride, hike a nature trail, or kayak in a tidal creek. Beach walks and golf are yet another popular pastime for that perfect day on Edisto. We invite you to enjoy local seafood in our restaurants and look for unique items in our gift shops. Historic sites are prevalent on the Island and our picturesque roads beg for a drive. We have a rich cultural heritage in which you can share. Boat and land tours are available. Our casual lifestyle and slow pace are a welcome break from the rush of everyday life. For your most memorable vacation, come to where the rivers meet the ocean and let your cares drift away. We welcome you and hope your stay is so enjoyable that you just can’t wait to come back! Please stop by the Chamber office, 430 Highway 174, for information about our area. You may reach us at 888-333-2781 or 843-869-3867.

Edisto’s Loggerhead Turtles There are so many reasons to love Edisto, but perhaps one of the greatest stems from the island being a favorite nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles. Loggerheads have lived in the oceans since the age of the dinosaurs, and have been nesting on Edisto long before man settled here. The loggerhead, like all sea turtles, is an amazing, air breathing reptile. The loggerhead is found in ocean waters throughout the world, but nests only on warm tropical and sub-tropical beaches. Only the females come ashore. The turtle will drag her great body ashore at night to dig a nest, deposit her eggs, cover the nest, and return to the ocean in about an hour and a half to three hours. In a single nest, the turtle will lay approximately 120 ping pong size leathery eggs. Depending on the warmth of the sand, the eggs will incubate and hatch in 45 to 60 days. The temperature of the sand also determines the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer sands will produce more females and cooler temperatures will result in more males. On Edisto, hatching occurs from July through October. The baby loggerheads usually emerge from the nest as a group under the cover of darkness. Once in the water they appear to be solitary creatures, and each must fend for

6 Edisto Island

FACTS : • Female Loggerhead Turtles nest every 2 to 3 years. • Nesting turtles will lay 3 to 5 clutches in a single season. Once the nest is laid, the female never visits her nest again. • Mature turtles weigh between 250 and 400 pounds. • Only adult females come ashore. Males spend their entire life in the ocean. • Sea turtles cannot retract their heads or flippers as land turtles do. • Adult Loggerheads are reddish brown above and creamy yellow below. • Between 50 and 150 nests are found on Edisto each year. • Nesting females are skittish and avoid lighted beaches. • Hatchling turtles are attracted to light and often go the wrong way. • Though other species visit, only Loggerheads nest here.

itself. Any animal larger than the three inch hatchling can be a predator. The hatchlings must swim for many hours to reach the open sea where it is believed they live for several years in the floating sargasum weed along the edges of the ocean currents. It is estimated that only one hatchling in a thousand will survive to maturity. For this reason it is necessary to protect nests and hatchlings for the continued survival of the species.

The following organizations make significant contributions through educational efforts and specific steps to protect the turtles and their nesting areas: The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project (P.O. Box 204, Edisto Island SC 29438, 843-869-9030, 843-869-4422) The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project has a group of dedicated volunteers that walk our beaches each morning from May through October looking for turtle tracks. They will first mark the area with flags and then locate the nest. If the nest is in an area that is threatened by the tides, they will relocate the nest to higher ground. Nests are marked with a yellow sign and stakes are placed around the nest. The volunteers perform many duties essential to the protection of the nests, primarily checking each

one as they make their morning rounds. Once the nest has hatched, the volunteers collect valuable data to report to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The volunteers cannot do their job without the assistance of the public. You can help by reporting any unauthorized activities, disturbance of nests, or harassment of nesting females to proper authorities. If you see unmarked turtle tracks, an injured turtle, or a dead sea turtle, please check the stakes in that territory for the phone numbers of the volunteers who are responsible for that particular area.

Learning through Loggerheads (843-869-2998, ltlturtles@gmail.com, or www.ltlonline.org) Learning through Loggerheads hatched as a nonprofit with 501(c)3 status from a loggerhead sea turtle project management effort that started nine years ago. Their efforts are visible as part of the loggerhead sea turtle protection project currently focused on Botany Island (located north of Edisto Island). This area is the second highest nesting population of loggerhead sea turtles in the state of South Carolina. Through this project, local middle and high school students work as interns during the summer months. The management of the project (through a scholarship program) is the only opportunity of its kind on the South Carolina coast where student interns are trained, work and are paid for their internships. Interns participate in all aspects of the loggerheads’ protection through daily monitoring, nest protection, data collection and educational outreach for the second largest nesting aggregation on the South Carolina coast. Learning through Loggerheads has established annual collaborative programs with The South Carolina Aquarium, The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, and The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Edisto Beach Interpretive Center (843-869-4430, 8377 State Cabin Road, Tue-Sat from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.) With the theme “Choosing to Protect Our Coast,” the Edisto Interpretive Center helps promote the wise use of coastal resources. It is headquarters for Edisto Beach State Park’s interpretive programs and curriculum-based field studies, and for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ education and research services. An exhibit in the center features interactive displays, including a touch tank, which helps visitors understand the fragile resources of the ACE Basin estuarine reserve, the largest such natural reserve on the East Coast. Loggerhead Sea Turtle Walks are held during the summer months.

Edisto Island 7

Turtle Related Tours: Frequently, visitors want to either see a turtle laying eggs or watch the hatchlings make their way back to the water. Remember that turtle sightings, hatching, etc. are entirely on the turtles’ schedule and thus you cannot schedule a visit or walk to observe this event in their life cycle. While the Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project and The Learning through Loggerheads Organization focuses their efforts on protection and education about the turtles and their nests, visitors who would like an educational tour should consider the following options: • The Edisto Interpretive Center (843-869-4430) Hosts Loggerhead Sea Turtle Walks every Tuesday and Thursday nights (June, July, and August). Call for reservations, and note that these walks are not suitable for Children under the age of 11.

• Botany Bay Ecotours (843-869-2998, tours@botanybayplantation.com, www.botanybayplantation.com) Provides ecotours crafted to help people enjoy and understand the amazing plants and animals that make this area their home. Their programs combine cultural history with the natural history because they have been inextricably linked since humans first arrived along our coast. They support environmental stewardship by donating a portion of their proceeds to the Learning through Loggerheads student conservation program and local non-profits like the Edisto Island Community Association scholarship fund.

Information for this summary was obtained from brochures and web site info from the following organizations; The Edisto Beach State Park, The Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project, Learning through Loggerheads, and Botany Bay Ecotours.

Among them are many representations of the most important species of reptiles in the Americas.

Edisto Museum Explore the history and artifacts unique to Edisto Island, South Carolina, a special place with a fascinating story to share. For well over 300 years, Native Americans, Spanish priests, Spanish pirates, English settlers, Africans, and others including a famous Motown musician have come to Edisto Island and left their influence on this beautiful and unique island. At the Edisto Museum, you can learn what they left behind, and all of these objects have a story to tell. From its opening in 1991, the Edisto Museum has preserved the objects of Edisto Island and interpreted them to illustrate the history and natural history of the Island.

Botany Bay Plantation Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area It was a special place to those who came before, and it remains special to those who will come after...if they understand the specific ethics of the larger ACE Basin, in which it plays a uniquely special part. It is the Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area. Protected as private lands handed down through centuries by planters made rich by Edisto’s slave laborers working its fertile ground, Civil War and Reconstruction led to industrial tycoons discovering the natural treasures of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Plantation after plantation, bought for getaways and recreation, evolved into the conservation ethic of “This is my land and it shall be Forever Wild.” Those last words, “Forever Wild,” today appear on bumper stickers provided by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which oversees Botany Bay. In relative terms, Botany Bay is not true wilderness, but its almost one-fourth of Edisto Island is more wilderness than any other. Its guardians – officials and volunteers – need the help of visitors to keep it so.

12 Edisto Island

Botany Bay is afforded the protections of being a S.C. Heritage Trust site and part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve, as well as one of DNR’s Wildlife Management Areas. But Phil Maier, part of the management team at Botany, says “don’t get bogged down in the nuances associated with those various designations, the focus of each is similar with emphasis on maintaining complete natural systems while providing opportunities for compatible human uses.” He goes on to say that “whether we enjoy our natural resources directly through recreation, value them for the clean waters they help to protect, or simply recognize their role in mitigating the impacts of storms, we can all find benefit in rich and healthy natural resources.” Among many DNR managed properties statewide, Botany Bay is unique. It is, in addition to being a cultural heritage site as well as open to hunting during appropriate seasons, centered smack in one of the Lowcountry’s most popular tourist destinations. Estimates vary for its first full season, but between 50,000 to 100,000 visitors may come to Botany Bay in 2009. Maier’s job isn’t easy. “The central role of DNR managed properties to maintaining (the state’s) natural and cultural character (as) the foundation of our quality of life here.” He adds “the value of our properties as places to peacefully enjoy nature through passive recreation is one that will only escalate as development continues.” Among experienced outdoor people, including fishermen and hunters (at least among that majority with a proper outlook) passive recreation clichés apply: “leave it as you found it” and “pack it in pack it out.” In Botany Bay’s case, special dispensations have been made in the interest of inspiring children to the “proper outlook” of conservation. Accompanied by an adult, children only may “catch and release” fish in Jason’s Lake, and may take a quart of sea shells from the beach. It is worth noting that sea shells are the only thing that may be legally removed from Botany Bay. In many locations surveillance is routine, especially of historical sites. There are also other rules. For instance if you have a dog or a trailer, leave them at home or where you’re staying, to avoid being turned away at the gate. Most of the time you will be welcomed at the gate by a volunteer who will inform you of other regulations, and help you find your way with a map and safety suggestions. For those new to the kind of outdoor experience provided by Botany Bay, it is wise to remember that nature, in all its beneficence, has its dangers. Walking “off trail” and swimming or boating, local knowledge and preparation are the antidotes for things that swarm, bite and sting. Botany’s staff and volunteers are prepared to assist all who venture into their domain. Please assist them in leaving Edisto’s treasure as you found it. The Plantation Course at Edisto www.theplantationcourseatedisto.com 843-869-1111 Welcome to our little part of the world. In a well-hidden and protected spot in the center of South Carolina’s coastal Lowcountry, rests Edisto Island. We are unlike our neighbors to the north, Kiawah and Seabrook, and our friends, Fripp and Hilton Head to the south. We’re rich in history, wildlife, and natural beauty while maintaining a strong position to resist change that is not beneficial to our community. The absence of noise, traffic lights, congestion, and commercialism appeals to residents and visitors alike. A visit to Edisto is certain to win your approval provided you enjoy a laid back and relaxed lifestyle. The sole golf course on the island enjoys an interesting history dating back to its origin in 1973. Originally known as ‘Oristo’ and later as ‘The Edisto Beach Golf Club,’ the course takes pride in its new name, ‘The Plantation Course at Edisto.’ After completing a total renovation of the course in 2006 and moving into our new Pro Shop in May 2007, we can insure that your golfing experience will be enjoyable and memorable. We hope the following preview will be helpful to you in making your plans for a visit to Edisto and The Plantation Course in the near future. The island known as Edisto is rich in history. Stories abound of the Indians who first enjoyed the area, on to the struggles and battles of the Civil War years, and later the Mystic of the Plantation days. By Van... ACE Basin Tours (843-521-3099, 866-521-3099, www.acebasintours.com, info@acebasintours.com) GO WILD! Explore the natural beauty, the wildlife and the history of the ACE Basin. The ACE Basin is formed by the confluence of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers and constitutes a pristine nature preserve of marshes, streams, rivers and sea islands on the Atlantic coast near Beaufort, South Carolina. ACE Basin Tours, located on the Intracoastal Waterway outside of Beaufort, conducts regular and charter tours of the ACE Basin aboard the Dixie Lady, a 40-passenger covered pontoon boat.

Edisto Island Tours & T’ings (“Pink Van Tour” – 843-869-1110, www.thepinkvantour.com) All plantation homes on Edisto are private property, making self-guided tours impossible. Edisto Island’s oldest tour company offers the only tour with exclusive access to private plantation grounds. Experience the charm of true Edisto with a native Edistonian as your guide. Two-hour tour by van of Edisto’s churches, plantations, and other points of interest.

Tours of Edisto (843-869-1984) Step back in time and hear the stories of Edisto’s past as told by a native of the island. Visit the private grounds of beautiful old homes and see historic churches. This van tour will run between 2 and 2 1/2 hours, Monday through Friday. Reservations are required.

On the Water... Captain Jimmy Bell’s Edisto Shrimp Boat Charters (www.edistoshrimpboatcharters.com, 843-869-2726 or 843-607-5347) Their tours are fun, scenic, kid friendly, and educational. Choose to sightsee, fish, shrimp, or explore. Experience the sights and activities that will amaze and excite you and your family. Your charter boat captain has navigated the waters around Edisto for over 30 years. He cultivated a deep appreciation for the intricate beauty of the ecosystem. Predawn hours were spent shrimping on the open water, and warm afternoons were spent with his family, enjoying the rich variety of the rivers and tidal creeks. These tours will offer a unique insight into Edisto’s native beauty through colorful accounts of its maritime history and gracious mysteries from an insider’s lifetime of experience. On the tour, you can choose to trawl a shrimp net, sort the catch, pull your own crab pot, relax and fish (equipment provided), explore sandbars at low tide, or just sightsee or bird watch. (Note – Shrimp lovers should ask about their fantastic “Fill Your Freezer” tours. They don’t call it that for nothing! Come catch some big, fresh shrimp for you and your friends.)

Edisto Watersports (843-869-0663, www.edistowatersports.net) Edisto Watersports will make sure your chosen activity is fun! Owned by a Master Naturalist and Boat Captain who had the first charter boat at Edisto in 1990, they pride themselves on providing customers with high-quality fun and personal service. Conveniently located in the heart of Edisto Beach on Big Bay Creek, they provide nature tours, fishing charters, kayak trips, kayak rentals, and shelling excursions to a deserted island. In addition they have a wellstocked store with snacks, sodas, ice cold beer, bait, tackle supplies, hats, t-shirts, gifts, towels and ice, fishing rod rentals, and much more.

Fontaine Charters (843-303-7394, www.fontainecharters.com) There is nothing like being on the water in late afternoon and enjoying one of those spectacular Edisto Sunsets. This 2-hour excursion on St. Helena Sound and on many of its estuaries will acquaint you with a side of Edisto that is often overlooked. The U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain will share his lifetime of experience of growing up on the island and on the surrounding waters. Feel free to bring your own food & drinks. There is no better way to see dolphins, birds, and other wildlife that make the ACE Basin their home. Some of Edisto’s famous plantations can be seen from these waterways and thus offer you a glimpse into the rich history of the island. This is a tour that you will always treasure when you think of Edisto.

Island Bikes & Outfitters (843-869-4444, www.islandbikesandoutfitters.com) Island Bikes provides customized kayak tours of a private island. From this vantage point they can share with you a side of Edisto that is not often experienced. This is a great way to see dolphin, birds, and so much of the wildlife that make their home on Edisto. Don’t forget to contact them for the best selection of “beach supplies and stuff” to buy or rent on the island. From golf carts to paddles, they have it. If they don’t have it you probably don’t need it.

Walking... Addam’s Artifacts and Relic Hunting Adventures (www.addams-artifacts.com, 843-889-6073, 843-276-8338) After hunting Revolutionary and Civil War relics for over 20 years in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Addam’s Artifacts & Relic Hunting Adventures started in 2005. Through the business, they share their love of local history with the rest of the world. Contact them if you are interested in reserving a hunt or want any additional information. They can also share information on their Civil War Archaeology Detectives field trip program for schools, and their retail sales and purchases of Revolutionary War era, Civil War era, and Indian Wars era artifacts.

Botany Bay Ecotours (843-869-2998, www.botanybayplantation.com) With its origins managing the sea turtle project on Botany Bay Plantation since 1999, this tour brings lots of knowledge about the property recently opened to the public. This is the only ecotour on the island led by a local biologist. They lead a variety of tours that focus on the local environment and Edisto’s cultural history. You can explore the environment on foot or by kayak on their ecotours, turtle walks, or dolphin trips.
