• South Carolina Stingrays Hockey – With close to 40 home games a year, this organization is celebrating 16 years in the Lowcountry throughout the season, October ‘08 through April ‘09. www.stingrayshockey.com
The Hub of the Lowcountry North Charleston is the perfect place to have as a home base for your Lowcountry visit. The City has more than 4,000 affordable to luxury hotel rooms, a wide selection of restaurants, entertainment complexes, shopping malls and specialty shops, and is central to accessing area attractions. Tanger Outlet is its newest attraction with more than 90 brand name outlet stores, just minutes away from the Charleston International Airport, the busiest passenger airport in the state. Major Sports Events 2009 he following is a list of major sports events taking place in Charleston during 2009. These events not only showcase great athletic performances, but also provide spectators with a number of reasons to attend. Local sports developers recognize the huge economic value, media exposure and local entertainment enjoyment for the Charleston region.

32ND ANNUAL COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN 10K Road Race – Also includes a Fitness Expo, 10K Fitness Walk and Kids’ Fun Run Event Organizers: Mr. Julian Smith and Cooper River Bridge Run Committee Location: Mt. Pleasant, Arthur Ravenel Bridge and Historic Charleston, S.C. The viewing area encompasses a 6.2 mile course, with a start line in Mt. Pleasant and finish line at Marion Square, historic Charleston. The event is one of the world’s largest 10,000 meter runs, sanctioned by USA Track and Field, and has had many notable runners in the past.

Cooper River Bridge Run’s CLAIM to FAME: • Elite United States national runner Benji Durden, whose opportunity to make the Olympic team was denied by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, won the first run. • 1972 Olympic Marathon champion Frank Shorter competed in the 1983 Bridge Run. • In 1989, world-renowned Norwegian marathoner Grete Waitz, 2nd in the inaugural Olympic marathon and former NYC winner, won the women’s division. • The 1994 Bridge Run gained fame for a runner who ran under a pseudonym. TV personality Oprah Winfrey finished 3,839th with a time of 55:48. • Actor Bill Murray fired the cannon for the 1997 Bridge Run and then ran the event. • Kenyan Olympic runner Catherine Ndereba, second in the 2004 Marathon in Athens, won 3 consecutive years, 2000-2002.

Clermont-Auverge Men’s Professional Rugby vs. USA Rugby Team (August 2008) USA Rugby and Greenvillebased, Michelin NA brought the first-ever professional rugby match to the state of SC in 2008. On Saturday, August 9, Blackbaud Stadium was host to over 4,000 fans to watch the U.S. Men’s National Team against the French rugby union club from ClermontFerrand France, the Clermont Auvergne Rugby team. It was nationally broadcast live on ESPN Classic and was a huge success for all event organizers. www.usarugby.org
GOLF The 68th Senior PGA Championship (2007) – Denis Watson won his first golf tournament in 23 years, beating Eduardo Romero by two strokes. – This event brought in more than $23 million through direct spending by non-resident spectators and expenditures by The PGA of America. It received 14 hours of live television coverage over four days – six hours on USA and eight hours on NBC. Extensive exposure served to further position South Carolina as the southeast’s premiere golf destination.

GOLF 2005 PGA Club Professional Championship – Mike Small, the golf coach at the University of Illinois, won the event with a score of 289. 2003 World Cup November 11-16 The South African team of Rory Sabbatini and Trevor Immelman finished four strokes ahead of England and captured the 2003 title on The Ocean Course.
Inaugural UBS Warburg Cup – November 15-18, 2001 – The U.S. team, led by Arnold Palmer, escaped with a thrilling 12.5-11.5 victory over the “Rest of the World” team (led by Gary Player) in a Ryder Cup-style format.
1997 World Cup – November 18-23 – Team Ireland, consisting of Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley, took home the World Cup hosted by The Ocean Course. Colin Montgomerie claimed the individual honors.

Consistently attracting more than 135 boats ranging in size from 20-50 feet, the event has made its mark on the national sailing scene. The captains and their crews’ hail from more than 21 states. They are serious racers who travel to other key locals for the best racing and most hospitable regattas in the nation. The Charleston Ocean Racing Association coordinates massive efforts on the water with three different race courses and more than 130 volunteers on the water handling the logistics of a professional regatta. Race officials and judges travel to Charleston to participate. Major sponsors also play a key role in making this event a success, and companies such as Vineyard Vines, Gosling’s Rum, Gill North America and West Marine travel from their home bases with executives and clients to attend.

This 777mile blue-water adventure has always placed a decided emphasis on fun and the bulk of the fleet often reflects that outlook. The cruiser-racers, many of them equipped with amenities that range from air-conditioning to ice makers, have ranged in size from a mere 30 feet to 70 feet. The 2009 edition will change a bit as the race introduces a classic division with the state’s very own tall ship, The Spirit of South Carolina, participating with a length overall of 140 feet and interest from at least one other tall ship. An event that is always welcoming to new-comers to the sport, there are

These majestic ships with their traditional rigging and classic lines make for quite the visual as they converge in the harbor. In addition to the competition on the water, this event brings with it a huge cultural exchange between nations and some of the world’s most famous ships. The competition continues on land as part of Harbor Fest includes pitting the crew of each ship against each other in a variety of games such as soccer, tug-o-war, and more. The 2008 Charleston Classic was the first event to take place in the new Carolina First Arena on the campus of the College of Charleston. Four games were broadcasted on CSS and two on CSN in Philadelphia. Clemson University captured the championships with a win against Temple University and a 3-0 tournament record. DID YOU KNOW? LOCAL COLLEGIATE TRIVIA In 1897, The College of Charleston had its first meeting of the athletic association, which included school-sponsored football, basketball and baseball teams. In 1905, The Citadel played its first intercollegiate football game (Citadel 0, Porter Military Academy 0). In 1921, The Southern Conference was organized and is the nation’s fourth oldest collegiate athletic association. In 1936, The Citadel joined the Southern Conference, and today is the oldest member.

In 1983, The Big South Conference was cofounded by Mr. Howard Bagwell, the Athletic Director for CSU (1965-2000). Bagwell led, then Baptist College, from an NAIA school to Division I status. In 2007, The Citadel celebrated its 100th Football Season. (The Bulldogs have fielded a football team every year except during the World War II years.) In 2008, the Southern Conference celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Women’s Collegiate Championships. In 2008/09, Samford University joins the Southern Conference as a 12th member-institution with 13 student-athlete varsity programs.
