from the president

Dear Friends, This fall marked the beginning of the University’s 46th year. We are grateful for the many positive happenings on campus. The university continues to expand in all areas. We experienced a three percent increase in full-time enrollment this fall, and our residence halls are at capacity. Orientation this year was highlighted by the three-day Love Awakening Festival. The Festival provided students with a chance to learn more about service opportunities. Eleven students made decisions for Christ at the end of the Festival. More about this exciting event is available on page 8, and video testimonies are available online at http://www.youtube.com/user/CharlestonSouthern. Students were greeted with physical changes on campus with the renovation of Women’s South residential hall and the addition of brick pavers around the Reflection Pond. Information about purchasing engraving on a brick is included in this issue. The University has established an integrated marketing plan, and a dynamic aspect of this program is a billboard on Interstate 26 that flashes live updates from our football games. You can read more about these exciting updates inside. This issue also highlights mission work our students have done in Guatemala; Amanda Hobson and her work with inner-city children in Harlem; Exchange Club Man of the Year John Kammeyer; a reunion of the 1971-74 baseball team, and much more. Thank you for your continued support of Charleston Southern. We are pleased to include our annual list of donors in this issue.

Sincerely,

Jairy C. Hunter, Jr.

Lancaster named to national Good Works Team Most of the time, you only hear the name of an offensive lineman when they miss a block or give up a sack. For a unit that has to be cohesive to be effective, it is often difficult to pick out the best. Senior Jordan Lancaster has managed to earn plenty of recognition. The Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., native has made 27 starts and played in 33 games during his career, the most among the returning offensive linemen. He also earned 2010 Preseason All-Big South honors entering his senior season. Despite helping last year’s offensive line finish tied for sixth in the nation in sacks allowed and earning 2009 most improved offensive lineman honors from the coaches, perhaps Lancaster’s biggest impact is made off the field. Lancaster made history by becoming one of only two Big South athletes to ever be named to the preseason nomination list, and has now become the first in Big South history to earn a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He is one of 22 student-athletes to earn a spot on the list that includes all four-year institutions and more than 50,000 student-athletes. On campus, Lancaster leads a male Bible study group for fellow athletes, and is a six-time CSU scholar-athlete and was the winner of the CSU Football Total Athlete Award. He has volunteered at the Closing the Gap in Healthcare seminar in each of the last four years, helping encourage an active lifestyle for underprivileged kids in the Charleston area. The CSU campus is not the only place Lancaster’s impact is felt; he also tutors elementary school children and volunteers for a youth softball team. Somehow he still finds time to work as a youth pastor intern and help in the media department and children’s church at his home church. The idea of servant leadership is deeply rooted in the Bible, and that is not something that is lost on Lancaster. “First and foremost I just try to honor God and put Him first in all that I do,” said Lancaster. “I always try to help others out whenever I can.”

His coaches have not overlooked his work either, with Head Coach Jay Mills giving high praise to Lancaster for the way he honors God in all things. “What a blessing Jordan is to this team,” said Mills. “Jordan has gone through his share of adversity and actually got hurt just before the team’s trip to Hawaii in 2007 and was not able

to go. Our second trip was originally scheduled for next year, but it just so happened that it got changed so he’s going to have the opportunity to go this year. That is a great example of delayed gratification, and God honoring a man who honors Him as scripture talks about. Jordan has certainly honored God by talking to his teammates and presenting the truth in love. He is the example of a great leader on and off the field. If you are looking for a true renaissance man who is well balanced physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, I think Jordan would be our poster individual for Charleston Southern football.” It takes a lot of humility to sacrifice time and effort for others, and when asked about his honors, Lancaster’s humility shines through. “I know there are a lot of people out there who are doing a lot more than I am,” he said. “My praise goes out to all of those people who may not be getting recognized for everything that they are doing.”

People who travel on I-26 on home football game days and can’t make it to campus can stay connected to the game, simply by checking the side of the road. As part of the school’s marketing initiative, CSU has signed on with Adams Outdoor Advertising, purchasing ads on the agency’s digital billboards. In addition to general ads promoting the school, the rotation also includes advertisements for the CSU Bucs entire 2010 college football season. During home games the billboard switchs to feature live, in-game updates. “Through Twitter, and social media in general, we’ve been able to extend our marketing and branding to reach students, alumni and new Buccaneer fans,” said John Strubel, director of integrated marketing. “This is a new marketing twist. With the help from Adams Outdoor, we’ve been able to creatively marry our advertising and social media marketing efforts to connect students, alumni and the Lowcountry with their hometown team.” The live update is a new feature with the digital billboards, and according to Adams Outdoor Advertising, the Buccaneers are the first group in the Lowcountry to utilize the technology. “Adams is excited to partner with CSU on this campaign using social media,” said Scott Furcolow, general manager of Adams Outdoor Advertising. “The emergence of digital technology for outdoor advertising is creating a number of new approaches for our clients to resonate with their audience. Using platforms like Twitter, and allowing the community to interact and be part of the message, is a very enticing prospect to keep messages fresh and relevant.” For complete sports coverage of CSU athletics, follow Twitter @CSUSports.

Beckham returned to CSU and applied with East West. Then just days before graduation, Beckham received the news that she had been accepted into the program. “It was the best graduation present I would receive,” she said. “I’m really excited. It’s a fun place to be when you’re doing what God has called you to do.” In an e-mail to Dr. Jairy C. Hunter she thanked the president and the University writing: “For the last four years CSU has been a huge part of my life. CSU not only gave me an amazing education but it helped me grow in my walk with the Lord. I left CSU loving our God more than when I entered CSU. For that I am eternally grateful. CSU equipped me spiritually as well as academically to enter into a thriving world.” Beckham will be teaching Asian college students, mostly between the ages of 18 and 21, to speak English. “How am I going to teach kids English with a Southern accent?” Beckham laughed. She coordinated a small group of CSU students, mostly education majors, who offered advice on teaching the students through interaction. East-West Ministries International also provided a weeklong training program to discuss cultural differences. Beckham will learn the language through courses at the university where she is teaching. After listening to Spratt’s testimony and invitation to apply, Beckham began praying about the opportunity. She said her heart was always pulling her toward missions. She began feeling that tug again but wanted to be sure this was God’s will, not her own.

SAVED for a

Greater Purpose Barely pausing to take a breath, freshman Kassandra Gonzalez talks excitedly about attending Charleston Southern - dorm life, meeting new people, the college experience, independence. “I have big hopes for my future. I’ve set goals for myself - I want to be a neonatal surgeon,” she declares confidently. Kassandra’s self-assurance is fueled by 19 years of overcoming multiple health issues along with the strength and support of a strong, loving family. “We were all so excited about having a baby sister,” recalls Barbara, who is 14 years older than Kassandra and admits she is more like a second mother than a sister. “I worked at a flea market, and when I finished working I would spend all my money on baby gifts for my unborn sister.” But the months of anticipation turned tragic when Kassandra was born with a congenital heart defect requiring surgery. The doctors offered little hope for her survival and told her mother that if she did survive, she would not be “a normal child.” “My mother did not accept that,” Kassandra said. “She knew God

had other plans for me. I am where I am today because of her and her faith in God.” Barbara recalls the first time she saw Kassandra after the operation. “One memory I will always have is seeing my baby sister after her surgery – this little, itty, bitty body just covered up with cables and monitors and machines. It was difficult to even see her; it was very traumatic.” During the weeks that followed, Mrs. Gonzalez never left the hospital. She slept in the waiting room or the lobby, wherever she could find a place. Nineteen years have passed since that time. During those years Mrs. Gonzalez advocated, almost on a daily basis, for her youngest daughter, fighting for surgeries and the things she needed. “Everyone has to learn to cope with who they are at some point in time. That time for me was a long time ago,” Kassandra says as she recalls her eye surgery and 14 years of occupational, speech and physical therapy. She revisits the emotional scars from her parents’ divorce and her peers’ painful taunts about her physical disabilities. She struggled academically due to her school absences caused by health issues. Then the

summer before her senior year they moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. She managed to stay focused on the future by applying to several colleges but became discouraged when they suggested she attend community college first. When she received her acceptance to Charleston Southern, with the stipulation of participating in the Bridge Program, she was ecstatic. “I didn’t choose Charleston Southern; Charleston Southern chose me,” she said. “When we went to visit the school, it was such a beautiful place. It just felt like that was where I was meant to be.” There are still obstacles, some known, others unknown. When asked what her biggest obstacle will be at CSU, she answers without hesitation, “Math!” Besides her academic concerns, Kassandra also faces ear surgery and years down the road she will also need to have major leg surgery. And then there are the very real financial concerns. But her enthusiasm will not be doused. “College is a journey, and I want to be in full gear and do my best,” she said, “because God gave me the opportunity to be saved for a greater purpose.”

THE LOVE AWAKENING THEME -- INSPIRED BY 1 JOHN 4:19: “WE LOVE HIM, BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US” – IS CONTINUING THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER DURING CAMPUS MINISTRY EVENTS, BIBLE STUDIES AND OTHER LIVE EVENTS ON CAMPUS.

LOVE AWAKENING, A THREE-NIGHT WORSHIP FESTIVAL, KICKED OFF THE FALL SEMESTER.

by John Strubel photos by Tam Odom and John Strubel

The festival focused on the Author of Love, The Object of Love and The Expression of Love. The event featured live music, multimedia presentations and interactive worship. “To understand what it means to love and be loved,” said campus pastor Clark Carter, “we are going to come together to ask God to quicken our hearts, to awaken us and make us alive in Him.”

GO CENTER CONNECTS STUDENTS TO MINISTRIES Students poured into the Go Center following Tuesday’s program. For some it marked the end of the three-day festival, but for most it was the beginning of a new exploration into CSU’s service and mission opportunities. One dozen local service organizations spread out across the room, handing out literature, sharing opportunities and trading information with students. Beth Horne, a

freshman biology major from Dillon, South Carolina, leaned in and listened as Habitat for Humanity shared the story of Cassandra Brown and her family. As the photos, handwritten letters and words passed across the table, Horne nodded with certainty as if to say, “Count me in.” She grabbed a pen and signed up to help build a family a home – a family she’s never met. “I’ve done service in the community, but this is so much more,” Horne said later. “The (Love Awakening) Festival has helped open the doors to new students like me.”

Habitat for Humanity, Compassion International, Water Missions International, Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Convoy of Hope, Miracle League, Hope House, Celebration Station, In Every Story, Eagle Harbor Boys Ranch, Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee and Run for Freedom helped connect freshmen and new students with service opportunities. “They’re freshmen, leaving their homes for the first time, and their first experiences on campus are with people who have hearts that are ready and willing to serve; people that are changed by His light,” said Koryn VanDyke, a junior. “Students are able to come and connect and discover a passion to serve. This is how the freshman class is being united under the banner of Jesus Christ. It’s setting a tone, and I’m excited for the freshman class.” Charleston native Kelly Heaton listened to VanDyke speak about service and said, “Seeing the campus ministry gets you really excited. There is an opportunity here to get connected really fast.” Heaton, a junior nursing major, served as a camp counselor at a youth mission camp in Tennessee during the summer. On Tuesday, Heaton signed up to serve at

Festival continues with L - O - V - E at Elevate Pride. Lust. Fear. Selfishness. Sin is a powerful force that breaks hearts, builds barriers and separates us from God’s love. “What is it in your life that is keeping you from experiencing this amazing love to its fullest?” Campus Minister Clark Carter asked students during Elevate, the student weekly worship service. Students responded by stepping forward and writing their sins on six-foot-tall letters that spelled L - O - V - E. Up and down the curves of the letters students poured out their hearts to God. “Not devoting time for God in my life. Not making Him the LOVE of my life. Wanting control,” read one message. Another student wrote, “Too concerned about pleasing others, rather than pleasing God.” “Myself and my selfish desires,” said another. “The fear of letting go of my own desires and not being in control of His plan for me,” was etched in green ink across another wood plank. Students prayed and worshiped. The evening came and went, but the messages lingered behind. “We told them to look for these letters around campus and they would be reminded of the power of love,” said Carter. There’s only one difference: the sins are gone. “We painted the letters red, covering the things that they wrote down that were keeping them from experiencing the fullness of God’s love,” said Carter. “We hope that by having a symbolic reminder that Christ’s blood covers many emotions, mistakes and fears that students will begin to live a life pleasing to Him by extending that love to their neighbors,” said Tam Odom, director of women’s ministry and creative arts. “This is a powerful symbol of what the love of God does for us...it ‘covers a multitude of sins’ and is a living reminder that ‘He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it!’ (Phil. 1:6) When they see the letters on campus, I want them to be grateful, thankful, and free to serve God extravagantly because of what He has done for them!”

hen I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” -- Isaiah 6:8 Slide after slide, images on a PowerPoint presentation flashed across the screen; reflections of life in Guatemala, some fun and others simply heartbreaking. Five years after Hurricane Stan leveled Guatemala with 40-foot-high mudslides, burying homes and lives, where more than 1,500 people perished, where survivors still live in poverty, a dozen CSU faculty, staff and students stepped off a plane on a mission: to share the love of Christ. “You see this stuff on TV, but when you drive the bus on to this land and see people living this way, we had to overcome that,” said senior Amanda Kizzee. “We had to get past the tears and the effect it had on us in order to reach in and serve them.” Kizzee was one of 10 students on the spring mission trip to Guatemala. The 10-day journey to Guatemala began with anxiety for the team members, unaware of what they’d see, who they’d encounter or how to communicate. “I had no idea what to expect,” said senior Ryan Hill. “I was really anxious because I don’t speak Spanish. I know how to say ‘Hello’ and ‘Where’s your bathroom?’ I was so frustrated because I couldn’t just talk to these people.” That’s until he met Harla, a deaf Guatemalan child. “Language wasn’t an issue,” said Hill. “We talked completely through body language. That was the coolest thing that God showed me on this trip. She and I had an incredible bond by the third day. It was heartbreaking to leave her.” Student Michelle Hendrickson spent her final day in Xela kicking and throwing a beach ball with a five-year-old boy. For nearly 40 minutes the two never spoke a word, communicating only through body language. The group visited a number of Mayan villages, painting, teaching, playing with children and worshiping with the local people. The students visited Santiago and taught at a small school

Dr. and Mrs. Tim Spurling 1 John 3:2 “But we know that when he appears,[a ]we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” One day we will be like him - if this is true we are works in progress on our way to being a masterpiece. If the work is progressing, it stands to reason that we should see something of beauty emerging from our lives; we should see that change happening. We should look different than we did 10 years ago, look more like him, act more like him and sound more like him. That’s what I see in my wife, Susan, whom I love. The Presidential Council and our yearly mission trips to Romania (We have just completed our 13th mission trip to Romania.) are two ways we have seen the change in our lives. The trips to Romania are reaching out to those that the world has neglected and abused and rejected. The love for them is God’s doing, without Christ in our lives these changes would never have taken place. We are proud of our family: our oldest daughter, Alicia Streett, owns and runs an equestrian center in Florence; Charlie, her husband, runs a fabrication company; their two children, Alex and Kirsten, attend Kings Academy in Florence; our second daughter, Amanda Spurling, graduated from Anderson University and works in the financial aid office of Mcleod Regional Medical Center; our third daughter, Ashley Taylor, graduated from Charleston Southern University and is presently serving in China; our youngest, Zachary Taylor, is a freshman at Columbia International University. A son, TJ, was lost in a car accident at 16, but we know that he is in heaven. The Lord has blessed us in too many ways to count. We are blessed with many patients and friends, the by-product of practicing medicine in one place for 25 years.

Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union With more than 200 employees and a memberfocused philosophy, Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union continues to be a perfect alternative to banks in the Lowcountry. What sets Heritage Trust apart from the competitors is its consistent, longterm commitment to both its 50,000 members as well as employees. Heritage Trust is a financially sound organization that has successfully served the greater Charleston community since 1955 and is the only financial institution in the Charleston area that has purchased additional, private share insurance coverage on top of the federal amount. This means Heritage Trust’s member accounts are protected up to $500,000. IRAs are also covered up to $500,000. By concentrating on the needs and best interests of its members, Heritage Trust has been able to maintain growth and stability even in the midst of economic downturn. “Heritage Trust’s growth and success can be attributed to our member’s loyalty over the years, embracing change to provide our members with the best technology and products and services available, hiring great employees and consistently serving and supporting our local community,” said President and CEO James McDaniel Sr. Convenience: • 12 branch locations and more than 36 ATMS throughout the region. • The credit union’s Website, www.HeritageTrust.org is available for members 24/7to apply for loans, pay bills, view account balances or sign up to receive e-statements. • Members can also sign up for Mobile Banking for access via their cell phones. • As a participant in the Shared Branching network, Heritage Trust members who are traveling or relocating can access the services of almost 3,000 credit unions worldwide. Service: • The credit union’s highly skilled and dedicated professionals are available to assist members every day. • Staff are trained to answer member questions and provide easy access and assistance to product information, loan processing, account information and more. Trust: • Since Heritage Trust’s members are its owners, members actively participate in the organization’s future by electing the credit union’s Board of Directors. • Founded on the philosophy of “people helping people,” credit unions exist only to serve members.

Proud to contribute to the academic environment of Charleston Southern University as a Presidential Level donor, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company appreciates the support shown to our company by CSU alumni, students and faculty through the years. With two stores less than four miles from the CSU campus, and more than 100 stores located in communities throughout South Carolina and southeastern Georgia, Piggly Wiggly will continue to serve the needs of proud Buccaneers where they work and live. The Piggly Wiggly executive leadership team includes proud CSU alum and Chief Financial Officer Bill Edenfield, along with Vice President of Finance, Sandra Rabon, who serves on the CSU Board of Visitors Presidential Council. It is our hope that Piggly Wiggly’s financial support will enable CSU to continue to educate students and prepare them to perform leadership roles similar to those of Bill and Sandra.

Kammeyer Awarded Man of the Year by Sherry Atkinson

J

ohn Kammeyer learned early on that life delivers some hard knocks. When he was 29, his father died of cancer. The following year his wife was diagnosed with cancer, and five years later she faced cancer again, beating the disease both times. “I grew up fast during that time,” he said. That’s when I realized how short life really is and how you have to live every minute … and that’s what we are doing.” Kammeyer describes himself as a proactive person. He makes things happen. During his years at Charleston Southern his leadership was evident, especially on the basketball court. As captain of the team his junior and senior years, he set a record for assists, and in 1991 was inducted into the Hall of Fame for basketball and baseball. Kammeyer has not forgotten his alma mater. He has been generous in his support of the athletic program and still attends games to cheer on the Bucs. Shortly after graduating in 1974 Kammeyer went to work at Rug Masters, Inc. He learned all aspects of the job from the ground up and is now president of the company. In 2006 Rug Masters was awarded Oriental Rug Retailer of the Year, the number one retailer in the U.S. “To be successful in business, you’ve got to make it happen,” said Kammeyer. “We have worked very hard at the business.” Kammeyer currently works 75-85 hours a week, and that’s after cutting back.

For the past 23 years he has also been an active member of the Charleston Exchange Club, a volunteer, national service organization. There are about 1,000 Exchange Clubs in the U.S. of which the Charleston Exchange Club is the largest with 270 members. Among other endeavors, the Club sponsors the Coastal Carolina Fair in Ladson, a huge undertaking. According to Kammeyer, who has organized the manpower for the last few years, there is no outsourcing. Everything is done by Charleston Exchange Club members. Kammeyer readily admits that working on the fair is a yearlong function. When asked about the number of hours spent in planning, phone calls, meetings and the like, he shakes his head, “I don’t know how you can calculate it. It’s always on my mind.” Last October the fair’s 10-day run, with approximately 250,000 people passing through the gates, yielded over a quarter of a million dollars which was donated by the Club to charitable causes; and that was during an economic downturn. “The Exchange Club gives back to the community. We really focus on this area, primarily on the Tricounty,” said Kammeyer. At the Exchange Club’s inauguration banquet in June, Kammeyer was presented the Man of the Year Award.

Receiving the award is the highest honor, one that prompts a standing ovation even as the name is being called. It recognizes the member for his hard work, increasing member involvement and recruiting new members; he is the member who has made the biggest impact on the Club. And it is quite an honor knowing fellow members choose the winner. “People who do well in the Exchange Club also do well in life; it carries over,” Kammeyer added. “They’re active in their church, in the community, maybe coaching Little League. It’s about being a good citizen.”

“People who do well in the Exchange Club also do well in life; it carries over. They’re active in their church, in the community, maybe coaching Little League. It’s about being a good citizen.” — John Kammeyer

A Home Built on Solid Ground by Sherry Atkinson Members of the One Accord gospel choir work at the CSU Habitat home.

harleston Southern and Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County have joined forces to build a home in Moncks Corner. A large circle of more than 50 people weathered the heat to attend the groundbreaking in August. The Habitat partner family, Cassandra Brown and her two daughters, are currently living in unsafe and substandard conditions. The family has been working on another Habitat home, building up their sweat equity; they are excited their house is the next to be built. Brown addressed the group: “I truly appreciate you giving up your time and energy for someone you don’t know personally, especially you college students; I know you have a work load…I thank you, I thank you, I thank you.” “This is a great opportunity for faculty, staff, students and alumni to work side by side,” said David Baggs, vice president for advancement. Campus Ministries is organizing student groups

to work with the goal for completion the day before Thanksgiving. Faculty, staff and alumni are also involved in the project. Charleston Southern has been involved with many Habitat projects over the years. This project is the second time the University has been the sole partner with Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County to build a home. The first was in 2003. Moncks Corner resident Johnny Ward and his family have worked with Habitat for some time and have been very generous. “It’s just a very good cause,” Ward said. “The Lord’s been good to us, and we just try to help people along the way. You’ve just got to do your part to try to help this world be a better place. These students who are a part of it, they’ll see the miracle happen.” Ward is on the CSU Board of Trustees

and donated the lot and provided funding for this house. “At Charleston Southern we value integrating our faith,” said Dr. Rick Brewer, vice president for student affairs and athletics. “Being part of this project will be a transformational experience for us, because we will be changed in the process.”

harleston Southern has been selected as the Volunteer Reception Center site (VRC) for the Tricounty. The new VRC serves as the initial point of contact for individuals and groups in our community who wish to help with organizations providing assistance during a disaster. Trident United Way, in conjunction with Charleston County Emergency Preparedness Department, will coordinate the activation and management of the center with the support of more than 150 volunteer staff members.

38 CSU magazine CSU vol.20 no.3 NEW GLOSS PAGES.38 38

“We know the stories of the ‘disaster within the disaster’ – when there is no plan to manage spontaneous, unaffiliated volunteers who arrive at the scene of disaster; they become part of the problem instead of sources of help,” said Sally Burnett, Trident United Way’s volunteer coordinator. “The VRC provides that plan.” Organizers conducted a disaster volunteer drill at the Brewer Center on the campus during the summer. During the drill, VRC volunteer staff worked through the process of register-

ing volunteers, providing safety training and assigning appropriate jobs related to their skills and experience. Charleston County Emergency Management Department staff members assisted in the drill, along with representatives from several other agencies. In the event of a communitywide emergency, the VRC will open to coordinate volunteer disaster relief workers.

CSU named Military Friendly School By sherry atkinson

G

.I. Jobs magazine has named CSU a Military Friendly School for 2011. This is the second consecutive year the University has received this award. According to G.I. Jobs, criteria for the title includes a school’s VA-approval of GI Bill benefits, CLEP acceptance, credit for military service, Reserve and Guard policies, access to flexible learning options, veteran programs, military spouse programs, among others. “You should take great pride in this honor,” writes Rich McCormack, publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. “This honor ranks CSU in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide. Clearly you have an interest in recruiting military students.”

Charleston Southern has a full-time VA Certifying Official and has been diligent in serving the military community, veterans and their families for more than 40 years. Debbie Williamson, vice president for enrollment management, states that CSU’s online programs such as the bachelor of management arts, master of business administration, master of science in criminal justice and master of science in nursing are popular among veterans. “Charleston Southern University has earned a strong reputation among the military community for the support we have provided to service members, veterans and their families,” said Williamson

SU is participating in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program for the 2010-2011 academic year. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs Website, “The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. If you are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution, and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public instate undergraduate tuition or fees, additional funds may be available for your education program without an additional charge to your entitlement.” Raynelle Odom, military services coordinator, said, “To participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program at CSU, a veteran must receive Chapter 33 VA Educational Benefits at the 100 percent

rate.” Under Charleston Southern’s program, the VA pays half of the veteran’s tuition, and Charleston Southern will pick up the other half. Other Yellow Ribbon Program benefits at Charleston Southern: • Veteran will receive $1,290 housing allowance per month • Book and supply stipend up to a maximum of $1,000 • Veteran may give his/her Chapter 33 VA Educational Benefits to a spouse or children To take advantage of the Yellow Ribbon Program benefits at Charleston Southern, veterans need to apply to CSU and fill out financial aid forms. Once a veteran begins the application process, he or she should contact Odom, CSU’s VA Certifying Official.

Hobson + Harvard = Harlem by John Strubel

manda Hobson knew she wanted to teach when she was a senior at Fort Dorchester High School in Summerville, but it wasn’t until her sophomore year at CSU that she discovered why and where her passion would lead her. “I went on a mission trip to Ghana, and it changed my life,” confessed Hobson. “Seeing the poverty there woke me up to the poverty in the United States and what children are dealing with. That inspired me and drove me for the next couple of years at CSU.” The college education and life experience Hobson enjoyed in and out of the classroom at Charleston Southern shaped her life. In class, instructors tested her knowledge; a world away, serving in Ghana, the Lord tested her faith and developed her passion for childhood education. After graduating with a degree in childhood education in 2008, Hobson spent two years teaching elementary school in Knightsville and Summerville. The experience was another eye-opening lesson on poverty. “I had students who lived in poverty, and I had students who were wealthy,” she remembers. “To see the difference in what they came to school knowing, as well as their childhood and what they were experiencing, it really impressed upon my heart. I wanted to be part of giving children a better childhood, especially when it was beyond their control.” During her first year of teaching, Hobson began researching graduate schools. The top three were the Teachers College (at Columbia University) in New York, Stanford and Harvard, the latter offering a graduate education program in risk and prevention, a “perfect” next step. She idled until Christmas 2008. The holiday vacation created time and space for her to again think about her future. “The day before I went back to school (as a teacher), I saw that the application was due the next day,” she said. After drafting a list of all the programs she liked, Hobson said, “I went back to the risk and prevention program and thought, ‘I want this one.’” She telephoned Harvard and asked the program director for an extension, hoping to get

It was midnight. I was about to go to bed. So I checked one more time and there was a letter. All I read was congratulations. I was shocked.” Hobson said she began to cry. With tears of joy rolling down her cheeks she called home, forgetting it was midnight. “I started calling everybody and woke them up,” she said. “I called my roommate right away. I called my mom and dad and woke them up.” Last August Hobson and her father packed up a U-Haul and headed for Massachusetts. “I went on a mission trip to Destination: Harvard. SPEAKERS INSPIRE

new students at chapel by John strubel

T

he first Chapel program of the year featured three inspiring speeches from current students and graduates. Trinidad native Dr. Kirt Caton, a 1993 alumnus, came to the United States on a soccer scholarship and challenged students to “keep your faith in God and believe that with God anything is possible.” Caton, now a Palmetto Primary Care Physician in Hanahan, said Charleston Southern inspired him, “gave me a thirst for knowledge and helped me succeed.”

Angela Walker, a 2004 graduate, shared her testimony saying, “CSU not only provided me with a wonderful education in music but it also gave me a strong and firm foundation in my faith that is very much needed in my chosen profession.” Walker has spent the last three years singing and acting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She has released two CDs of her music performances and told the CSU audience, “Since I was a little girl I have had the desire in my heart to share God’s love, my love of music and my faith through song.”

Matt Waggy followed Caton and Walker saying, “I’m not a doctor and I don’t have a song to sing, but I do have a few stories I’d like to share with you.” Waggy is a criminal justice major and a cadet in the Air Force ROTC program. He has served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and is the 26-year-old father of twin boys. He shared three inspirational stories of his experiences at war.

Paying It Forward

Barrier and Best Scholarship Announced by Sherry Atkinson

L

egacy Society members were special guests invited to the first Chapel event of the fall semester. Afterwards, the group met in the Charleston Room for lunch and to catch up with friends. Director of Corporate Relations and Planned Giving Lili Gresham says there are currently more than 50 Legacy Society members. “Joining the CSU Legacy Society is a way to pass on your values and beliefs for generations to come,” said Gresham, who recently joined the Society. “Anyone can join regardless of age,” she explained. Her suggestion – when you draft your first will, start thinking charitably about what you would like to do.

At this year’s luncheon another legacy was celebrated – the legacy of influence left on students by biology professors Dr. Jim Barrier and Mr. Steve Best who retired this year. Between them, the pair taught 77 years at the University and mentored scores of students. Laughter rose throughout the room as former students, most of whom graduated about 35 years ago, reminisced about the past as if it was yesterday. Story after story was told, most of them about fishing and golf with some biology thrown in. But in the end, the heart of the stories boiled down to two professors who cared about and enjoyed their students and loved what they did.

Friends and alumni are joining together to honor these two respected and revered faculty members by establishing an endowed scholarship in biology in their honor. For more information about The Barrier and Best Endowed Scholarship, contact Bill Ward at 843-863-7514 or e-mail wward@csuniv.edu. To contribute toward this scholarship, go to https://portal.csuniv.edu/ics/Giving/ or use the enclosed envelope. For more information about the Legacy Society, contact Lili Gresham at 843-863-7517 or e-mail lgresham@csuniv.edu.
