Where a wilderness battle changed a nation forever! Kings Mountain National Military Park I-85/Exit 102, 2625 Park Road, Blacksburg, SC 864.936.7921 • www.nps.gov/kimo In a special visit to York County on October 7, 1930, U.S. President Herbert Hoover declared the battlefield at Kings Mountain to be “a place of inspiring memories.â€? It is the place that changed the course of history for South Carolina and the United States. The Chronicle Marker at Kings Mountain National Military Park is the second oldest battlefield monument (1815) in the United States. The park preserves the entire battlefield site in a natural setting evocative of the Carolina frontier of 1780, which commemorates one of the most important Patriot victories of the American Revolution and the first major Patriot victory of the Southern Campaign. The park includes a one and a half mile battlefield trail that is a walking-only trail, a film presentation, an exhibit area with battlefield artifacts, a gift shop and bookstore, and a hiking trail. There is a backcountry campsite approximately three miles from the park office, and horse trails are also available for visitors who bring their own horses.

The park has two lakes and several streams for fishing and almost 35 miles of hiking and equestrian trails. Camps Cherokee and York provide for large groups and feature rustic cabins, a dining hall and bathhouses. A 15-site campground is designated for equestrian users. Pets must be on a leash or other physical restraint at all times. An admission fee applies to day visitors age 16 and older.

Learn how people farmed the land, cooked their food and entertained themselves in the 1800s at Historic Brattonsville, a 775-acre Revolutionary War living history site. More than 30 historic structures chronicle the Carolina Piedmont from the 1750s-1840s. Historical farming techniques and day-to-day activities are presented by costumed interpreters year-round. Rare breeds of farm animals such as Gulf Coast sheep, Devon cattle and Ossabaw Island hogs are cared for here, just as they were hundreds of years ago. Historic Brattonsville is one of the few sites offering African-American historic interpretation.

Trails include the River Trail along the Catawba River and the Wetlands Trail – both are handicapped accessible. The Waterford Trail connects River Park to the nearby Waterford Business Park. River Park is the perfect setting to learn about the delicate balance between man and his natural resources. Open daily 8am – 6pm October to February and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. March to September.

Facilities include the Winthrop Coliseum, as well as baseball, softball, tennis, soccer and track complexes, an outdoor education center, a protected Piedmont wetlands, and several recreational fields. A challenging 18-hole disc golf course has been the site of the U.S. and World Disc Golf championships. A driving range where visitors may hit and retrieve their own golf balls is located near the Winthrop Ballpark. The one-mile loop around the lake is one of approximately five miles of walking and bike trails that criss-cross the complex and conveniently connect to Rock Hill’s public trails.

This 68-acre facility includes a playground, picnic tables and grills, a large covered picnic shelter, an enclosed shelter for informal gatherings, and a 1.5 mile lighted, secured walking, biking and jogging trail. Admission is free. Fees are charged to attend weekend softball tournaments. Gracing the entrance to the softball/baseball fields is a 14-foot bronze sculpture modeled after the legendary ballplayer, Mighty Casey.

1375 Springlake Rd, York PH: 803.684.4898 This course is primarily flat, but there is an occasional hill that can cause uneven lies. The greens are large, and the fairways are narrow. The signature hole is #9, a 351-yard, par 4, requiring an approach shot over water to the green.

The second nine, designed by George Cobb, was opened 12 years later. A complete renovation of the course was completed in the summer of 2008 under the direction of Clyde Johnston. The greens were converted to one of the heat tolerant ultradwarf bermudas, MiniVerdi. The course features a driving range, snack bar, and a well-stocked pro shop.

The Clyde Johnston designed course harkens back to the traditional schemes of the 1920s and the Golden Age of Architecture in golf. Its 6.906 yards are located on a heavily wooded, hilly site, with four holes flanking Sugar Creek – affording spectacular views – and 13 holes playing across and along perennial streams that feed the Catawba River.

Windy Hill Orchard and Cider Mill is a cozy five-acre orchard complete with the apple-cider press, bakery, Johnny Appleseed’s barnyard buddies, sunflower and apple tree maze, and loads of fun for children and adults. Novelty gadgets around the orchard include apple peelers like the pioneers used that were invented and designed over 200 years ago, as well as a 1903 windmill that is used as a source of water.

TRAFFIC LAWS South Carolina requires that any child under age six riding in a passenger car, pickup truck, van or recreational vehicle must use a child restraint system. Any child less than one year of age must be in a restraint-seating device regardless of where that child is sitting in the vehicle. Children ages one through five riding in a rear seat must use a restraint seating device or a safety belt provided by the vehicle. Children under four years of age riding in the front seat must use a child restraint seating device. Any child four to six years of age when riding in the front seat must be secured by a safety belt provided by the vehicle. State law requires that the driver and every occupant of a motor vehicle, when it is being operated on the public streets and highways, must wear a safety belt. The driver is responsible for requiring each occupant over six and less than 17 years of age to wear a safety belt.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE LAWS The legal drinking age for alcoholic beverages in South Carolina is 21. Alcoholic beverages cannot be served after midnight Saturday or all day Sunday, except in establishments with special permits in Tega Cay, Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill. Package store sales of alcoholic beverages are permitted from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Mon-Sat. It is unlawful for any person to possess an open container of beer, wine or liquor in a moving vehicle upon the highways of South Carolina.
