FOREWORD Maye Ltd is the marketing and consulting firm of Yildirım Plastik Makine ve Kalip Sanayii Ltd. Yildirim Plastik Makine ve Kalip Sanayii was founded by Mr. Muzaffer Yildirim in 1976 as a small, family-owned enterprise with a view to catering to the need of the domestic market for plastic moulding. Over the decades that followed, it maintained a continuous development thanks to its investments, innovative structure and customer-oriented policy, consequently serving the leading companies of Turkey and the world in terms of technical plastic materials production, as well. The company has become a reputable supplier in the fields it has been providing solutions to the automotive, packaging and advertising sectors. Yildirim Plastik Makine ve Kalip Sanayii established Maye Ltd in 2004, not only as a marketing firm but also to put Yildirim Plastik Makine ve Kalip Sanayii’s innovative research and development projects into operation in parallel with changing trends in the world. As a result of the joint efforts by company founder Muzaffer Yildirim together with R&D and Project teams of experts and academicians, APIMAYE Thermo Beehives were put on market, taking also end-user demands into consideration. The rich database obtained about the beekeeping sector serves to introduce the product range, developed for and spread across the fields of this sector’s progress, to global markets under the name APIMAYE, as the goal remains to offer continuous service through new products with ongoing R&D processes. The Thermo Hive project launched in 2004 was found qualified for support by TÜBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). The project was completed in October 2008, supported by Prof. Dr. Levent Aydin, member of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Department of Parasitology at Uludag University, and by Assistant Prof. Dr. Halil Yeninar, member of the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Zootechnics at Kahramanmaras Sütcü Imam University, throughout the production stages. Beekeeping is an occupation that historically started when man began to have bee colonies available. Involving domestication activities in that sense, this occupation was performed in protective housings called hives, made of various materials. These materials used in making hives included various plant fibres or stems at first, later consisting of wood raw materials. Though often made of wooden boards, hive structures are known to contain synthetic materials, as well. However, considering the resulting types of hives, mostly in the form of non-durable and crude-looking hives, the importance of a hive type that will be more durable, healthier both for bees and man, more beekeeper-friendly and versatile, and which will also improve productivity, has become apparent. The multi-purpose APIMAYE Thermo Hive types were developed taking bee biology, beekeeper requests and different ecological characteristics into consideration in line with this perspective. 5

A system that enables rearing bees in a healthy environment, transporting them without causing any harm and preventing harms to them has been implemented with APIMAYE Thermo Hives. Being light in weight, modular in structure, for beekeeping activities, diverse climatic conditions, bee biology, physiology and behaviours are features of APIMAYE Thermo Hives.


GENERAL FEATURES OF APIMAYE THERMO HIVES APIMAYE Thermo Hives are manufactured from certified plastic (HDPE) in accordance with the Food Codex, directly coloured without employing external paint, using plastic blowing and injection technologies. Manufactured to have antibacterial features, APIMAYE Thermo Hives support producers in controlling potential European and American Foul Brood diseases. The hives are manufactured with Anti-Static additives against dust formation and electrification and with UV additives to protect the hives against harmful sun rays, thereby prolonging their service life.

APIMAYE Thermo Hives are manufactured in three different types: APIMAYE Queen Nucleus with 4 Compartments (A), APIMAYE Swarm Nucleus with 2 Compartments (B), and APIMAYE Production Hive (C). This guide describes the general features and modes of use of these hives. (Figure1)

The hives are manufactured to be modular, in the form of panels, using double-walled structure and insulation infills (Figure 3). features provide thermal insulation, creating for the colony a suitable habitat in case of different climatic conditions. The design of the hives allows the incoming air from the hive bottom filters to rise all the way through the ventilation duct with the increasing temperature, and exit through the air ducts on the feeders and then through the louvres on the hive top cover. This enables an effective air circulation in the hive. The ventilation system is designed to work separately and independently for each hive model. The ventilation system prevents any rise of in-hive humidity, preventing any yeast or mould formation in the hives. thanks to the ventilation system, colony losses the effect the rising temperatures in summer would have inside the hives is reduced. A system consisting of bottom ventilation filters, a ventilation duct, air ducts on feeders and louvres on the hive top cover is designed to enable an effective air inside the hive. (Figure 4)

The inner board, which can also be used as a feeding element, is one of the important components of in-hive ventilation, together with the air ducts on it. Thanks to the feeder-type inner board, there will be no need for such additional elements as sacking, cloth or plywood to cover the hive top, and any organisms that might pose a threat to bee health will be kept from entering the hive. The feeder-type inner board allows feeding liquids and solids, where each alternating cover (Figure 6) fitted on the feeders can be adjusted to the intended position (Figure 7) for feeding cake, syrup or water (Figure 8).

The ease of removing and replacing the bottom and cover components, which constitute the most important parts of the hive, provides utmost convenience in terms of hive cleaning and in-hive care. Simplified hive care and cleaning will reduce time and labour costs, creating the possibility of working with larger number of colonies. The hive frames, the fundamental element where the colony performs all of its activities and production, were handled in parallel with the development of APIMAYE Thermo Hive type, resulting in a new frame design. APIMAYE HANDY FRAMES Designed on the basis of studies intended to increase beekeeper productivity, the frame model incorporates hygienic and beekeeper-friendly features as a priority. Many characteristics of conventional frames cause the producer to unnecessarily spend a lot of time, where nailing the frame together, fastening and stretching the wires across the frame, embedding the wax into the frame and attaching it to the top bar result in high labour costs and loss of time. The handy frames in APIMAYE Thermo Hives prevent such loss of time, making it possible to set up a much larger number of frames in a shorter time and allowing the beekeeper to work with a larger number of colonies.

These handy frames are composed of male and female components that can be separated into two. This not only enables the foundation sheet to be conveniently inserted (Figure 10), but also offers, thanks to the wax holders, an alternative to wire stretching and wax embedding. Depending on preference, the fixing rods can be easily removed and the holes for wire stretching (Figure 9) can be used instead.

Remove the connecting sockets to release the frame components, then place the foundation sheet onto the lower component.

Position the upper component on top, taking care to align the pins.

Hold the frame together in an upright position and manually press the two components together to make them snap into one another.

Finish the assembly by replacing the connecting sockets.

FRAME SPACERS AND IMMOBILLIZATION Each hive is equipped with fixing elements attached to its upper and lower sections inside (Figure 11). With these elements, potential damages during transport will be prevented by inserting each frame into a slot, eliminating the need for pre-transport fixing operations. The upper guide bar is pushed forward, loosening from the middle until it is freed from its grooved seat, and then pulled upwards and out.

The lower guide bar is pulled out by pushing it forward until it is freed from its grooved seat.

The lock-latch handles available on each hive provide ease of handling and use, so there is no need to secure the hive top cover by nailing. The handles (Figure12) used in carrying the hives are manufactured from stainless steel, eliminating the possibility of becoming mouldy over time.

APIMAYE THERMO PRODUCTION HIVE The thermally insulated body and super are not affected by climatic changes. The bottom, the feeder-type inner board and the louvred top cover which enable air circulation prevent humidity and mould formation. Manufactured from plastic (HDPE) in conformity with the Food Codex, the durable, UV-protected, antibacterial, anti-static and directly-coloured APIMAYE Thermo Production Hive has made both good quality and ease of use a standard for stationary and migratory beekeepers, with its queen excluder, varroa drawer, varroa trap, pollen trap, handy frames, double-functional division boards, and fixing elements.

Varroa Drawer: Available on top of the bottom, it allows bottom board cleaning without disturbing the colony. Using this drawer, it is also possible to apply medication against varroa. 6. Bee Entryway Separator: Both sides can be used. The three-notched side is used when wintering. The opposite side with larger number of notches is for the bees to work easily. (Figure 19) 7. Flight Board: Located on one side of the hive body, it has two colour sockets on it. (Figure 20) 8. Colour Socket: Set on the flight board, it serves to prevent the bees from drifting from their own colony. (Figure 20) 9. Flight Board Sunshade: Dividing the flight board into two, this element of the porch protects the bees from direct sunlight in hot and sunny weather. (Figure 21) 10. 11. Insulated Brood Chamber: Has an entrance, lock-latch handles and a flight board with sockets. Up to 10 frames can be placed inside. 12. Queen Excluder: Inserted between the brood chamber and the super, it serves to keep the queen under control, thereby enabling broodless comb honey production, and to facilitate control of varroa. It has built-in spacers by design which prevent the excluder from sticking on the frames, consequently allowing the bees to comfortably move on the frames. (Figure 22) 13. Insulated Super: Located over the brood chamber and equipped with lock-latch handles on two sides, this is a thermally insulated structure with no entrance. It can hold up to 10 frames to produce honey inside. (Figure 18) 14. Lock-latch Handles: Used to fasten together the brood chamber, the super and the top cover. As the excluder, when inserted, increases the distance inbetween, a second stage has been added for the latch to lock safely. The handles allow easy handling of the hive. (Figure 23) 15. 16. Shallow Super: Used for comb honey production in areas where the honey flow season is relatively short. (Figure 25) 17. Shallow Frame: Handy Frame manufactured to fit into the shallow super in terms of dimensions. (Figure 26) 18. Feeder-type Inner Board: One available for each hive, it is equipped with a feeder cover and alternating covers; enables feeding syrup, water and cake. As the colony remains undisturbed during such feeding (Figure 27), this promotes a healthy bee and colony development. The feeder-type inner board in APIMAYE Thermo Hives can be used in wooden hives, as well. 19. Feeder Cover: Used to cover the feeder compartment. 20. Possessing all the features of the Thermo Production Hive, the Thermo Swarm Rearing Nucleus with 2 Compartments allows you to winter two relatively weak colonies together in one single hive, smoothly unite a queenless colony with a queenright colony, rear queens without having to perform any extra work on the frames, prevent bee losses by means of the sunshade and the colour sockets intended to keep the bees from mistaking their colony for another, control varroa through the varroa drawer, and use this Nucleus also as a Thermo Production Hive.

Each board is half the size of the feeder-type inner board installed in APIMAYE Thermo Hives. The two boards can also be used together as one inner board in a hive. 18. 12. Larger Division Board: Used in dividing the hive into two compartments, this board has uniting elements on it which are opened to accustom the colonies to one another when uniting the colonies. Afterwards, the board is removed from the hive. (Figure 30) 13. Queen Mating Entrance: This is for the queen to enter & exit her hive during mating. Providing a different entrance intended specifically for the queen will prevent her from drifting when returning to her hive after mating. (Figure 31) 14. Queen Status Indicators: Provide convenience to the beekeeper in checking the condition of the queen(s), if any, in the hive, without having to open the top cover, thereby saving time. Smaller Division Board: Used in dividing a hive compartment into two smaller compartments, this board has a uniting element on it which is opened to accustom the colonies to one another when uniting the colonies. Afterwards, the board is removed from the hive. (Figure 30 A) 17. Queen Frame: Half the size of a normal frame, it is used for rearing queens. Queen frames can also be converted into a normal frame, if so desired, by linking them together via a special socket (Figure 36, Pg.38).

18.Queen Feeder: Four available for each hive, these boards are equipped with feeder covers and alternating covers. The presence of four boards allows separate feeding of each colony. As the development and a favourable habitat necessary for colony development. The size of each board is one fourth of that of the feeder-type inner board installed in APIMAYE Thermo Hives. The four boards can also be used together as one inner board. 19. Feeder Cover: Serves to keep the feeds from getting contaminated by wild animals, and also prevents any robbing by other bees. (Figure 32) 20. Alternating Cover: The feeders are equipped with alternating covers (Figure 33), which can be adjusted to the intended position (Figure 8) for the bees to conveniently access the cake, syrup or water (Figure 34).

THERMO BEEHIVE ACCESSORIES Pollen Trap: Used instead of the flight board sunshade, by fixing it via the latch into the hive entrance while the flight board is open. It serves to collect the pollen carried on the bees’ legs as they enter the hive, and to store such pollen in a drawer. The Pollen Trap is composed of a body, a pollen grid, a pollen drawer and a pollen rake (Figure 35). The pollen rake is removed to allow the bees to freely enter the hive. Instructions for Maintenance, Cleaning and Use 1. Hive covers and equipment should be protected from strong blows. 2. Hive equipment and accessories should be periodically cleaned. 3. Cutting, piercing or heat-releasing tools should never be used in cleaning the hive or its components. 4. Hive cleaning should be performed using water (max. 70°C) and a brush. Hive disinfection requires appropriate agents. Instructions for Transport 1. Any extra or liquid honey in combs should be taken out prior to transport. 2. The flight board(s) should be closed, and secured in place via the latch, prior to transport. 3. The sunshade(s) of the flight board(s) should be removed, and packaged against damage, prior to transport. 4. The upper and lower fixing elements should be fitted in place in order to prevent the frames from shaking during transport. 5. The latches of the handles should be kept locked during transport. 6. The varroa drawer and the bottom ventilation elements should be cleaned and checked prior to transport. Notice concerning Potential Hazard or Harm to Human or Environmental Health 1. Hives and related equipment do not pose any threat to human or animal health as they are manufactured using plastic raw materials in conformity with the Turkish Food Codex. 2. Hives and related equipment do not pose any threat to environmental health as they are manufactured from recyclable raw materials. Guidelines against Incorrect Use 1. Never use nails, hammers, adhesives, silicon etc. in the event the hives or hive components become worn out, or unusable after having taken a blow. 2. As the hives and their components are manufactured using the direct-colouring technique, there is no need to apply any coating by paint or solvent-containing protective subtances. 3. When placing the frames into the hive, pay attention to the lower fixing element and insert the frames properly, taking care to avoid breaking the locking members of the element. 4. One single type of feed (cake or syrup) should be chosen when feeding by means of a full-size inner board feeder, while both types of feed can be given separately (cake,water – cake, syrup) through multi-piece feeders. Guidelines for Product Maintenance or Cleaning by User 1. Certain hive components and accessories such as feeder-type inner board, queen excluder, varroa excluder, varroa drawer and bottom ventilation channel should be periodically cleaned every 15 days during production season for the beekeeper. 2. Cleaning of the bottom ventilation channel should be performed in spring and autumn, and, in the case of migratory beekeepers, the day before transport.
