What Hormonal Imbalance Does to Women


Hormonal imbalance is often due to increasing stress levels. As people go through a rollercoaster of emotions, the production of stress hormones like cortisol becomes overwhelming for the body’s system. This makes it difficult for primary hormones to normalize blood sugar, convert food into energy, and maintain the immune system’s inflammatory response. In addition, this could also affect them mentally and psychologically.


The Start of Depression A woman’s mood depends on where she is in her cycle, according to Professor John Studd of the London PMS and Menopause Centre. Her irritability and severe mood swings could take place before or after (pre and postmenstrual) her cycle. The World Health Organization (WHO) added that women are more likely to suffer from depression due to their mood swings. In fact, about 70% of antidepressant prescriptions were for women. This condition might even get worse if they’re suffering from estrogen dominance. As this could increase or decrease during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, it might lead to other health issues. These include acid reflux, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.


The Menstrual Cycle An article published by the Irish Examiner reported that general practitioners (GPs) might not see the full picture of women experiencing cyclical mood swings. The stages of menstrual cycle differ. Many women would shift from a good to a bad mood, while some don’t feel any kind of emotional change at all. Dr. Patrick Magovern, a GP that focuses on patients with unexplained symptoms, said that physicians see more female patients than males every day. This isn’t because women are more health conscious, but because they have bodies that are subtler than a man’s. Hormonal imbalance is responsible for many changes in the body. As women are highly prone to its negative effects, it’s best to keep the right balance. This is to prevent imbalances from becoming a threat to overall health.
