Businesses with a positive impact on society
“… the ultimate aim is not so much a high dividend distribution, as the build-up of useful activities.”
A.P. Møller, 1953
‘Nyttig virksomhed’ is at the core of what we do
The A.P. Moller Group is a diversified group of industry leading companies, independently run with dedicated boards and executive teams.
Though they operate in different sectors and industries, every A.P. Moller Group company delivers a service or product that has a positive impact on society – ‘nyttig virksomhed’. This shared underlying purpose ties the Group together – along with our heritage and a close association to the Maersk values.
'Nyttig virksomhed’ builds on A.P. Møller’s life goal of ‘building businesses with a positive impact on society ’, which can take many forms. For example, A.P. Moller – Maersk enables global trade, KK Wind Solutions is key to the green transition, and Faerch produces innovative sustainable food packaging. ‘Nyttig virksomhed’ is also a key criterion when expanding the Group and sowing the seeds for a successful future.
A.P. Moller Holding is the Group’s parent company. Ultimately, the Group is owned by the A.P. Moller Foundation.

We seek to drive long-term momentum and impact
The Group’s activities lie within four overall themes, all relevant for multiple business cycles.
GLOBAL TRADE
Global trade is key to prosperity as it enables income and growth for people and societies. We enable global trade in different ways, for example by facilitating more efficient logistics for countries and companies across the globe, and by building critical infrastructure.
CIRCULARITY,
WATER & WASTE RECOVERY
Global consumption of resources is not in balance with our planet's ability to regenerate. Sustainable replacements are being adopted and the use and utilisation of resources must be optimised. We are committed to the development towards circular rather than linear production and consumption models.
THE ENERGY TRANSITION
Our societies depend on a steady and reliable energy supply. At the same time, our planet needs to urgently transition from hydrocarbon-based energy to sustainable energy sources. We are focused on helping to make this transition possible in a way that is reliable, secure, and responsible.
DEMOGRAPHIC & SOCIETAL CHANGE
Across both mature and emerging economies, population demographics are changing. These slow-moving but largely inevitable demographic and societal factors are transforming our societies. We investigate digital and automated ways of working to address the welfare challenges arising from demographic change.

A.P. Moller Holding is an engaged and active owner, exercising its influence through the Group companies' Boards of Directors. Investing for the future
We build scalable platforms in areas where we can leverage momentum to drive long-term value and impact. When investing in new businesses, we use three overall selection criteria:
We focus on themes where we see long-term, secular growth trends.
We prioritise companies which can utilise and leverage the strengths and capabilities accumulated across our Group throughout more than 120 years.
LONG-TERM MEGA TRENDS
OUR VALUE ADD
FOCUS AREA
We strive to fulfil our Group’s long-standing purpose of ‘nyttig virksomhed’ (having a positive impact on society).
Building a portfolio of platforms
We leverage our knowledge, expertise, and experience across four different mandates:
PRINCIPAL HOLDINGS
Large control-oriented investments in companies backed by solid long-term mega trends. The principal holdings are platforms for deployment of additional capital over time for organic and inorganic expansion.
GROWTH EQUITY
Patient minority investments in late-stage growth businesses. In addition to generating attractive financial returns, the growth equity initiatives serve to enhance domain knowledge within our core focus areas.
SCALE-UPS
Rooted in our Group’s entrepreneurial legacy and spirit, we selectively initiate incubation projects and build new businesses.
PUBLIC MARKETS
Active concentrated global strategies focusing on high quality companies at attractive valuations across asset classes, sectors, and themes.
A hub for networking and collaboration
A.P. Møller House is the home of A.P. Moller Holding and a hub for many of the Group's activities.
From A.P. Møller House, A.P. Moller Holding encourages and facilitates collaboration, networking, and sharing of best practices. By engaging across the Group and sharing our insights, we all benefit from a powerful pool of talent, industrial relationships, and wide-ranging industry know-how.
The building was constructed in 1873 to accommodate the Royal Danish Nautical Chart Archives. We named it A.P. Møller House after our founder, A.P. Møller (1876-1965).
“Our values are a constant in an ever-changing world, an anchor and a beacon for us all. They are a link to the past, give us guidance today and will hopefully remain an integral part of our future.”
ANE M. M. UGGLA Chairman of the Board at A.P. Moller Holding and the A.P. Moller Foundation

Building on 120+ years of heritage
The seven-pointed star has embodied our Group's activities since 1886.
Ane Møller occasionally accompanied her husband, Captain Peter Mærsk Møller, on his ships during the latter part of the 19th century, and at one point fell seriously ill on a voyage with him. In a letter, Peter Mærsk Møller describes how this incident was the origin of the star:
“The little star on the funnel is a reminder of the evening I prayed for you so dejectedly and anxiously, asking for the sign that I might see a star in the grey, overcast sky, a reminder that the Lord hears our prayers.”
Ane Møller soon recovered and the star was chosen to guide the family’s shipping venture. When Peter Mærsk Møller acquired the steamship ‘Laura’ in 1886, he had its black funnel ringed with a blue band with a white seven-pointed star on each side.
