“We eat light, drink it in through our skins. With a little more exposure to light, you feel part of things physically. I like the power of light and space physically because then you can order it materially. Seeing yourself seeing is a very sensuous act—there’s a sweet deliciousness to feeling yourself see something.” James Turrell.

INTERNSHIP

Zaha Hadid Architects conceptualized the Condominium residences to depict the intermingling of the various aspects of New York City as well as the surrounding High Line symbolized by the chevron pattern. Lighting design by OVI respects the architecture in illuminating the details.

Office for Visual Interaction Architectural Lighting Design Jean Sundin | Enrique Peiniger www.oviinc.com New York City, USA Position - Lighting Design Intern This internship for one year was a part of the Master’s curriculum at Hochshule Wismar, Germany. Strategies for lighting design such as grazing and highlighting the facade, usage of spill light from windows were based on the architect’s and principle designer’s feedback got through the project.

The heritage buildings in New York City and their conservation policies bundled up with the lighting regulations were strictly considered and followed in the design process. Cornices, columns, window features and crowns were illuminated for the facade. Interior lighting gave a simplistic yet a natural fervor to the space.

Sciography Shade & Shadow studies

Lighting design for a prospective skyline consists of the urban design principles of Gestalt, Kevin Lynch’s theory and lighting design principles of Richard Kelly’s principles and standards for contrast ratios and quantitative values. The study of four studies along with the hypothesis testing on the New Jersey city skyline proved the methodology.

Present Jersey Skyline (in black outline) and hypothetical future development (in grey) Master Thesis, M.A. Architectural Lighting Design Jersey City Skyline with Lynch’s elements

Prof. Michael Rohde Prof. Thomas Römhild Hochschule Wismar, Germany The thesis defined the need to have a lighting design consultation for the new upcoming skylines globally.

Kelly’s principles - Ambient Luminiscence, Focal glow, Play of Brilliants

Jersey City Skyline - Gestalt theory

A comparison was done with respect to the formation and guidelines for urban planning and lighting design - daylight ad artificial light. Findings concluded the necesity for the study. The hypothesis was testing on the Jersey City skyline for the PROCESS for lighting design, though the design was not a priority. Fractal design process of Urban Planning is found to correspond to the lighting design process.

A meek balance and sophistication through the medium of light and architecture optimize utility in the design. Maintaining a minimum pilferage of light, yet highlighting the essential architectural features remains a prority throughout the design process. A detailed study of interior and exterior and an effort to incorporate light in aesthetic elements made way for a homely, comfort zone.

LIGHT & WORK

An overall sparkle is highlighted as we enter the premises. Integration of light in the door frame, steps and rendering the source invisible was achieved.

ARCHITECTURE

The Reis Magos Fortification was erected in the times of the Portuguese rule in India. It has significant Goan details for doors, windows etc. This structue is now a popular museum. Lighting design from mock ups to the final installation in the beach side saline climate was a task carried out during the internship.

The breezy beach side, saline atmosphere and heritage precinct, allowed very few modifications. The lights in this project have been restricted to lower levels near the floor, just enough to enliven the tourists and guide their way. The finished appeal was expected to highlight the strength and massiveness of the walls. The subtle aspects of a museum lighting preferred here prevent the lights from reflecting to the interiors of the fort.
