Appalachian Commitment to a College Education for Student Success (ACCESS) ACCESS is a need-based program that supplements federal financial aid grants, state grants, scholarships and other forms of financial assistance with sufficient funds to cover the cost of institutional charges. This program highlights Appalachian’s commitment to providing a debt-free education to North Carolina citizens. • Full institutional costs (tuition, fees, room, board and textbook rental) for up to eight consecutive semesters • Unique work-study opportunities to help pay for personal expenses • Comprehensive programming involving academic and personal support • Students will automatically be considered for this program when they apply for admission by Nov. 1 and submit all supplemental materials by Nov. 15 • Priority consideration will be given to students who complete the FASFA by Dec. 1 • Awarded to 50 students each year scholarships.appstate.edu/access-scholars

2019–20 Chancellor’s Scholarship Recipient Aidan Keaveney Durham, North Carolina A graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Keaveney plans to major in physics with a concentration in applied physics. During his senior year, he conducted experimental nuclear and particle astrophysics research, served as a Residential Life Assistant and published research on inequality in gifted education in the humanities journal Fifth World. He is also an active member of the North Carolina model rocketry community. 8
Chancellor’s Scholars The Chancellor’s Scholarship is Appalachian’s oldest and most academically competitive merit-based scholarship. It is awarded to the highest achieving students who have earned entry into Appalachian’s Honors College. The scholarship is designed for students with ambitious academic goals — those who seek graduate or professional postbaccalaureate degrees to become physicians, Ph.D. holders and more. • Full institutional costs (tuition, fees, room, board and textbook rental) for up to eight
consecutive semesters
• Support for research, conference attendance and scholarship during the summer and academic year in the student’s target area of study through the Office of Student Research • Access to research support through the Honors College • Personalized, professional mentoring and academic advising from Honors College faculty and staff • Opportunities to engage in service-learning courses and programs — both locally and throughout the world — through the Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) office, with travel cost support from the Honors College • Study abroad opportunities with any of Appalachian’s 200 partner institutions around the world, with travel cost assistance provided by the Honors College • Awarded to 10 students each year

2019–20 Diversity Scholarship Recipient Daeja Noel Gardner Greenville, North Carolina A graduate of D.H. Conley High School, Gardner was a National Honor Society officer and received the D.H. Conley Academic Award for Visual Art in both 2017 and 2019. She was also a teen ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House.

Diversity Scholars The Diversity Scholars Program is one of Appalachian’s top scholarship programs. Since 2008, it has recognized merit in scholarship and brought people together from different cultures and backgrounds to work on building unity through diversity. 2019–20 Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship Recipient Sarah Spencer Edenton, North Carolina Spencer is a graduate of the Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies, where she was a senior class officer and a North Carolina Scholar. While in high school, Spencer volunteered at the local hospital and at the local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship The Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship is designed to support students from underrepresented populations, with selection based on their desire to promote cultural diversity. In addition to covering full in-state tuition and fees, the renewable scholarship provides mentorship by alumni, the opportunity to participate in inclusivity-focused events, and networking and team building within each cohort of recipients. It was established to honor Dr. Willie C. Fleming ’80 ’84, who founded the Appalachian Gospel Choir and the Black Student Association, was a founding member of the Black Faculty and Staff Association and was also instrumental in bringing black Greek life to the university. • Full in-state tuition and fees for up to eight consecutive semesters • Specialized service-learning, leadership, team building and mentorship opportunities • Awarded to four students each year scholarships.appstate.edu/scholarships/dr-willie-c-fleming-scholarship

Beaver Scholars The Beaver Scholars program is the premier scholarship program for the Beaver College of Health Sciences. The program’s goal is to provide exceptional support to North Carolina students with a commitment to a career in the health sciences and in direct patient care environments. These scholarships are awarded to students majoring in health-focused programs with priority given to high achieving students who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving health care in the region and beyond. • $10,000 annual scholarship for up to eight consecutive semesters • Awarded to up to five students each year scholarships.appstate.edu/beaver

2019–20 W.H. Plemmons Leadership Scholarship Recipient Preston Hilliard Asheville, North Carolina Hilliard is a graduate of the School of Inquiry and Life Sciences in Asheville, where she was president of the International Thespian Society, a leader on the speech and debate team and the publicist for Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation club for empowering young women leaders to defend gender equality.

W.H. Plemmons Leadership Scholars The W.H. Plemmons Leadership Scholars Program was developed in 1994 to honor Appalachian’s second president, Dr. William H. Plemmons, who was committed to providing students with out-of-class experiences that would complement their learning in class. Plemmons Leadership Scholars are selected based on their strong academic records and their demonstration of leadership and innovation in their high schools or communities. • $2,000 annual scholarship for up to eight consecutive semesters • Specialized leadership opportunities, seminars, retreats, outdoor leadership experiences, special classes and financial support for participation in leadership conferences • Awarded to 10 students each year plemmonsleader.appstate.edu

Selective Academic Programs The Honors College The Honors College at Appalachian offers enriched academic, social, and leadership experiences for high-achieving and high-potential students. The Honors College features small, interdisciplinary seminars taught by inspired faculty; superb academic and career mentoring; the chance to live and grow in the Honors and Engagement Community of Cone, Summit, and Appalachian halls; and the opportunity, as an Honors senior, to complete a major research or creative project guided by a faculty mentor. honors.appstate.edu
Watauga Residential College Appalachian’s only residential college provides an environment for Appalachian’s most creative students to explore their passions both in and out of the classroom. Students reside in the Living Learning Center, a close-knit residential community. The Watauga Residential College’s specialized academic program of discussionbased seminars provides an unusual opportunity for students to become engaged in learning at a deep level through class discussions and research projects. watauga.appstate.edu
Appalachian Community of Education Scholars (ACES) This 4-year scholar program for future teachers focuses on mentoring, leadership, service and professional development.
