Wilson Scholars Program Do you have a passion for making a difference in the world? Are you ready to stretch and expand your comfort zone? If so, apply to become the next Wilson Scholar, Appalachian’s most prestigious scholarship program. Wilson Scholars know that to change the world, you must first understand it. With mentorship of the Faculty Director and resources for travel and creative inquiry, you will discover and grow your passion. Dr. Willie C. Fleming Scholarship Will you be the voice for the underrepresented? Dr. Willie C. Fleming has a deep history here at Appalachian, receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s from the institution. As founder of the Appalachian Gospel Choir, Black Student Association, and founding member of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Fleming has proven himself as an influential member of the Appalachian Community. In May of 2016, Fleming became Appalachian’s Chief Diversity Officer, cementing his passion for the diversification of the university. The recipients of this scholarship demonstrate a desire to promote cultural diversity, while also being from underrepresented populations. Academic Excellence Scholarships Awarded to top students in the first-year class, these scholarships are awarded to students with a strong academic record, demonstrated leadership and experience providing service to their communities. Opportunities for intellectual challenge and growth are available to all students, not just scholarship recipients. Two specially designed learning communities offer Appalachian students distinctive courses of study and extensive mentorship. Each has a residential component, allowing students the benefit of living and learning with peers who challenge one another to fully explore and deeply understand their courses of study.

The Honors College Home to the most academically talented students, the Honors College provides smaller and more rigorous classes, as well as specialized study-abroad and research opportunities that prepare students for leadership roles in graduate and professional schools and beyond. Watauga Residential College In Appalachian’s Watauga Residential College, visionary and creative students live and learn together in a close-knit residential community, exploring interdisciplinary methods of learning in the classroom and beyond its borders. As a “Wataugan,” you will connect this classroom learning to our local and global communities, and gain a broader and deeper understanding of what it means to be an engaged global citizen. Alumni of this program currently serve in the Peace Corps, lead non-profit organizations and run start-up businesses. They are also respected scientists and leaders in their disciplines and professions. Appalachian Commitment to a College Education for Student Success (ACCESS) Are you ready to commit to Appalachian as we have committed to you? ACCESS is a need-based program that supplements federal financial aid grants, state grants, scholarships, and other forms of financial assistance with sufficient funds to cover the cost of institutional charges (tuition, fees, room, board, and health insurance).
