MOUNTAINS of Opportunity
“Academically, I have been challenged to explore my passions, and every course has introduced me to brain-tantalizing concepts.” Marlowe Eliza Crews, sophomore, Manteo, North Carolina
At Appalachian, your “Mountains of Opportunity” include:
Challenging Academics Appalachian offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Classes are taught by exceptional faculty members – 99 percent of whom have the highest-level degrees awarded in their field. For high-achieving students, the Honors College provides an even more enriched academic experience that prepares you for leadership roles in your chosen field, as well as for graduate or professional school. Breathtaking Location Named as one of “The Best Small Towns” in America by Outside magazine, Boone provides abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Within a short drive of campus, students can take advantage of skiing, hiking, kayaking, biking, rock climbing, the Blue Ridge Parkway and more. Life-changing Involvement Students come to Appalachian excited to be involved – with each other, the local community and world at large. Appalachian has nearly 300 clubs and organizations, nationally recognized service-learning activities, international experiences, career-enhancing internships, arts and cultural events, on-campus housing with specialized learning communities, and more. An Experience Unlike Any Other Appalachian is a tad off beat, and students like that. Here you don’t buy your textbooks, you rent them. Hammocks are a legitimate study spot. Our commitment to sustainability is represented by the iconic wind turbine visible from all of campus. We celebrate diversity in all its forms, and we’re so friendly that even with about 17,000 students on campus you always run into someone you know.
“I think one of the most unique things about Appalachian is that it’s in the mountains. There are so many things to do outdoors! I also like the feeling of being in a college town.” Andrew Poeng, senior, Kings Mountain, North Carolina
“Appalachian values undergraduate education and mentoring. This was very important to me when I decided to join Appalachian. The low student-to-faculty ratio provides opportunities for one-on-one interactions with all students with different backgrounds.” Dr. Rahman Tashakkori, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science
Value and Affordability Appalachian offers an outstanding education at a great price, and our out-of-state rates are comparable with many states’ in-state rates. • In-state: $11,200 • Out-of-state: $22,500 Total estimated cost includes: tuition and fees, room and board, as well as textbooks.
Nestled in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Appalachian State University offers a unique combination of people and place. Our family atmosphere with small classes and caring faculty heightens your ability to learn and grow. At Appalachian, we combine the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large, research institution – such as opportunities to conduct research alongside your professors, make interdisciplinary connections, and pursue degree programs that address some of the world’s most pressing issues.
ACCOLADES: • U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2010 ranks Appalachian 3rd overall among regional public comprehensive universities in the South and 8th overall among public and private universities in the South. • Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine ranks Appalachian 22nd in the nation in its 2009-10 list of the top 100 values in public colleges and universities in the nation.
