Where to hang out There’s a lot to do on and around campus, whether you’re all about the outdoors, love a good concert, are a movie buff or a gamer. Appalachian has lots to offer, but if you can’t find a niche to fill, join the Appalachian Popular Programming Society and make it happen!

Where to eat on campus You’ll find plenty of choices among meal plan options: where to eat, what kind of food to choose and how to stretch your food budget. From local food options (nearly 15% of food served on campus comes from local sources) to the very popular BFD (breakfast for dinner) and steak nights, to ways to meet dietary restrictions, you’ll have lots of options at Appalachian.

Living in Boone Appalachian offers opportunities to choose a community to live and learn. As a freshman, you’ll be required to live on-campus and you can choose to live with other students who are interested in service, outdoor activities, education, business, and other interests. Whether you live on campus, off campus, with roommates or on your own, there’s lots to consider – and discover – at Appalachian.

Getting around town Boone is a college town and you’ll need to walk, ride a bike, or take the AppalCart rather than drive to your classes. These alternative transportation options keep our carbon footprint low! And, if you need transportation off the mountain, there are several bus companies that can assist you with getting to Charlotte, Greensboro and beyond.

Finding a job while you’re a student Many Appalachian students work part- or full-time on or off campus with help from the Student Employment Center. Resources in the Career Development Center and academic departments assist students in finding internships and volunteer experiences that can prepare them for a future career.

After graduation Upon graduation, our alumni go on to earn advanced degrees, start up businesses or NGOs, build distinguished military careers, work overseas, and develop careers that take them in many directions, all while giving back to the communities in which they live and work. The Honors College Appalachian’s Honors College students produce original scholarship while honing critical and creative approaches to learning. The Honors experience is characterized by intimate classroom settings which support rigorous coursework, open and provocative discussions and lively exchange and development of ideas. Specialized study-abroad and research opportunities prepare Honors students for leadership roles in graduate and professional schools and beyond. Watauga Residential College In Appalachian’s Watauga Residential College, visionary and creative students live and learn together in a close-knit community, exploring interdisciplinary methods of learning in the classroom and beyond. Alumni “Wataugans” are thought leaders and scientists who live across the globe, serve in the Peace Corps, lead non-profit organizations, and run start-up businesses. Appalachian = value Appalachian has a national reputation for outstanding value. Our alumni laud the opportunities afforded them by their Appalachian degrees. Our out-of-state rates are comparable with the in-state tuition of many states. Even with low tuition, however, the cost of college is a concern for most families. Advising before you get here

A transfer advising team will begin working with you now. And, you can use the Course Equivalency Search to find out how courses completed at other institutions may transfer. Specialized transfer guides assist you with choosing appropriate coursework to meet both general education and major requirements.

Meaningful mentorship

Appalachian is known for professors who mentor. You’ll meet a faculty mentor in your academic department who volunteers to assist transfer students specifically. You’ll also find a community of engaged transfer students. Transfer student organizations, including Tau Sigma National Transfer Student Honor Society, will ensure you get connected. Transfer students even have a dedicated librarian who specializes in supporting your unique educational needs.
